WTF Happened to Napoleon Dynamite?

- Napoleon Dynamite was a smash hit in the summer of 2004. Made on a $400,000 budget in Idaho by a friendly group of young Mormons, including directed Jared Hess and star Jon Heder, the movie was a sensation at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. It was picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight, who gave the film a staggered release that allowed it to build solid word-of-mouth. By the end of that summer, if you attended a screening at your local arthouse, you likely saw at least a few people wearing “Vote for Pedro” t-shirts. Indeed, it grossed a stunning $44 million domestically, and that’s not even counting how well the merchandise from the film fared. By the time its DVD revenue was counted up, the movie had made tens of millions in profit.
So how did this scrappy indie become such a sensation? If this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie (written by Jake Dee, edited by Cesar Gomez and narrated by Mathew Plale), we look at how Hess and his pals made a smart, clean, hip indie comedy and stumbled upon a goldmine.
And, in case you’re wondering what happened to the Napoleon Dynamite gang, just because they may not be household names anymore doesn’t mean they haven’t gone on to great careers. After making the cult classic Nacho Libre and some lesser-seen films, director Jared Hess pivoted to non-fiction, directing two big true-crime hits for Netflix. One was Murder Among the Mormons, while the other, Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators, is one of the streamer's biggest non-fiction releases this summer.

I'm actually glad actors like Jack black weren't cast for the movie, the lesser known actors helps the charm of the movie I think
Can't stand Jack Black.
Too much money for not enough funny.
It does! Makes you feel like they picked the cast from the town
I don’t like jack Black anyway he’s. Not Funny 😁 🤮
Part of the reason this movie was so good is the perfect casting.
Well it’s a movie about ordinary people and lesser known helps that humble vibe
I love this movie. I think a sequel would be an absolutely terrible idea. Some movies should just be one and done.
Agreed. It was lightning in the bottle. Leave it well enough alone.
Agreed. I'm glad they didn't try to make a sequel
@@matthewrossilini5808the first one was bad enough.
Like Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Agreed. Plus we had the short lived animated series on Fox
The people who saw this in theaters liked it so much they would see it a second time, just to bring all their friends and/or family. It was that good.
My friends and I saw it 4 or 5 times in the theater. Like twice a week for 2 weeks. The theater would be packed each showing too. It was a cultural touchstone for our generation. If you were 16-25 it resonated.
I was friends with LeRoy Cooper, who plays Lafawnduh’s younger brother (he was actually her brother in real life too). He sadly was shot and killed about ten years ago. This movie would be on tv after that happened, and I couldn’t really watch it without getting sad. However, as time has passed, it is pretty cool to see that people still love this movie, and now I actually look forward to watching it through to the end with LeRoy’s scene. it’s hilarious!! He nails it. RIP LEROY.
Thanks for sharing that❤
Sry to hear that damn.
Awesome story, and rest in peace Leroy
@@andymurray5045appreciate that Andy! He was truly a beautiful person.
@@erickhart8046appreciate that Erick. He was the coolest guy you’d ever meet. Absolute shooting star gone too soon
Such a good movie. It's weird, fun, original, and just quirky enough to become a cult classic.
Moron
Like Scott pilgrim Buckaroo banzai Rocky horror Akira Erasedhead Flash Gordon and many more movie like this.
My girlfriend bought this on DVD and while I was at work watched it with my now oldest son. She said it was stupid and I wouldn’t like it, so I watched it alone, Holy shit i absolutely Loved it and laughed so hard it hurt! Some people are just used to traditional movies and I’m here to say thank goodness this movie isn’t!
You either Love it or hate it. There is no middle ground.
If you don’t laugh at “do the chickens have large talons” you might be aspbergs
Thank goodness Fox didn't step in and try to change things.
This. I didn't get it at first and then when he said "you should get your stuff from my locker I can't fit my nunchuks in there." I was like "oooohhh!" Then restarted the DVD and laughed at everything.
@@williambarringer6513I do have Asperger’s and it crack me up
A lightning in a bottle movie. The cast was absolutely perfect. I kinda wish they would leave the sequel idea alone because it would probably suck and diminish the first one. Another part though would absolutely love to see these characters again. I watched all the animated episodes and I honestly thought it sucked compared to the movie. Vote for Pedro!!!
any others movies came before it.
I was about to say they might actually do a good job on the sequel because the cartoon actually was pretty good, then I finished reading your comment lol. Idk I liked the cartoon 🤷🏻♂️
@@anothergamingchannel2656 That's cool, different strokes I guess. I loved the idea of it. That's why I watched them all but it was just too different from the movie. I really do think that movie was analogous to lightning in a bottle though. 🦙
Agreed. A sequel is not needed.
Also agree that this is a film that probably shouldn't have a sequel. Its charm for me was the believable offbeat characters that worked so well largely because they were unknown and came out of nowhere... and the strange sensibility and quirky atmosphere that they created to draw you into the general weirdness of the story line.
The atmospheric magic reminded me of PeeWee's Big Adventure, a product of Tim Burton's unique sensibilities and Danny Elfman's amazing mood music as a backdrop. Even if these qualities could be duplicated properly, it just seems like it couldn't have the same impact again.
I am from small town Montana and went to HS from 98-02, so I relate to this movie in many ways.
One of those examples of a the perfect mix of time, people and passion that can't be replicated.
One of the greatest comedies ever made. It’s something that is so unique with its dry humour, outstanding cast of no name actors, and hilariously stuck in the past look to it. Nothing else is really like it.
Agreed ! It's a masterpiece.
Still got my Vote Pedro badge.
I am not a big movie person but THIS movie I love. It is one of those rare times that I had to see a movie in a theater.
I don't think the magic of this film that used unknown actors could ever be replicated. Napoleon Dynamite, awesomeness. Legend
The guy that played Napoleon Dynamite went on to get casted for "Blades of Glory" a huuuuge Will Ferrel comedy movie.
That movie doesn’t get talked about enough!
Benchwarmers too!
He was in Monster house.
He was also in "The Campaign"
I can only assume he is really close friends to Will Ferrel :)
He was also in a movie with Billy Bob Thornton called "School For Scoundrels"
One of my favorite movies of the 2000s. I first saw it in college, and instantly loved it. I think a really big part of the movie's appeal, at least in the US, specifically comes from that 'stuck in the past' feeling. It's not just about retro nostalgia being cool. It's that, outside of the big culturally influential cities like Los Angeles and New York, a *lot* of rural and small-town communities are like that-- more on the conservative side, kind of in the middle of nowhere, and perpetually lagging behind the curve. Idaho may be the specific setting, but the movie could just as easily have been set in Kansas or Wisconsin or Alabama, and I think it still would've been much the same. Hollywood doesn't tend to set stories in places like that, at least not without processing them through its own filter-- probably because there's an assumption that nothing noteworthy ever happens in those places. So this movie comes off as a really genuine and unthreatening depiction of areas of the country that feel like they _never_ get proper representation in the media, and that's a huge boon for it.
I was working at a video store at the time, and saw this movie as a "timecode" (a preview tape meant only for preview purposes). It became a cult hit amongst the staff; "you have to watch this one".. it just tickled a spot nobody expected. Odd, wholesome, retro, deadpan.. it felt like Hess knew *exactly* what he was doing. My favourite scenes are "the slap", the mailorder time machine, and the moment when the bully is trying to steal a student's bike, and Pedro's cousins roll up in their low-rider. 😂
Would be sick if you still had the tape
Pedro offers you his protection
hells yeah! I was working at a video store too. The whole staff loved it. (RIP video stores. What a fun and weird family of coworkers)
I love the way you can just about hear Kip writing the lyrics to his wedding song early in the film when he's sat at his word-processor. Seems odd that during the film's initial release, the pay-off to that set-up, Kip singing at the wedding, wasn't yet included!
I can't even remember how many times I've started laughing at the scenes on this video remembering the movie. I have got to watch it again.
I was in college at the time, and its crazy to think how unaware of what was going on in mainstream culture those few years. We didnt have cable, just watched dvds and pirated movies. And the internet was only really being used for instant messenger and sharing porn files! I came across this movie and was sharing it across my friend group and we all thought we found some insane hidden gem. Had no idea until years later that it was massive and just hearing u mention now their advertising budget, i saw none of it. Crazy.
Right? 😂 I was in high school and I think about that all the time. Like how the hell did we find out about stuff without the internet? I didnt even have cable yet remember everyone thinking Richard Gere put a gerbil up his bum in the late 90s. It became so notorious that even south park did an episode about it. Same with this movie, it wasnt promoted, or talked about nationally yet every school in the country was quoting it daily 😂 weird how things used to be. You only knew about something if someone told you.
Because of this movie, I’ve been wearing cargo shorts every single day just for the sole purpose of storing tater tots in case an opportunity arises to acquire some extras I can’t eat in the moment.
Thank you, Napoleon, for teaching high school me about preparedness.
Truly one of the greatest films ever made. Please, under no circumstances, ever make a sequel.
There was an animated series in 2012. I Never watched it. But I heard it’s terrible.
Idk why the cartoon got so much hate. Felt like the same humor as the movie to me. It's just a little more over the top since it's animated and easier to make totally unrealistic things happen
"Your mom goes to college!"
It makes no sense whatsoever but it is SO hilarious!
Kip running over & smashing the Tupperware into bits & his reaction after might be the greatest part of that movie!
I love this movie. Endless quotables. But omg 😮 it's been 20yrs? I'm so old😢😅😅
The store where Napoleon finds the sai reminds me so much of this weird Sears Outlet store I went to with my mom a few times in the early ‘90s. I think it was actually some sort of store where Sears sold catalog return items. It had the same vibe as the store in the movie.
Napoleon Dynamite resonates with everyone because It reminds us of those old road trips we've all taken. Where we passed through small, forgotten towns, and thought to ourselves what life would be like there. I think this movie captures our cartoonish, stereotypical perception of small-town America, making it timeless and loved.
If coach woulda put me in fourth quarter we'd have been state champions, no doubt. No doubt in my mind.
a lot of people consider this movie a cult classic i consider it just Classic
Definitely
Pedro came to my hotel 3 months ago. I was the only one that recognized him tho
This is one of my family's favorite movies. I interviewed for graduate school in Logan, UT, and the grad student I stayed with took me on a Napoleon Dynamite tour. We drove around to the various places scenes were filmed, I got a picture of me on the volley ball court, etc., and we went to the thrift store where he bought his suit. I bought my husband a tie he still has. I also snapped a picture of Chuck Mangione 8 track tape! I thought it was hilarious, how appropriate and dated that was.
One of my favorite comedies of all time, the fact john heder did so much is legendary
I love this movie! An all time fav
Love the ending credits you added!
I'll never understand why Fox cancelled the cartoon series. Everyone I knew liked it.
I begged my grandma for this dvd for my 11th birthday lol
Did she give it to you?
I love this movie! The dry humor is hilarious. I would love to see a sequel, but they really would have to maintain the exact same tone, or fans of the first movie are going to hate it.
I remember selling vote for Pedro shirts at Spencer's back in the day. My buddy threw a cpl viewing parties with endless tots. Gonna have to rewatch this one soon
I only watched this movie because people kept saying I look like Napoleon Dynamite.
It was perfect. I remember how it took over hot topic in like weeks.
It’s not actually a hilarious movie, but it is though. So deeply quotable and clean honestly.
I live in Idaho Falls Idaho just north of Preston and it be cool to meet Jered Hess and the cast while they’re filming Napoleon Dynamite 2
The girl in this movie, Tina Majorino was also in Waterworld(1995) with Kevin Costner.
Holy Shit! That IS her
@@TheNervousnation💯💯💯
@@TheNervousnation she was so adorable in that movie
Oh snap!
@@Sammsy1126 Perfectly balanced as all things should be.
I watch this every few years or so , their is no point trying to recommend this to your friends , they have to discover it on their own , great movie
I remember wondering what year the movie was supposed to be set in. It seemed like the 80's to me but I thought it was supposed to be the present.
This movie, just like Idiocracy, fell onto my radar when I saw it advertised on the IMDb home page around the time it was released.
He's still playing teatherball. GOSH!!!!
This is beautiful...thank you!
My art class analyzed the drawing scene, it turns out that drawing the nose is hard
The trick is to use as few lines and as little shading as possible until it’s recognizable as a nose. No more.
I for one would love to see a Napoleon sequel.
not everything needs a sequel
We need a sequel
Well, first it was made, then it was released. That's 100% of what happened to it.
Growing up in Utah (and seeing the original Peluca short at BYU film fest) this movie reminded me so much of my childhood. It is fun that it was also such a widespread phenomenon!
I watched this recently as an adult and I gotta say it holds up. I think I like it even more.
I watched it with my son when he was like 8 or so. He absolutely loved it.
Napoleon Dynamite in drag would look exactly like Taylor Swift.
I like how they waited like 10 years after the release of the hit movie to make an animated series, ensuring that it would bomb.
The two leads napoleon and Pedro both have identical twin brothers.
It makes me think of crank and crank 2 😂
You should do a video on their other film , The Sasquatch Gang.
I was in high school when this movie came out and can attest to the cultural impact.
I also watched it again recently and can say it without a doubt still holds up and it's hilarious!
I was a teen too and the amount of times I heard lines from the movie was a lot. Vote for Pedro pins, buttons, etc. I think I remember only mean girls and Borat having this power. I went to see it with my brother and he still quotes it haha.
It was like a send up of John Hughes films in the 80s, with an actual nerd instead of someone who just wasn't in the popular clique.
Those films didn't see plausible to me as the protagonist (especially Sixteen Candles) wasn't awkward or nerdy yet was portrayed as such. They seemed pretty average. Or they would be portrayed as coming from a poor household, but their house didn't look poor to me. The misfit Alison in The Breakfast Club was portrayed as outdated and scruffy, yet that look caught on in the early 90s, so she was 5 years ahead of her time.
This one of the Greatest early 2000s movie ever made with great comedy, memorable story, killer soundtrack, amazing casts, & it such a damn great film that it never get boring seeing it over and over again.
Its wild that the kind of people that dont get this movie are actually in the movie. They're Uncle Rico.
I didn’t even know I needed this
I was only a couple years out of college when this released. I remember vividly the hysteria surrounding it.
A great example of telling an honest and story with great characters will transcend any algorithm or industry category.
A perfect time capsule of how long the influence of 80s style and extended into the 90s and early 00s.
One of my favorite films that shaped me as a director when I saw it at age 12... I thought it was gonna be boring but it was unlike anything else I'd seen at the time - almost MUMBLECORE in nature, and that primed me for the films of Richard Linklater such as SLACKER that blew my mind as well. Shows that even a simple, down-to-earth comedy like this can be a super important piece of art!
Although this movie did very well, my assumption is that it didn't make those involved independently wealthy. Which is one of the reasons I can see them being in favor of a sequel.
I don't really think this movie needs a sequel. If they do one, they need to be really careful. They tried it with Anchorman 2 only 10 years after the original and it was terrible.
I saw this in the theater when it came out with my younger sister. We both were confused the whole movie and only laughed twice.
low I Q family
This movie is 20 years old? Holy crap. I'm old.
I first watched this at 4am in the morning after coming home from 2007 NYE festival with a bunch of friends completely bent on MDMA.
It was such a bizarre trip watching the movie in that frame of mind and was immediately burnt into my conscience forever.
7:35 Heder and Majorino worked on the final dance scene choreography together.
12:50 The final dance scene was completely improvised.
Jared Hess is an underrated director
Love it hopefully they do make part2
He brought back the moon boots
I got this at blockbuster and the girl sat their stone faced while I laughed, I shoulda known right then to dump her but ended up dating her for like 4 more years
To this very day I wish they would have made a sequel about Napoleon and Pedro taking the bus to visit Kip and Lafawnda in Detroit.
While I don’t want a sequel,I would definitely watch one if they made it.
Jesus JoBlo, am i drunk or do i count 12 uploads in two week?
That's insane. Well done dude!
Edit - now i count 25 uploads in 2 weeks🤯
Something thing that no one mentions is that it is beautiful, both visually and in the vibe it gives out.Oh and one more thing, it's perfect.
I love this movie so much, I’m pretty sure I still have the DVD. When his uncle threw that steak, my bf at the time and I just about laughed so hard we peed on ourselves!! I watched this and Nacho Libre daily. Please don’t touch this movie it was a once in a lifetime moment. But we would love to see more from this group. It’s inspiring how it started as a school project.
NO TO A SEQUEL. Like seriously look at all the 20+ years later sequels over the years like Bill & Teds, Coming to America, Slap Shot, Indiana Jones: Crystal Skull and whatever. They are all terrible! I personally see the Napoleon Dynamite tv show as the sequel us original fans wanted (though always hated what they did to Kip). It was always more than enough, though wish they would have given use more than 6 episodes.
Growing up in the country and near a small town I can say it actually does feel like an 80s time capsule. I was born in the 90s but feel like I grew up in the wood grained 70s.
The short-lived cartoon wasn't too bad
I remember watching it, and liking it, but also it was missing something I couldn't put my finger on.
@@hellomark1it was more sanitized since it was a prime time toon on reg TV. It was tamer than family guy and about as edgy as king of the hill
The first time i watched it i fell asleep and thought it was crap. I was very wrong and i am happy I watched it again.
As someone from Preston, I have a different viewpoint from everyone else. You could describe it as flashbacks.
I went to go see this movie with my current wife when we were teenagers and her cousin at some rinky dink indie theatre in Rockville, MD. I dont think i have ever laughed so much in a theatre. I bought the DVD n watched it several times afterwards and i still laugh at it today watching these old clips. I remember seeing the poster for this movie in a used CD store and I knew i had to go see it.
I remember this movie coming out and seen it a year later in 2004. I was laughing so hard. Myself and a couple of friends of mine got together and had a Napoleon Dynamite night where we had tater tots and dang quesadillas.
My son who passed away reminds me of ND.
He was going to an alternative school with gang members. One threatened him and he made a really loud goat noise. They left him alone after.
But he also had some killer dance moves.
RIP TRAVIS
if you watch it with commentary on it's funny all over again
Frank Sinatra's "Balls in Yo Jaws" used to play at my uncle's house all the time when I was young! I remember him picking me up in his van after t-ball practice, it was cool because it always had candy! He always had a warm popsicle in his pants too, cream-filled I think? He used to compliment me on how good I could keep secrets. The song really takes me back to a better time!
It was the summer before I turned 18 and after hanging out with the wrong crowd for a few years I'd ended up addicted to oxycontin when this came out, and through means I won't explain I ended up with a pharmacy of the stuff. Some girl from my highschool showed up at my door and started camping out at the apartment I was living in and I took her and my ex-GF (yes, she was my ex at the time but she was hanging around too) to see this movie in the theater. Now I don't know if anyone reading this knows this, but opiates totally numb your emotional response. Probably the only emotion you'll really experience is anger, frustration, irritation, etc... but sadness goes away, joy and laughter disappear, and you're mostly just totally numb. Somehow, even though I was high as a kite and numb as frig, when saw this at the theater it just punched me in the gut with its clever sense of humor. I laughed so hard I cried, and that wasn't something that I'd ever experienced while high as a kite before, or since. The creators and writers on this film knew what was up, and I still can't believe how hilarious it was for me in that state. It was magical. I'm not saying you should do drugs, definitely don't do that, being hooked on opiates at such a young age led to me basically wasting the first decade of my adult life. I wish I'd joined the military or done something else instead, because it was the biggest fattest waste of my life and it's a miracle I survived because many of the people I knew from back then didn't. Anyway, I just wanted to share my personal experience with this awesome film.
More people need to hear about this shi- I've wasted 6-7 years of my life doing rebar/steel and the back breaking labor got me hooked on that shit too.. To make it all worse, it wasn't prescribed, it was just handed over to me, "keep working kid" I'm in Toronto, and the push is so f'ing bad My dumb ass witnessed and seen a man fall 55 storeys to his death, for the higher ups to want to open the job the next day and continue the push.
Despite all the efforts and work. All those years and labor, to be taxed and to have your social worker not even care about your history... As a Newfoundlander who's broken himself to help build the City of Toronto, the working class homies like me, and apparently even homies like you. Have been abandoned dude.. When people look at homies like us they don't see meritocracy.
It's so f'ing sad.. Then I'm here commenting on a dumb movie review that barely has any influence on my life.
They kept it simple, somewhat relatable and the corny comedy that actually turned out to be funny af made this movie what it is. Big props to the actors as well, the guy giving input bout grabbing the steak while it’s being cut, it’s that type of spontaneous in the moment thing I’m talking bout that helped make it (have a real flow to the movie)
That SpongeBob clip about being old and dried out has me dying lol
I remember loads of people wearing Vote for Pedro t-shirts. Good times!
A sequel would be awesome. I was a freshman in college when this came out & I wanna say it stayed in my DVD player for a month straight lol
All I see is a bunch of friends having a great time doing what they love. Best recipe for success all around. 😊
One of my most favorite movies of all time.
Me too
But it was my favourite first, before it became yours.... Therefore it's closer to my heart😊
as i'm watching this video and seeing the scenes from the movie, i realize every shot is brilliant, and funny, and nostalgic. it's really just a masterpiece this film.
Kip running over the Tupperware is one of maybe 3 times in my life where I've laughed so hard that I couldn't breathe. 😂
I remember a radio interview with Jon Heder just AS the movie started to get huge. He stated then that there was NO plans for a sequel, even as of 2005 or so. As stated below, one and done.
Vote for Pedro one of my fav cult classics
I wonder if Hollywood ’s gonna try and make a sequel or reboot
I was living in Europe when this came out. When i came back to the states a few months later in December, I went to go buy the DVD, but it was sold out at everywhere! I had never seen a movie do that during the DVD era.
