that's exactly the issue. Like there is so much wrong with the actions of metallica members and it shouldn't be brushed aside but most of it was ages ago which hopefully gave them time to learn their lessons and you could cancel anybody's favourite artists. Give me anyone and I could go on twitter and get them cancelled because everyone has dirt on them. Its how you change and learn from those mistakes that matters.
That's the problem with cancel culture, it isn't there to make the world more "woke" its just there for those looking for blood. If you actually want to have a proper impact on peoples actions and attitudes, call them out for stuff they did in the now.
Also its ironic Axl Rose was used as a source for proving the racism vs Ice Tea when Axl Rose himself was a massive bigot.

This is equivalent to calling out you're sibling who used to be an addict or in a gang or something 20+ years ago when now they're a good person trying to raise a family. Let people grow, let people live and learn. Nothing wrong with bringing up the past in certain contexts, but shaming people that have clearly grown from their past is unnecessary.

I remember a few years back I watched the CW show The Flash and at one point some 10 year old tweets surfaced from one of the actors where he made some tasteless edgy "racist/sexist" jokes. The NEXT DAY he was fired and the showrunner and the stars of the show came out and talked about how ashamed they were to have ever worked with him. And as far as I know he's to this day never worked as an actor again. His entire career gone in an instant because he made "offensive jokes" when he was younger. Jokes that were by the standards of the time no big deal. They ruined the man's life over petty bullshit and they cheered about it. That's just the world we live in now. And it's only going to get worse.

Metallica fan here to debunk some of the stuff:
-The Nazi salute that Hetfield and Ulrich did was very very obviously a joke, hence the Hitler stache.
-The Iron cross was not just a Nazi symbol as you pointed out, but also used by Prussian warriors before the Nazis. Outlaw bikers used the cross for shock value/rebellion, without actually standing for Nazis. James was a huge bike/car fan as one of his signature guitars sports a truck design and he has a well known hobby of old cars/bikes. Not only that, but Lemmy (Motorhead), one of his biggest musical inspirations, collected war memorabilia, including Nazi items such as iron crosses (Lemmy was not a racist, he just liked war history). James probably got the idea for these from him. ESP literally made a signature guitar for James with the cross, I don't think they'd do this if it was intended to be a Nazi symbol.
-Hanging out with Kerry King does not mean you support a single part of the shirt he's wearing. Tacky photo yes, does it prove anything? No.
-The Jason Nazi salute was done because they wanted to troll both nazis and commies (This was during the ongoing Cold War). If anything, it was an anti nazi movement.
-I severely doubt James was a racist, one of their original members Lloyd, was african american and a dear friend of james. Why would he not want to share a stage with a a black guy if they literally had one in their band prior.. Also, are we seriously taking accusations from Axl.. AKA the guy who is known for using the n word multiple times both in interviews and songs, and acting racist?!
-The asian thing was something dumb that I'm sure a lot of us have done as kids back in the early 2000s. I've done it myself as well. James was most likely misinformed and that was honestly just socially acceptable at the time.
-Not caring who someone votes for is perfectly fine and actually a better outlook on things. Why is these even one of her points. My friends vote for trump, that does not change a single view of mine on them.
-Like Finn said, where are your donations? I didn't donate either, that says literally nothing about my qualities or character.
-The drug and suicide stuff was not cool, but then again it was a seriously different time. Kurt would have laughed at that joke honestly and the whole band are now friends with members of AIC. They've made the effort to change, let it go. (Kurt also loved metallica and kirk was friends with him if i recall). Also, it didn't happen days after Cobain's death. It happened almost 2 months after.
-They said a lot of dumb stuff was that socially acceptable back then and they've changed for the better. Why does this kind of cancelling behavior even exist anymore. It's a sad cry for attention and clout. The points you made at the end were all really true.

11:27 - as a fan of both bands, I remember seeing this footage more than 10 years ago. For those that don’t know, AIC was supposed to open on this tour for Metallica, and days before the tour kicked off, AIC backed out citing “differences”. In the moment, this was an angry, likely drunk James communicating why AIC wasn’t on the tour, and doing so in a very inconsiderate way. AIC ended up being replaced by Candlebox.
Also, consider that James was friends with Jerry Cantrell (AIC guitarist/vocalist), and probably didn’t feel very sympathetic towards Layne since even Jerry was pissed about his band backing out of the tour. You can find footage online they documents the complexity AIC felt during this time, when they had a close friend that they cared for, that was struggling with addiction, and the fact that hey had to cancel yet another tour as they are trying to establish the band.
James was disrespectful in this footage towards Layne, but it was likely James expressing his frustration outwardly, and feeling justified since Layne’s closest friends were feeling the same way.

I really relate to your comment on how if we keep cancelling/bullying people for shit they did 30-40 years ago, people then have no incentive to change. Well done! Rather than "cancelling" particular individuals (James and Lars in this instance, but also in general) a much more interesting and productive discussion could be around culture itself. American culture in the 80-00's was just less informed and more ignorant regarding the experience of marginalized groups (that is, after all, a function of their marginalization). And in terms of thrash metal culture, what is interesting to understand is how so many found themselves drawn to the music and culture, on the one hand, because of feeling out of place yet, on the other hand, the "edginess" in the music sometimes, perhaps often, was expressed in behaviors that we can look back at through our 2022 hindsight as problematic while also remembering that it was "normal" behavior for that time and place (not an excuse for it but, rather, the necessary context to make sense of it). The question is, how do we move forward as a culture. I think communication and openness, something Metallica has to a large degree reckoned with, is key. We all make mistakes and say or do things that we may look back at and cringe - and we can all grow and learn from our past.

Considering Metallica has been one of my favorite bands for almost 20 years my opinion is going to be biased, but it seems pretty unfair to dig up all of this stuff from more than 20 years ago and judge it by the standards of today. Yeah most of this stuff never should have been acceptable in the first place but the reality is that it was much more acceptable back then, especially when you're a young successful rockstar trying to be edgy and cool. Even back when I was a teenager in the mid 2000s we made racist and offensive jokes all the time because we thought it was funny and we were trying to be edgy. Most of us weren't legitimately racist, we just thought it was funny to try get a reaction out of people. We've also grown up since and realized that shit wasn't cool and how much of a problem it can be.

They are trying to turn our whole way of life based on todays standards. We need to do away with the constitution because it was written by slave owners. They don't care how progressive the constitution truly was. And even a black man in the day that was a former slave talked about how great the constitution was because the words if actually adhered to are truly progressive.

I was at the Keene, NH show. Third show in three nights. The Cobain joke came at an odd time after Jason Newsted lost feeling in his arms and thought he was dying. Turned out to be a panic attack. They played two songs without bass (no, not strictly Justice stuff). He told the Cobain joke and even at the time, it felt too soon but at the same time they were filling time. They didn't know what was happening with their bass player.
Jason came back out and sang without playing bass .
At that time, James was a known alcoholic. I'm not making excuses by any means, but in the moment and drunk, we all say shit.

The funny thing about cancel culture is the people doing the canceling don’t seem to realize that they’re turn will eventually come. No one is perfect. Everyone has done something at one time or another that if not now, it can in the future become problematic. Things change. What’s ok today (or not so ok) can be detrimental later on. People change and grow up. When I hear about this kind of stuff I don’t think twice about it. I look at how the individuals are now.

She can't tie it to current-year identity-politics easily so no, not surprising. Cobains suicide can at least be connected to mental health issues.
Frankly I think James and Lars come off as pscyhopathic narcisssistcs (past and present) and the Kurt Cobain joke is just in line with that. With that said, I don't think extreme edgelord humor is morally wrong.
Obviously people should not go out of their way to directly be mean to someone (unless they started shit), if you're talking to a gay person then don't start making a bunch of gay jokes etc. But as for people just having and expressiing a sense of humor in general though, anything can be offensive to anyone. If jokes in themselves are ''wrong'' based on offense and groups being ''targets'', then there'd be no humor. Everyone's got an offensive humor to someone elses standard.
Also people don't owe it to adapt to your (''you'' in general not ''you'' specfically UWU) subjective feeling of ''too offensive'' humor, that's a level of social control you don't deserve,
and it opens up for a manipulative guilt-tripping culture where you de facto can control others by being ''offended''.

Awesome video Finn. I like that you didn’t just dismiss everything she brought up or go down the typical knee-jerk response route of calling her a pansy or snowflake or something. You acknowledged that a lot of what she brought up was bad, while still making a very important distinction between cringy edgelords who did and said stupid things back in the day with people who are genuinely problematic and remorseless and who need to be taken down. I also like how you pointed out that by treating every sin as an unforgivable offense, we’re making it harder, not easier, to hold actually dangerous people to account. It’s the boy who cried wolf.
I think society needs to balance its ability to eject people from the public’s good graces, with both nuance (meaning let’s take the passage of time into account and not just assume that nobody ever grows up) and just as importantly, a forgiveness mechanism. There needs to be a way back into the public’s favor and there isn’t one. I lean pretty left politically but one thing I absolutely despise is people’s tendency (especially on my side of the aisle but not exclusively) to demand an apology and then automatically say “they’re not sorry, they’re just sorry they got caught!” Well that’s bullshit. Sometimes people are just sorry they got caught, but sometimes they actually did learn their lesson, feel bad and want to make it right. People definitely feel remorse, grow, change. It’s so scary and unhealthy to dismiss that and it begs the question, why demand an apology at all if you never had any intention of accepting it? We all need forgiveness and nobody is perfect. Some of the people who deserve forgiveness the least are the ones who refuse to forgive other people.

    • @HessianHunter
      @HessianHunter Рік тому

@@JustTheTip556 That's some creative etymology but I don't think it's accurate. "Orient" in Latin means "to rise" and is associated with the Sun and therefore the direction of East and therefore the continent of Asia from a European perspective. So "the Orient" is just a fancy way of saying "the East".
It's not particularly relevant though because etymology isn't always a good way to determine if terms are fairly considered offensive or not. Consider the romance language root word for "black" and the various names for dark skinned people that have been created from it. There's nothing wrong with the Spanish word written in a black Crayon but there sure is something wrong with another word with common etymology thanks to its historical context. There are many other examples of offensive words having etymologies from banal sources. Insults are context-dependent, after all. It's quite a different thing to call someone "Pakistani" than to call them "a Paki". I could go on but hopefully you get my point.

This one had me thinking... when people try to cancel things I don't like, I'm generally okay. I can't think of any specific examples since I don't let it take up much time in my head, but there have been times when I thought yeah, they deserve it. But now, something I like, I enjoy Metallica, I feel like this person needs to shut up. And she does. But what she has done, has made me rethink past times where I would have supported someone being cancelled when I didn't like them to begin with. I understand when companies drop someone because of the possible bad PR when they do something stupid, makes sense when if affects their bottom line, but trying to organize people to make it happen is horrible. ESPECIALLY when the problem you have if something someone did decades ago. Like Finn said, you need to let people change. Some of these examples of what Metallica said are horrible (I was mostly bothered by the Kurt Cobain one, that a jerk thing so say Hetfield but I still like you), but who has not said something horrible and immature at some point? The people I like the most are actually people who have some horrible things but have admitted it, made changes and have become a better person. I love a good redemption arc, in real life or fiction.
