  • Jeanette Tousignant, vestibular physical therapist explains what dynamic visual acuity testing is, and why it provides valuable information to the clinical team at Active Physical Therapy's Center for Dizziness and Balance.
"Dynamic Visual Acuity Testing is something that we do with our assessments for vestibular rehab patients here at Active Physical Therapy. It gives us the opportunity to really showcase what gaze stability deficits are happening. We can test for the gaze stability reflex. And then we can use that information to tell if patients are using the capacity designed to be able to see clearly when we move our head fast. So if you think about skating up ice, then turning around really quickly and then skate backwards, that's a really rapid pace. And this reflex is designed to help you see clearly when you move really fast.
So the dynamic visual acuity test that we do helps us understand that it is or is not really functioning correctly, and just how slow is it?
If you don't see things clearly, that's a huge disadvantage when you're moving fast. Maybe you're even behind the wheel. And you hear a noise as you're driving and you have to quickly turn your head. That rate of speed of quickly turning your head is something that can be too slow. And if you have this deficit, it can make you dizzy and off-balance. And that's kind of a bummer thing to have happen behind the wheel of a car for instance."
