In prison *anyone* can put themselves "on the numbers" (i.e. go to protection) for any reason. It doesn't mean your crime is truly terrible and you could do it simply because someone is threatening you. But people also do this to reach others, if you know what I mean. Go on protection and you can do them in.
And just because you're on a protection wing doesn't mean it's a massive party and everyone is best mates, not at all. Protection inmates can be utterly revolted by each others' crimes and will mete out their own justice. For example, Richard Huckle was murdered on a protection wing by another serial sex offender.

I’ve met a few former prisoners and they ALL agree that any crime against a woman, child or animal is the worst of the worst and that anyone who did one of these crimes is basically in for a bad time inside. Some of the former prisoners openly said they’d seen people beaten senseless, including one incident involving pool balls in a sock.

I did 19 1/2 months on a Marijuana cultivation case in California.
A new guy came into my dorm.
He had paperwork that showed he got an extra year for badly beating a child molester.
I was wealthy. He was poor.
I told him the combination to my locker and gave him carte blanche.
He took what he needed but never abused the privilege.
It was the least I could do
My youngest brother had committed suicide after being raped by two guys.
I am 74 and still cry every day in my heart.

My guess is. His lawyers next move will be to get him classed as insane. Think about. They got three years cut from his original sentence of 27 years. So he has around 21 years to go. At aged 39 he will be able to apply for parole.
In a few years he will no longer be able to stay in the young offenders institute. They will have to move him. In a man's prison he will have no chance of being able to to have a normal prison life if someone finds out what he did. He'll be on the protection unit. So his best bet is to go to Carstairs. A secure hospital for the criminaly insane.
That's what happened with the guy that killed all those kids and hid them on the moors. Ian Brady.

She lived near to the the local biker gang who knew her well and when he went to jail, as one of my dads friends told us later who was in, was metted special treatment involving barbed wire... I won't say what that means but he wasn't beaten with it. That guy has preventative detention here in New Zealand and 32 years later, it's probable he will die in prison...hopefully.

Fortunately or unfortunately, he has to be in there at least until he’s 40. By my math, he’s roughly 19-20 now. Even if he feels no true fear, those next 20 years will be very restrictive, which will drive him mad. Also, accidents happen all of the time. Guards are busy people. It’s normal to forget things every once in a while, like locking a murdering pedo’s cell. It could happen again.
