Whenever I see a motorcycle rider with his dog or parrot on his bike, then I know he's got a friend for life.
Years ago I went through a divorce and then you realise you're not left with many friends.. Married people stay together and you are no longer part of that group.. So as you become older { Not Dead } if you get asked to go for a ride with someone you meet that's good enough for me.
Acquaintances are people you just kinda know through the years. Friends are people you have a kinship with that you keep in touch, want to visit, and hang out with even if it’s been a few years…
Damen, my late mother (God bless her soul) always said to me, Son, you've got a lot of mates but how many friends do have!
Another thing she always witnessed & said, I'm afraid to say, you also have a lot of fair weather friends!
Haven't you noticed that when it's smooth sailing in their lives you never hear from them and then when it's troubled waters they seem to reappear & hang around again!!!

I agree with you. A friend is someone who will come help you anytime that you need help. Call them at 2:00AM in the morning and ask them to come get you out of a jam and they will be there as soon as they can. I'm 80 yrs. old, and I can count on one hand my true friends, but I know many people and have known most of them for years.

Great video and a very tricky topic... People will always have an opinion of themselves and others. Friendships unfortunately will come and go throughout life as we get older. The one lesson i learnt in life is that you will meet and have many acquaintances, but when it comes down to true friendships....you can usually count them on one or both hands! Life life and enjoy it......ride safe mate 😎

Friendship takes time and loyalty and respect just as you said. Too often Americans are quick to call someone a friend which I think devalues the meaning. Better to say a crony than friend most of the time. Can't believe that one guy in Oz for 18 years and still has his American accent. I started picking up the Aussie accent (subconsciously) after only 2 weeks in Sydney - love it - best accent in the world!
acquaintance is a positive for me. I have friends with different values than me, I am an individual. I can learn from their values I admire, and ignore the morals and values I don't agree with. I live with my wife everyday and she is my friend with common values and goals. My friends ,I don't live with and probably don't want to.

I’ve found that there are some folks I build an instant connection with & feel likely they will be lifelong friends .. I have friends I’ve been with for most of my lifetimes..
Conditional friends I have no time for .. I admire the diversity of humans , don’t choose to spend time with folks I don’t like ..
Ultimately I believe everyone you meet is meant to be in your life for lessons needed / needing to be learned 😊 for what ever time they are

Good friends and rides make life palatable.
Great topic Aymen, motorcycle's and Harley's in particular have brought me some great friendships and a couple of good mates, at the start of 2024 i decided get out of my comfort zone and let my walls down and be more outgoing,, so lately i find myself in coffee shops shooting the breeze with new friends that once were just people i knew, it's not easy but I'm having a real go and I'm enjoying it and the growth in confidence.

A true friend is there by you through the best & worst times. I'd never ask someone to choose a side, we must all have the freedom to choose. Doesn't mean they are right or wrong, it's just they are seeing things from a different angle or a certain amount of info e.g someone see's a number 6 however someone looking from another stand point see's a 9, neither are wrong. I'd rather respect them for an honest answer than agree with everything. It's how we learn & grow, that's a true friend.
A friend in my view is a person who accepts you for how you are not how you should be , even if years have passed since your last encounter it's like as if no time has passed , that's true friendship , now brotherhood is a whole new level of friendship in its own right
I have a lot of acquaintances and I refer to many people as "buddies". True friends (by my personal definition), I have only a few. I visited one of those this past spring. We live about 12 hours apart. We were talking and he told me I was one of his true friends and that he knew, if he called and said he needed me, I'd jump in the car no questions asked. And that's true. Because that's what friends do.

Old School has GONE, I remember back in the 70s meeting other like minded rider who would end up living at my place, or me at theirs. Been in many social groups, havent found one where I could say I made a real friend, and Im a real friendly bugga lol

In the HD community we have mates & family, it's about trust love & respect with a open hand without being judgemental. A real mate will always become family, that person who has your back and at the same time has the strength to say to you straight up....ya fcked up be honest with yourself, learn from it and we move forward together.

In answer to your question about acquaintances, I always considered it derogatory because they were those who we don’t confer the importance of a friend. Personally, I have one friend of 48 years and that’s it. And that is enough. With too many people “wearing” politics, religion, wokeness, sexuality and anything else that puts people into tribes, on their sleeves it makes me and maybe others feel that true friendship is not really possible. Better to be your own best friend and friendly to all those we meet. Because we all take the journey alone in the end, but having good mates make that journey that much better.
I have moved to a new area & finding it hard to meet female riding friends… 2hours away from major cities where all the rides happen… I’m just glad i do have my husband around lol
yes - remote location makes it much harder and your spouse can also be your best friend
read this article on a study that was done. It said, "On average, a person will only have 4 close friends in their lifetime." That would be a human, dog, cat, or wife. people have acquaintances, few close friends. Im 72, I can say, I haven't had a close friend since the military. I thought i had some close friends after the military. I guess they proved me wrong. I guess im lucky. My wife is my only friend now.

Right now our local chapter is divided in 3. There was a problem between 2 members with one of them doing something really bad to the other ….. bad as in “criminal offence kinda bad”, but they were sleeping together, so now the group is divided in 1- The “that’s their private problem” group. 2- the “private or not, I can’t stand being near that harpy” group. And 3- about 15 new guys who don’t have a clue what’s going on.
Sucks… nobody has asked me to take sides, but it’s way too awkward way to often.

I get how ppl might think the term "acquaintance" might carry a negative but mature people will understand. It's not meant as disrespect but someone may consider themselves as "friend" but not understand what that entails. I have many acquaintances and one friend. But I like to say, I'm sociable but not social. I don't fit it. I accept that and choose to ride alone(at least I think it's my choice). I tried joining a club(LEMC). A lot of talk about brotherhood but when I needed their support, it wasn't there. I will say I enjoy riding in a pack because it's a test of skill.

I just wanna asked how was the Pine grove hotel for a feed? as I've passed there a billion times but never stopped in...Great roads to there if you went up Boundary/ Manestar / Alber roads.. However to answer your question...friends are those that you want to keep seeing and talking to. After a ride not just on a ride.
I am a man with a very few good friends. However I have many friends. Some friends I've only know briefly and never gotten to know well. To me they are friends until they give me some reason to feel otherwise. After which they might be an acquaintance. I live in Canada, But I am British. Many of the locals don't understand when I refer to some of my real friends as Mates. Or how we treat each other. You can tell when someone is a good mate of mine, we don't appear to treat each other correctly or with respect.

I mostly ride by myself fxdb but would appreciate a wave back while passing on the road every now and then , seems i get more waves from jappo riders , 90 percent of harley riders trying be to tuff to wave , very disappointing
