WTF Happened to Young Guns?

  • 1988's Young Guns is one of the best westerns of the last 35 years. Sure, there's also Tombstone, Unforgiven and The Quick and the Dead, but Young Guns is just so much fun. Indeed, Christopher Cain’s highly amusing and energetic tale of Billy the Kid and his participation with The Regulators in the Lincoln County War remains such a potent pop-cultural benchmark that, almost four decades later, an official sequel entitled Guns 3: Alias Billy the Kid (too old for it to called Young Guns 3?) is currently in pre-production. Original Young Guns writer John Fusco is back on board the upcoming sequel, with Emilio Estevez taking over the directorial saddle. As we look forward to the riotous return of Billy the Kid and Jose Chavez y Chavez, it’s time to recollect and celebrate the 35th anniversary of Young Guns by breaking down what inspired the movie, how it was developed, what went into the production, how historically accurate the story remains, and perhaps most enlightening, the treasure trove of on-set anecdotes and mischievous tomfoolery that the youthful cast thoroughly enjoyed while making the movie in the winter of 1988. Gear up, kick back, crack a brew, and stuff some chew…it’s time to find out WTF Happened to Young Guns once and for all!

    I remember watching this in the theatre with my dad and mom, and lil sister. When Billy headshot Murphy at the end, the whole theatre just went crazy. It was the first time I saw an audience celebrate together an on-screen villains death, it was amazing to see as a 7 year old kid 😂 My dad and me went to see it again a second time in the theatre, man those were some great memories with my dad 🧡

      Those movie experiences (back in the day) I too cherish, and will never forget. When the arms came up though the chair in Ghostbusters, and the whole packed theater screamed, it felt like we, as an audience, we were sharing a defining human experience together.

      Ok, you clearly stole this story from my diary. 🤣
      I had not thought about how it was the first time I had experienced a collective audience reaction (other than laughter) in a long time. But I do remember the cathartic excitement of that moment. I have since seen the movie several times throughout my life, & I use it as an example of a movie that is far more timeless than people realize. From the cinematography to the balancing of tension, humor, excitement, passion... and that cast, this movie really was so well done. (And now knowing that it was shot in the winter, I am even more impressed with the actors' performances). I have to get off of here now and go watch it again I decided.

      @@gankuverymuch ok, so I just rewatched it again for probably the 12th, maybe 15th time in my life, & I just noticed something for the 1st time:
      At about the 1 hr mark, when the boys are talking to Alex McSween, there is a whole _fully clothed mannequin_ standing in the background, posed with its hand on the edge of the roof. It's standing behind Steve throughout the whole scene. What in the world was that, & how am I just now noticing this for the first time?? Steve even looks back at it a couple of times kind of confused like.

    This is truly one of the most iconic westerns of the 1980's. I hope that when they do get on track with making the third movie, that the studio gets the film rights to the previous films, and gives them a proper re-issue on physical media; including but not limited to:
    - 4K UHD
    - Blu-ray/DVD
    - Digital Code
    I saw a display at a local Wal-Mart where they listed Young Guns alongside other westerns like The Hateful Eight and the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. Those westerns had a 4K release with digital code, while Young Guns had the standard blu-ray.
    I pray they make the upgrade....

    I was out in Lincoln County NM a few years ago. Toured the courthouse Billy escaped from. It was a cool little place to see.

    I remember seeing Young Guns at the theater in high school, bought the VHS as soon as it came out, it and YGII are my favorite all time movies...we must've watched them 1000's of times, in fact I still periodically watch them now, as they take me back to the good ole days...I sure hope they in fact, make the Young Guns III..great take on the flick bro.

    I love how you were able to bring up interesting facts I didnt know about a movie I love. This is after watching so many youtube clips comparing the movie to the real story and comic con reunions as well. For instance, I had no idea Tom Cruise was an extra.

    I had never watched a Western Film untill Young Guns came out and I only watched it since I was interested in the History of Billy the Kid and of course the Mystery of did he die by Pat Garrett or did he live to a ripe old age. I love both Young Guns and Young Guns 2.

    I actually like the sequel more than the original, and the original rules.

    Historians today have said that YOUNG GUNS is the most accurate portrayal of Billy The Kid.

    • @patrickspalding8045
      @patrickspalding8045 9 місяців тому +8

      Maybe his personality but the events of the two movies are not very accurate

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 9 місяців тому +8

      Actually a lot of it is. The buckshot Robert's situation did happen accept in real life he injured 5 regulators while killing Dick. Charlie Bowdrie's death was how they killed Doc in part 2. Pat Garret & Billy the kid weren't friends but knew of each other. The house he found Billy in when he actually killed him was a mutual friend of There's. Also there was really a Brushy Bill Robert's who said he was Billy the kid though most historians don't believe that

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 9 місяців тому +6

      Also the regulators really were trapped in a house however instead of a shootout they miraculously escaped and to this day no one can explain how

    • @JAdg75oo00
      @JAdg75oo00 9 місяців тому +4

      70% but yes quite accurate, aside from a few Minor details the big ones are Doc is ALREADY married to a girl BEFORE he met billy and actually got a happy ending never came back (Shavez coming back is actually more plausible due to records saying he relapsed back into crime) other then to that yes definitely, many of his confrontations and the words they say can actually be found and actually happened, and Emelios take on the character: "In his darkest of dangerous moods, his face always wore a smile. He ate, laughed, drank, laughed, rode, laughed, fought, then laughed; he would kill; then laugh."- an eye witness testimony. Sound familiar? 😂

    • @denismitrovic1860
      @denismitrovic1860 9 місяців тому +1

      It's the most accurate, because there aren't many adaptations of the Lincoln County War. I'd say the writers knew their history good, and most changes were just for the sake of a good flowing movie, but there are still many not so small diffferences to the real history.

    The 80s were an awesome time for many reasons, including music and the actors in the industry at that time. So many young, seemingly authentic and charismatic actors back then that hasn't really been seen since, or before (at this scale) for that matter. Try getting a group together today. You can't because they are all to haughty and self-important.
