It’s incredible that Corky is still alive and relatively healthy for an orca in captivity. I just watched a news piece from 30 years ago about a group working to get her released back to the wild. Some were losing hope because of her age. Ironic that they thought she would be released and that Keiko would spend the rest of his life in captivity.
it did end 2 years ago, the show called "One Ocean" now its more of a live documentary type show called "Orca Encounter" ...... the company's San Diego park "will conduct an interim orca educational presentation in the pool that is also used for underwater viewing ... while we remove the existing theatrical moving screens and show set in the stadium and replace them with a natural backdrop that will reflect the natural world of the orca," SeaWorld San Diego spokesperson Dave Koontz told the media.SeaWorld's orca shows have been seen by more than 400 million people over the previous decades. But the company's next phase will transition from applause-getting tricks to "new, inspiring, natural orca encounters" emphasizing "orca enrichment, exercise, and overall health"-while its remaining captive whales remain alive.
How are they not embarrassed to show their dorsal fins looking like that, as if them being in captivity is not the obvious reason for them looking like that
How would you explain corky, even Lolita and kiska who has been in captivity longer than others, that’s around 50 or over, first thing you guys check out as an indicator of happiness is the dorsal fin, these orcas have straight dorsal fins
How special. Its banned in the US as well. Has been for a while now, though Canada likely did it sooner. The US may have had more orcas in general as well. Any you see in shows like this are just the last few.
Ultimately, what's going on is the collagen in the dorsal fin is breaking down. One reason this may happen is from temperature. Warmer temperatures can disrupt collagen's structure and rigidity. Which may explain why more captive whales have curved fins. In captivity, whales breach the surface more often, exposing their fins to the warmer air. It doesn't take long for this process to happen. One group developed curved fins after a month in captivity. But once the group was released back to the wild the fins reverted to normal.
@@s.qwiggens4825 It makes me mad when people say that too. Their fin isn't like a dogs tail, they can't change the position of the fin for crying out loud. I wonder sometimes where peoples brains are.
this is so sad. these animals can’t simply be freed into the ocean for obvious reasons. the last generation of these whales have to spend the rest of their lives in this depressing state. SeaWorld does a lot to help conserve wildlife but captivating these intelligent and social creatures is almost morbid.
Sad part is that they can't set them free, these whales have no idea how to be whales. Since they were taken away from there family at such a young age, they dont know anything. And for people who think that they should be set feet they should really take that to mind, they cant speak the language, the dont know how to hunt or dive. They also get medicated when they get sick, which makes them easily Susceptible to getting a cold, And dying.
I wouldn't say it's sad. As you said, they don't know how to be whales, so they have everything they need right there. They are pretty much treated like royalty. I don't see the sad part in that.
Tbh, i hate that those orcas live in captivity, they are so pretty! They could of been in the wild instead of being raised in captivity.. and now it’s too late
Here lemme explain. SeaWorld claims that this condition is common-however, in the wild, it rarely ever happens and is a sign of an injured or unhealthy orca. The phenomenon is more common in captivity, but people have also seen wild orcas with curved fins. So, the cause cannot be captivity alone. Ultimately, what's going on is the collagen in the dorsal fin is breaking down. ... In captivity, whales breach the surface more often, exposing their fins to the warmer air.
Wait a minute so if your basing it on fins, how about Corky? she’s been in captivity over 50 years, she’s actually on this video, she has a straight dorsal fin, so that means she’s happy…???
I understand that most of these orcas were born in captivity and most likely cannot be freed. They don’t have the endurance, the language skills and knowledge needed to survive. Many are not even pure eco-types so they wouldn’t be accepted into existing wild pods. Not to mention that most of their teeth are in need of daily care. BUT we know more about the need of orcas than we did when these tanks were built. Let’s make them bigger. The parking lots sure have some extra land. Let’s give them more to interact with, other than blank walls. Maybe the pools could have jets and currents. Just because an animal is surviving in its current environment, that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve more. Orca are too special to be treated like dancing poodles. We need to make the most of having them in captivity. Let scientists get in there and learn as much as we can, so hopefully we will use that knowledge to protect the wild orca. Make the sacrifice of these orca’s freedom garner more than dollars.
Tilikum16 Hey, there might some info you might be interested in. The orca project has gotten access to some of the training documents for each whale. It is a bit dated, from back when the trainers could still do water work. BUT it is cool to learn the likes/dislikes of the whales and what to watch techniques work best when interacting with them. I can forward you the link if you want.....
While extensive research and training would have to go into releasing orcas into the wild, sea sanctuaries are still a viable option for these animals. These sea sanctuaries would also provide ample space for these creatures, as well as a chance to slowly learn their natural tendencies in nature. While it's not the same as being released into the wild, it is still a vast step-up from what they have currently.
I'm so torn with Sea World. I'm 38 now and haven't been since I was about 12 or 13. But as a kid starting at about 7/8 yo, my mom used to take my cousin and I every summer to Sea World. We are close in age, both only children, and while we are unfortunately no longer in each others' lives, we grew up like brother & sister at the time. He had a very traumatic childhood and was raised by my grandmother that wouldn't have taken him anywhere had it not been for my mom and our Sumner and holiday visits with them. I also didn't get to do much the rest of the yr or have a lot of friends so I always looked forward to our Summer Sea World visits, especially since I've always loved animals. So my memories with Sea World as a kid are extremely cherished. Now as an adult I understand things for what they really are and it truly sucks. I haven't gone or supported them in years even though I have to admit I do miss it. But regardless of the things that have come to light about them, I can't say I regret going as a kid. It was a special time with my cousin, mom, and grandma...all that would be ruined later on on life, and I'm so glad I have those incredibly fond memories to look back on...
That is a great analogy for life/culture/society in general. It hurts to realise that it's all based on lies and slavery, but special moments are special forever
I’ve seen many comments talk about how ridiculous it is when people say that the bent dorsal fins are do to the whale being sad or sick bc whales in the wild can be sad and sick as well but theirs don’t bend. This is a very good point but I’d say that this would qualify as a different kind of sad or sick. It’s obvious that this only happens to captured whales living in captivity. The defeat, and helplessness that comes with that is a kind of sadness that wild don’t experience. Wild whales are at the top of the food chain and these whales have no control of their environment or food. I personally think there’s several factors that could play a part in causing the bend, the main one being not able to swim the distances, speed and depths as the wild ones are used to and the open ocean has many currents that can be quite strong so they need to be strong to match the environment. So basically I think it mostly comes down to the environmental differences. Sadness my not be the cause of the fin bending but I wouldn’t call anyones opinions ridiculous. Of course they’re sad, that’s not a crazy statement in my opinion. What I do think is crazy or ridiculous is the fact that people go around putting others down and thinking they’re smarter then others when in reality it’s ok if someone do know something plus anyone can be wrong. Hell even our scientists and doctors and specialist get things wrong. Being wrong is part of learning and growing. The dunning Kruger effect always amazes me. Maybe it’s the ego refusing to be wrong or people just wanting to feel superior to others but that’s the part that seems ridiculous to me. Sorry for the rant y’all have a great day
While they probably are sad and depressed....their fins collapsed likely due to them not having enough water and from gravity. They don't droop fins because of mood.
It’s mainly due to the fact they are fed thawed out fish and that they have don’t have a space big enough to swim freely in like they would in the sea has nothing do to with gravity or having enough water 😂😂 when the fin is dropped over in the sea it usually means they are injured or unhealthy which is very rare to sea 👍
FYI @happyhealerforpresident2029 The animals at every Seaworld are fed regularly and have the best quality of food, vitamins and have the best medical care. The fish that they are being given is a Treat not a meal. People that are concerned about the animals that are in captivity should really get a job at one of these parks to see how amazingly these beautiful creatures are treated. I used to feel the same way about the orcas being in captivity then I had a job at one of the parks and learned so much about how they are treated and cared for.
I’m sure you remember what happened to Willy aka Keiko everyone saw the film Free Willy and found out he wasn’t really free.. People were out raged and demanded he went back to Iceland where they captured him when he was two years old. Mind you He’s been with his trainers, Hollywood in motion pictures, he has been training for people for 25 years & he LOVED his fans. They had to raise $20 million to get him out of Mexico they had to build him a brand new tank in Oregon which was beautiful by the way I think he should have lived out his last year’s in Oregon.. Instead it took four or five years to get him healthy and ready for “the wild” You know how stressful it is to get an 8000 pound orca from the United States to ICELAND 😳 it cost soooo much money - finally Keiko was freed. He Immediately traveled 900 miles to Norway he was swimming up to boats Frantically looking for a human companionship, he was also showing up to people that had a oceanfront backyard and he would never leave. We didn’t ask HIM if this is what he wanted? The ocean is a scary place! He cried for his owners, his home he Eventually died four months later after being freed, he died of pneumonia and loneliness, starvation. If Lolita is freed The same thing will happen to her because she’s triple his age, I’m sure she loves her owners and trainers. Where she lives is unacceptable, people have swimming pools bigger than where she lives. Miami Seaquarium makes big bucks all year around instead of trying to free her they need to find better resources of getting her in a bigger tank. She also need shade from the Miami sun, I live in Miami and I’m gonna visit Lollita on Thursday. But People need to calm down about this whole freeing the orcas, its like kicking A five-year-old out the house and say get it together, you’ll figure it out!
That's what I'm saying how do you know the animals don't like what they're doing people need to chill. Meanwhile they're dressing up their dog and walking it in a stroller how does the dog feel about that???
For Lolita, there was a plan to have her in an enclosed netted area in a bay, I can't specifically remember where, but there were plans for her to be free but also not just left to her own devices after decaades of captivity. Keiko's treatment was really horrible, and I think people have learned from it.
This might be a stupid question but why does only 1 trainer put a metal gate up when giving commands etc? I'm guessing so that specific orca doesn't come up to far onto the platform?
it really is amazing how much damn money these stupid places make and they refuse to make large enclosures for these animals and treat them properly. there is a right way to keep these animals and the greedy bastards up top don't care. you cant set these animals free at this point.
normally i wouldn't allow your comment to go through(as it had LIGHT bad words compared to others that contain the F Word, UA-cam has a reminder that everyone respect each other in this community, but no one follows that) but i see this a moment i can tell you, SW wanted to(also you mentioned a fact that they couldn't free them at this point) starting with SWC - SeaWorld San Diego, but the government shut that idea down, "Blue World Project" look it up...
I was at Sea World San Antonio back in 2006. A male Orca slid up on the platform in the head & tail up position and refused to budge. They did a wonderful job of explaining that animas are going to do what they'll do when they want to do it. So, staff was just going to ignore him and let him get down in his own time. It was the best temper tantrum I've ever seen. 😆
The only thing that bugs me is that they call them whales when in fact, Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family and are in no way related to any species of whale
thats the only thing that bugs you ?!?! SeaWorld does call them what they are, and thats where i found out they are the largest dolphins....in fact @8:37 they say just that, and how many times did u hear Orca, even the title says Orca Encounter. not Killer Whale Encounter... oh by the way..... en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Killer_whale The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey.
It’s so crazy... how does each one know when to go when? Like they’re so synchronized it’s very cool I feel bad obviously wild animals shouldn’t be held in captivity unless in a rehab shelter or like a sanctuary to help their population & rescue.. but seeing these majestic creatures and how very intelligent they are is absolutely incredible.. God bless the good ppl who truly love & respect them and take good care of them..
I was amazed at that too, and I get that they should have been left in the wild but now only 3 of the last 20 orcas are wild caught, the rest were born at SeaWorld or another oceanarium, it’s amazing like kyuquot whose almost 10 thousand pounds and perform flips with ease, these amazing animals are very smart...
They train them with hand signals. For example the shaking of hand signals them towave their fins the hand up and down to put their tail fins up and wave or the pointing to jump out of the water.
really, people dying from a pandemic isnt sad to you? i mean kids who passed on, wont experience anything anymore, nobody died in this video, you dont have any feelings at all....ouch... cold.....
The fin is hooked over because they are in captivity and it’s exposed to heat. They don’t have skills anymore to go into the wild also they travel and migrate during the seasons and that doesn’t happen in a pool smh 2020 humans are treated like captive animals now y’all know why they be going wild 😜 I also notice how the fin is much smaller and the whale 🐳 is big so maybe that’s why the fin didn’t bow
One has to remember that when many of these Orcas were initially captured; whale hunting was going on hot and heavy. As Chief Dan George wrote: if you talk to the animals, they will talk to you. If you do not talk to them; you will not know them. What one does know; one will destroy. There are 2 types of Orcas transient and pod. Completely different. People are very aware of Orcas because of their aquarium existence. How concerned are you the people for still hunted Sperm, Humpback, Blue or Grey whales. Humans typically join the rah, rah of the moment..
Very good question, thank you for that, I wish you can see the rest of the comments I get, most of them are angry, disgusting words, bad words, people that don’t really care and just want to get on the bandwagon…. I used to be in the middle and these antis made me go with the pros, both sides would make comments but pros are way different that antis, again you should see the rest of the comments from antis…
@@Tilikum16 im sorry antis are so crazy and think saying bad words a lot makes them cool no it does not im sick of going on to marine park video lets say you type in marineland canada but everyone will say seaworld is makeing kiska suffer they captured her shut down seaworld dont go to seaworld ON A VIDEO THATS NOT EVEN A SEAWORLD VIDEO i dont think you shoud say anti seaworld comments on seaworld videos
9:25 And when they really want to be heard, they breach!! ...which we will conveniently skip over as non of these whales will ever get to do that due to the water not being deep enough and them not having enough space...
They just didnt go on cue lol theyre not robots where you can ask them and they will do right away lol, didnt you see them breach several times at the start? i'll give you an example, thats a center belly breach by Ulises himself @1:28, whose almost 10 thousand pounds out and in the water. 35 feet deep water....
I just googled this Contrary to popular belief, it's not just in captive whales. The phenomenon is more common in captivity, but people have also seen wild orcas with curved fins. Warmer temperatures can disrupt collagen's structure and rigidity. Which may explain why more captive whales have curved fins.
Incorrect. Orcas in the wild often have a slumped over fin. Has nothing to do with health. Don’t get me wrong I am not saying they are happy or healthy, just that the fun is not an indicator
hopefully you ran for president, wow you are so smart. whats next? are you going to predict what happens in the future? are you a millionaire now? wow may we kiss your feet?
Very impressed to see them stop the show to allow them to do what they were naturally doing to communicate, and that they took the time to explain to the audience what was happening. Much respect. Education is important!
I thought that little mishap was quite cute and gave an opportunity to give a more educational experience instead of just circus tricks. Lucky for the crowd to witness real orca behavior. I found that more interesting then just splashing and jumping.
All captive adult male have collapsed dorsal fins, likely because they have no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish. SeaWorld claims that this condition is common-however, in the , it rarely ever happens and is a sign of an injured or unhealthy .
These orcas can no longer go in the wild and they may not be happy in the tank. Urgh this though just fills me with sadness. Is SeaWorld going to continue breeding orcas?
you might be on the other side of this conversation, meaning an anti, but at least you are asking questions, it fills me with sadness that some people are still not informed, for your information, SeaWorld stopped breeding last March 17, 2016 thats over 5 years already, the 20 orcas in their parks will be the last of its generation, i mean if people stopped and googled everything, they would know what SeaWorld is doing, they also stopped "theatrical shows" at least for their California location, SeaWorld San Diego....to some people this Orca Encounter style is educational but boring... Orlando and San Antonio are still kind of Theatrical with the music, but in terms of education, SeaWorld wants everyone to be educated most especially about the orcas they are taking care of.
What y’all don’t really know is an orca is actually a part of the dolphin family they are the largest dolphin they are very well maintained I love my local orcas here in Orlando
EXACTLY! most antis are, oh im sick to my stomach, omg im sad, wow small pool, i dont see anyone picketing anywhere, as if they actually cared, they can only afford to leave comments on my channel and get back to their own problems, its the only easy way out.... put your money where your mouth is......or in your "fingers" lol
No captive born Orcas have yet lived past 30yrs of age when they are capable of living from 70-90yrs of age in there normal habitat with that being said I think this in itself explains an awful lot.
thats actually a lie lol Orkid is 31... she was the first baby shamu from San Diego, born Sept 23, 1988. and thats when SeaWorld was just starting its breeding program, Ky and Takara are both 28 getting close to that age, Shouka and Keet are both 27...if theyre dead before 30 then you will be right...but as of now...nope.
Sea World, despite it's huge faults, is responsible for a large number of biologists. It has educated millions of people about sea life. I think people seem to forget that Sea World isn't all bad. I'm not suggesting the shows continue but I think people should consider what Sea World has done for generations of children. Going to Sea World, aquariums, zoo's, etc. is the only chance some kids will ever have to see how majestic some animals are. Especially ones that grew up without the internet. I'd argue the one of the main reasons that people actually care about the orcas at Sea World is because Sea World taught them how amazing they are.
Matriarchal societies weren't structured the same as patriarchal societies in that rather than having a line of authority, they encouraged and assisted each person to practice their personal interests in a creative way as opposed to a structured way to allow freedom of expression while keeping peaceful relations with others.
I was told that their fins curve because their back muscles are weak.In the wild they dont spend so much time out of the water and their huge dorsal fins can no longer be supported
I had the pleasure of going to see a live Orca whale show a couple times when I was younger and it is still enjoyable to observe the educational facts about them with their trainers years later on my cellphone!
I have been going to sea world San Diego since 1981 and I've seen many changes over that time. I remember the birth of Mamu, Shamus daughter, and the every hour on the hour stunt shows that seemed so innocent to my child eyes. Now I know better. I see that sea world has come a long way in protecting these beautiful creatures and they work hard every single day saving sick and injured wildlife. The shows are now once a day, with very little interaction between handlers and orcas. The orcas they have can never be freed for obvious reasons, so they are doing what they can to take care of them. This is the last generation to live like this, and i am glad. Thank you sea world for taking care of these magnificent beasts as best you can. I support you
Such beautiful creatures. I wish they had habbitats you could veiw them in not just them being show animals just to be able to view swing and stuff loin at a zoo tyoe thing. Since you cant release orcas back into the wild after tamed.
Not only can't you re-release the tamed whales, some of the whales were actually born in captivity! Where would those captive born whales go? I certainly wish that we could just let them live out their lives in huge ocean pens. Even though humans would still have to feed them at least they wouldn't be forced to be circus animals any more. Cheers!
This was by far one of my favorite Orca Encounters. It's nice when the animals misbehave and the trainers can come out and talk. Corky is definitely a great mother teacher and disciplinarian.
All right I can’t handle these comments. Zoo-focused vet student here. Dorsal fin collapse is NOT a sign of depression or disease. It likely has to do with collagen breakdown due to whales in human care spending more time at the surface than their wild counterparts. Collapse DOES occur in the wild, just not as commonly as in captivity. Of this group of whales, only Corky and Ulises were born in the wild and have been in human care for DECADES. SeaWorld hasn’t taken wild-caught orcas in 40+ years. These orcas were born in human care and do NOT have the skills to survive in the wild. “Setting them free” would kill them. Yes, the tanks could be larger. They were built in the 1980s when we had under 20 years of experience keeping orcas in human care. Most other zoo animals have been kept since the 1800s earlier, so we have much better ideas of what they need. SeaWorld had plans to significantly expand their orca habitats, but this was shot down by the city of San Diego (animal rights activists had a hand in it too, but that’s a different story). It was called the Blue World Project. There is nothing cruel about shows. Marine mammal training pioneered the positive reinforcement movement because there is quite literally no way to force an animal that size to do what you want. Positive reinforcement training is about building trust (this is hammered into us in vet school). Animals are never (and to be fair, physically can’t be) forced to “perform.” Training acts an enrichment for them. Shows are nothing more than training sessions in front of an audience and set to music. They are not depressed. Try looking at some other videos on this account, and you can see the orcas playing with their toys and environmental enrichment even when trainers aren’t around. They aren’t starved. Starved orcas have “peanut head.” These animals receive complete monthly physicals from veterinarians to ensure they’re in superior health. SeaWorld is an AZA-accredited facility responsible for rescuing and rehabilitating 35,000+ animals. AZA accreditation is awarded to only 10% of zoological facilities in the US and demands superior animal care and a dedication to conservation and public education. Free Willy was a good movie, but it was PRETEND. Blackfish was an extraordinarily well-made propaganda film filled with misinformation. And at the end of the day, you got your wish. When this generation of orcas is gone, there will be no more left in human care in North America, and we will have lost the incredible opportunity we had to know and study these animals.
Went to SeaWorld Orlando Nov 2023. Show was only 15 minutes. They did not use the gate you see here. They also had 4 Orca whales in the show. Saw online, once all the orcas in captivity die, they will no longer have them. Gald we got to see them before their all gone. Their absolutely beautiful. And amazingly smart.
I think they handled to situation well. They are animals and animals have a hierarchy and the trainers allowed them to keep their response to behaviors they don’t like. A young dog or chicken would get the same response from an elder no matter the age gap. I think the trainers did a great job conducting the presentation and explaining the situation. I am glad they are no continuing the breeding and capturing of these beautiful animals. Funding animal education and protection is one thing but exploiting them for profit is wrong when it clearly has shown to affect their health and well-being being in captivity. That part is sad.
atleast this is better than the other old shows. but in Denmark they banned elephants in circus and the elephants went to the zoo, what happened? they got ill, bored, aggressive etc because they were used to perfoming and easily got bored and depressed. this in Sea World is better than old shows, but you can NOT stop showing them off etc because thats their entire life and if they suddenly are not allowed to performe they might actually get ill and depressed. you have to remember its all they know etc and their only way of stimulation...ban all shows and you have doomed them. not condoning what is going on but we have to give them the what they want for the rest of their lifes. if they are ok not perfoming, its great dont force them. if they start getting bored, depressed etc start the shows again! and if thats the case, plz do support the whales by go seeing the shows, because they know u there and if u dont, sea world cant afford feed them, they cant afford trainers, whales will then start suffering. dont go there and support SW but go there and support the whales! by not going there are u not just harming SW but actually harming the whales! thats why the circus elephants in denmark are now even though in a zoo performing sometimes just to keep them happy.
Clearly the Matriarch was sent in to set him straight because that is how they train them to get in line with the program. It's a tactic used to intimidate them & the matriarch needs to make sure they are all fed and not punished as a consequence of him not complying
Re: Wild Orcas with curved dorsal. A pair of brothers, Port and Starboard, are examples. They like going after white sharks. One has a dorsal that falls to the left, Port. The other has a dorsal that has fallen to the right, Starboard.
I find it disgusting what humans will do just for the price of admission. Poor animals don’t belong in a concrete tub.
Fins bent over, these Orca are sad and depressed!!!
how about the ones with the straight fins, like 54 year old Corky, are they happy and ecstatic?
Bruh! That's Shamu. His Fin got hit by a boat.
I'm so confused I don't understand why San Diego is still having shows.. that was supposed to have ended a couple of years ago..

I will never take my family to one of these. They are worse the the zoo.

Notice they no longer get in the pool with them
i think they’re not longer allowed to
I also notice the lady puts up the barrier sometimes as well.
Yeah it's kinda illegal now
El Pistolero I remember when they used to
Yeah they stopped that years ago after the last attack 🤨
Look at all the hooked fin. They are so sad.
ok so the ones with the straight dorsal fins like Corky who chased Makani are very happy?
In Canada we banned orca breeding and captivity. I think Canada currently has 1 orca in captivity
Britain has none
How special. Its banned in the US as well. Has been for a while now, though Canada likely did it sooner. The US may have had more orcas in general as well. Any you see in shows like this are just the last few.
But Canada wouldn't you want a friend in life being alone gotta suck...😑😑😑✌✌✌
Good for you!
Thank for this information.
In such tight quarters, one orca tries to go over another and breaks the fin for good. They never revert.
Wish they’d quit w/ the “Killer Whale”. Orca sounds more accurate to me.
I totally agree specially taking into account it is a type of dolphin an not a whale..
Sad part is that they can't set them free, these whales have no idea how to be whales. Since they were taken away from there family at such a young age, they dont know anything. And for people who think that they should be set feet they should really take that to mind, they cant speak the language, the dont know how to hunt or dive. vriska Circuit this reminded me of what happened to the orca keiko 🥺
And not only that but there are the ones who were born in captivity.
I'm guessing they saw Free Willy then?!
I wouldn't say it's sad. As you said, they don't know how to be whales, so they have everything they need right there. They are pretty much treated like royalty. I don't see the sad part in that.
These orcas were all born in cap. The only whale that they had that was born wild was tilly.
Those trainers even know what being captive does to these animals.
This only peaked my interest as I thought it was the show where the orca drowned a trainer
I had to guard circus elephants, they were pissed all the time
Tbh, i hate that those orcas live in captivity, they are so pretty!
Marcus McDade release whale to wild, still make good fin soup....we sick of bats
The fins are bent almost completely over 😢 they are not happy, it's horrible
Wait a minute so if your basing it on fins, how about Corky? she’s been in captivity over 50 years, she’s actually on this video, she has a straight dorsal fin, so that means she’s happy…???
@@Tilikum16his could mean the killer whale is scared or happy so possibly she/he was happy! edit: use to own on so yeah.
Scared or happy basing on dorsal? It’s more confusing now with that statement…
Make the sacrifice of these orca’s freedom garner more than dollars.
they were in the process of building them a bigger habitat till the City of San Diego voted them down, Seach "Blue World Project"
Tilikum16 will do! Thanks
Let them interact with the seal displays ;). That'd make their day!
For everyone saying this is an old video- they never claimed that this was Tillikum, all orca names are listed in the description
16:55 she gave him one fish he was mad his attitude change then
In the wild they do not constantly eat. They must keep them.hungry to force them to work. That is sick.
In the wild they hunt 10% of there time cuz they are really effective at it
I'm so torn with Sea World.
Finally someone said it
It’s actually a break down of the collagen, very common in the wild as well, but not like captivity.
agreed, but not all people listen.
I heard it's from them being malnourished
God, what amazing creatures! So majestic, mysterious, and intelligent! I think they are amongst the most beautiful creatures of the sea.
Preach I feel bad for keiko I loved that movie poor thing
That's what I'm saying how do you know the animals don't like what they're doing people need to chill. Meanwhile they're dressing up their dog and walking it in a stroller how does the dog feel about that???
For Lolita, there was a plan to have her in an enclosed netted area in a bay, I can't specifically remember where, but there were plans for her to be free but also not just left to her own devices after decaades of captivity. Keiko's treatment was really horrible, and I think people have learned from it.
FACTS well said 💜🙏💯
@@ilovejoharai LOL right
I don't like this either but the way they train those orcas is amazing
I don’t get why people always scream when they’re splashed it’s just water.
or when the orcas perform a behavior....lol
This might be a stupid question but why does only 1 trainer put a metal gate up when giving commands etc? I'm guessing so that specific orca doesn't come up to far onto the platform?
I mean how on earth do they control these giant beasts. How do they train them? I can barely train my dog 😦 it’s so sad really
I miss tilikum like his story was so sad. I miss keiko too :((
Their poor dorsalfins 😭😭
it really is amazing how much damn money these stupid places make and they refuse to make large enclosures for these animals and treat them properly. there is a right way to keep these animals and the greedy bastards up top don't care. you cant set these animals free at this point.
normally i wouldn't allow your comment to go through(as it had LIGHT bad words compared to others that contain the F Word, UA-cam has a reminder that everyone respect each other in this community, but no one follows that) but i see this a moment i can tell you, SW wanted to(also you mentioned a fact that they couldn't free them at this point) starting with SWC - SeaWorld San Diego, but the government shut that idea down, "Blue World Project" look it up...
What went wrong was the calf was misbehaving and not doing what he was suppose to do and chased the adult female until she corrected him.
acting like a child oh ok
Wow that pools tiny. However i appreciate they let them have their time, and this was a lot more "educational" than the previous entertainment "shows"
The only thing that bugs me is that they call them whales when in fact, Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family and are in no way related to any species of whale
thats the only thing that bugs you ?!?! SeaWorld does call them what they are, and thats where i found out they are the largest dolphins....in fact @8:37 they say just that, and how many times did u hear Orca, even the title says Orca Encounter. not Killer Whale Encounter...
oh by the way.....
en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Killer_whale
The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey.
Finally, I get to find u, someone who knows that they're actually dolphins and not whales
I always thought they were called originally “whale killers” and it just got switched over the years. Who knows...
All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins; terms can't be reversed. Dolphins and orcas are toothed kind whales
Until you can show me an Orca without a curled dorsal fin in captivity I WILL NOT GIVE YOU A DIME!

@@Tilikum16 That's so interesting!! I feel like more people should know these things. Thanks for the info!!!
They train them with hand signals. For example the shaking of hand signals them towave their fins the hand up and down to put their tail fins up and wave or the pointing to jump out of the water.
They're beautiful..
This is the saddest thing I've ever seen.
really, people dying from a pandemic isnt sad to you? i mean kids who passed on, wont experience anything anymore, nobody died in this video, you dont have any feelings at all....ouch... cold.....
The fin is hooked over because they are in captivity and it’s exposed to heat.
They don’t have skills anymore to go into the wild also they travel and migrate during the seasons and that doesn’t happen in a pool smh
2020 humans are treated like captive animals now y’all know why they be going wild 😜
I also notice how the fin is much smaller and the whale 🐳 is big so maybe that’s why the fin didn’t bow
Humans typically join the rah, rah of the moment..
why do you seem hostile when you respond to comments? kinda weird
Very good question, thank you for that, I wish you can see the rest of the comments I get, most of them are angry, disgusting words, bad words, people that don’t really care and just want to get on the bandwagon…. I have heard from a marine biologist that if the fin is bent over that the orca is sick
(I know it's not always the case)
so which is it, sick or not sick?
@@Tilikum16 yes most of the time it means their sick but there can sometimes be other cases to like that their getting hit by a boat
I wonder if the orcas in the pool can recognize the orcas on the screen.
The flopped over dorsal fin means that these whales are UNHEALTHY and slowly going mad.
then that means that straight dorsal fins are HEALTHY and are very happy ???
Tbh that only happens because they spend more time out of the water. The exposure to the air causes that
I just googled this
Contrary to popular belief, it's not just in captive whales. The phenomenon is more common in captivity, but people have also seen wild orcas with curved fins. So, the cause cannot be captivity alone.
Ultimately, what's going on is the collagen in the dorsal fin is breaking down. One reason this may happen is from temperature. Warmer temperatures can disrupt collagen's structure and rigidity. Which may explain why more captive whales have curved fins.
Incorrect. Orcas in the wild often have a slumped over fin. Has nothing to do with health. Don’t get me wrong I am not saying they are happy or healthy, just that the fun is not an indicator
As a toddler I always knew something was wrong in the orca’s dorsal fins . Turns out I was right
hopefully you ran for president, wow you are so smart. whats next? are you going to predict what happens in the future? are you a millionaire now? wow may we kiss your feet?
As a toddler you crapped your pants as a teen you still did so not sure you were that perspective. Lol people are nuts
Very impressed to see them stop the show to allow them to do what they were naturally doing to communicate, and that they took the time to explain to the audience what was happening. Much respect. Education is important!
Thanks for the show. Saved us a ton of money and the quality was awesome.
I thought that little mishap was quite cute and gave an opportunity to give a more educational experience instead of just circus tricks. Lucky for the crowd to witness real orca behavior. I found that more interesting then just splashing and jumping.
Thanks!
thank you!
The trainer did a great job explaining the communication and the aspects of their training! 🥰
All captive adult male have collapsed dorsal fins, likely because they have no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish. SeaWorld claims that this condition is common-however, in the , it rarely ever happens and is a sign of an injured or unhealthy .
They are such beautiful and amazing animals❣️
Tillikum was in orlando, not San Diego
They’re so beautiful. So smart. So majestic.
What y’all don’t really know is an orca is actually a part of the dolphin family they are the largest dolphin they are very well maintained I love my local orcas here in Orlando
They are amazingly smart.
These creatures are amazing and everyone is saying their sad but why is no one doing anything
EXACTLY! most antis are, oh im sick to my stomach, omg im sad, wow small pool, i dont see anyone picketing anywhere, as if they actually cared, they can only afford to leave comments on my channel and get back to their own problems, its the only easy way out.... put your money where your mouth is......or in your "fingers" lol
All that explains is we haven't been breeding whales for 70 yrs. Seriously, the glue goes on the paper, not up the nose.
Omggggg their fins :'(
omg what about them lol
I was told that their fins curve because their back muscles are weak.In the wild they dont spend so much time out of the water and their huge dorsal fins can no longer be supported
man I expected soo much more!ZZZZZZZZZZ
They are so smart! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to understand what they are saying? So trainable!
I’d never go to any sea animal exhibit but stop saying zoos are bad .. 95% of zoos are where rescue animals live ..
Amazing
Apparently these are cleverer than humans
Orlando SeaWorld still have these shows but they are not in Sun
I pray these animals are treated well and are happy. It would break my heart if they were sad.

I support you
In no way was the title of this video click bait, but I was expecting something… more…
That said, I’m glad everyone was ok.
Some people have to satisfy their thirst for blood and just wants to see what went wrong, thank you for the comments…
Cheers!
@@longwhitemane all of the whales were born in cap

This was by far one of my favorite Orca Encounters. It's nice when the animals misbehave and the trainers can come out and talk. Corky is definitely a great mother teacher and disciplinarian.
same here, not much went on, even if Makani got Corky angry, she was just chasing him, trying to discipline her adopted grandson lol
If it’s so majestic, treat it with care.
I have no idea what went wrong here, but I enjoyed watching this I’ve never been to seaworld :(
All right I can’t handle these comments.
ORCAS ARE UNPREDICTABLE BUT BEAUTUFUL..
John 3:16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
