Missing the only 6x NCAA champion ever, Carlton Haselrig. He wrestled at University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Won 3 D2 and 3 D1 championships. In high school won the PIAA AAA championship and didn’t have a wrestling team. Entered the district tournament 0-0 and won the state championship. If Baumgardner wasn’t there may have been an Olympic wrestler.
Drafted by the Steelers after not playing football in college and made the pro bowl.
Unfortunately suffered from CTE. Passed away in 2020.

It looks like Haselrig tried MMA back in the early 2000s while he was refereeing our tournaments in southwest PA. If the UFC had blown up sooner, the most anticipated match of all time would have been Kimbo Slice vs Carlton Haselrig. Spencer Lee????

It seems a lot of the older wrestlers basically pre 2010 got the bone on this. Wrestlers back then didn’t get paid hardly so they stopped wrestling after one maybe two Olympic cycles. Had some of these guys wrestled 15 years on the senior level like the guys now they could’ve had 6+ world titles (ie Cael, Gable, Tom Brands, etc). Crazy to think what John Smith could’ve accomplished if he hung around another 6-10 years.

    • @genghiskhan7041
      @genghiskhan7041 11 місяців тому +3

Smith had no choice but to quit wrestling, his body gave out on him. He had a great run though. Back in John's day there wasn't any big money for winning Olympic medals like today. $500,000 goes a long way. Cael was already pretty old the last time he made the world team and finished 5th. No way Brands would've won more than another couple titles, tops. Gable might've been able to pull off multiple golds over the years but he needed the money and wrestling coaching paid money.

Back in the 80's when he was in college (Division 2), if you won your weight class National Championship, you were invited to compete in D-1 NCAA championship. From his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons,he won 2titles(one in D2 ,and one inD1, each year for a total of 6titles each year)., They don't have it like that now,and some may refer to it as the Haselrig Rule.He got hurt and didn't play college football, but ended up in the NFL (if I'm correct, making the Pro Bowl)!

Great that you put all this time and energy into rating the top 100 American wrestlers. It is well done but I feel some of the old time wrestlers such as Jack Vanbebber who was the first undefeated 3 time NCAA champion and who pinned ever single one of his opponents plus he won an Olympic gold medal have been underrated. Sure it was a long time ago and there was not as much competition as in the modern era but wrestlers such as him and others like Hodge would be even better wrestlers today as the training methods and techniques are even better. So all that has to be taken into consideration when rating the old time wrestlers otherwise they get underrated which I think some of them have been.

Wade Schalles is still my favorite wrestler. He was the king of funk and even had a video called "Legal Pain." The "X" in the mat wasn't his idea, though. It was someone in the student body that challenged him to pin his opponent on it. Coach Bubb never knew what was going on because when Wade was pinning his guy, the tape rolled up and came off the mat and stuck to the guy who got pinned. I was teammates with Dennis Koslowski's brother, Jim. He also was an extremely tough wrestler who placed 3rd in the nation. Cool guy, too. I saw Randy Lewis pin his Soviet opponent in 1981 in Randy's home town in Rapid City, SD. I've never heard a crowd scream so loud.

You could argue Dan Gable is the most influencial US wrestler, but he is not the most decorated having lost once in college and he has a relatively short international period of success. While at different stages of their careers, Lee Kemp beat him in the Midlands and probably moved him more quickly into coaching. Gable certainly captured a lot of attention for the sport as a competitor and a coach. Sanderson may pass him in coaching success; time will tell.

Great video Flo! The only one I think you guys were way off on is Gene Mills-I would put him in at least the top 20. In addition to what you guys said, 107 falls and 96% victory rate in college. It would have been a huge upset for anyone to beat him in the 1980 Olympics.
One of the most impressive things he did was when he just walked out of the stands at age 26 and beat Kevin Dresser by 12 points in the finals of the Midlands. I don’t think he had wrestled a single match in 3 years and he had moved up 2 weight classes.

Should have a separate list for men and women. A lot of great wrestlers were left off of the list. Men and women. DT is proving to be in the top 3 all time.

This is silly. If you fast forward so FloWrestling title would read...The Top 5 American Wrestlers Of All Time... Dan Gable, Dave Schultz, Cael Sanderson, and (insert who I'm missing) would be excluded from this list.

Why isn’t Dan Gable #1 of all time? I’m asking out of curiosity and admit that I don’t know a lot of the other names.
    No losses in high school.
1 loss in college; last match.
    Perfect in the Olympics.
I hope to hear some thoughts on this.

I think Bruce in front of JB is debatable 2 Golds a Silver and. Bronze in the olympics. That tells me on the biggest stage when things go his way he’s good and when they don’t he still sticks around in the top three! At HW too wrestling the biggest baddest dudes on the planet! JB had one Olympic gold but a lot of worlds.

    - How did DC make it that high? Runner up in college and a bronze medal in one world championship is his best showing ? ….Brent metcalf undefeated high schooler, hodge trophy , ncaa championships and a team title two time freestyle national champ … Zain train undefeated for three years in college with 87 percent bonus points , team titles, Royce Alger called the toughest by gable, two time ncaa champ, won a silver world medal….DC is not above them
    - Adeline Grey is not top ten
    - I would switch Bruce and Jordan because Bruce has more medals , which includes 4 Olympic medals in two of those are gold. Bruce should be second and I don’t think it’s even close. However, Jordan is a solid third.
    -Dan Gable should be higher
