@@carolinaszczesniak6207 Don't forget that the position of the teacher of the Defence Against Dark Arts was cursed. Why would Dumbledore out Snape so early, when he had a scam artist applying?
I love how the ENTIRE STAFF kept trying to either expose or kill Lockhart. Whether they were friends or foes, they all came together on the front of despising Gilderoy Lockhart.
ok then I was actually going to float the idea that Dumbledore and Lockhart was sleeping together, hence the job. We expect this from our heterosexual bosses, but you would think that gay bosses would have a little bit more integrity when it came to hiring people based off of their credentials. Nice going, Albus. First you date someone who is literally wizarding Hitler, And then you hire a guy who’s only profitable skill involves stealing other people‘s memories.
@@jennali9800 correct, but the joke doesn't become less funny Yes they should have either credited the original creator of the joke if they could, or if people were lead to believe they made the joke correct them
I like Lockhart's first name: Gilderoy. To gild is to coat with gold, and "roy" comes from the French word _roi,_ meaning "king", making his first name mean "golden king". An excellent name for someone who is full of himself.
Really, though, you'll love his first name in the Dutch translation. His name is Gladianus, which is a wordplay on 'Gladjanus', which pretty much boils down to slick git.
Lockhart was so important to Harry's development. He showed Harry how difficult it is to succeed as a wizard with only one spell. Because of Lockhart, Harry learned two spells.
Or specifically to give Lockhart his comeuppance. Showcasing he’s incompetent of a wizard. Why else snape enjoyed the chance of showcasing that incompetence.
NightBurst Studios Which is what Harry Potter does and how his family got his money...which leads me to believe there was more to the story of why Lockhart was hired.

He still doesn't have the right NEWTs so shouldn't that still stop him? Does he have to go back to school after defeating Voldemort. I mean potions was required and nothing about beating Voldemort says he's good at potions.
Bryan G in most cases test score dictate eligibility. However, Harry had more real life experience and developed skill than 50% of aurors by that point. No kids his age ever had that experience, except maybe a small handful. It’s like if you only graduated high school but learned the necessary knowledge to develop a cancer cure. It wouldn’t matter at that point, every university in the world would probably give you honorary degrees and beg you to teach at that point.
on the back of hundreds of wizards, DA, dumbledore, massive plot armor, deus ex machina, and his mother's love which as we all know is the strongest force in the universe (i say all of this in jest, HP is my favorite book of all time)
I never thought about the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers like that Quirrel: Has the dark lord living in the back of his head Lockhart: Takes credit for other people’s work Lupin: Can turn into a horrifying werewolf Moody: Someone meant to be in prison who is impersonating somebody Umbridge: Tortures students by daily making them scrape their hands Snape: The man who nobody likes and has hated a student for the past 17 years
Henrietta Anne Ele S There are: 2 Ravenclaws(Quirrel and Lockhart) 2 Slytherins (Snape, Barty Crouch Jr an Umbridge) 1 Gryffindor (Lupin) How ever if Mad eye was the DADA professor then there would be 2 from each house.
Sometimes fan theories are pretty cool. But Hagrid actually stated that no one else applied for the DADA post, so Lockhart was the only option. Due to a lack of proper teaching options I can only guess that's when Dumbledore chose to hire him and expose him as a fraud. Plus Dumbledore knew the DADA position had been cursed by that point. So I'm sure he knew that whatever hijinks Gilderoy would get into was only temporary until he could fill the position by a proper witch or wizard.
@@Talyrion Yes, but Dumbledore didn't want Snape to become the teacher, so he was technically disqualified from the beginning. Leaving only Lockhart left.
Well Quirell "Moody" and Snape (I think) did actually teach a fair amount but yeah they all kind of had nefarious ulterior motives except sort of Snape.
My favorite Lockhart moment is him signing autographs to himself in St. Mungos. Also pretty sure that the reason Dumbledore hired him is that at the very least, he didn't have Voldemort sticking out of the back of his head. Favorite DADA teacher is easily Lupin.
Didn't Hagrid say in the book the only reason Dumbledore hired Lockhart was because literally no one else would apply for the job? I don't know about any one else, but I have been in numerous situations where my company only hired some one was because they really needed somebody to do the job and no one else applied. I figured Dumbledore (as well as the entire Hogwarts staff and faculty) knew Lockhart was an idiot (Hell, some of them probably taught Lockhart while he was at Hogwarts and remember that outside of charms he was not that talented). But, if his only options were to A) have no one teach DADA indefinitely (which was not a real option) or B) have Lockhart do it and do it poorly until they could find a more qualified teacher, then the later option was the better. Something tells me that if he could Dumbeldore would have picked someone else in a heart beat.
We know that Moody only took the job as a favour to Dumbledore, Slughorn was actively recruited and, frankly, I doubt Firenze ever offered himself up as willing to take the Divination job. Putting these together leaves me with the impression that Dumbledore went out and found Lupin too. So, in this sense, it's a question of why didn't Dumbeldore track down someone else he knew who might take the job to be an alternative candidate... to which these explanations make sense. (Also, there is, ahem, always Snape.) Regardless I recently re-read Chamber of Secrets and while I don't remember if it was Hagrid who said this you're definitely right that someone said no-one else applied. Which the video really should have mentioned.
This. Also...are people forgetting that all the students and the teachers too thought the position was cursed long before Harry's time at Hogwarts? EVERY POSSIBLE TEACHER in the country went to Hogwarts themselves and knew this. Only desperate people or those doing favors are going to dismiss that. I mean who wants something messed up to happen to them at worst, or be job hunting again after a year at best?
Yeah, that's the reason. The fact that it was known that being a professor of DADA in Hogwarts was more of a curse than a privilege forced Dumbledore to choose someone that could get the job just for the fame of teaching Harry Potter, because if he didn't found anyone, as it is said in the 5th book, the ministry could choose a professor to replace the previous one, something that Dumbledore wouldn't accept. So yeah, Dumbledore didn't choose Lockhart to teach a lesson to Harry, as well as he didn't hired Slughorn to teach a lesson to Harry but to learn something from Slughorn that Dumbledore himself couldn't get to know even with some veritaserum
Also, in the 6th book we learn that Dumbledore knew that the job was in fact jinxed, and teachers could only stay on for a year. Dumbledore must have known that Lockhart would only be able to be there for a year, and then he'd get s new chance to find someone much better.
Do the books explain why Dumbledore never filled the position? I mean, he was the greatest wizard alive and could easily teach for a year or even split with someone else.
The handy thing is that "the Order of the Phoenix" actually demonstrates how the older year students can work around having a poor professor, the more advanced students help the less advanced. The other possibility is that Dumbledore or other professors helped out students when asked.
Or the simple answer is the best answer - Dumbledore hired the only available option for the job because the job is cursed and nobody wants it. Lockhart wanted it so that he could sell his books and market himself as even more as someone who actually did those things he said he did.
This is my reasoning as well. Especially after Quirrel died I think people would be even more scared to take the job. You know how rumours magnify in size. So people could have thought that the job was cursed to the point you die and wouldn't want the job. Lockhart obviously saw this as another chance to boost his fame as the only person who'd dare to take on the job!
Wait! Dumbledore cancels exams at the end of COS! He uses the students' petrification as an excuse but what if he just...cancelled them because he knew that Lockhart was useless so there was nothing to test? A brilliant plan, indeed!
Marauders4EVR He can cancel end year exams, but I don’t believe he can cancel OWLs or NEWTs. Not to mention the students who prepared for them all year would be pissed if they simply got cancelled as a treat.
In Dumbledore's defense: He didn't hire Umbridge She was hired by the Ministry of Magic since Dumbledore was unable to find someone to fill the position as DADA teacher
I used to like them better. They have been making more and more far fetched theories just for clicks, and it's kind of killing the magic for me. If rather have more videos with their opinions and facts than with theories at this point.
@@SherrifOfNottingham Snape does have a love/hate relationship with him. He hates his existence being the offspring of his childhood bully and the love of his life, but he also reminds him of her. He also reminds him of his father and that's why he is mean to him most of his school days.
@@francargeric1 I think Snape is the closest thing Harry had to a father, like sure there's other good parental beings in Harry's life, but Snape does everything he does because he actually cares about Harry... He hates the Potter in him, but he cares for Harry like a step son.
@@SherrifOfNottingham noo definitely not. He didn't care about Harry as an individual, he cared about Lily. The only thing he liked about Harry was his connection with the love of his life. That is not very fatherly.
Hagrid said it when talking to Ron, Hermione and the dark haired kid. When Ron complained Hagrid said Lockhart was the only person to apply for the job. Dumbledore didn't want Snape to take the job because he suspected it was cursed. I'm sure he warned Lupin and Imposter/Mad Eye Moody before they took they job too. I'm sure Dumbledore didn't mind letting Umbridge find out for herself. There is a glaring inconsistency of a score of teachers had to have been harmed after Voldemort cursed it when Dumbledore blocked his attempt to be a teacher, which had to have been 10 years or more prior to Harry coming to Hogwarts. Yet no mention is made about that in all the books. Nor does Snape ask Voldemort to remove a curse he had to know was there. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
teachers didnt have to be harmed they just had to be rendered unable to teach more than one year. for example Lupin quit just bcs others found out about him being werevolf but nothing physicaly happened to him
Snape doesn't asks Voldemort to lift the curse because before he takes the job he already knows what is going to happen within the next year : Either he kills Dumbledore, which obviously means he won't be the DATDA teacher anymore ; Draco / someone else / the ring's curse kills Dumbledore... in which case the only person who would trust Snape to teach the subject would be gone, and he either leaves the school or goes back to Potions.
Dumbledore got so annoyed with Lockhart that he hired him because he knew that he wouldn't last a year and hoped to get rid of him. By the way my favorite DADA teacher is Harry. It really is!
I think you missed a couple obvious points. One, Dumbledore hired him because he could not get anyone else. This problem with DATDA teachers not lasting very long was a problem that persisted since long before Harry was alive. So he was rather desperate to put anyone in that position, and couldn't put Snape in it because he'd lose his single most important asset. And two, knowing this problem as Dumbledore knows, and knowing that Lockhart was a fraud, Dumbledore could very well have hired him just so he'd get his comeuppance. He's wiping people's memories and taking credit for their work? Dumbledore knows this, but can't prove it in court. So he just gives him this seemingly cushy job, with a famous pupil as bait, and let karma just happen.
Favorite Lockhart Moment:: Him getting absolutely savaged by McGonagall. Favorite Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher:: I'm torn between Lupin and Barty Crouch Jr. Hear me out! Barty Jr as Mad-eye Moody was actually a pretty great teacher. Even though he definitely had his own agenda, he did point Neville toward his true passion; herbology. He taught the students about the actual Unforgivables through demonstration on a tailless whip scorpion which gave the students a better understanding of how they worked. He also turned Draco into a ferret and put him down Crabbe's trousers which was just epic!
@@leiziefy True, but in using the Imperius Curse on the students, he was teaching them how to resist it. I honestly don't think Barty Jr was on anyone's side but his own.
I think you guys might have missed something. Something REALLY BIG about Lockhart: His skill with memory charms. Now why would DUMBLEDORE hire a person who may be the most adept at MEMORY charms. DUMBLEDORE… MEMORIES… CONNECTION!!! I’m guessing that Dumbledore was in the process of collecting memories from other people around the time of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but he didn’t know how to extract them from other people, so he called upon the expertise of a wizard who modified the memories of two wizards whom he knows did something that this very wizard took credit for. Yes. That implies that Lockhart WAS in fact an integral cog in the instrument of Lord Voldemort’s downfall!!!
My opinion? Hogwarts was losing students to Beauxbaton, Ilvermorny, and Durmstrang. Dumbledore needed some star power to draw back some students. They needed some good PR after that whole "hiring the dark lord's host to teach defense against the dark arts" fiasco the year before. *Edited for spelling.
Hagrid is an amazing Care of Magical Creatures teacher... pretty sure he would know even less about DADA than Gilderoy Lockhart. Difference is, he'd have the decency to admit it.
You're correct. Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts, had his wand broken (though later repaired by Albus Dumbledore) and was banned from doing magic after being falsely implicated in the original opening of the Chamber of Secrets (which caused the death of "Moaning" Myrtle). His wand was later concealed in his pink umbrella, and he uses it to do some minor magic throughout the series: Never anything too impressive, he can start a fire enough to cook sausages, and can give Dudley Dursley a pig's tail but not completely transfigure him. This suggests several things: He may have had his ban on spellcasting lifted at some point, or it's just not very vigorously enforced (he casts a few minor spells and the Ministry usually doesn't seem to care). His apparent lack of spell-casting ability could be indicative of 2 things: Either his wand was never fully repaired (rendering it unable to effectively cast advanced magic) or Hagrid simply never learned any advanced magic, having been expelled part way through his third year (around age 12). Both may be possible at the same time. Altogether, this seems to paint a picture of a man you would not want teaching a class that requires advanced knowledge of spellcraft, and a functioning wand.

Humorously enough, i think my favorite Lockhart moment is the Cornish Pixies, and in a weird way, how even the smallest, seemingly weakest of things should not be underestimated. It was almost a good lesson, except he didn't realize he was doing it. My favorite DADA teacher was Lupin. I liked that he actually knew stuff, and actually taught stuff, as opposed to being worthless, being terrible. or being so big on himself that he was awful.
Kenneth Branaugh? A director of Shakespearian film adaptation? Ex husband of Emma Thompson? Current President of the Royal Academy of Dramtic Art? I know he did direct a comic book movie but I am assuming the studio left his pay on the dresser.
His actor Kenneth Branagh was formely married to Emma Thompson who played Sybill Trelawney and they divorced after finding out he had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter who played Belatrix Lestrange

My favorite Lockhart moments is when he duels Snape and Snape easily defeats him. Then he gets up and says he could've easily blocked that and let it happen just for demonstration.😂😂😂
In the books it was quite obvious that snape was toying with her when they duelled. He coudn’t harm her because she would be to important in the defence of Hogwarts. And from other bits of information I can say that in the series snape is the third most powerfull wizzard in the series after Dumbledore and Voldemort,
Roy Hoveling not Flitwick he’s a master dueller or professor mgonagal (I’ve spelt that wrong i know) they beat him at the start of the Deathly hallows part 2 anyway
Hi Flitwick was a dueling champion yes. But that implies that there are rules and regulations. Snape also being a master in de dark arts on top of regular magic has a big advantage when it comes to a duel to the death. And read my other comment about Minevra.
1) to fill the position; because of the d.a.d.a position needs to be fill every year. Until Voldemort death; as Voldemort was the one who jinx the position. 2) to give Lockhart his comeuppance or punishment. Dumbledore was aware of Lockhart activities of glory stealing, and Lockhart needs to be punished for it. 3) to showcase Lockhart real skills; which is proven multiple times in the book and movie.
All of Harry’s DADA professors could have killed him (intentionally or not): 1. Quirrell: Had Voldemort in his head. 2. Lockhart: Was willing to leave Harry and Ron in the Chamber of Secrets. 3. Lupin: Could have easily killed Harry as a Werewolf. 4. Moody: Barry Crouch led Harry to Voldemort. 5. Umbridge: Sent the Dementors to Little Whinging. 6. Snape: Hated Harry all of his life.
I'm not sure Snape hated Harry, but I think he hated that Harry reminded him of what he lost when he lost Lily everytime he looked at Harry. If someone reminded you of a the lost love of your life everytime you looked at them because of something that you could of helped prevent, you'd act like you hated that person too
I'm going to assume that Dumbledore was prevented from telling the truth because so many people had exceptional memory charms placed upon them that the truth was inaccessible. BUT, we do need to remember that Dumbledore KNEW that the job had been jinxed by Voldemort. It was jinxed in the mid-sixties, and with almost 30 years of bad luck befalling the DADA teachers, he was clearly hoping for something bad to finally befall Lockhart. Which is exactly what happened.
I mean, its Dumbledore, guy's clever, he would have figured it out after the first four or five teachers at least. He's the one who has to hire them after all.
My favorite Lockhart moment was when Snape sent him flying and my favorite DADA teacher is Remus Lupin like almost everyone else in the harry potter fandom
Artemis Wolf Flitwick should of been the one helping with the dueling club, Flitwick is an expert duelist. He defeated the death eater who bested Moody.
As great as Kenneth Branagh was, I sometimes wonder what Hugh Grant would have been like as Lockhart had he taken the part. I feel like it would have been spot on casting.
Does anyone else wonder what happened to the students taking O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s when Dumbledore canceled final exams at the end of the Chamber of Secrets?
Here are my theories to that: 1. The O.W.L s and N.E.W.Ts were taken before the final Hogwarts exams. 2. The O.W.L s and N.E.W.Ts were rescheduled. 3. Dumbledore only cancelled the normal Hogwarts exams; not the O.W.L s and N.E.W.Ts.
thank you, thought im the only one who read the books here or ppl dont remember. not mad but cheering an entire video about a reasoning that just isnt true, idk
to be honest a teacher doesn´t necessarily have to be liked to be a good teacher... although the way snape did teach potions was not a way to be a good teacher
Alegost1 Not necessarily, no, but a lot of times he was very unfair, especially to Harry. I would bet a lot of his students were cheated out of good grades. Don't get me wrong, though. Snape is actually one of my favorite characters.
I'm afraid you got it all wrong. It literally says in the books that lookhart got the job becouse no one else wanted it. Why lookhart was a ravenclaw is becouse you get asigned the house closest to your values not your actuall abilitys. Lookhart being a bookmark narcissist thought himself to be smarter than everyone else and therefore valued intelligence.
Exactly. The same goes with Neville. He isn’t nearly as ‘brave’ as the main three in the first few books but it’s a quality he prizes amongst all others. Some of these theories they run too into, if not fabricate entirely
He might not have done the stuff he claimed he did in his books but that didn't mean he was completely powerless. He was very powerful when it came to tracking down the people who actually did do the stuff he took the credit for and finding out exactly how they achieved the extraordinary feats down to the tiniest details which could be an indicator that he was quite a powerful legilimens. And he was extremely powerful when it came to performing memory charms.
Of course..now it's a relief that I found someone who actually know the truth..🙄 It's also mentioned in the book that the job of DADA teacher was considered to be jinxed by most of the people..and everyone was afraid to apply for the job..it was considered to be jinxed because every one of those people who applied for the job couldn't last for more than one year..but Lokhart still thought that the job would bring him fame..as he gets the chance to teach the famous Harry Potter.. remember how glad he was when he saw Harry at the bookstore
To be quite hones if i was Dumbeldore i would have given Snape the Defence Job and searched for another Potion Teacher. Yes maybe there is the Risk that Snape is gone in the end of the Year but at least he wouldnt have Umbritch in the School but than again Fudge would probably still make her High Iquisitor.
I feel like we need an over-arching SCB discussion about why Dumbledore seems, in hindsight, like such a bad mentor to Harry (constantly putting him in danger, not telling him vital information, etc.)
He is a bad mentor. His goal is defeat voldemort. That is it. He literally convinced Harry he had to die. For the greater good ya know. He never was a mentor it was a farce he was just using him same as he used everyone else
At the beginning of the series Dumbledore seemed like this awesome person but towards the end, as you grow up with Harry, you and Harry realize Dumbledore is a much more complicated person. In the Deathly Hallows you find out he was once freinds with Grindlewald. I feel like Dumbledore just uses people as pawns. For instance, he is shown as a person who knows most everything yet he never had Sirius get a trial after the First Wizarding War ended. You'd think Dumbledore would have some inkling that maybe Sirius is innocent. I think he suspected it but his new pawn was Harry. He sent Harry to live with the Dursleys for a reason. A freaking hippogriff got a trial yet not someone who was disowned by his family for being a Gryffindor and hanging out with muggleborns and half-bloods. If Sirius got a trial and was eventually proven innocent, Harry would have been raised by his Godfather. Dumbledore wanted Harry to be raised a certain way. I'm not saying Dumbledore is a bad person. I personally love some of the things he has said. It's just Dumbledore seems like the kind of person you really can't trust at times.
Hazelmykitten wow! I never considered that before. Dumbledore let Sirius rot to "protect" Harry. Rather than letting him be raised by his godfather, he sent him to live with the Muggles. Perhaps he feared that Harry would have turned out like James, since Sirius was his best friend. Snape's flashbacks show that James Potter was a jerk before he got together with Lilly. And Sirius was also a jerk right along with him. Without Lilly's influence, Harry Potter could have ended up a villian? Idk about that. But it is curious.
Ben: You better watch out for those Ravenclaws- Me, a Ravenclaw:...the reason people don't think we're the bad house is that unlike Slytherins we're smart enough to cover up all the evidence. - insert horror movie sound effects here -
If you look at the way the women react to him I've always suspected that Lockhart use some sort of charm or Magic to make himself Supernaturaly, attractive so if you think about it Dumbledore may have been attracted to him as well.
I don't think there were any magic charms involved. Here is how I see it. Lockheart is the Wizard World equivalent of a musician. The ladies love a musician. Even if they are plain looking. When it was revealed that he was a fraud (milli vanilli) he lost all his fans.
My favourite moments from him was when he tried to fix Harry’s arm after quidditch. Also I think the real reason Dumbledore hired him was because he was doing such horrible things to real wizards and wiping their memories, so by hiring him at Hogwarts he could keep an eye on him and prevent him from doing any more harm.
There wasn't a witch or wizard who went bad and also shared a body with the dark lord that wasn't in Ravenclaw... Is that the reason I'm in Ravenclaw? Also, Hagrid said that they only hired Lockhart because he was the literal only man for the job.
Schrödinger's Cat, except Snape. I don’t know. Between the teeth model and the grease ball, I think I’d rather start Dumbledore’s Army three years early
midgetelantrian8 but if Snivilous was given the job something would've happened to him and Dumbledore knew the position was cursed and wouldn't want his number 1 spy to be decommissioned.
wait, what? I can't remember anyone who shared their body with Voldy except Quirrell. I guess you could technically say Harry shared his body with Voldy's soul but Harry's a Gryffindor, not Ravelclaw.
Fave Lockhart quote: "If I could do anything I think I would shrink myself to the size of a mouse. I would leave the world of men behind me forever and live amongst the mice." And Gilderoy is of course my fave DAtDA, after all he has won Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award 5 times.
I don’t remember that Lockhart ever said that. And I‘m one of the biggest potterhead you can find on this earth 🌏. I read the books 📚 so many times, listened to audio books many times and watched the movies over and over again. I watched the first one 48 times, the second one 57 times, so I should know. And really don’t remember Lockhart saying that.
Wasn't there also an aspect that hiring anyone for Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was extremely hard due to reputation of the curse casted by Voldemort on this position? Curse had taken some lives in the past, so everytime Dubledore was hiring someone, he looked for few people that would agree on that job. Most of them were either guys with incredible high ego (Lockhart, Umbridge) that made them believe they can withstand the curse, or didn't really care since they were planning to leave Hogwart after a year anyway (Quirell, Barty Crouch jr., Snape, also probably Lupin). Often that led to bad teachers (even some dark guys) taking the position, but that was better PR than oficially don't have one. Revealing that Lockhart is a fraud was only a side effect that Dumbledore seemed to be happy for.
My favorite DADA professor was Remus Lupin, with a close second, Barty Crouch, Jr. (Yes, he was evil, but he was a surprisingly good teacher.) Oddly enough, Snape comes third. He KNOWS what he's talking about - he's just disgustingly mean about it all. Then, Quirrel-mort, because as much as the class was a joke (as discussed by the students), they obviously learned something. Umbridge was useless. She was put in place because she was useless, and she proved how useless she was, to no one's surprise.
My theory is that Dumbledore saw that Lockhart was tainting the wizarding community as a whole. Everyone was reading his books and believing what he put out there without damanding proof! Even supposedly smart and bright witches and wizards like Hermione was falling under his spell! I think Dumbledore wanted to put Lockhart in a contained environment where he could do the least damage while appeasing parents with having him 'teach' their children!
Invisible Ink you said it under his spell. Dumbledoor puts him in a school full of hormonal teenagers when he knows he is good at memory charms. Is it just me or dose dumbles sound evil
holy shit, that's dark... and damn, that's a very probably thing to happen - especially if Lockhart wasn't popular in school (he could want to relive it in a way where he has charm & power). I really hope that Dumbledore kept that in mind and watched Lockhart uncomfortably close.
I like that theory. And also don't forget that Dumbledore always has a very hard time filling that position. So appealing to Lockhart's ego (being a professor at the prestigious Hogwarts) and keeping Lockhart in a contained environment where he'd probably eventually be found out for the fraud he is, was like killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Even though he was a crappy professor for the role, remember what the alternative is, the Ministry of Magic gets to pick the role if Dumbledore cant
Za3chik I know it sounds dark but it is probably the dark truth of the wizard of world. Hell maybe the reason Lockhart was so good at memory charms was to cover up what he did to witches who did not fall for his nonexistent charm. This isn’t mentioning what wizards like mal fit would do to mudbloods like hermione if they were any good at magic. It would be the kind of thing he’d do.
The Best Around please read my comment and think about which is worse Lockhart under my theory or a ministry appointed teacher. Remember this is before the falling out with the ministry
O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s are done by officials outside of the school, not by Hogwarts professors. A school can cancel exams but students still have to take S.A.T.s and college entrance exams to start their future. I would still assume that those Ministry official exams took place. It just didn't have a place in Harry's world yet.
For Snape the feeling of Harry was complicated. Hating James and in love with Lilly Kind of made Snape have that love-hate thing going when he looked at Harry.
Yes. I read the series putting myself in Snape’s point of view once, and felt that acutely in Harry’s first Potions lesson. Snape called on him specifically because he hoped Harry would show some of Lily’s Potions prowess/aptitude, but when he didn’t show any, Snape surrendered to the feeling of betrayal in seeing Lily’s eyes set in James’ face & lashed out. (Then he attacks Neville because he sees his childhood self in him and his self-loathing overcomes him. None of that makes it ok that he was abusive to students, but it’s helpful to me in understanding him.)
I just realized that half of Harry’s DADA teachers were ravenclaw, because technically moody aka Barty crouch JR was a ravenclaw, while the actual movie was gryffindor
Imagine how insulted Snape was when he got passed over for Lockhart on the DADA position.

I like Lockhart's first name: Gilderoy. To gild is to coat with gold, and "roy" comes from the French word _roi,_ meaning "king", making his first name mean "golden king". An excellent name for someone who is full of himself.
Not Golden King but Gilded King, which actually adds some extra meaning, it points to him being a fraud, merely gold-coated rather than truly gold
Really, though, you'll love his first name in the Dutch translation. His name is Gladianus, which is a wordplay on 'Gladjanus', which pretty much boils down to slick git.

(Also, there is, ahem, always Snape.)
Regardless I recently re-read Chamber of Secrets and while I don't remember if it was Hagrid who said this you're definitely right that someone said no-one else applied.
Welp, Fred and George actually took notes on certain DADA spells.
“Help will always be given at hogwarts to those who ask”
Or the simple answer is the best answer - Dumbledore hired the only available option for the job because the job is cursed and nobody wants it. Lockhart wanted it so that he could sell his books and market himself as even more as someone who actually did those things he said he did.
On the positive side: Gilderoy is receiving excellent care in St. Mungo’s.
Plus, Dumbledore probably knew he would fail at some point because of the curse.
Exactly! That is way more logical. Fuck those Pottermore people giving a conspiracy theory to/theorizing everything these days 😂
TheBodyOnPC anyone who read the books knows that, but there are a lot of ignorants in this planet...
Wait! Dumbledore cancels exams at the end of COS! He uses the students' petrification as an excuse but what if he just...cancelled them because he knew that Lockhart was useless so there was nothing to test? A brilliant plan, indeed!

A lot of those comments about the other teachers was a bit more offhand and not 100% accurate, like Snape "hating" Harry.
@@SherrifOfNottingham Snape does have a love/hate relationship with him. He hates his existence being the offspring of his childhood bully and the love of his life, but he also reminds him of her. He also reminds him of his father and that's why he is mean to him most of his school days.
It was a joke, we know that the ministry put her there. Just like we know that there’s no way Dumbledore knew that Moody was actually Barty Crouch Jr.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.
teachers didnt have to be harmed they just had to be rendered unable to teach more than one year. for example Lupin quit just bcs others found out about him being werevolf but nothing physicaly happened to him
Mountain Fisher 'the dark haired kid' 😂
Snape doesn't asks Voldemort to lift the curse because before he takes the job he already knows what is going to happen within the next year :
Either he kills Dumbledore, which obviously means he won't be the DATDA teacher anymore ;
Draco / someone else / the ring's curse kills Dumbledore... in which case the only person who would trust Snape to teach the subject would be gone, and he either leaves the school or goes back to Potions.
I think the dark haired kid's name was Hoppy, no, Harriet, no that's a girl's name, Hunter, no, Harold, yeah Harold! That was it
LOL
Dumbledore got so annoyed with Lockhart that he hired him because he knew that he wouldn't last a year and hoped to get rid of him.
By the way my favorite DADA teacher is Harry. It really is!
Nice. He taught Neville how to be a real wizard.
I agree
I feel the same. Lockhart only applied cus of Harry, he was the only one willing to take the risk.
It kills me that Barty Crouch accidentally is one of the best teachers! 🤣

Hey

Hagrid is an amazing Care of Magical Creatures teacher... pretty sure he would know even less about DADA than Gilderoy Lockhart. Difference is, he'd have the decency to admit it.
Hagrid isn't allowed to use a wand, is he? So I guess that would be problematic in a classroom teaching DADA.

All of Harry’s DADA professors could have killed him (intentionally or not):
Technically the dementors wouldn't have killed him. Technically.
And that's the subject he's really good at. Lol
Yep. The only way to teach Harry anything: Threaten his life with it.
I'm not sure Snape hated Harry, but I think he hated that Harry reminded him of what he lost when he lost Lily everytime he looked at Harry. If someone reminded you of a the lost love of your life everytime you looked at them because of something that you could of helped prevent, you'd act like you hated that person too
Snape would never have killed Harry because he was Lily's son.
Dumbledore knew that the dada class was jinxed and just wanted Lockhart to suffer from it....
Robert Gronewold WAIT HE KNEW THAT?!? That just opens a whole new can of worms.
I don't know if this could be supported, but It would seem odd if he didn't at least know something was up
Artemis Wolf seriously? Even the students knew this...
I mean, its Dumbledore, guy's clever, he would have figured it out after the first four or five teachers at least. He's the one who has to hire them after all.
Lockhart was like a goat for sacrifice.
In case anyone thinks Grumpy Cat is male, she's not. And her name is Tarter Sauce.
Unfortunately, Grumpy Cat is also dead.
people should get to know the real tarter sauce (grumpy cat), instead of just making her a huge meme. she probably just wants to be a normal cat.
Yeah..
@@confusedgay9344 No she isn't. Where did you even get that idea?
She's dead now
Kenneth Branagh is freaking amazing.
Fuck mr
Favorite moment: Snape knocking Lockhart down with Disarming Charm in Dueling Club
My favorite Lockhart moment was when Snape sent him flying and my favorite DADA teacher is Remus Lupin like almost everyone else in the harry potter fandom
Is there anyone who dosnt like Lupin the most?
I love remus lupin to!!!
@@neptuneplaneptune3367 I dunno, I quite liked Umbridge...
Being exploded by fireworks.
That is all.
Fave Lockhart moment: In Colin's picture (books only )
Fave DADA teacher: Lupin
*LILAC😂*
As a ravenclaw I can confirm I shared a body with voldemort
As a Slytherin, I can confirm I did not share a body with Voldemort.
Hope you charged him rent.
Haven't we all
Carrie as a ravenclaw i can confirm I shared a Bloody Mary with Voldemort
Yeah, I AlMoSt shared my body with Voldemort, but Harry killed him before I had the chance. Dang. Also, go Ravenclaw!!
RAVENCLAW AND PROUD 🦅
not necessarily of Lockhart but proud nonetheless
Same
Artemis Wolf Flitwick should of been the one helping with the dueling club, Flitwick is an expert duelist. He defeated the death eater who bested Moody.
Or Quirrel merlin I hate them both
Nerdy Blue, fox Merlin was a Slytherin, a moral one.
Or quirell anyway #ravenclawpride
As great as Kenneth Branagh was, I sometimes wonder what Hugh Grant would have been like as Lockhart had he taken the part. I feel like it would have been spot on casting.
Holy shit, you're right. That would have been the pinnacle of douchiness.
Hamlet played Lockhart?!
I think that would have been so awesome! Not that Kenneth Branagh wasn't good but Hugh Grant as you said, would have been spot on!
i love how many harry potter vids there are lately
2:34 He is clever though, and that's a major trait that Rowena valued.
Does anyone else wonder what happened to the students taking O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s when Dumbledore canceled final exams at the end of the Chamber of Secrets?
Here are my theories to that:
I think you are right Elephant. He cannot cancel the OWLS and NEWTS because they are crucial.
Maybe errbody passed with full marks
the glitter is everywhere I think they would have got their predicted grades
And what about HBP? We know Dumbledore dies shortly before Ginny's OWLs. Exams are subsequently cancelled. 🤔🤔
Ahhh these conspiracys...I simply hired him because his favorite color was lilac...Obviously.
Albus Dumbledore You thought he was handsome also, right? 😏
S Lines ...Obliviate...
Albus Dumbledore I thought you had a sense of humor, professor. 😂
S Lines You heared nothing😉
😂😂😂
Just don’t smile and make sure you shriek “LILAC”!!! and everything will be fine.
“Gotta watch out for those Ravenclaws!”
Me: *has an identity crisis*
Hagrid directly tells us why Lockhart was hired, he was the only man for the job. No one else wanted to take it.
thank you, thought im the only one who read the books here or ppl dont remember. not mad but cheering an entire video about a reasoning that just isnt true, idk
TheAres1999 yup
@@biowiener7825 its not said in the movie, thats why most People dont know. The job had been cursed, people were scared
Whiterun Guard thank you!
@Whiterun Guard Dumbledore didn't want to give Snape the job because of his past. I think that was said somewhere in the books too.
Remus Lupin was the only good dada teacher tbh
Larissa Blokzijl Well, though he was a villain, the fake Moody did a pretty good job. Snape would have been if he wasn't so unlikable to his students.
to be honest a teacher doesn´t necessarily have to be liked to be a good teacher... although the way snape did teach potions was not a way to be a good teacher
Alegost1 Not necessarily, no, but a lot of times he was very unfair, especially to Harry. I would bet a lot of his students were cheated out of good grades. Don't get me wrong, though. Snape is actually one of my favorite characters.
i agree completely with that..... i just felt like adding something to the comment. (i hope it didn´t offend you or something like that)
Barty Crouch Junior... that's like having The Doctor as your Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.
“Gotta watch out for those ravenclaws” watch your back when you walk, Ben. Watch your back.
He better watch out 💙💙💙
#CawCaw 💙
Heh heh heh... Watch out for the wise ones.
Fernanator LOL
I'm afraid you got it all wrong.
It literally says in the books that lookhart got the job becouse no one else wanted it.
Why lookhart was a ravenclaw is becouse you get asigned the house closest to your values not your actuall abilitys. Lookhart being a bookmark narcissist thought himself to be smarter than everyone else and therefore valued intelligence.
Exactly. The same goes with Neville. He isn’t nearly as ‘brave’ as the main three in the first few books but it’s a quality he prizes amongst all others. Some of these theories they run too into, if not fabricate entirely
My favorite teacher, lookhart
He might not have done the stuff he claimed he did in his books but that didn't mean he was completely powerless. He was very powerful when it came to tracking down the people who actually did do the stuff he took the credit for and finding out exactly how they achieved the extraordinary feats down to the tiniest details which could be an indicator that he was quite a powerful legilimens. And he was extremely powerful when it came to performing memory charms.
Of course..now it's a relief that I found someone who actually know the truth..🙄
It's also mentioned in the book that the job of DADA teacher was considered to be jinxed by most of the people..and everyone was afraid to apply for the job..it was considered to be jinxed because every one of those people who applied for the job couldn't last for more than one year..but Lokhart still thought that the job would bring him fame..as he gets the chance to teach the famous Harry Potter.. remember how glad he was when he saw Harry at the bookstore
@@Achilles053 good point👏
Favorite moment? When he pretends he read the book in the restricted section and cluelessly gives them a pass.
Dumbledore didn’t hire umbridge the ministry of magic put her in the school
could not be more true
and snape wasn’t hired by dumbledore to be the teacher or moody because how would dumbledore have known that he was barty crouch jr?
To be quite hones if i was Dumbeldore i would have given Snape the Defence Job and searched for another Potion Teacher. Yes maybe there is the Risk that Snape is gone in the end of the Year but at least he wouldnt have Umbritch in the School but than again Fudge would probably still make her High Iquisitor.
Nobody wanted the job anyway
I feel like we need an over-arching SCB discussion about why Dumbledore seems, in hindsight, like such a bad mentor to Harry (constantly putting him in danger, not telling him vital information, etc.)
He is a bad mentor. His goal is defeat voldemort. That is it. He literally convinced Harry he had to die. For the greater good ya know. He never was a mentor it was a farce he was just using him same as he used everyone else
Dumblegore
Ben: You better watch out for those Ravenclaws-
Me, a Ravenclaw:...the reason people don't think we're the bad house is that unlike Slytherins we're smart enough to cover up all the evidence. - insert horror movie sound effects here -
*horror movie sound* dun Dun DUn DUN.
I’m also a ravenclaw! 💙
If you look at the way the women react to him I've always suspected that Lockhart use some sort of charm or Magic to make himself Supernaturaly, attractive so if you think about it Dumbledore may have been attracted to him as well.
Jessie Ward I really don’t find the actor for Lockhart attractive so there must have been some magic there I swear to god 😂
Dumbledore is gay even Rowling said
Peony -I don't know why but this statement was absolutely laugh-out-loud-literally to me XD
Great theory
I don't think there were any magic charms involved. Here is how I see it.
Lockheart is the Wizard World equivalent of a musician. The ladies love a musician. Even if they are plain looking. When it was revealed that he was a fraud (milli vanilli) he lost all his fans.
rip grumpy cat.
we all miss you.
This is my least favourite Lockhart moment. I was so furious at him while reading this.
I think Obi-Wan Kenobi has competition for the title of Master of Trolling.
Why is no one else remembering this? He was literally the only applicant!
wait, what? I can't remember anyone who shared their body with Voldy except Quirrell.
I guess you could technically say Harry shared his body with Voldy's soul but Harry's a Gryffindor, not Ravelclaw.
333pinkelephant333 Quirrell was a Ravenclaw
Fave Lockhart quote: "If I could do anything I think I would shrink myself to the size of a mouse. I would leave the world of men behind me forever and live amongst the mice." And Gilderoy is of course my fave DAtDA, after all he has won Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award 5 times.
Summer Lovegood I don't remember anymore but they met him again in later books (was it the 5th?)
I think the scene was removed from movie
I don’t remember that Lockhart ever said that.
And I‘m one of the biggest potterhead you can find on this earth 🌏.
I read the books 📚 so many times, listened to audio books many times and watched the movies over and over again.
I watched the first one 48 times, the second one 57 times, so I should know.
And really don’t remember Lockhart saying that.
Hanmacx Yes, it was the 6th book. They met him at St. Mungo's, but they removed most scenes of the hospital from the movie.
Magda Fachada ah OK I thought it was the 5th when they visit Ron's father in hospital
Hanmacx Oh no, typo. It was the 5th. That's why I said "yes".
“Laughs frivously” your my best friend Mark
You forgot. All the exams were cancelled that year
Booty Boy Dumbledore wasn’t planning on that though no one knew the chamber of secrets would be opened
I seriously still wonder if Dumbledore would've done that even without the Chamber being opened just 'cause DADA would've been a flop.
When he acted so cool and accidentally removed Harry’s bones from his arm “brackium emendo!” Lol
Let me get a.... BONELESS HARRY, and uh... two liter of butterbeer.

Hi fellow ravenclaw
I am a Gryffindor, and my classmates bullies me because I am the only Gryffindor there, they are Hufflepuffs.
Lilac!!! My favorite part is whenever he smiles and all the girls swoon! But Lupin was obviously the best
For Snape the feeling of Harry was complicated. Hating James and in love with Lilly Kind of made Snape have that love-hate thing going when he looked at Harry.
Yeah, that moment at the end when he tells Harry to look at him so he could see Lilly's eyes one last time was really sad.
