  • Lennon was a great many things to millions of people and his loss had a seismic impact. In the immediate hours following the attack, word began to spread. Stevie Wonder was performing at the Oakland Coliseum and was tasked with announcing the news. “I want you all to understand that I’m not a person who likes to be the [bearer of] bad news,” Wonder announced.

Can't believe it to this day! I remember this like it was yesterday. Taking such a wonderful genius who had brought joy to millions through his music in the prime of his life! When I think of it it makes me so angry! I'm a HUGE Beatles fan, and although I knew at the time that the Beatles would never get back together, it just pisses me off that this nobody blasted John off the face of the earth!!!! Sad!

I lived close by. A female friend phoned me from a nearby pay phone to let me know what just happened. I could hear the sirens thru her phone.
The following week it felt like the entire City of New York had slipped into a deep depression. Store mannequins were posed with their heads bowed holding Beatle albums. NY radios played nothing but Beatle songs.
That Christmas the firm I worked for held their annual party at Tavern on the Green - directly across the street from where Lennon had lived, and was shot. The party broke up early, the band that had been hired stopped playing. There was little enthusiasm for celebrating. Only a few of my fellow employees remained, no one knowing where to go or what to do - it was Christmas. There was a piano in the room. I used to play piano professionally in and after college, which helped me eat and pay rent. I sat at the piano and began playing Beatle songs, which I knew by heart. My fellow employees gathered around me and began making requests. Everyone understanding the moment. I could see through the widows, over their shoulders, the Dakota Building, with a lit candle in the window where John Lennon had lived.

It was the most tragic death in western popular culture because at the end of the day, he was a Beatle, and The Beatles represented life, youth, idealism, optimism, happiness. To have one of them dead who was the living personification of the 1960s was just unthinkable.

Watching this video made me feel sad and a bit scared for how the world is. A comment that John made about 20 or so years before he died stained his reputation and was ultimately used as a justification for his murder. I also found it eye opening how there was hospital banter and machine noises used when describing the operating room. It shows that, at some point we are all gonna hear those noises and it’s just a matter of whether we die in peace or, we don’t. I hope that I will have a chance to leave this world when I want to, not when I don’t. I feel for people who have died in horrific ways. It hurts to think that John was probably panicking while doctors frantically tried to save him.

I was 12 years old at the time when I first heard of his shocking death on the ITV news and I'd only just started high school three months earlier.
A truly senseless murder of one of the most iconic cultural figures of the twentieth century, who is still sorely missed even now after all these years and always will be.
My art teacher Mr Harrison (no relation to George) was a huge fan of The Beatles, as well as of John Lennon's solo work and he asked us pupils to help him paint a mural of John outside our classroom door as his own personal tribute, which we were all happy to do.
It was a painting of London in profile and was based on a Bob Gruen photo that was taken in New York in 1974 during the 'Walls And Bridges' album era. That stayed there for years.

Dude, this video is totally remedial. You need to delete it or redo it. Downright embarrassing. Several of your facts are wrong, including the fact John had breakfast with Yoko. He was alone when he went to breakfast. Your times are off relative to the photoshoot and the radio interview. Additionally, the photo shown at 2:50 was taken during the Saturday, Dec 6th interview with Andy Peebles, not with the Dec. 8th RKO Radio interview on Monday. How do I know? I know because although John wore the same sweater during both interviews, he wore a red shirt beneath the sweater, which can easily be seen on any December 8th photo. When Lennon left for the studio, he didn't get into "his car." His chauffeur did not show up on time, so the Lennons got a ride from the RKO staff. For a site that calls itself "Music Box USA," you don't appear to be well-versed in the subject matter. I've never read anywhere that the reason the car could not pull in to the vestibule area was because there was another car in front blocking access. According to Mark David Chapman in one of his interviews, he never said "Mr. Lennon." According to Chapman, he didn't say anything at all. Lennon didn't stumble "down" the five steps to the office; he walked UP the five steps to the office. The name of the sportscaster who announced Lennon's death was "Howard Cosell," not "Howard Coose." Btw, the correct English is "he had once written", not "he had once wrote." Horrible.

When I think about this and what happened to John Lennon, I always get really angry at America, because this is something that couldn't of happened in England or anywhere else, America and their damn guns.

So an Englishman didn't break into George's home in Dec 1999 stabbing, and nearly killing him? Harrison most likely would have been stabbed to death, if his American wife hadn't beaten the man with a poker.
