Lolita, the controversial novel by Vladimir Nabokov, has left an indelible imprint on pop culture, for better or worse. Documenting the events of a man in his thirties kidnapping and lusting over his twelve-year-old stepdaughter, the novel continues to spark debate among readers and popular media consumers. Part of the novel's brilliance is that it holds up a mirror to the racist and sexist societal status quo, and the story is heavily referenced in pop songs including The Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me," Lana Del Rey's "Off to the Races," and "Guilty" by Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb. But at what point does the employment of the Lolita trope in pop music do more harm than good? Watch the full video to find out!
