  • Time for another unboxing :) This will be my haul for 2022 - my first watercolor purchase since 2020! I took the plunge and purchased A. Gallo's Signature 2 palette with two additional half-pans. I am absolutely in love with these paints already... but the brush stole my heart.
    Please note that I am not sponsored. I purchased these with my own money and my opinions are fully my own. This is the first and only thing I have painted using these paints and my feelings are subject to change as I use them more.

    Bri, I’m in my third year of snatches of time stolen to paint. All inspired by the first online art tutorial I came across. I love each effort I make because I’ve made a further step on an exciting journey. I so appreciate your gift of this tutorial/blog/ video- you’ve given me inspiration for future steps. I don’t see the flaws you describe in this work. I love it I know I’m my own worst critic. Please enjoy yourself, blossom, bloom without apology. No more self deprecation. Breathe. Thank you
    Mary

    Thanks for the review. I did purchase some of these paints and truthfully they are gorgeous and honestly if I knew of these when I first started buying more expensive paints I would have tried these and only bought these. They're beautiful and just everything is amazing. I love that their handmade from a woman owned small business and love supporting small businesses especially women owned lol. The smell it's lovely and very very faint but enough for it to be relaxing to me. I love blue pigments/ paints so when I saw they had a curated blue set I had to grab it. Idk I'll stop gushing. Have a great day

    Granulation is everyone's darling right now.. but here's the thing. It's always best when used sparingly and with a purpose. No different than a very bright vibrant color.. if you use them everywhere you have a rainbow in the end. Cool, but not terribly useful. A pop of juicy color here and there is a lot more effective and usable. If every color in a palette granulates you wind up with not only an overwhelming amount of texture.. you wind up with supergranulators when you mix (colors that not only separate but separate from each other). It's just an awful lot to try to balance in any cohesive way. I love my granulating paints but for the most part they are in a separate palette (exception is french ultramarine which is a standard in almost every palette for me) and are added with intention to a painting.. tree bark, rocks, cool macro backgrounds, etc. In this particular subject it would have been neat to use on his pants, and perhaps the ground.. but since that palette is almost entirely granulating obviously you have to go with what you have.

    • @briwidmerart
      @briwidmerart  2 роки тому +2

      I think granulation is a lot of fun to play with. I love using heavily granulating colors on nature scenes or with animals to imply texture. I paint a lot of really small birds and careful application of granulating paints implies feathers much more quickly and efficiently than I could without patient application of layers in a small space. I haven't bought into the super granulating lines - those are convenience mixes for the most part that are mostly made with either ultramarine, lunar black, or potter's pink.. so I can make my own 😊
      But yeah, since this is mostly granulating, it acts as a self-contained granulation palette like what you suggested, which I think is pretty cool. My main palette is mostly flat colors (even the ultramarine isn't granulating), but I do have some fun Daniel Smith ones I use when I want texture (like my birds or landscapes). I think this one will be fun to take out and about for grasses and trees and such 🥰

      @waymire01 2 роки тому +1

      @@briwidmerart I bought a couple of tubes of daniel smith granulating greens early on.. learned they are just mixes later. Didn't buy anymore or any of the schmincke super granulators.. invested in a 20 pan palette of single pigment granulating paints instead, choosing the best from several brands. I can mix anything, including colors none of them offer. One of my favorite combinations is potters pink/cerulean blue/buff titanium. Mix any two, or all three, and apply wet in wet. It comes out this soft delicate texture reminiscent of sandstone. Really nice for floral backgrounds, birds, etc., anywhere you want something that doesn't compete with the subject.

    • @briwidmerart
      @briwidmerart  2 роки тому +1

      @@waymire01 Interesting. I do have Potter's Pink and Buff Titanium but rarely use them for my own work. I'll have to give it a try. I think my favorite granulating color is Daniel Smith's Piemontite Geniune. It's a brown that has reddish undertones that I just find to be really really pretty. It treats me well in landscapes too. I also use a lot of Yellow Ochre, which is a more subtle granulation but I use it more just for a general earthy yellow rather than for its texture.

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 роки тому

      @@briwidmerart I love yellow ochre as well so much so I not only have it in every palette, I have it as my only yellow with limited palettes most of the time. Brands vary but most give a lovely warm glow in dilution without a ton of opacity.. and it just mixes so beautifully with other colors... and makes very natural greens. It's also very lightfast, and yellows are notoriously problematic for lightfastness... except for cad yellow which I've just never been a fan of, it always looks chalky to me especially in mixes.

      @@corbinkramer6228 Woah! That sounds like a lot of fun. I really do want to play with some RS paints 😊
      Oh right, so for skin mixes at least in the A Gallo, I use the quin gold, medici red, and azzurro (just a dot) to mix a base skin tone and then alizarin crimson and yinmn for shadows. Still experimenting but my normal is lots of warm yellow, some warm red, and a touch of blue to slightly desaturate the resulting orange.
