Strong disagree on Spoonman. They were out of the box with this song. They used a guy who was talented with an unorthodox instrument and made it sound good. It's a classic. People who hear this song immediately recognize this song. I know they're not playing the usual rock instruments but this was an awesome song that definitely STILL holds up. I admit not my favorite song but I think it holds up.

Black no.1 is literally a color type of hair dye lol....and the name of an awesome damn song.
For my money, Kim Thayil wrote the best "Seattle" riffs. I love all the other guys - Osbourne, Cantrell, Cobain, Tad, etc. - but Thayil's riffs are such a great blend of punk, metal, psychedelia and classic rock. It made me want a Guild S-100 when I was a kid.
Hard disagree on Spoonman. Good riffs, good vocals, high energy, and you might think it is a novelty but I think having the Spoonman on the track is awesome. It is unique and it is amazing how this dude plays the spoons. On a technical level, the main riff is in 7/4 time signature, which is also unusual for a lot of music period, let alone 90s or Grunge. And the drums are great, and the breakdown while not overly complicated is super tasteful.
EDIT: I didn't even talk about the creative production with the left/right channel pans on this song!

I think Superunknown is the best produced album ever. Michael Beinhorn did an excellent job producing and helping Cornell feel more comfortable writing songs that were different from what they were known for. Also, Brendan O'Brien (the one who mixed the album) is incredible, he's a big reason 90s rock got away from the super reverb sound of the 80s in favor of a more natural, stripped down sound. Also it was 1994, pre pro-tools era, so it was all done on tape which gives the music kind of a warm, more authentic vibe.

Pete Steele was an excellent and highly underrated songwriter. Many only remember his larger-than-life image, but his music - especially the mid to later stuff - was very thoughtfully arranged and cleverly composed. Really sad he's not among us anymore.

Type O was one of my favorite bands as a kid and Black No.1 is still one of my favorite songs. It never gets old to me, even the long version. It's sad Peter has been gone for so many years.
It’s one my least favorites from them, but if anyone enjoys only that song, or the song is an entry point into the catalog for people, I’m all for it

I saw Type O Negative open for Pantera on the Far Beyond Driven tour. The audience threw produce at them. The stage looked like a salad bar. Phil came out and sang Kill All the White People during Type O's set, then they covered Raining Blood and Ministry's Thieves together. Then, during Pantera's set, Pete Steele walked out on stage with a push broom and swept up all the produce that had been thrown at them while Pantera was absolutely destroying during their set. Pretty memorable show. Pantera closed with Planet Caravan.

Spoonman is a great song on a damn perfect album.
Chris Cornell is my favourite singer of all time. Spoonman isn't my favourite Soundgarden song, but it's far from a bad song. The vocals are great, the riffs are great, the song is great. I honestly thought the lyrics were about heroin and, knowing now what they're actually about, they are pretty weird, but the vocals and the riffs make up for that.
Most of the time you make me realize some of the songs I liked are really not that great and I agree, but not today, Finn McKenty!
Also, Regulate is the shit. A former friend of mine got me into a lot of old school rap and hip-hop that I had never heard before, and this was one of the big ones for him.
The rest of those pretty much suck, other than White Zombie. 😂 I'm a pretty big fan of "gothic" music, but can't say I've ever been a huge Type O Negative fan (also, not a fan of a lot of older goth music), though I do think Peter Steele was pretty cool.
My cultural background involves spoon playing, so as a kid I thought it was really cool for there to be a grunge song that I can culturally relate to.

Spoonman is unlike Soundgarden?
It has the trademark Soundgarden odd time signatures. Most nu-grunge/post-grunge bands couldn't play that well.

@@thegreatergood8081 nah that would be post grunge rather than nu. I suggested incubus because there are elements of hip hop funk and grunge. The nu metal scene was defined by bands like limp bizkit, korn or deftones. All of which incorporated elements of hip hop into new school metal.

Yeah…Spoonman sounds a little like Soundgarden doing Soundgarden, and a song about a guy who plays the spoons is very Lollapalooza side show attraction, but it’s got one of the best grunge riffs of all time!

Saw Soundgarden in 94 and they had the spoon man on tour with them.
Peter Steele is legit one of the most influential people in Metal. Bloody Kisses put Roadrunner Records on the map. Thanks to that popularity, bands like Sepultura, Machine Head, Life Of Agony (produced by Type O's Keyboard playerJosh Silver) and Fear Factory were able to have a lot of succes. Roadrunner had absolutley zero say or input on the rest of Type O's albums. Type O called all the shots on songwriting, choice of Studio (Systems Two in Brooklyn) other musicians on their records (Peter Font and Val Ium from Pist-On, Mina from Life Of Agony, Paul Bento on Sitar etc). Hell, Josh even mixed October Rust over a damn phone while the band toured with Ozzy. They told Roadrunner how things would be and Roadrunner had no choice but to go along with it.
The next wave of Roadrunner bands were HUGE. Slipknot and Nickelback wound up on Roadrunner. Isn't that nuts?? There's a direct thread from Peter Steele to some of the biggest selling Rock/Metal bands of the modrn era.
Peter gave Biohazard their name and that iconic logo, Crowbar was a direct response to Peter's super low B tuning. Kirk is rocking a Type O shirt in the Existence Is Punishment video. Hell, Billie f*cking Eilish wears Type O shirts. It's unreal how Type O Negative continues to gain momentum despite Peter being gone.
Finn, if you ever do a Type O video I would love to help you write it. I know so many random facts about that band and I would love for your audience to know more about their legacy.

Man the 90s were the decade to be young and alive :) Every year was kinda different, the digital/technological evolution was at mad pace back then. Just compare what TV shows looked like in 1991 and compare them to 95 and then 99. Massive. Now compare the same to 2010-2019 - the decade of social media taking over life...
I truly believe that 90's was most interesting decade, extremely hard to categorize. When you think of "sound of 80's" or "sound of 70's", it is easy to describe that sound, because there were genres that dominated those eras. In 90's you had grunge, new jack swing, trip hop, nu metal, eurodance, groove metal, rap in it's highest peak. Of course some of those bands and their artistic choices were bad and corny as fck, but still I will take those over generic, safe and PC-oriented music of nowadays. In Poland we have saying "kto nie ryzykuje ten nie pije szampana" (those who won't take a risk will not drink champaign) and I think it's accurate also in terms of music. You know, even David Bowie and The Beatles had bad albums.
Damn right, millennials want safe pop shit wolves in sheep's rock clothing. Maroon 5, MGK, AJR, Jonas, Coldplay post Viva... Rock is supposed to be dangerous sounding. It's not for Disney kids or your grandma, wimps!

The G Funk Era is an absolute classic hip hop album that doesn’t get mentioned enough amongst the 90s greats.
Mostly because All Eyez On Me, Ready to Die, Illmatic, Doggystyle, Dogg Food, Enter the 36 Chambers, The Infamous, The Chronic, Me Against the World, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Makaveli, all came out within 2 years of it.
But still a great album. Perfect G Funk
Really enjoy your videos Finn! You are correct about early Type O albums, they were in fact left over Carnivore songs. Bloody Kisses is the first official Type O album as those were all new songs written by Pete post-Carnivore. Most songs written by Peter Steele were tongue in cheek as you said. He typically wrote satirical material that was purposely meant to confuse critics into thinking it was intended seriously. Where you are incorrect is that Peter did not think his fans were losers. He joked about this in his Peter-style but he was always, always very grateful for his fans and though he teased them as well, he was never anything but humble and gracious for their support. It's well known that he hated touring but continued to do so even after it had become extremely detrimental to his mental and physical health because of his commitment to his fans and not wanting to let them down. I agree that Black No. 1 holds up BUT it is the least of Peter's contribution to the world as his later song-writing was much more a testament to the kind of gut-wrenching, soul-searching music he was capable of writing so well. It is this writing that makes Type O Negative an eternal 'Holds Up' band. For people who don't know the band, please don't stop at Black No. 1 as the summation of what they are about. Delve deep into October Rust, World Coming Down, Life is Killing Me and Dead Again to make your own judgment. Also, I have never been a goth girl, nor have I ever had chubby arms. 🤘💚

They’re my favorite band not just because they’re incredible musicians but Pete’s sense of humor as well. Sure the whole Slow Deep and Hard album would get them cancelled if released today but if it weren’t for “Der Untermensch” we wouldn’t have gotten their response to the media’s racism accusations with “Kill All The White People” and my favorite track of their’s “We Hate Everyone.” If it weren’t for Pete’s cat’s untimely death we wouldn’t have gotten the title track to Bloody Kisses. If it weren’t for Pete not knowing the kind of customer base that was subscribed to Playgirl we wouldn’t have gotten “I Like Goils.” Sure some of the things he said if taken out of context would be considered offensive but if you’re a fan you’re in on the joke just like the lyrics to “Black No. 1” and you know there’s a lot more to Mr. Steele starting with the fact he’s a far more sensitive soul than let’s on. Finn brings up the TON stans which I find interesting because it seems the band maybe more respected and influential than they ever were. And yes I did just run off a bunch facts like a Tool fan getting a boner over their music but even though I think Type O can hardly do any wrong I try to keep the fanboy stuff to other consenting Type O fans.
@@freeparking301 I consent to any and all fan boys/girls out there for our beloved Type O. Der Untermensch was written by a much different Peter than the one we lost in 2010. It's because of that song I've come across some truly disgusting white supremacist threads on Reddit that claim Peter was one of them. They could not be more wrong. I couldn't agree more that Pete was an extremely sensitive person and I think he likely used humor, dark wit and sarcasm to mask that sensitivity. It bugs me when ppl automatically say "Black No 1" when Type O is mentioned when that song is very, very far from the true nature and depth of Peter's incredible songwriting that came in later years. Losing Peter at 48 will always be at the top of my list for musician tragedies. He should have had so many more years ahead of him of writing the music he loved as a healthy and well man who finally kicked his demons to the curb. The fact that he died right after he got sober, from an illness nobody typically dies from, is heartbreaking for many of us. Yes he lives on in his music, but there should have been more and that's his and our biggest tragedy.

I always felt as great as they were they didn’t even truly peak, which is saying something considering I feel they never wrote a bad song and you can hear on Dead Again that all of the tricks of the trade they learned over the years were leading into possibly another era of huge success like in the mid 90s. Certainly seeing how many bands list them as an influence these days is just further evidence of that. I doubt there will ever be a frontman that’ll ever come close to what we had with Pete. And as for those posting on Reddit thinking he’s a white supremacist, it’s pretty obvious he isn’t considering if someone truly was that way they wouldn’t have the Superjew known as Josh on keyboards in their band. I’m surprised they’re not complaining about Rasputin being on the cover of Dead Again and calling him a commie. And if you want another weird accusation I’ve seen how about people thinking he would be an anti-vaxxer because of the lyrics to the title track of “Life is Killing Me.” People can try to put Pete inside their own little boxes but he’s just too big to fit.
Type O is still great. I'm usually not heavily affected when famous people die off, but I legitimately cried when his death was announced. Him and Dave brockie are responsible for my sense of humor, I guess it makes sense why nobody else finds me funny aside from my close friends

Spoon man is a great track, not the top tier of Soundgarden but, I always loved it, I love how he goes into his Robert Plant style and then kind of responds to himself and his downplayed grunge style voice I like that format in the verses…Still extremely listenable today, but I listen to a ton of shit that people probably would say didn’t age well, as well as current stuff…. for me if it takes me back to a good feeling, it aged well for me

It’s still on rotation here in Indiana, so I have to believe it’s across the board.

Thunderkiss 65 totally holds up, Starface is probably the best song. Pete Steele was kind of a crazy dude. I hungout with him a couple times back in 2002 at this club in Brooklyn. We went to a diner once and he was blackout drunk and had a hello kitty wallet with $1 in it.

Yeah, they became pretty generic later in their careers, but it feels weird listing to someone shit on Aerosmith. They were SO influential. Critical band in the development of hard rock.

I'm not a fan of Aerosmith, but I know why they got big. They were sort of meant to be an American challenge to the reigning British bands in the 70's. They were good at what they did, and Sweet Emotion will always be a great guitar riff.

About Type O and "It must be at least somewhat tongue-in-cheek": I thought Pete went to quite lengths to make it really obvious. The song title is a hair dye product and a reference to a childrens book in brackets, it breaks into the Addams Family theme in the middle of the song, it has "a date with Nosferatu", "Lilly Munster has got nothing on you" and "Boo bitch craft" in the lyrics, and the whole chorus is about not being able to go out while your non-Goth hair roots are showing. Damn I love this band.
The other band mates had said over the years that Pete wrote that type of music to get “a certain type of girl.” He executed it perfectly while trolling them at the same time. “Be My Druidess” is so over the top I don’t know if It started as a serious attempt at song writing and got out of hand but by the time you get to “I’ll do anything to make you cum” you figure it’s got to be a joke and yet there were women out there that heard that and sought Pete’s “special talents.” I feel that the type of fan (groupie) “Black No.1” brought to the backstage area had a huge influence on the creation of October Rust.

Great content as always. In 1993 I was in 3rd grade, and I decided I needed to start listening to music and have a favorite band. My mom and sister both had extensive music collections, so I felt I needed to start curating mine. My reference point was my favorite movie at the time Wayne's World 2, featuring Aerosmith. So they became my favorite band in the midst of the Get a Grip album cycle. I was 9 years old jamming to "Amazing" Eat the Rich" on my walkman. Thank you for letting me vent.

We had Warren G´s song Rregulate in PE station training in elementary school 94-96.
The most weird part is that it had to be on some kind of cd or casette made for this specific purpouse since every cut of from the song marked the ending of the intervall at that station. I remember it cutting out at the "backup backup" part.
We also had Rap das Armas on our Hits for Kids cds. Guess no one here gives or gave a damn what songs are really about.

I saw them there, too. Peter Steele was hilarious because he kept remarking on how hot it was in there. After they played "Too Late: Frozen", he wiped the sweat off his head and said, "frozen, my ass!"

The beat sample for Regulate is “I keep Forgetting” by Michael McDonald in 1982.
And it’s one of the best samples of all time. Hell the original song is great with that awesome bass line which was a perfect candidate to get G-funkified.

yeah spoonman is a weird track, soundgarden was always throwing weird gimick shit on their records (like the saxophone songs on badmotorfinger, that banjo song on down on the upside, big dumb sex etc) one of the lesser songs on a masterpiece album (ditto fresh tendrils)
And YES i did know someone who 'played' the spoons in a folk punk band and he did nerd out about going to thrift stores to get the best sounding spoons lol
But is Spoonman a bad song? No, it’s a kickass song, look up Rick Beato’s review of the song

I don't know man, considering how absolutely jaded and prone to drugs / depression Seattle grunge musicians were, I consider Spoonman a small win for man. Also, that Michael McDonald beat on that Warren G track 👌🔥

I went to Catholic school on Long Island (back in the late 90s/early 2ks) and kids used to “shoot dice” in the courtyard. Everything about it was RIDICULOUS. Like a bunch of 15 year old kids with hundred dollar bills getting in trouble for street gambling 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

Surprised on your take on Spoonman. I love that song. And I am usually pretty snobby when it comes to music. One of the songs I go to when I tell someone that lyrics are overrated. That and any songs without vocals (or with vocals but no actual words)
Aerosmith basically made the same song into three 90s hits: Crazy, Crying and Amazing are the same two syllable hook done three times.
I do like Dream On, which I actually heard after at least after this one, and the vocals and song style were so unlike this sound I couldn't believe it was the same band and same singer as 90s Aerosmith.
But they definitely aren't the same song, so much differences
@@DaP84 the hook for all three songs is a similar two syllable elongated hanging on that title. "Cuz I'm crazy" "it's amazing" "I'm crying". Dunno what to say if you can't hear the similarities.
@@AdanALW Rhythm/cadence isn't what makes songs the same though. It's the least specific element. Million songs share same basic rhythms/cadences. So much other elements making these songs different. Yeah, they share some similar aspects, but they are def different (melodies, timbres, intrumentations, arangements etc). It's a great trilogy!

In regards to "shooting dice" I did learn how to play once (or a variation of it). There is more to the game than just rolling the highest number, but I completely forget those rules.
I do remember learning in some random person's garage with a friend of a friend, and even with money in my pocket "shooting dice" made me feel the poorest I've ever been.

I'd take spoonman over any song I've heard in the last decade...I would probably stretch that to 2 decades, but just to be safe I'll say one...typical soundgarden riffs with cornells vocals....it could be about a song about strawberry shortcake and it would still be good...soundgarden was grunge before grunge was a thing..I never liked the spoon deal, but I still dig the song itself

From what I understand, Slow, Deep, and Hard basically recycled a lot of Carnivore's songs when Peter went from Carnivore to TON. Pete Steele was definitely making fun of his fans with Black No. 1. Very tongue and cheek, lol!
'Spoonman' was at least the perfect opening song back in 1996 when they were always mixed badly, but very, VERY loud, with Chris usually being drunk and Shepherd kicking photographers.
White Zombie and Type O Negative still hold up massively for me. I always associate WZ and Thunder Kiss '65 as being the opening song for ECW's pro wrestling TV show in the mid 90's.

Speaking of shooting dice, this was a thing in my country too (in Eastern Europe) and people would actually get into fights and such over it in the 90s. The immediate post-dictatorship era was wild.

Sound Garden have some of their earliest albums like Louder than Love and songs like Loud Love n Get on the Snake are really spectacular especially the entire bands talent mixed to produce an absolute monster of a song with each member's great talent n performance on Loud love is so ahead of anything from the same time in music. Chris' vocal line fading from Kim's guitar note n Chris hits the highest note Kim plays which at the time was almost unheard of back then.

Warren G “Regulate… G Funk Era” was the first CD I ever bought with my own money, at around 11 years old… my mum went into the store to listen to it in one of the little booths before purchasing to make sure it wasn’t too rough or rude, I still remember her coming out of the store like “you HAVE to buy that”
