Drawtober 2024: Shapeshifter | Watercolor Sketchbook Session
Update: Milton has passed and we are okay.
Disclaimer: A lot of my Hurricane Milton talk is about my area. The impacts to the west coast of Florida will be devastating even at a Category 3, especially as Hurricane Helene cleanup is still underway. If you are not impacted and can donate, please consider looking at charities that can support victims of the recent storms in the Southeast (Helene and Milton). Please do not forget about the devastation left by Helene just because something newer came along - the recovery efforts will continue for some time yet.
Disclaimer 2: I will not tolerate denialist behavior and will delete any comments related to that rhetoric. People are hurting. People need help. End of story.

    Beautiful character and work, as always! I hope you made it through Milton ok. Helene was crazy, and though we got lucky here in southeast TN, everywhere around us was hit hard. Hopefully, your damage was minimal and the new roof work goes quickly! It's good to see you painting again.

      Thank you! So glad you're okay from Helene. She was such a nasty storm and so many people lost so much 😢 We did okay with Milton (phew!) Hopefully we're all in the clear now for the season.

    Love what you said about the denialist crap re Helene and rescue efforts. I live in GA and have many friends in NC. It is very real. Now with the new Hurricane in FL, this is insane. People make these denialist claims bc they don't live there and it doesn't fit into their political narrative and dont want to see what's reality here in the South. Many of these towns are just gone. Families are gone. Houses, neighborhoods, roads are gone and they are not getting relief or help fast enough. We live in terrible times. Hopefully change is coming and fast. Until then, I'll paint and distract myself. SMH

      I hope you and yours are doing well despite everything and get back to some semblance of normal soon. Seeing the devastation there and elsewhere hurt so much. I can't imagine losing my home, let alone my whole town. We should be helping each other, now more than ever.

      @@briwidmerart unfortunately I don't think it will happen anytime soon with all this political division. It's just so sad. People have lost everything and floods rarely if ever show up in that area of NC, so it wasn't second nature for people to get flood insurance. Just utter devastation. We are fine south of Atlanta, but I know many people were affected in other parts of the state. And we don't get hit that way in GA. It's FL that normally gets hammered.

      @jessicameisner8487 That... is ridiculous and I'm so sorry. A lot of my summer vacations growing up were camping and hiking in those areas and they deserve better for giving us such beautiful views... and the people deserve much, much better as well. We are in the cone. Luckily I'm on the east coast (Brevard County) so Milton will probably be down to a 1 here (though a 2 is in the warnings). Not going to be fun, but it could be far worse. We are shuttered, stocked, and as reasy as we can be. I have family that had to evacuate the west coast though. Glad they left, hoping their home tries its best and that recovery goes as well as possible.

    Beam paints participate in the painting more than commercial brands. It takes a different approach and I find it difficult switching between the regular and handmade styles of painting. It's a bit like the struggle when switching back to watercolours after painting in oils for 4 months. I find I have to give the paints the freedom to be themselves and negotiate the path to where I want the art to go. If I can do that, the painting turns out amazing. But if I ask them to behave like big brand watercolours, I'm never happy with the results. I can see why they aren't a great match for some painters. I feel lucky that beam was one of the first professional level paints I tried so I could adapt to them without expectation. Just sometimes, I still have trouble by the high pigment load when I paint daily. Haven't had much trouble with lifting, but maybe it's the paper or waiting longer between layers?

    • @briwidmerart
      @briwidmerart Місяць тому

      Excellent points! It's probably a sign that I should try a looser style of painting where I just let the watercolor flow and settle where it wants to and let it be ... show off its natural beauty. My overworking tendencies bite me here 😅 I will definitely work on that. Oh man switching back and forth between oils ... that's a big shift.

      The cochineal red was re-released as a tube with the retro packaging at the same time as this set, but sold separately. There's also the slightly thicker jewel box set that has a water tank built in for painting on the go, which comes with a more traditional split primary. I think Carmine is in that one.

    I do want to make a note about zoos/aquariums- not all are like seaworld. Many, like the San Diego Zoo, have set THE standard for how to do animal conservation and wildlife preservation- and if the Georgia aquarium's mission is to teach / help us understand how to care for our wildlife- they should be supported. Do your research on accreditations for zoos/aquariums and go support the ones that care! I see this rhetoric a lot online and find it puzzling as ethical zoos/aquariums are some of the only educated voices our wildlife has.

    • @briwidmerart
      @briwidmerart 3 місяці тому

      Very fair! The Georgia Aquarium is accredited and works in research, teaching, and conservation. I just still feel bad for such a large mammal to be so far inland, but I'm sure they would release them if they felt they would handle it well. Generally I'm pretty good about defending zoos because my local one does so much rehab/release and also breeding/releasing of endangered species. They just released a 375lb loggerhead turtle they helped 🥰 Sea World (Florida) also does rehab and release work, especially for manatees. Unfortunately not all of their animals have that freedom to be sent home 😞 So yes, you're absolutely correct and I appreciate you responding.

I wish they had replaced the Yellow Ochre with a cool red like Alizarin Crimson, or Rose Madder, or even their new Chochenille red. The Raw Umber is my favourite for painting blond hair. Perhaps just start a bit at a time when you can/ feel up to it, so it doesn't feel overwhelming? "harder to get back in the habit if I stop" pardon me while the video I have filmed but not edited looms over my shoulder

      You've been very busy so fully understandable to take a break to focus on more important things and also get rest 💙

    I love the texture that brush leaves and that lighting is *chef's kiss. When I saw the yellow at the beginning I was like...uh oh despite knowing it would turn out great 😆

      Thank youuu 🥰 I also felt that way about the yellow and I didn't know where I'd end up 😆

    I’ve started just leaving my oil brushes in a jar of safflower oil and wipe clean before the next session 😂 I clean them with Masterson’s soap and rinse with warm water once a week max. If I want to put more effort I’ll use conditioner to reshape.

      The oil doesn't cause any issues? 🤔 I know leaving brushes in water can degrade the glue holding the bristles in faster buuuuuut this sounds way more doable. Thank you! Time to get safflower oil...

    Beautiful painting. The stark lighting looks really good in your style. Is that Shadow Violet I see in the background? It looks great, whatever it is.

      Thank you so much! Most of the background is Venetian Red + Ultramarine Intense, which is both purple-y and granulating.. and then added some Shadow Grey to the second mix. Shadow Violet is super pretty and I may replace Shadow Grey with it in the future.

    The verbal loop about caulk proves I need time off 😅 I promise to make my next video more arty and less whatever this was 😆
