You missed gothic lolita, but be careful with this style as it has many rules and the community protects them like the wolf pack :p And recently gothic academia started to be a thing - darker version of dark academia, mainly for people who goes to the university or artists/scientists, it's also more about literature than music kind of goth, which places dark literature on the first place :) It theoretically grew out of the internet aesthetic, but I feel like it has a lot of potential, and it was around before this dark academia trend, but now it finally get the name. I think it's super important, because many of those people listen to classical music or do not like music at all, but the literature they are reading, their style and dark meetings in the cafes makes up for this. It has a lot to do with dark romanticism and writers like Novalis, Poe, Nerval etc. It's about admiration for genius and madness.
Gothic lolita really is just about fashion, it has no ties to music at all (some might say Visual Kei, but that's just because many vk bands wore gothic lolita, not the other way around!) and it's purely fashion based, like sweet, classic, and old school lolita.
The goth type thing started out as a joke in the 90's, and I think it's sad as hell that some people want to stick themselves into just one style box. I have been into both goth and punk music since the mid 80's and have always done my own thing. Being in a box is very limiting and stifles creativity. Also, you can wear what the heck you want and listen to whatever the heck you want without worrying about the music style matching your clothing style.
My styles are Victorian goth and nu goth mainly but sometimes I just wear cute spooky chill clothes or lounge clothes that aren’t goth or spooky at all. After watching the video I can say I have clothes in all these subcultures. I do not listen to classical music though but I listen to music that’s associated with these different subcultures.
@@purplejanew ya it wasn’t taken seriously from what i heard goths just dressed however they wanted regardless, when they showed up for the music. the styles just came abt bc of that. (i’m speaking in past tense bc i’m referring to the 80s-90s btw)
@@callmek5 Over here it was taken pretty seriously by most, there were some serious fashion icons coming out of The Blitz club and obviously other places as well. I suppose it depends on who you ask?
I am an asian Muslim who wears a hijab, really loves symphonic metal music. I don't care whether my outfit matches the goth music genre or not. all I know is my heart is black.
It's a music subculture we have Blackmetal Goth that's been around since the early eighties as well. Listen to Celtic Frost, Into The Pandemonium. Its Blackmetal goth, Listen to Celtic Frost Monotheist another Goth album. Early Mercyful Fate was Goth. Blackmetal should also be recognized as a part of the Subculture.
yes goth is definitely a music subculture, but to ignore all the other interests and style choices that go along with being any of the many types of goth does a disservice to all within the subculture, yes we have our music but we are so much more than ONLY the music 🖤
I know this is an older post, but it's great to finally see another person say this. Any subculture is a lot like a tree. Neither can survive without a variety of roots to help it survive the different seasons of life. And while everyone knows that Goth has a TON of flashy musical and fashion branches, it's weird that so many people will ignore the historical, economical and literary roots that has kept it healthy for 40 years.
@@DEATHBYFLYINGCDS I would never dismiss the impact that the music has had. But I wouldn't call it the trunk, as much as I would a massive branch. I don't think Goth would HAVE to die without it, but it would be a horrific loss. I just don't think it's right to dismiss other forms of expression, either. Goth is greater than the sum of its parts.
@@Whitby_Abbeys_Ghost It's a culture, not a person, it's nothing but the sum of it's parts, especially it's core values... Imagine the mongolian hordes without their horses, ancient egyptians without their gods... Goth without the music, could be a million different things, because a million different cultures share every other aspect. The only thing unqiue to goth is the music. Have you heard of Rivethead culture?
Thank you for this video. However, being an elder goth, we did all of these looks and listened to a variety of music especially when punk, new romantic and glam rock was at its peak in the 70s to 80s. Anyway, I did but we didn't have so many categories and it's nice to see this is still alive. So if I had to self-identify I'd be a trad romantic hippy/druiidic vamp.
I am a little bit of all the styles. Now that I am older I no longer have as many clothing styles but my music and interests are still varied. One day I listen to dark sanctuary while walking through graveyards, the next day I can be listening to industrial, noise, or darkwave. My foundation is Gothic Metal like Cradle of Filth and Tristania that started it all .
@@chameleon47 dark sanctuary is a metal band? Are you deaf? I didn't list all the bands I like. Cure and Bauhaus are on my list too. @@badcooper235 No, I am not deaf, thank you. Are you condescending? Yes, you are. The band name is "The Cure", not "Cure" and you did not list either The Cure or Bauhaus on your list. Nothing is nullified, but if the first bands that come to mind are metal bands, you are probably a metalhead, not a goth. Again, there is nothing wrong with this, other than perhaps your shitty attitude, which frankly betrays your musical tastes just as much as your initial list. Dark Sanctuary's first album was not metal, but the later stuff certainly was. The first album also was not goth, it was just cool. you can listen to whatever you want and nobody suggested otherwise. I’m a fairy goth who reads classic horror lit, decorates romantic goth, listens to Celtic, trad & goth metal music & other stuff and I wear pretty well all of the fashions at different times. Then sometimes I pretend to be normal & wear color & taupe colored shoes from Target so people will be nicer to me. It’s fun to try & categorize but I don’t think any goth fits in a box, if you know what I mean. We’re all so beautifully multifaceted!!💞🖤
I'm not a goth an an emo, but music has been my life since I was little, and I'm glad that people are getting the word out on how most alt cultures are music based. It's really sad how a lot of people just think it is an aesthetic
I definitely am a goth, I listen to goth music, I wear gothic, I for sure love my dark side but at the end of the day I'm a cupcake and sometimes even a pop song can get stuck in my mind. Wanna call me poseur? That'd be veeery funny. Just be yourselves 💜 Edit: to be clear, I'm sure that the content creator here wanted to show us the different inclinations and styles we can find in the history of the subculture, but no one has to stick with only one of them and in the same way you don't need to choose more than one. Just express yourself.
I am still very very new to the punk/rock/goth scene, but what I've already learned is that romantic and victorian goth are my favorite types. I mean, I love all of the types bc they're all beautiful and unique! But I study art history and the late Renaissance and romantic Era have always fascinated me. I'd love to wear romantic or victorian goth clothing while walking through an old, mysterious mansion, reading in old art history books, ...
How well have you been introduced to the music? because it's all too easy for babybats to overlook the music... Thus it is the duty for us adult and elder goths to provide a proper introduction
@@DEATHBYFLYINGCDS I've been listening to a few songs that probably count as gothic, but my music taste is open to pretty much anything. Do you have recommendations of specific bands/artists? I'd love to learn more!
@@caesarjg5304 Well of course there are the classics, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy.. I recommend watching the movie The Hunger since the beginning of the film is the music video for Bauhaus's Bela Lugosi's dead, and it's just an amazing vampire film... for some stuff that came post classic try some bands like The Cruxshadows, the Frozen Autumn, the Dead Can Dance.. Now if you want some bands that might be easier to start with, there are bands that skirt the border of gothdom or are just plain beloved by goths. For that we have bands like Depeche Mode, VNV nation (sorry if I'm going a bit nuts with this list I'm currently suffering from an aweful flu).... For some darker more electronic and industrial sounding stuff try Gary Numan post mid 90s, Blutengel, The Birthday Massacre. And then for more modern stuff there are bands such as The Angels of Liberty, Lebanon Hanover. Oh and here is the especially fun part of goth music, all these bands are still active, well ok, Siouxsie doesn't have Banshees anymore but I'm going to see her live in May regardless.. Hope this provides a decent start.. Oh one last musician so I already mentioned Bauhaus, but for me one of the things that got me started on goth music in the first place was the haunting guitar riffs of Daniel Ash, aka the Guitarist of Bauhaus, but who has done alot of stuff independent of Bauhaus, my favorite being "Burning Skies" by tones on tail...
if your into romantic and victorian goth (if you like the fashion specifically), you might also be interested in gothic lolita. Lolita fashion (based on victorian and roccoco era fashion) but with gothic elements. It's very cool
I grew up in religious communities where I was not able to really express myself or explore much. However, I’ve always been fascinated with romantic/Victorian goth styles! I think my favourite styles are all rather different, but I love, mediaeval/fantasy/fairy vibes, cottage, core, and goth!
This video gives me so much nostalgia, old Goth UA-cam videos were just like this naming all the styles of Goth, doing darkling tags and all that stuff like what Drac Makens used to do and ReRe Phillips! By the way I love your makeup especially and your hair!
I dressed goth in the 80's and have always loved the music mainly the trad bands. I moved away from dressing goth and dresses more hippie for years. Discovering hippie and fairy goth has me interested in the fashion again. My biggest problem is that I like lighter colours which don't fit the goth palate. So I'd have to either change or dye most of my wardrobe and I don't see that happening. I'd have to be a part time goth 😂.
I know this is an old comment but I wanted to note that you can wear whatever you'd like and still be goth. It's music based after all. ☺️ You can have a darker mindset (not in a depressive way) and enjoy your darker twist while throwing in whatever clothes you like. Maybe look into white goth/bubble goth/pastel goth/whimsigoth (which is a personal favorite of mine although my style mixes whimsigoth and romantic goth together) etc. Or just do your thing and don't categorize it, because at the end of the day, you are 100% unique and one of a kind!
Goth style isn't restricted to black clothes, tho. If you want some inspiration, look at Monster High dolls, they have many colors. It's like saying that a blonde person can't be goth either (even tho they usually dye heir hair, yes)...
In the 90’s, what you’re referring to as romantic goth was actually called ethereal goth. That label seems to have disappeared but occasionally you’ll find an “elder goth” talking about ethereal goth with a range of opinions about it.
I’m so glad you mentioned Faery Goth! I’m going to go research Hippie Goth, because it seems like a evolution of faegoth, and I would love to embrace that again :)
But this is totally bogus. Most of us like every type of goth music (dark post-punk, gothic rock, deathrock, darkwave, ethereal wave, minimal wave) and wear whatever we feel like, or whatever is most appropriate for the event we are attending. These "goth types" were created by goths in the 90s as a joke.
I like Corporate Goth. I like wearing vests, ties, and dress pants. I wear stuff like that everyday and when I'm out in public and stuff but not at work because I have to wear a uniform
Hey there, I'm not a Goth guy but I had a beautiful relationship with a Goth back in the day (I was a metal dude). Anyway funny how a small memory of her lands me here at this video. This was incredibly interesting to me and I really enjoyed it., YOU DID A GREAT JOB....
I’m a special micro-subgroup of Goth; I’m a multi-Goth! I mix ad match different styles in one ensemble- traditional Goth, geek Goth, cowboy Goth, industrial Goth, cyber Goth, etc. 🖤
I'm a full time labour worker goth with synthwave & ambient twist plus some Skinny Puppy added. I don't wear any make up though and I have super short hair. For piercing I sport a single small silver ear ring. I'm also in my 40's if it makes any difference.
Based on this subdivision I probably lean most into victorian goth but an emphasis on classical architecture and (dark) classical music, often church organ pieces
What a wonderful, gothically cheerful video, thank you. I came here directly from a video that basically said the exact opposite; "there are no subgenres. Goth is Goth!" Personally, i fit into 3 or 4 by nature; Romantic, Victorian, Vampire, & Corporate. My personal style is a mix of these. I am fascinated by poetry, calligraphy, graveyards, the occult, & of course, bones. Musically, i listened to Depeche Mode & Gary Numan when i was a teen, but i also love Nightwish, Symphonic Metal, & of course, I am most at home with Classical music; especially 17th-19th centuries. As for people who say, "Don't put yourself in a box..." mine are rosewood, with brass adornments, & lined with sumptuous crimson satin. I'm very comfortable there, thanks.
I am a combination of Elder Goth, Goth Metal, Vampyre Goth, Punk, etc., with a emphasis on the Left Hand Path (Satanism, Luciferianism & Sinisterism). I been studying the Goth Subculture since the mid to late 1980s, to the present, walked the Left Hand Path since 1995 & it has been over 28 years on the LHP. Infernal Greetings & Salutations Everyone!!! 😈🧛🏿♂️
I just love these videos. People don’t expect me to be the type to listen to the music because I don’t dress it but my antiques and room decor is (at times)… and sometimes mixed with some kawaii lol. Either way, my grandma was born in the 50s and a lot of my style/personality is from her 😆 she can be hella morbid. Glad we got to share these similarities incl dark humor. She loves horror books, films and oldies music. I love everything but the gore and horror films.. My interest for “gore” is from a science perspective (phlebotomy, medicine, etc) and even then I don’t wanna see or know too much bc I’ll get queasy.
Hello Ms Destructiv333! I have a question; what is your stance on the whole mall goth thing, I personally love a lot of the alternative metal bands and stuff that were labeled as mall goth, I acknowledge that it isn’t really tied to the goth subculture’s history, but do you know what subculture it actually is or a different label for it? I also love the fashion for the 90s mall goth stuff too it’s very beautiful.
@@lnbni I am so glad that I was already in my 20's when the whole mall goth thing happened in the late 90's because in the late 80's/very early 90's my friends and I would go to a local mall to hangout because there was literally nowhere else to socialize if you were under 21. You could go to Denny's but that required money. Going to the mall and sitting in air conditioning was free. Lots of people from different subcultures would go there. My BFF and I were into both goth and punk music and looked like it. It's funny but I met quite a few hardcore punks there. This was all before Hot Topic. The only store in that mall that catered to us was Contempo Casuals, which was a nationwide chain of clothing stores that carried very weirdo friendly clothes and the quality was really good. I had a bracelet from there that lasted over 20 years and they sold really nice crushed velvet leggings. I think it is kind of strange that teens have latched onto the whole mall goth thing, because of the history of the term.I was a goth in a mall, not a mall goth. LOL
I relate to all of these things except the cyber goth. I listen to all the music and my interests are very dark and morbid, but it's silly how Goth I am without even completing knowing it until now but I am excited to start dressing how I feel inside
Wow, that sounds extremely familiar! LOL. When Goth started in the 80's it was simple; you listened to the music that reflected your melancholic mood and dressed in kind. You usually liked darker themed movies and read dark novels. Why? Because that was the way that we felt, how we coped and pushed back at a bleak, hopeless non caring no-future society. It was a form of rebellion. During that post punk time in history, we were primed and ready for it. It was that way back in 1982 when I was a young man, and now for me at almost 60, it's still that way. It's become far more complicated than it needs to be. Goth is a state of mind. Wearing black and listening to Goth music doesn't make you a Goth or Gothic. The music and the genre was birthed out of the state of mind that those who would become Gothic we already in. Ever notice that Joy Division never looked like a Goth band but was instrumental in kicking off the genre? It was because they were already a melancholic group of guys to begin with. Heck, 42 years ago Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, took his own life. After battling severe depression, Curtis died on May 18, 1980. He was just 23 years old. Listen to the song "Love will tear us apart again". In some instances Goth was the only entity that understood us. Now it seems to have become a mere fashion statement. Anyway, just my .50 cents worth. LOL.
I agree with this completely. I also remember that some of the bands like Bauhaus did not like that "goth" term. They liked "dark glam" and when doing "bela legosi's dead" Peter thought "sing like an evil David Bowie." also Nico. Robert Smith was always joking about goth. Personally, I refuse to be labeled, but I know what I love.
Goth is a music genre and a subculture based on that music genre. The only "state of mind" is that which is created by listening to goth music, and is drawn to this music. Just listening to a goth band or two does not make one goth, but loving goth music above all other forms certainly does. Joy Division was instrumental in starting several types of music. Like The Jesus and Mary Chain based their entire sound on "Ceremony." I forget which song it is that was proto-darkwave. Guess I will just have to listen to all of their stuff again. Oh, the horror.
A big influence of Faerie goth is Emilie Autumn btw. A lot of faerie goth events will have her music playing at some point. Especially "Ms Lucy had some Leeches" as a fun little ice breaker. Another big one is they read "A Midsummer Night's Dream" "The Faerie Queene" "Wicked Holly" "The Iron Fey" "Tithe" and likely read a lot of Celtic mythology in general. Riddles and games tend to be very popular too. Think of the Gollum from lord of the rings type riddle games. Being morbidly witty and quick to respond is part of the fun. You are trying to embody some sort of dark trickster that likes to listen to "that creepy circus music" as my mom called it growing up. Oh and Alice in Wonderland. Also important.
Great video, keep em coming. Kinda shocked that everyone's being so nice so far. I've known many "Elitist Goths". I'm sure we all known at least one who claims they did EVERYTHING first.
Vampire stems from Goth but has become it's own thing -some time ago- consisting of people who strongly identify as or cosplay as vampires. Even going as far as "feeding" in blood weather psychically or through donors. There are clubs and members do have to take regular blood test from what I understand. The asthetic is still Goth, but it's definitely evolved into it's own community over the years. Just wanted to through that out there 😉 Love the video and awesome makeup btw ✨
@@stephenspark776 You not seeing it does not mean it did not happen. It is easy to see, especially if you were there to see it, as I was. Vampire peaked in the early 2000s, after goth clubs were basically dead, and all of the former goth clubs were playing primarily industrial/EBM/nu-metal with a splash of goth here and there, and the clientele were more rivetheads and metalheads than goths. The people who wore fangs etc. were primarily rivetheads and metalheads who thought they were goth because they don't understand music genres. Simply following the timeline makes this easy to determine. Regardless of your thoughts on "goth to vampire" being a logical progression, and regardless of if it actually IS a logical progression, the fact remains that this is not how it occurred. The vampire subculture actually arose from the increased popularity of Anne Rice in fans of industrial/EBM music. I literally watched it happen. Ask any elder goth, they will tell you the same. "I don't see how you can determine that. Each person will come to it in their own way. Goth to Vampire is a pretty logical progression."
I only realized I listen to Goth music recently, My dad raised me on Siouxsie and the banshees and Fields of the Nephilim. He was a teen in the 80s and was a Trad Goth when he was young. He's always been my Brother and I's biggest supporter with Alt fashion styles. Nowadays he's a corporate man, Heavily tatted to the extremes though. He still blasts Goth Rock music sometimes though.
Thanks for going through the many kinds of Goth clothing and all amazing fashion ..I have just been invited to a goth music night ..and not sure what to expect ..now I at least know a bit .great video .
How did you start to become interested in goth culture? Do you have other goth friends irl that share that interest or did you just immerse yourself Into it by yourself?
I listen to a lot of gothic and industrial music and I don't always dress full goth but sometimes I do. I'd say the hippie goth style is probably my personal fav out of these, I share the fascination with witchcraft and 60s culture.
I’m new to your channel and this video is super good. I’m so glad that you mentioned different circles in the goth community. I consider myself a Victorian goth so it’s nice to see it mentioned. You have a new subscriber 🦇
That is the greatest weakness of all zombies - they are easily confused. Hence they have to operate in hordes. But once on the march... or shuffle... they are a force to be reckoned with. I fear that the effects of climate change and the descent of Eternal Night means we shall be seeing a lot more of your sort!
Hi! i have a question because i’ve started to really take a liking mostly to the goth clothing style and i was wondering if i would still be able to dress in goth clothing without wearing makeup, not having piercings and having blonde hair. I don’t want to it be wrong to wear the goth clothing style with that, i just want to be sure before i start looking for things to look like the goth style :)
Oh I heard some peoples are don’t like part of music. I love part of gothic fashion clothes. I don’t like colors they wear. They are different types of gothic fashions. Thank you very much for being talking about this. I graduate high school in 1984. It’s very nice to hear. One more thing pastel goth and vampire. 👍😊😘🤟🏾🖤🖤🦇💀🕸️📱
According to chameleon47, you'd better keep within that 90% threshold or you'll be degothed! You'll become one of the Ungoth. The Supreme Council of Goth Gatekeepers has decreed it, apparently.
@@stephenspark776 Again, is this intentional straw-manning or are you just have a major comprehension issue? The "90%" was intended as just a rough figure, to point out that simply listening to The Cure does not make one goth. Nor does dressing goth. Loving goth music is the single and only thing that makes one goth. Just like loving metal is what makes one metal, loving punk rock makes on a punk rocker, and so on. Like skating is what makes one a skater, not wearing Thrasher tees. If someone listens to one or two goth bands, but most of what they listen to is not goth, they are not goth. They may be "alt" or just highly eclectic, either of which is cool too. What makes one a member of ANY music-based subculture is being a huge fan of the respective music type. Again, this is not that difficult. Ridiculous statements like "you'll be degothed" only come from ignorant kids who don't understand subcultures. The only way to be "degothed" is if you somehow just stopped liking the music, because again, goth is a music-based subculture, the single requirement which is to love goth music. "According to chameleon47, you'd better keep within that 90% threshold or you'll be degothed! You'll become one of the Ungoth. The Supreme Council of Goth Gatekeepers has decreed it, apparently."
Woot Woot! I'm an "Elder Goth" according to this video....I still love my Ian Curtis and Sisters of Mercy. Hands up for Class of 1989. Actually went to a Classic Goth nite in NYC a few weeks ago. It was amazing being around in the 80's. My advice: Woolite Dark detergent and buy your clothes at thrift stores. Also never try to go from dyed back black hair to blonde.....it'll turn green and fall out.
The type of Goth I am is quite different and gets hated on by Goth Elitists due the main genre I listen to. I'm a Metalhead Goth. I listen to Gothic Metal mainly and dress like a typical metalhead, but with a gothic twist. Basically like a mix of Type O Negative and Vision Video's fashion. (I do listen to other types of gothic music as well though such as Vision Video, The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy, etc.)
I'm honestly attracted to romantic goths due to their creativity and cinema taste im glad I watched this video because I couldn't differentiate the different subcultures and as a 20 yr old non goth guy I'm trying to learn more about the culture because I've always been fascinated with dark and spooky things I remember as a kid I used to fold paper and cut out bats(I was and still am to this day a batman fan) and I also like the gothic atmospheres in terms of buildings and construction overall it's just a really interesting culture
Nice to find someone who's into bats and buildings. From about age 12 my dad used to take me into the City of London on a Sunday, when it was deserted, and we'd wander round all these old railway stations and market halls, many of which were about to be knocked down for redevelopment. Many were in the Gothic style that was so popular in the 1860s and 1870s, and were crumbling, black with soot, and pock-marked from wartime shellfire. They were really eerie even in daytime. That, combined with old Hammer horror films, with their slow-moving bats (you could see the wires!), probably got me into whole horror/mystery/gothic frame of mind, which is finally finding expression in a first novel about a late-Victorian Romanian vampire in Surrey, bent on revenge but finding herself having to cope with 21st-century technology (she mostly just disables it, to the despair of her tech-dependent human companions) and being an 'undesirable alien' in a foreign country. I am strongly pro-vampire and pro-bat, so the book is being written from their POV.
Great job, i was born in 1960, in high school and college, i would have fit into the trad goth category, i came out at that time and a lot of that music was playing in a few gay clubs, however most were Disco's but a few catered to the darker side, we kind of blended in with the leather community! Great job!
you forgot the Pastel Goth🩷🖤 but I don't think music would have to deal with being Goth🤔 i think u can still look goth & listen to what ever let everyone express them self I love this vid & Love All of theys Goth styles I incorporate all of them 😍 my fav is probably Corporate Goth i fall 4 Gothz in suit stuff men/women 🖤 but i dress a little Goth with my normal wear. I Also think your Goth look is pretty 🙂👍🏻
I definitely can't identify as full time goth or a proper goth, but I like Gothic Metal. And def office goth elements here. Love the little black dress and bolero combination.
Unfortunately gothic metal is a bit of a trap.. It's not actually a goth music genre, despite the name,... That just means that it's time to show you all the options that are available to you out there.. are you readY?
Great Video! I'm so glad you realize that goth is a MUSIC based subculture, unlike some goth UA-camrs who say it's "whatever you make it out to be". Nope! It's all about the music 🖤
I know it’s about the music, but look really touches my “Death Positive” side. Your look is beautiful. Not Goth but I love the head space it puts me in.
First of all, I applaud you for taking the time & interest in looking all of this up and finding pictures to tag on. And I think you have a great UA-cam video personality. Keep rocking! Moving on, so gothic clothing didn't start in the late 70s/early 80s, it was, however, trendy at that time. Furthermore, punk and rock goth styles were born with that genre of music, which also reflected current events. What's really interesting about gothic style is it evolves with the current events. For example, the Middle Ages were a period that began at the end of the Fall of the Roman Empire. Many civilizations were trying to rebuild their economies, and lift their spirits, after hundreds of years of war. During that time gothic architecture was extremely popular and mimicked the rigid policies, gothic art mirrored the emotions & phoenix rising out of the ashes -esque scenery, and gothic clothing reflected the available materials mixed with social or anti-social constructs, emotions, creativity, etc. I love it! I'm certain there was gothic before then but I haven't found any documents about it. I can imagine a prehistoric, tribal goth! If that's not a thing I really want to make it one!
From an 80s Elder Trad Goth, you pronounced "Bauhaus" perfectly...Or as perfectly as any American pronounces the word for a German arthouse movement from the 1920s which was later used as a Goth band name.
Jesus christ this whole time i convinced myself i was nü goth but hearing this i take inspiration from every subculture, just a huge melting pot of music culture, attire, interests, etc Thank you for opening another eye 😊🖤
You forgot Steampunk goth or Steamgoth. I’m a Victorian goth and a steampunk. I love the Victorian aesthetic. Also I’m an obsessed Alice in wonderland and science fiction fan. So I guess I fit the steampunk cliché? No I don’t just wear brown 🙄. Or black for that matter. I wear both with other colors. I listen to all of the bands you mentioned and old punk bands but mostly classical music. I’m also a devoted Abney Park fan. I make or modify just about everything. I collect antiques and make Victorian dresses. I’ve been into all of this since the mid late 80’s so I guess I’m an elder goth? Or elder steampunk? Whatever?! Too many labels! I think the main things are music + fashion and DIY or modify make it your own. Oh and yes I drink tea from an antique tea set. If anyone has an issue with this I challenge you to a Tea duel!
What you wear is irrelevant. Goth is a music-based subculture. If you don't listen primarily to goth music, you are not goth- you are just into fashion. None of these are gothic styles, btw. These styles were all made up as a joke in the 90s by goths making fun of people. Steampunk is a fashion/art-based subculture, and thus does not fall into the goth category, as goth is music-based.

@@chameleon47 What a sweeping statement that all the styles were simply created as a joke. That must be the most elaborate, widespread and expensive sartorial set of jokes in history! To dismiss all those choices as simply a joke is quite offensive IMHO. survivalinwonderland5277 made clear that she listens to "all of the bands...mentioned [in the video]", most of which are/were goth bands. So she's obviously not "just into fashion". Too much gatekeeping is bad for the soul, however dark that soul may be...
I like your Beetlejuice poster. "Daylight come and they want to go home!!!" Actually I believe the Gothic Era started in the Victorian Era! A lot of Black and Red Clothing. Music has nothing to do with the emotions inside the human brain though.
I was in a small high school, and there were a handful of "Goth" types in the last half of the '80s. I have never heard of goths being into the music of Victor Herbert. I was a bit of an eccentric L7 in H.S.
I feel like I’m a mix of a bunch of goth subcultures. I love Evanescence, Within Temptation, Nightwish, etc. I don’t really think “romantic goth” fits how I dress though. I call myself a nerd goth. I love horror movies, comic books, anime. I kinda just do my own thing ✌🏻
None of the bands you mentioned are goth. If these are your favourites, you are not goth. That doesn't mean you aren't cool, just not goth. Evanescence is alternative rock, and Within Temptation and Nightwish are symphonic metal. None of them are goth.
@@chameleon47 I agree a lot of people think Evanescence are goth when they aren’t, the problem is Wiki has categorised them as goth rock, when that’s not the case 🙈 I don’t know the other two bands.
@@Blackmoth-33 Nightwish and Within Temptation are both symphonic metal- which wikipedia has correctly stated. Evanescence are a handful of genres, and wiki lists both bands in part as "gothic metal" which is what confuses metalheads. They basically think that an orange cat is the same as an orange, and/or do not understand adjectives vs. nouns. It is pretty simple, really- if there are a handful of genres listed, and any of them are "metal", the band is metal, not goth. The single exception I know of is Fields of the Nephilim, but this is because they started as gothic rock and ended up playing metal years down the road. Other than that, every band listed as metal and also gothic rock, is just metal- and the band members wear black and/or heavy eyeliner. 😂 Type O Negative is the most often mistaken-for-goth band, even though they are so clearly metal. If I go a week without someone arguing with me about this, this was a week without social media. Wikipedia gets a few other bands wrong, such as HIM and one Marilyn Manson album- both listed as "gothic rock", and this is due to the same ignorance of music genres being present in writers- as wikipedia just cites any published source and considers it good. So one ignorant writer who has no clue what goth is- calls a band goth/gothic rock in a magazine/online article- and wiki considers that a reliable source. A friend of mine pointed out that non-musicians tend to perceive a band's genre based upon their appearance, whereas those of us who are musicians tend to base a band's genre on their music. You know, the thing that actually determines a genre. 😂 It isn't that hard. It is mind-numbing how people cannot HEAR the difference between metal and gothic rock, but this stems from a lack of knowledge that gothic rock is actually a genre, with its own sound and lineage. Anyhow, always puts a smile on my face to hear from someone who can grasp that Evanescence sounds nothing like any goth band.
You missed gothic lolita, but be careful with this style as it has many rules and the community protects them like the wolf pack :p
And recently gothic academia started to be a thing - darker version of dark academia, mainly for people who goes to the university or artists/scientists, it's also more about literature than music kind of goth, which places dark literature on the first place :) It theoretically grew out of the internet aesthetic, but I feel like it has a lot of potential, and it was around before this dark academia trend, but now it finally get the name.
Thank you so much!
Wow, thanks, I think that's right up my alley 😄😄😄
Gothic lolita really is just about fashion, it has no ties to music at all (some might say Visual Kei, but that's just because many vk bands wore gothic lolita, not the other way around!) and it's purely fashion based, like sweet, classic, and old school lolita.
gothic lolita isn't part of the goth subculture it's part of the lolita subculture
^ gothic lolita isnt part of the goth subculture that came out of the 80s but it was inspired by the aesthetics of it
The goth type thing started out as a joke in the 90's, and I think it's sad as hell that some people want to stick themselves into just one style box.
Being in a box is limiting to you, it seems, but my neurodiverse brain thrives on rules, no matter how loose they are. Different strokes.
A joke?

You don't need to match the music you like. All that matters is that you enjoy your music.
You can wear a black hijab n cool boots
Yes, but you could always wear black or do makeup also. Thats what makes this genre actually such an involvig community

I am a little bit of all the styles. Now that I am older I no longer have as many clothing styles but my music and interests are still varied.

3:34, Goths aren't always depressed. They are often happy 😊
Yes but she meant that that’s a goth stereotype :)
Theres pastel goth too
@I'm that girl again yt yes that's true.
Hippie Goth here, you forgot one veeeery important part out......

These "goth types" were created by goths in the 90s as a joke.

Mall goth was actually an insult, a term for poser goths who hung out at malls and hot topic, I think it's funny that people wanna be that now
@@lnbni yeah I know :) just was curious about her stance on it
@@lnbni I am so glad that I was already in my 20's when the whole mall goth thing happened in the late 90's because in the late 80's/very early 90's my friends and I would go to a local mall to hangout because there was literally nowhere else to socialize if you were under 21.

Like The Jesus and Mary Chain based their entire sound on "Ceremony."
I forget which song it is that was proto-darkwave.

You describe the types so lovely and beautiful 🖤
How did you start to become interested in goth culture? Do you have other goth friends irl that share that interest or did you just immerse yourself Into it by yourself?
I was immersed into it mostly by music my boyfriend showed me a few years ago!
I love your videos!!! 🖤🖤🖤
Things like this confuse me. Fuck it, I am a zombie. Who's down to join the horde 😂
I’ve been a goth since 1992. I’m enjoying your UA-cam.
I got into goth in 1998 I transfered over from wicca & skateboarding as fell
I'm sad being goth got 2 exspecive so I had 2 stop with the nail paint make up fishnets leather fetish ware & dying my hair 😢
You still goth. :)
I was yesterday years old when I discovered white goth which is kinda like light academia but for goths
She said Ram-steen 🤣
You can listen to whatever other music and still be goth.
To an extent, yes. But if 90% of your music is not goth, you are probably not goth.
The Supreme Council of Goth Gatekeepers has decreed it, apparently."
you're so gorgeous i'm cryinggg
Green-head Goth - I think you could be starting a new sub-sb-genre...
Loving typo at the moment!!
Nice video thanks. I'm a Celtic style Goth but I used to hang out in clubs with the CyberGoths from the video. I miss those days.
I really appreciate the goth subculture. Thank you for teaching us.
The way she said Rammstein >>>
Me as a German hehe
I started becoming a baby Goth back in the 1980s. Still am one today.
I LOVE UR LAUGHH, ITS SO ADORABLE and also thank you for this video! i know which type i am now
I know it’s about the music, but look really touches my “Death Positive” side.
In Wisconsin we pronounce bauhaus pretty well, probably due to our strong german heritage
i love cyber goth tbh- i want their hairstyle:P
Yesss it’s so cool isn’t it!
@@destructiv333 yes!! i’m gonna ask my mom if she’ll let me do it!
Love all the styles
Jesus christ this whole time i convinced myself i was nü goth but hearing this i take inspiration from every subculture, just a huge melting pot of music culture, attire, interests, etc
Thank you for opening another eye 😊🖤
Your sound is so satisfying
Thank you for talking about the music.
Your eye make up is🔥🔥🔥🔥
thanks for taking the time to make this wonderful video. Raven
On my community you can see an Italian coverbook of “Alice in wonderland”, maybe you like it 😊
What you wear is irrelevant.
@@chameleon47 Okay Mr. Goth Gatekeeper🙄. This is what I listened to today:

I’ve been doing this whole “goth”thing since the 1980’s. And if any baby bats 🦇 read this don’t listen to people that say you can’t listen to other music or have other interests and be goth. Hope my playlist from today helps you find good music. P.S. Steampunk is a literature based subculture and it’s a lot of fun. Also one can be steampunk and goth.
@@chameleon47 I really fear that when my time comes, I'll find someone like you at the gates of Hell enforcing an effing dress code!
@@chameleon47 What a sweeping statement that all the styles were simply created as a joke. That must be the most elaborate, widespread and expensive sartorial set of jokes in history! Don't you understand that people are CREATIVE and want to tweak an aesthetic in their own ways, to reflect their own interests, their own lifestyles? To dismiss all those choices as simply a joke is quite offensive IMHO.
survivalinwonderland5277 made clear that she listens to "all of the bands...mentioned [in the video]", most of which are/were goth bands. So she's obviously not "just into fashion".
Too much gatekeeping is bad for the soul, however dark that soul may be...
2:35 what about type o negative?
Type O Negative is the most often mistaken-for-goth band, even though they are so clearly metal.
It isn't that hard.
Love your "Bettie Page" fringe.
Thinking of starting a Jedi Goth style ,scifi in black
@@cyan_the_uranian it's more sci-fi and follows star wars lore I guess.
I guess I'm a mix of all of these.
You mean you are someone who just dresses however TF you feel like? Congrats! Me too!
(These styles were created by goths as a joke in the 90s)
@@chameleon47 haha!
Enjoyed your viewpoint and commentary. I get the impression that "goth" can serve as a filter over different expressions of fashion and lifestyles.
