Cary is a phenomenal human and wrestler. Also was behind arguably the best looking nike wrestling shoe known to man
Wow!
When I was in high school I played four sports looking back now the hardest by far was wrestling but it’s the one I miss the most!!!
Cary is a national treasure. He is an incredible role model and I consider myself lucky to be able to learn from him through his UA-cam channel. He IS the best in the world.
His technique and spirit hit me after watching just a few shorts, in a class all by himself. I think Dave Schultz knew that to when he gave Cary back his placard.
Schultz, Sanderson, kolat , and hodge in that order are my idols. They are the greatest there has been.
Different kind of person. Stoicism at its finest. You’re incredible, Cary
It was an honor and privilege to grow up around Cary. My older brother was on the Jefferson Morgan team with him and it was an amazing experience to see and the people came out in droves to catch a glimpse of the 99-0, 4 state titles and outstanding wrestler awards winner. So proud of him and I’m extremely happy that this video series exists. Thank you. We all know and knew we were watching the greatest wrestler the world has ever known. You don’t need stuff on the wall to know that. Something he said in a highlight video from years ago was that he went to states looking to get the outstanding wrestler award and if you shoot for that, the state championship would fall in line. Stuck with me to this day.
This man is a special human being.
Jefferson Morgan wrestled at a tournament at Bedford High School when Cary was on the team. Absolute rock star status!!
Now he’s the best UA-cam instructor there is 🙏🏼
BEG Wrestling is going to love this one.
Coach Kolat was the best thing that ever happened to my wrestling career. I am very appreciative for all he's done for Maryland youth wrestling!
I am watching this from India. I have really been fascinated by American wrestling. I have never wrestled in my life but i am really inspired by this. Please release the next episodes. I love this channel
Watching him wrestling in High School at the W.P.I.A.L Championship was the highlight every year. He just dominated everyone by Technical fall or pin. The kids he went against weren't pushovers, especially when he went to state's.
Yeah when you make it to the state tournament these are the best kids in the state now I am from Jersey so Atlantic City boardwalk Hall if your wrestling they're your wrestling really good guys a New Jersey there's only one state champion in everyway class individually and there is teams that are ranked number one number for number 10 in the country.... They're all hammers so yeah Pennsylvania probably has more schools ranked in the top-25 the New Jersey but Pennsylvania also has more than one individual state champ at a weight class in Jersey yes teams have 3 groups but individually there's only one guy claiming a weight.. Pennsylvania New Jersey ,New York, Ohio, Michigan , Iowa California, then Wisconsin ,Arizona, Georgia, Florida would be my top 10 States in Highschool wrestling but New Jersey has had a state champion ever year for the last 10 years in a national finals look it up Pennsylvania has the most all Americans and the most national champions in the last 10 years followed by a New Jersey.. then there's a pretty big drop-off
The all time PIAA greatest.
Cary was a freaking beast, I met him at Grudy VA wrestling camp.. freak of nature!!!!!! He was built like a freaking tank!!!!!!
Cary is the greatest American wrestler to never win Olympic Gold, and he was absolutely robbed repeatedly by corrupt officials.
I've seen some old VHS tapes of Cary wrestling at worlds, and he was an absolute machine. Just tore through a whole bunch of world level wrestlers.
Really well said. 🥇🤼🇺🇸
Bo nickel never won a gold did he? He was pretty good also
@@chriscurtis3150 Bo Nickel is good but Cary was on a whole new level. Cary was on top no matter what records say.
The first part about how his dad treated him is sad. It may have worked but dang man I feel bad for him regardless of the excuses he makes for his fathers actions. When my kid is on the mat I disappear, I can see him but he can't see me. It's his fight not mine, if he wants it he will go get it. I also let others coach him and let him teach me. I just try to be a good drilling partner and let him get reps with a calm semi-knowledgeable guy. If he asks for a suggestion I'll give it but otherwise he just gets his reps flow rolling with the old man. I don't know if this way will work in the end but I couldn't do to my son what that guy did to his. Some day my son will remember the dad that was because I will no longer be. Make good memories men because someday that's all that you will be.✝️
I thought he was inspirational. Didn't even wrestle but wanted what his son wanted as much as he did, and we'll for me, my dad was the opposite
@@juntjoonunya9216 If you think that hitting your kid with a cattle prod is anything other than child abuse I don't know what to tell you buddy.
@@DonGately it depends on how ithe method is delivered and received. Doesn't sound like either father nor son would call it abuse. Cary ain't built like the average dude. He survived a dumpster attack
@@juntjoonunya9216 It does not at all depend on anything. This is what I am saying to you. A cattle prod is child abuse.
@@DonGately 100%. Amazing that even needs to be said. The thousands of pushups for being taken down at practice is also a bit twisted.
Great video! I remember hearing tales of him while wrestling during the same time in Illinois.
Saw him wrestle in high school. He played with his opponet like a cat plays with a mouse.
So impressive.
That Dave Schultz moment man . Can only imagine what he'd be doing for the sport if he were alive .
Kolat is just a special human being I truly wish him all the best and happiness in the world! I'm really glad there is someone who is showing these people's Amazing Stories. Thanks Flo
This guy is my favorite U.S. wrestler of all time. And an even better person. Thanks Coach Kolat!
They robbed him of Gold hes the uncrowned gold medalist
Bravo for making this documentary and thank you.
Local legend from my town great to see
I remember watching him wrestle in 1992 winning his 4th state championship title. I was just a sophomore wrestler. Amazing to watch him do next level work
I was a student at chartiers valley and I remember him from rival jeff Morgan and all the good exposure he brought to western pa wrestling
The privilege of a lifetime to be trained by this man, thanks coach
That backflip vs. Chris Bohn of Boiling Springs, PA in his 4th PA State championship. Legendary.
Flo, thanks for this work! Such people as Cary deserves to be appreciated not for the numbers, but for the love for the sport of wrestling
Amen Brother!
This is why FloWrestling is the #1 channel for most of us in the wrestling community ! Good job and looking forward to Episode 2 !
My fav. grappler of all-time. Got me into the sport.
This guy was an absolute rock star in central Pennsylvania wrestling.
The Dave Schultz part of this story made me pause the video for a few minutes.
RIP
I loved that documentary as it added tidbits of personal history that I did not know. Nice work!
Amazing Wrestler & Coach. I thought he wrestled at Lock Haven. Didn't know he was with Penn State. Chance Marsteller was at Lock Haven and mentions it a lot. I would love to hear why he transferred and his thoughts about Lock Haven. He seemed to flourish in the small wrestling school. Also his Thoughts on Chance Masteller his friendship coaching and how he helped chance get his life back.
On why he transferred,
according to a couple articles I found online, Cary wanted to redshirt a year so he could train in freestyle for the Olympics. His coach got mad at him, and his coach’s reaction is what made him take a year off anyway and then transfer.
Fantastic. Thanks you for this
Thank you guys so much. I think Cary has reached a lot of people through his instructional, such as myself, who haven't been on the Mats with him per se.... but still seems an exemplary human being.
Thank You Flo Wrestling for posting this. I know you need to make a profit at times and running coverage for a world sport comes at a cost. But these stories need to be shared with the world. I feel if you do. Eyes and followings will definitely "Flo" your way.
Yooooo. I’m so amped for this. Talk that shit Cary. That drive is who made him the great American wrestler that made so many of us proud 🙏🏼
Tough as nails, I don't wrestle or do jiu jitsu at the moment though I have done a decent bit in the past. He is an inspiration to me for sure. I remember after learning some jiu jitsu going to fsu and wrestling with the team /club. There was this guy about 125 Ibs and he would take me down every time while I was weighing 165 or close to. I remember coming into a tournament and missing my normal weigh class by like a pound or so so I had to wrestle up at like 175 or 185 or something I forget. But I can say that I would rather wrestle someone a little bigger than me than smaller. The quickness or smaller wrestlers is so apparent when you wrestle them, if they know what they are doing they can be a real terror.
Cary is an amazing human.
Every wrestler needs to watch this series. While I love Vision Quest, it has nothing on Cary Kolat.
Good stuff. This is old video right? He hasn’t coached at Campbell for a while??
That's a fuckin dad if I ever heard of one. Thank you, Mr. Kolat! You did great!
You can be the best at what ever.
But you will NEVER be the best every time
Great docu, need part 2 asap! good job flow.
Flo, yall are doing a phenomenal job archiving this history of this sport. Keep up the good work!
What an amazing dad he had
Fantastic video! Thank you!
He lost a lot of weight. Hope he is doing good. My coach loved This wrestler. Bless his soul.
Absolute Respect..and thank you .
Wow. Thanks for sharing this story.
This was great!
Im just a dude and he took the time to talk to me… great wrestler, super guy
Kolat is an unbelievably mentally tough human being! Too me, looking from the outside, is as if a samurai reincarnated in him. Seeking PERFECTION!
💯
Sweet, i loved watching cary wrestle at jefferson morgan. I remember the night he did the flipper to escape a single leg.
Dave Schultz always 1st first class👍
Met Cary he is the bomb !
That made me cry, RIP Dave
😪
Mindsets of champions and top tier soldiers.
I love Cary Kolat. He is the best.
Wow i didn't know he was crushed and almost killed by a dumpster as a child that is scary he's a beast 🙏
Very good video
That’s a 1970-80’s model father
What a MONSTER
Very neat story.
About time y all start posting stuff for free
Was that Gable going insane in the match against Iowa. It looked like Dan. He looked so pissed 😂
I remember when Mark Ironside came back and beat Cary. One of the best college matches ever!!!
From this I learned I should shock my kid...
Nothing but Love and Respect for Joe Kolat!! And the one of a kind Cary Kolat!!
🙏
Insane.
10,000 pushups is unbelievable. I couldnt imagine. I couldnt do that many in a week.
The Dave Shultz story is incredible
thats great
His Dad was intense but at least he built him up. My dad was the same way. Constant high fives and reassurance followed by constructive criticism. BUT when I was at practice it seemed like he fuggin hated me😭😂😭😂
What makes you think he hated you ?
@@marthasantiago7865 I know he didn’t actually hate me but he was intense and when your a coaches kid it feels like you’re getting picked on sometimes even though he was just pushing me to be better cause he held me to a high standard.
23:40 willie Stravino... the goat
Wish I had his drive but I get in my head too much
American ICON
Hey I watch all his shorts up to date
Couldn't stop laughing at the 6 pictures training steps, "oh you didn't get the stance in picture 5 right" 😅 in my time we didn't even have pictures!!!!! For me and for myself only, those few losses I had in highschool gave me value, it's what you do afterwards that define you.
Please drop terry brands story🙏🏽
Seriously, I can’t find it anywhere.
Respect Cary!
Bro, I ain't trying to change your mind about anything, but you're a fucking legend! I only Wish I could have had half of your success and opportunity! You'll always be a legend! When I hear your name, that's all I think! Legend!
Did you see Dan Gable? In the final he lost. He didn't mention that.
A MACHINE
tuff
Nobody mentioned during his highschool training for states. He would wear out every kid during practice then take on three coaches after practice. The coaches left practice more tired than the kids. Seen it first hand
Cary kolat was the baddest motherfucker to ever step foot on a wrestling mat. I can’t imagine showing up to the match and finding out that you were the guy wrestling Cary that day. I know that feeling! I’m from the same area In Pennsylvania as Cary, I used to be paired with these 2 guys in my weight class that were guys that were unbeatable. Bill senereth from cobra, and Matt schomberg from freedom. The only two I’d never beaten a single time
Cary Kolat is the freakin' man!
There's no way a 15 year old kid can do 10,000 pushups in 3 hours or an entire day for that matter. Tears or not every human reaches muscle failure at a point and it becomes physically impossible no matter how determined you are
I believe it. My uncle Ed told me this yrs ago
Who did he lose to in the first dinal?
Totally awesome buddy you know you were Sunkiss kids I actually rest of so many Sunkiss kids my club that I was with a new tall was Sundance Wrestling but I mean I wish I could show you some videos of me also we look so much like we probably would’ve been wrestling partners because we were about the same way all the time it would’ve been so fun
wow
That’s 55.5 push-ups a minute for 3 hours straight to get 10,000. I think it may not of been 10,000
Cary sounds cool, but I like his dad😂. His dad was present and put so much effort into his son. His pops made an unshakable foundation.
❤
Yeah I see why I took 2nd in league ! 😢😢😢
Dudes father did a number on the kid. I think he’d be taller but his father stunted his growth by making him work out so hard. He’s got a lot of hate built up he won’t admit too.
I wouldn't make that judgement.
RIP DAVE!
