  • How do you know if your relationship is going in the right direction? Is there a way to tell if you're in love? Well, yes, and studies confirm that the measuring stick is how much laughter there is in your relationship. Comedian Yakov Smirnoff, host of PBS comedy special "Happily Ever Laughter", explains.

    Script:
I grew up in the former Soviet Union. My parents and I lived in a communal apartment with nine other families. When my parents wanted to be romantic they would send me to look out the window.
One day my dad said, “So what did you see out the window?”
I said, “Our neighbors being romantic.”
He said, “How could you tell?”
I said, “Because their son is looking at me.”
My parents laughed. At that moment, I felt that I was in the presence of love. As a child, I made the discovery that laughter must be the way people communicate to one another that they’re happy.
Did you know that there has been actual research into the relationship between laughter and happy marriages?
For over four decades, Dr. John Gottman, Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, has studied thousands of couples in both successful relationships and not-so-successful ones. “Couples who laugh together,” he concludes, “last together.”
Here’s how it works: we make each other happy first and then laughter reassures us that we are on the right track. The fading away of laughter may be the best way to tell if your relationship has gone off course.
So here is what I want you to start doing: listen for laughter in your relationship.
And not just any laughter - listen for moments when you share laughter together. If that isn’t happening just about every day, it is time to do something about it.
Let me give you an example from my own life. One night, I was putting my son Alexander to bed. He was cranky and crying. My wife said to me, “I’ll show you how to put the baby to sleep.” She took Alexander from me and put him in the bassinet and put the bassinet on top of the dryer. Two minutes later he was sound asleep. I said “Oh great. All other kids are going to go to daycare center. I’ll have to drop him off at the laundromat. Oh, that bundle? Yeah, that one is mine.”
My wife did not laugh. As a comedian, I should have caught that. In my show, if a joke doesn’t get a laugh, I analyze what went wrong. Perhaps change the set-up, or a punch line to get the laughter back. I use laughter as a gauge of the happiness of my audience.
At that time, I did not understand that it could be applied to my personal life as well. If I had understood that laughter was a gauge of happiness, I might have saved my marriage.
As I started to research the science of happiness, I learned that when there is a genuine connection between people, laughter is the first thing that happens as a confirmation of a happy relationship.
The intimacy comes next and then people get married and live together.
When things are not working, laughter is the first thing to go.
Second thing to go is intimacy.
    Third thing is your house.
Of course, marriages and relationships break up for all sorts of reasons. But, I can say with confidence, if you’re not laughing, there is trouble ahead.
So, how do you get the laughter back if you’ve lost it? Every relationship is different, of course, but there is one constant: To laugh together, you need to be together. And that literally means time together.
You need to start by making a decision that time together is important and it’s not negotiable. Set a date night, take a dance lesson, a cooking class. Doesn’t matter what you do. You just have to do it.

Some people here seem to be far more critical of this video than is warranted.
The message here isn't that laughter will fix your broken marriage or make someone love you, it's just saying that laughter can be a good gauge to check during your relationship. If you notice that your partner and you are laughing a lot less together, it might be good to talk about why that might be the case. It's pretty obvious advice to some people I suppose, but maybe it isn't to others.

Yeah, I was genuinely surprised and the sound statistical analysis from a comedian of all people. Generally, when you get people spouting observational statistics, they make a causal conclusions. His points were completely and only predictive in nature, which is a proper observational conclusion.
It must be because he's Russian. Every major advancement in probability and statistics after Rev. Thomas Bayes was by a Russian mathematician.

He was a guest on Dennis' show and expanded on this. Basically he said that happiness leads to laughter, so if the laughs go missing its a warning sign that you aren't as happy as you used to be. It's like a canary in the coal mine.

She was a wife. That's what was wrong. They are always pissed at you for some reason or another and don't laugh at anything you say. And that old joke about why do brides smile when they are getting married - it's because they know they have given their last blowjob - is pretty damn accurate and is a good gauge of the "intimacy" factor after you get married. So pretty much every married dude in existence is in the no laughter, no intimacy category. And there ain't shit you can do to fix it, either.

Lots of women are unhappy in their marriages, and the husbands have no clue, BECAUSE THE WIVES DON'T COMMUNICATE, THEY JUST EXPECT THE MAN TO KNOW BY OSMOSIS, OR READ HER MIND! Most men don't pick up on hints; we seldom use hints ourselves, and seldom recognize when they are being used towards us. Women, if you want to be sure your man gets the message, tell him directly.

    • @snappysnap955
      @snappysnap955 8 років тому +69

Yep, we tend to think something like this..."if you really loved me, you would be able to read my mind"...I know that sounds insane, but it's kind of true...if you really loved me, you would know how I feel is how we think it to ourselves. I realize that is not helpful at all. Women and men are so different it's amazing any relationships work out at all. Mark Gungor has some great videos on the differences of how men and women's brains work.

Yakov, I have to share this with you. When my wife and I were in our early dating days we would both laugh so hard over something that we'd cry. Because I this I combined the words Laughing and crying into a new word "craughing" We didn't craugh as much later in life, but we did craugh. I have a picture of my wife not long before she died in 2015 of her dancing with the turkey she was preparing for Thanksgiving. Great belly laugh coming out of that smiling mouth, and tears streaming down either side of her face. There are times when I miss her, but as the Bible says, "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." So, yes, her body died, but she is with Jesus, and since we are "one flesh" that means I'm already half in Heaven. God bless you sir.

Maybe depends of your country? In mine (Chile) Its often the male that lose the house, and the kids too, most of the times, the law is very, very protective (over) of the women in the courts (but not before that, the police force is more relaxed on the matter, at time too much).
I remember a friend, her wife divorsed him, (jealousy or something like that) 1 year and a half later he hooked up with a girl and his ex-wife demanded him for "intramarital violence"... no prof nor anything, my friend barely avoided loosing his job and had 2 lawyers on the work and all, no need for proof to fall with that kind of acusations here, at least in the female/male direction. (Spoiler: the guy is as cool and chill as you can find, nothing of the sorts happened, he does almost never drink even, court droped the charges after half a year and more.)

Also, relationship IS work. Just like how you'd work hard to make your wife laugh, she works just as hard to make sure she remains sexually appealing to you.

Its cheaper and better than a gf/wife. Never had a gf, i was a "MGTOW" long before "it was cool" and long before there was even internet (gen x here), and after well over 40 decades of life i'm much happier being single and free. No need to feel sorry for me, but thank you anyway. I'm single, free and happy with my life right now.
Oh, and on last note: You didn't do anything wrong, mate, cause crazy is the normal state of mind for +90% of women... They go crazy if you do anything they want or go crazy if you don't. There's no winning when playing against women. The best way to win is not playing their game.

I can see his post just fine, here let me copy/paste his response to your original post:
"85% of women are barely even human, they lack empathy for others and are parasitic in nature. It's about finding one of the 15% that are interesting, kind, and worthwhile individuals (which is difficult to say the least), and having chemistry with that person. Also, never make them feel like you need them (don't be "clingy"), act indifferent, like you could easily find someone else (be subtle, not a complete ass, don't literally say "I don't need you I can have anyone"), be kind (be mean once in a while, many wont admit it, but women WANT to argue sometimes, the good ones not so much, but most women aren't happy when things are going "too good", which is why you'll see many women self-sabotage things in their lives), be good in bed, treat them with respect, make them feel like you can protect them, and be "cool". This is the most effective method, complicated, but if you can make this balance work, you're going to be ok, TRUST ME, if someone tells you otherwise, they are lying, being a "white knight", clueless, or probably being cheated on."
My first post in your thread was a response to this (perhaps that will make my post clearer if you reread it).

Our marriage was never terrible, just a bit rocky, until we learned the most important lesson: It's NOT my spouses job to make me happy; it is God's. Now she's off the hook. And so am I.
Now I don't pressure her to make me happy, nor do I look to her for kudos or for my joy. If I give over that right (which should be God's) then I have given her the power to take away my happiness. But if my happiness comes from God alone, no one can take it from me. This frees her and it frees me. Today, after 49 years, we are happier then ever and spend at least 2 hours together everyday enjoying each other. God loves to laugh and he laughs best. Who knew?

Out of nowhere this comedian named Yakov Smirnoff appeared on television a lot. Everybody liked him. He was funny and easy to love. By doing this it made Americans less scared of Russians. That's why he's admired by your parents and grandparents. He made us feel less scared. God bless him

That's the key to opening up the mind of liberals. Go for the feels because their feels trump logic. As we all know you can't get liberals to come over to your with logic alone. It's all about the feel feels with them.

Actually a great many of the Prager U videos are not political. The most helpful to me being "The missing Tile Syndrome" I like his political videos too, but the ones that have done me the most direct good are the politics free ones.

If I have to make my partner laugh in order to tell that I need to save my marriage, I have chosen the wrong partner. Marriage is not all about laughter, rainbows and unicorn farts. You probably would not have been able to save your marriage even if you could make her laugh. It doesn't sound like it was you, it sounds like it was her.

I think you may have missed the point. When laughter becomes nonexistent in a relationship it's a signal that issues exist that need addressed. Laughter is a universal expression of enjoyment and relaxation. When laughter stops it's a warning sign that your partner is unhappy. If my wife stopped laughing at things she normally loved to laugh at I would know something is wrong. The point to the message is that we should recognize these things and take steps to bring back that laughter and happiness before it's gone forever. If it doesn't work out that's one thing, but when it goes down the drain because of ignorance of another's feelings it's a shame.

Maybe people aren't meant to be married, or marriage is not for everyone or biologically, maybe people only get together for a few years to rear children and after that it's time to start all over and it's not cause we want to, it's just a part of our nature. Marriage is outdated people, you don't have to be married to be with someone happily. Marriage is not for everyone.

What a depressing outlook on life. You cannot be patient and caring to one person "its human nature" you must always seek a new adventure. Marriage teaches lessons you cannot get anywhere else in life. Communication skills, learning to get along with different people, and most of all learning to love even when it doesn't come naturally anymore.
