I’ve never understood gatekeeping with bands. I’ve had bands that I’ve loved for 20 years become popular again because of tiktok. I think it’s great that younger people are keeping our favourite bands alive and getting to enjoy them! The alternative scene has always been kind of toxic in that way. If something becomes ‘mainstream’ it’s somehow embarrassing to love them anymore. Why don’t people want their favourite bands to be mega successful and make a ton of money? We all need to learn to share ❤
The reason for gatekeeping stuff is because generally z has literally tried to cancel metallica... for being Metallica. They've done it with other older stuff because all these things are "problematic." I don't care about enjoying the music. I care that they're listening to one song and loving that one song and then suddenly look into them and go "ew, they're not pure enough for my sensitive senses. They need to disappear now." And then try to make Metallica disappear.
I'm a fan of Ghost, not because they're doing something new or cutting edge: quite the opposite. They are refreshing nostalgia band of BOC/DIO/King Diamond esque 70s/80s rock. The fact that Tobias is like Pete Steele and a ton of the lyrics are 100% tongue-in-cheek making fun of some of these people. They are also making solid music videos (which again nostalgic) is great to see, as it isn't so much of a thing these days. It is good to have bands for youth/new metal fans to get on board with. Bands like Cage the Elephant are kind of rock but definitely not metal. Mastodon is older now, but still very accessible, Avatar's Hunter Gatherer is great, Ghost Prequelle was very accessible considering the situation of everything. I got started in metal by listening to Ozzy, White Zombie, Alice in Chains (I see them more metal, not grunge) in late 90s. You gotta ask what are the band options people have today (with band members not being >50yrs old or the band albums being 10-20+ yrs ago), because those will always been plentiful, but its whats somewhat 'current' for a given genre that will be cool to listen to, and following the 'latest stuff'.
Completely agree. I don’t understand the hate for Ghost. They’ve always been deeply tongue in cheek and a tribute to sounds of the past. They never claimed to be anything else but people react to them as if they’ve made claim they’re saviors of modern metal…
There is a cognitive dissonance between their look and sound. They are most certainly a hard rock/occasional metal band (and that's how I kind of like it). Considering what passes for metal for the gate keepers these days.... Iron Maiden, AC/DC and even Motorhead don't count as metal. So meh to the gatekeepers.
I've been a Ghost BC fan since 2011 with Opus. The first time I saw them live there was less than 100 people in the crowd to see dudes in costumes and candlelight.... you were a weirdo if you listened and it was a community of weirdos.... I saw them on the Imperatour in a venue sold out with 15k+ people... it was a complete mind fuck (no lie i cried a bit) not for the gatekeeping fact but from seeing the progress theyve made... as long as people love the music and the respect the creativity... welcome to the Ritual
the worst part are the kiddires going around spamming everywhere that I am so special because I know te leeriks. Not unless the original writer comes out and expounds upon the meaning of the lyrics that he wrote, you don't know shit. You just have your interpretation of what he wrote
Imagine if our parents had canceled us for listening to their music. Getting kicked out of the house at 12 years old because I don't know all the words to a Black Sabbath song.
Back in the day, going to a show and buying a 7 inch was the best way to get into bands. It's the way things were done in the DC/Richmond Hardcore scene in the late 80's/90's. Even if we didn't know the band, we went to the show because "hey, it's a show"
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA It was the best, and it was even better if you happened to have a tape or 2 to trade to people. Thats how i got into AFI and a few other bands.
Same.. best case scenario, you might have a compilation tape with a few songs of the headline act, but you'd be lucky to have heard of more than 1 of the support bands.
7:12 This is exactly what happened to me! I heard Mary on a Cross in a tiktok comp on youtube a few months before Impera, and now they are my favorite band. I can't imagine thinking that other people are undeserving of discovering them. Even if someone just likes this one song, who cares? Music is meant to be enjoyed.
Tobias forge said that his goal is to make people happy with their music and performances. The people who don't want Ghost's music to reach new people, whatever caviar they may add, aren't true fans. I just gate kept gate keepers lol.
Same but in the same time I’m happy for the band, because in many interviews TF said he wanted to be as big as Metallica, and now look at their Spotify page
Realistically most of these TikTokers don’t care about Ghost or the song. They will just use it as a trend and get hype for Ghost and move on. The ones that actually get into the band will become fans and enjoy the music. So either way it’s a win/win for the band so just enjoy what you like, and don’t care about others.
@@John_Souls a single can refer to either a single song, or a record release that has one song on the front and one on the back. So this does fit the second definition
That’s just how Twitter is, though. Same with Reddit … may as well be the same anymore. I mean, look at the hot steaming garbage political takes that make their rounds on both sites. It’s no surprise the general user acts that way over a band gaining recognition on an app they despise because a large portion of the youth uses it. I see it a lot within the Reddit HipHopHeads sub complaining about the new gen, and any metal-related sub gatekeeps all classics as if their lives depended on it. Doesn’t matter what trends on TikTok, they (speaking in general) will always be assmad over it.
Same thing happened to Caravan Palace with Wonderland. I'm glad more people got into them, they need all the recognition they can get because they are fantastic.
Imagine people getting mad at us during the 90s when discovering bands like fear factory and Alice in chains through movies like Street fighter 2 and mortal Kombat?
Yeah those of us who grew up in small rural towns with really no way of knowing about alternative subcultures and music discovered a lot of music that way. Korn "Blind" played during the Street Fighter anime movie. I wasike 8 lol🤘🏿
As a fan I’m glad they’re getting more popular but I kinda hate that people are using their songs for cheap likes and clicks but it happens to all music these days
Tiktok helped me discover Emmure, because of Solar Flare Homicide being used in Metal Tiktoks, and Flag of the Beast. I am now a Huge fan of Emmure. And because of it, I've delved deep into Metal. I hate when songs get overused in Tiktok, because I'll end up hating the song because of constantly hearing the same part replayed. But, in the case of Metal, I'll hear it, and probably become a fan of the band, and same goes for Punk, and Electric.
That’s awesome. I got into Emmure back in 2008, seeing an ad for their then new album The Respect Issue in Alternative Press. Checked em out on MySpace and been a die hard fan ever since. I’m old and don’t use Tik Tok but I’m stoked to see my fav band get some love on there and discovered by a new generation of fans. Keep it up brother
Ghost is amazing live. They're the best live act I've ever seen. I'm a big fan and I'm happy for the kids who heard MOAC and decided to buy a ticket to see them. They are in for a treat. Also, Spiritbox is the opening act, and I'm so happy that these kids are gonna get introduced to them as well.
I just can’t bring myself to use it outside of the _major_ privacy issues it has that’s beyond any usual app and personal data. Also, it’s just not for me. It’s like when boomers started using Facebook after the period of college invites only (which was a nice time), and well, we see how that went. I want no part in that lol.
As a cultured fellow, 1 chef comes with 1 ladle. You can add a chef get 2 ladles. When the stove has 3 pots and 2 storage drawers. You still have room for another ladle if the stove is turned up high enough :D
Reminds me of the MySpace b00tal days back in 2007 when all the cargo pant wearing long curly hair head banger metal heads who hated breakdowns and disliked that Metal was being heard by young People
Singing into hair brushes, tennis rackets as guitars (I couldn't afford a real air guitar ;) ) were hallmarks/in joke of my 80's childhood. Long may it continue.
They should be happy that Ghost is so big now, they are here to stay. That means more albums and shows in more parts of the world for fans of that band.
Found Ghost about four years ago, and I have also been a lifelong Metallica fan. I feel Tik-Tok always finds a way to target the best bands out there and ruin them to oblivion.
I swear when people hit 25 - 30 years old they choose a path: Become a gatekeeper, or Don't Give a Fuck. Too many people are becoming the Gatekeeper. Ill go to work and see 22 year olds like (meh only the old shit is good). Like wtf are you a boomer already bro cmon
You’re right, and I can’t stand gatekeepers. I’m just happy to see younger people getting into any kind of rock. That song has held a special place in my heart since it came out, so I’m excited that so many new people are finding their own joy in it. To me, there’s only rule that matters when it comes to old and new fans: don’t be a dick.
@@johnporch8392 it’s also the opinion of literally every other comment on anything related to Ghost… Ghost plays music that sits well alongside plenty of early wave metal. I suppose “British Steel” by Judas Priest isn’t metal either is it?
The real irony is that Stranger Things wasn't made for millennials and zoomers, it was made for gen x people like me for the nostalgia factor. The fact that millennials and zoomers are so obsessed with it just shows how badly todays music and teen culture sucks.
Basically it's like a chain . People lessening The music on a famous show or on TikTok and after that they go to Spotify to her the music of the band . And that Creta a good feed back on Rock . I don't use TikTok but i support . Because it's a channel for people to now rock
I've been Ghost fan since forever and I am beyond happy that more people are discovering this band. I don't have tik tok and I have no idea why Mary on a Cross became popular there but hey.... we should be happy that people start to like music like Ghost or Metallica.
Truth is, boomers and Gen X are the reason rock is dead in the mainstream. They don’t care for any music aside from their classic rock hits playlists and radio rotation. So much they don’t even support their favorite bands’ new releases.
I’m so happy to see Pierce the Veil trend on TikTok. I remember when Chemical Kids and Mechanical Brides came out when I was in middle school. Hopefully TikTok creates a younger generation of rock fans.
Been a fan since the EP before they formed PTV and I will always love seeing them get any sort of trending. Easily one of the better pop punk bands. Just sad Mike isn't in the next album..whenever that is haha.
I first heard Ghost from Cirice being played regularly on my local rock station that I listened to while at work because all I had available there was a radio with no aux or Bluetooth capabilities. Then Square Hammer came out and I fucking loved it. I started really digging Ghost but never dug too deep into their discography in my free time. Then I heard Mary on a Cross. A perfect pop rock song in my opinion, and that's not a knock on it at all. It's just a great song like how I've really been into Come and Get Your Love by Redbone in the last year. As I get older I realize that great music is great music regardless of genre.
Been a fan since 2016. I am super happy people are finding a band that has been a big part of my life. Welcome to all the new fans and hope you stay! We are a chaotic but fun bunch of fans!
I'm not a gatekeeper by any means. I show people whatever is new to me. Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they roll their eyes and sometimes they love it. It's pretty cool how easy it was to get people into Ghost though.
I discovered ghost through the funko pop , I was really into collecting about 5 months ago and saw papa emeritus 3 on the funko website and had to cop because I thought it looked cool then I checked them out and have been a fan ever since. The funko pop now sits on the top of my collection
This may sounds strange, but I'm kind of interested to se if these TikTok kids will ever use an industrial song and how they would contextualize it. I think it would be cool to see an industrial band like Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly get a viral hit like this.
I don't know if people realize this but it's ALWAYS one song that gets you into a band. No matter who they are, if you hear a song you like, you're likely to delve deeper into their catalog; if the first song you hear from a band sucks, you're not likely to become a fan. It's really not that crazy once you realize that. I wasn't a fan of Metallica until I heard whatever the first song I heard from them was (it's been like 25 years, I can't remember). Same thing for all the other bands I like. I've also discovered bands from going to see other bands live, and that's always cool. I hadn't listened to Fever 333 when I went to see Bring Me The Horizon and came out being a fan of the band as they absolutely stole the show. It's awesome to discover new bands randomly, whether it's UA-cam suggestions or TikTok or whatever.
I will forever worship TikTok and Stranger Things for making me aware of Ghost's existence. I love the entirety of their catalogue, and very much enjoy Repugnant and Subvision. And I really like Persner's songwriting, it's very interesting and distintive even If I don't love every MCC song.
The chat on this one is top tier.. a lot of Jimmies were rustled Edit: also thanks for the influx of new fans because I doubled my money on my sold out ghost tickets.
Discovered ghost back in 2016 I think after hearing Ciricie on the radio on a school bus ride home. Weird that I discovered a band from the radio that recently.
I couldn't get into Ghost when I first heard them years and years ago, but I'm *loving* Mary on a Cross (your video was the first time I've heard it). Cheers
Idk if this is true, but some of the discourse ive seen on new fans, is that some of them are body shaming some of the band members. Everyones constantly finding music so im not upset about that, but if there are new fans entertaining body shaming then thats not okay. But i really love ghosts interactions and connections with fans, new fans and those peering in. Its really nice to see and nice to see people finding them. They are all super talented and deserve the best♡
Good music will always prevail! It's so funny how people tried really hard to get rid of gatekeeping and yet it just comes back in another circle of new people telling others that they can't. I don't give a shit if people gatekeep or don't. There is no way to stop it. It is up to you if you are going to listen to them or enjoy what you like. I've known this since the 90's and my music taste is very different and spans over many different ages and I never gave a shit if people like my music or not. Yes it hurts, but music heals the broken soul.
I’m super interested in the origin of how these older songs are getting picked up and going viral on tiktok. Also how different songs are used for a very specific theme of a video genre that doesn’t even go with the song. Lol
im a really big fan of ghost i love them ive been to their concerts and i have merch and im happy for them for all this love and attention but people who are but the people are making fun of some of the members im really happy but i understand gatekeeping bc some people make the fandom weird i just hope the fandom stays okay and goor tho
I was initially disappointed when I went to a Korn and Rob Zombie show and Korn ended up being the headliner. Knew maybe two songs. After that show, I became a true Korn fan. Like you said, everyone was an amateur at one point.
I bought tickets to see loads of bands having only heard one or two songs. Back when you would have to leave an mp3 downloading overnight, we would go to the rock clubs, hear a great tune and go see bands based on that.
I think some of these gatekeepers just don't like being reminded how they and what they listened to as teens are now getting old. Young adults who were babies back then getting into it sure highlights your mortality. Like everyone else ever, I think the music that was out when I was a teen is the best music scene so when I see the next generation getting into it I feel vicarious pride rather than like I'm under some kind of threat. It's not like I wasn't listening to the previous generation's teen music when I was a teen. E.g. I was 2 when Master Of Puppets came out and I still rocked out to that as a young adult in the 2000s.

If something becomes ‘mainstream’ it’s somehow embarrassing to love them anymore. Why don’t people want their favourite bands to be mega successful and make a ton of money? We all need to learn to share ❤
When you said that there are teens that were 2 or 3 years old when Pierce the Veil was popular, I had an existential crisis.
Pretty sure the gate keepers are mad cause a bunch of young girls/women are liking their band.
“Whoops, I didn’t mean to like that”
Alright, buddy. If you say so… 😉
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm just happy more kids will be discovering rock music...
They make some ridiculously catchy stuff too, even during their earlier/heavier days. Great songwriters and riff-makers. Such a fun live show too
There is a cognitive dissonance between their look and sound. They are most certainly a hard rock/occasional metal band (and that's how I kind of like it). Considering what passes for metal for the gate keepers these days.... Iron Maiden, AC/DC and even Motorhead don't count as metal. So meh to the gatekeepers.
@@jon-paulfilkins7820 well to be fair - nobody would or should ever refer to ac/dc as metal
@@MichaelJoshuaWilliams True, they are really just a hard rocking Aussie pub band.
NOOOO!!! They've come for him!! I knew this day would come but not now.
the worst part are the kiddires going around spamming everywhere that I am so special because I know te leeriks.
Even if we didn't know the band, we went to the show because "hey, it's a show"
Exactly - you would go to literally any hardcore show just because it was a hardcore show
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA It was the best, and it was even better if you happened to have a tape or 2 to trade to people.
I love how he is covering Ghost more and more now.
I have no idea what genre Ghost are, but they are catchy as hell!
He knew who ghost was and said they’re boring to him but he understands their appeal.
Ghost posted on their story the other day using the tiktok version of the song So I'm pretty sure they are Fully Embracing it which is brilliant!!
As a huge fan of Ghost, I kinda disappointed because Normies/Posers know this song from Tik Tok trend.
People who gatekeep are so miserable and annoying
"I didn't mean to like that".
Sure Finn, sure.
Lmfao I didn’t know they had a single called “Seven Inches of Satanic Panic” I love that
They don’t. It’s a two track EP containing ‘Mary on a Cross’ and ‘Kiss the Go-goat.’
@@DadCore that’s basically a single
@@luistijerina two is not one.
@@DadCore singles used to have an A-side and a B-side or a double A-side, so yeah it would qualify as a single
@@John_Souls a single can refer to either a single song, or a record release that has one song on the front and one on the back. So this does fit the second definition
Didn't know much of Volbeats music until I saw them with Ghost. Now I absolutely love Volbeat
Just goes to show TikTok is where the viral trends start and Twitter is where the gatekeepers shit on them.
Ghost deserves all the attention it can get. They are one of the best bands in the last 20 years
More like 40 years
Same thing happened to Caravan Palace with Wonderland. I'm glad more people got into them, they need all the recognition they can get because they are fantastic.
Agreed. Electro swing as a genre in general needs to get more recognition
If someone listens to one song and then leaves the show… more space for me 😂
It’s like gatekeeping AC/DC or the Foo Fighters.
Kudos to those of you who have NEVER had TikTok...me either. Just say no.
I watch it but don't post my own videos
It comes a time when you´re just too old to get the next trendy platform.. got u
If i pick up my "music career endeavours" i would probably have to but till then.. never in a million years
As a cultured fellow, 1 chef comes with 1 ladle.
I am a diehard Ghost fan and i love that this is bringing in new fans to Ghost's music. EVERYONE IS WELCOME
Can you imagine a band you like being successful and you're actually happy for them? Whaaaaaat?
You can even be a fan without knowing their songs but seeing them live. I saw Killing Joke open for Tool and they were very good
I love how he says o didn’t mean to like that like five times
The Plot in You also had a song called ‘feel nothing’ go viral on TikTok. It boosted their Spotify plays by a lot
I don't understand how ghost is considered to be metal
Don’t be that guy.
Just my opinion man don't care if you like it
@@johnporch8392 it’s also the opinion of literally every other comment on anything related to Ghost…
Ghost plays music that sits well alongside plenty of early wave metal. I suppose “British Steel” by Judas Priest isn’t metal either is it?
No I owe a copy of British steel
Own not owe
The real irony is that Stranger Things wasn't made for millennials and zoomers, it was made for gen x people like me for the nostalgia factor. The fact that millennials and zoomers are so obsessed with it just shows how badly todays music and teen culture sucks.
Tik Tok can have them...perfect match.
Ghost is the shit I don't care about tiktok but if it boosts Ghost popularity, go for it
imo mary on a cross is a bad song but if it introduces ghost and rock and metal to a bigger audience ill go for it
@@tysonwastaken its not a bad song to me
@@DoorknobTheOgryn its too poppy for me
Next: people gatekeeping Five Finger Death Punch or Nickelback?
Basically it's like a chain . People lessening The music on a famous show or on TikTok and after that they go to Spotify to her the music of the band . And that Creta a good feed back on Rock . I don't use TikTok but i support . Because it's a channel for people to now rock
"I didn't mean to like that, dammit."
Sure..............😆😆😆
My problem is that king for a day is not their best song
@@DevouredZombie I mean it’s a good iconic one tho
Been a fan since the EP before they formed PTV and I will always love seeing them get any sort of trending. Easily one of the better pop punk bands. Just sad Mike isn't in the next album..whenever that is haha.
@@DevouredZombie master of puppets isn’t metallica’s best either, that’s just how it always goes, king for a day is still a great song
Personally I love Ghost. People are so fickle and stupid when it comes to bands.
Been a fan since 2016. I am super happy people are finding a band that has been a big part of my life. Welcome to all the new fans and hope you stay! We are a chaotic but fun bunch of fans!
Top content. Couldn't agree more. Also need to thank you as your content recently led me to Becoming the Knight and his band Crusade. Real nice find.
Mary On A Cross is actually 3rd now on the Viral 50 USA & 32nd on Top 50 USA.
Yes, Finn you most certainly did mean to like that.
This songs been out for like 2 years I think, never heard of it until recently, and I found it because it blew up out of nowhere
Im hoping new fans that are seeing Ghost on their upcoming tour, also get into Mastodon, who are opening for them.
I will forever worship TikTok and Stranger Things for making me aware of Ghost's existence. I love the entirety of their catalogue, and very much enjoy Repugnant and Subvision. And I really like Persner's songwriting, it's very interesting and distintive even If I don't love every MCC song.
The chat on this one is top tier.. a lot of Jimmies were rustled
Edit: also thanks for the influx of new fans because I doubled my money on my sold out ghost tickets.
I randomly discovered Ghost from researching new bands to listen to. I just hate people wearing shirts of bands that they never listen to.
Cheers
'im so mad they found this song on tik tok, posers"
me, an intellectual.
"Dude, ghost is trash" LMAO
Lol
The Kate Bush song was because of Stranger Things season 4. The others I'm not positive.
im a really big fan of ghost i love them ive been to their concerts and i have merch and im happy for them for all this love and attention but people who are but the people are making fun of some of the members im really happy but i understand gatekeeping bc some people make the fandom weird i just hope the fandom stays okay and goor tho
Did someone say "Big Tiddy Goth Girl"?
I was initially disappointed when I went to a Korn and Rob Zombie show and Korn ended up being the headliner. Knew maybe two songs. After that show, I became a true Korn fan. Like you said, everyone was an amateur at one point.
I want to gatekeep gatekeepers… like, they’re only gatekeeping because it’s mainstream. I’ve been gatekeeping since wayyyy before it was cool.
So that's why I saw Ghost was trending in Spotify
I bought tickets to see loads of bands having only heard one or two songs. Back when you would have to leave an mp3 downloading overnight, we would go to the rock clubs, hear a great tune and go see bands based on that.
The Simp monologue was so Morty!
