  • If you had a Neurological disease like stroke or spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury and your leg is flaccid or just flimsy and feels very heavy, then this video might help you.
After a neurological disease, sometimes one side gets hemiplegia and the arm or leg becomes flaccid or flimsy and you might not feel any muscle contraction or even sensation on that leg. The feeling you get is like you paralyzed on jist one side of the body. Sometimes it could just be one limb. In this video we will try to wake up that leg to facilitate muscle tone. We will be using fast tapping, brushing and even vibration to wake up that leg.
We will be on our bed or even laying on your couch in this video. You will need a long back scratcher or spatula, hairbrush, and some sort of device that vibrates preferably a massage gun.
The first area that we need to facilitate is our buttocks. Lie on your good side with the affected side on top. Place a pillow between your legs. Using a long back scratcher or a spatula, tap your buttocks or your glutes for about 30 seconds. Then try to move your leg down by sliding your thigh back from the pillow.
Next we will facilitate the muscles responsible in bending your knee. Tap your hamstring muscles for 30 seconds from closest to your knee going up to your buttocks. After 30 seconds, do your best to try to bend your knee backwards, the pillow will help you in sliding that knee.
At this point we won’t be facilitating your calf muscle because more than likely, your foot is already in that position and we don’t want to exacerbate plantar flexion. So we will be facilitating the front part of our leg this time. You will still be laying to your side. And push your leg down to make it straighter and to give you a better access to your hip flexors. Still use fast tapping, or brushing or fast vibeation on your thigh or your quadriceps muscles from closest to the knee going upwards to your hip. After 30 seconds try to slide your stroke leg or affected leg downwards and to the front. Is she back and try to do it one more time. Once you feel that your muscle is not responding or is already tired, just stop and rest.
The last area that we need to facilitate is the front of your lower leg. Avoid tapping or brushing the bony area. Look for the muscle to the side of that bone and outwards.
Tap that muscle from closest to the ankle upward to wards your knee. After 30 seconds, try your best to move your foot and toes upward towards your knee.
Try to do this techniques as many times as you can until you have more visible muscle contraction and movement on that leg. If spasticity is starting to develop and your leg becomes tighter, you can stop doing this method and practice controlling the finer movements of your leg.

Sometimes flaccidity lasts longer. Continue to try to wake up your leg buy doing these techniques. If you can, see your therapist and follow up with your neuro doctor for specific treatments

This is not for tight or spastic leg. I will stretch and mobilize a tight leg. I do have a video for drop foot. But if it is tight as well, you need to stretch it

Is it already stiff and tight? It might be spastic already. And it wont happen with just one session. The brain is the one injured after a stroke. Repetition is necessary
