  • How to separate the art from the artist is an incredibly complex and nuanced issue that affects the consumer in numerous ways. Whether it's being cognizant of the fact that our favorite filmmakers held bigoted world views, or that our favorite musicians may have abused their colleagues, family, significant others, and fans, grappling with problematic faves simply comes with the territory. But when does it no longer become acceptable to separate the art from the artist? And when should individuals be held responsible for the art that they consume? Let's take a closer look and find out.

I think you have to separate the art from the artist because we will never know the artist on a personal level. The closest we can get to them is appreciating their art. If you look into the personal histories of artists of any genre, you'll find behaviors and attitudes that you don't agree with.

You can't separate the art from the artist as you're not making the world a better place. The path of righteousness is not easy, my friend(s).

I would never want somebody to be triggered or in any way reminded of abuse because I am listening to an artist that I already knew to be abusive. Just because I am privileged to be emotionally okay listening to this music, I have to be aware of others needs. Specifically in the pop punk scene because it’s still happening and the victims (who in some cases are my friends and loved ones) deserve a life free of contact triggers. Having SWMRS on my playlist is never worth hurting someone like that. Amazing video. Keep up the great work.

I usually separate art from the artist but that line will be broken if what the artist is talking about in their lyrics becomes intertwined with their behavior outside the songs, from there I can no longer support.

Nico also introduced her son Ari to heroin when he was a minor. They used to shoot up together as a form of “bonding.” It’s strange how little judgment comes her way over that. Perhaps it’s because she was an “artist.” Speaking of which, she also recorded the life support machine her son was on while in a coma … to use in her music. Sick.

I just buy second hand cds off discogs and move the files on my phone, so even if it's a band like Daughters, my money isn't going to them anyway

I believe the separation between art and artist is almost impossible. For example, Marilyn Manson made an album about what he was doing to Evan, he used her image and abuse to promote his product, he used nazism as an aesthetic and, later on, his whole brand. Another example would be Crystal Castles and how everything Alice was being subjected to at the hands of Claudio was crucial to the bands music. Her lyrics, her on-stage performance, her fashion sense, her age, are all connected to her abuse and trauma.

Secondhand or p*racy is the way to go with these if the artist is alive

What would your reaction be if an artist is falsely accused of a crime.

I think the word trauma is getting thrown around like the word "the." It's becoming one of those go-to phrases that's merely a catch-all term for something merely unpleasant.... Sort of like such as other hits as problematic. Or triggering. Or unhinged..

  • @cafeAmericano

    Oh please.
