See you there! 👋
😁 Happy Watching!! 🎉
Sunny Side of the House? But everywhere you go in the house Anne-Laure is Sunny because of your bright and cheery demeanor!! Thanks for the video...good tips!
Haha, Jason, you surpass yourself with each new comment!! 🤣 😝 😁 Be careful of high expectations!!!! 😜
Thank you so much! 😌 😃
My parrot watches these videos with me & he cheerfully giggled through the whole presentation. He was apparently delighted with your tips, as was I.
🤣 😃 What?!!!! 😂😍 What a comment, that's so adorable, Eilidgh!!! 😃❤️ I should print it and put it besides my bed to make me laugh and cheer me up on my bad mornings!!! 🤣 (maybe I will do it for real 😛) Thank you so much for sharing, that's just so cute and funny!! Can I have a photo of you and your parrot watching my videos?!!! 😝 What's his name?!
I just read your comment to my Patreons in the last short video clip I shared, it's so memorable!! 😃 See you my dear, a hug to you and a hug to your friend! 😁
His name is Petey (although he refers to himself as "sweetheart" & I hand raised him from a little chick & have had him 34 years. He's a double yellow headed Amazon. He's very particular about what he likes to watch & he particularly likes your videos. He doesn't seem interested in any other art videos. He also loves bagpipe music and jazz (I don't know why jazz but he was raised with bagpipe playing). I don't know how to post his picture watching you, but I did take one and posted to your Twitter account.
This is so funny and crazy (really in a kind of "Alice in Wonderland" quirky spirit!!!! 😝)!! Haha " He refers to himself as "sweetheart"" 😂 I can tell Petey is pretty special and he has good taste!! 😯 😁 We have not so far from the same age, I am almost 38. 😊 😉 So, are you Scottish living in the US? 😊 It was a really good idea to share the photo on Twitter, Thank you so much!! It made me really happy to see him with the screen and your lovely sleeve. 😉 What a shame that I can't see you! 😉 I thought maybe I should ask my subscriber to send me some special photos of themselves watching my videos like yours, it's really something! Btw your Petey portrait is just stunning, congrats!!! I hope things will be more relaxed for you now, after the hurricane. See you! 😘
So cute! My cockatiel, Chico, was actually sitting on my shoulder watching Anne-Laure's video too. He seems to enjoy watching videos and TV. haha
Sorry I wasn't able to include myself but I'm a bit camera shy- Petey is much more photogenic than I am. I'm half Scottish (born in Edinburgh) but live in NC. I showed Petey more of your videos & he giggles through all of them. Doesn't happen with Marc Taro Holmes, Suma CN, Stephanie Bower, or Shari Blaukopf....just you. Petey is certainly very discriminating about the things he likes! :)
Youre a teacher every art student need!! Thank you for the videos!! Really help a lot^^
Everything explained so sweetly I loved your video
Best video I’ve found to really help!!! Thank you!
Excellent advice. There are some really good phone apps too that can help. I frequently use CS CamScanner which is really easy to use and will auto crop to the page edges and correct the parallax at the same time. "Snapseed" is an excellent photo editor for smartphones that has extensive image adjustment, parallax and crop features, and this is what I use if I need higher quality results. Most cameras and smart phones also allow you to select a framing grid, viewfinder overlay and this can really help to square the shot and reduce parallax.
Thanks a lot for your comment, Peter! Yes, my editing tutorial will be using Snapseed, you can do everything with it, that's dope!! 😁
'to put it on every platform on planet earth!' I love your way of speaking, Anne Laure! And your energy, inspiration and gift of teaching art! :) Thank you!
Very nice tips, thanks for sharing 👍
Oh boy I do all those bad angle shots, at night under electric light usually with my sketchbook on my lap... you've given me a LOT to think about to try to improve my photos. Thanks for the tips great video 😄👵🏼🎨
Haha, Elaine, you're my best "client". 😁 😜 😘 I really hope you will see the difference with your next photos. 😃
wonderful tips to keep in mind, and so beautifully presented --- merci beaucoup!~!
Thank you! Useful tips!
Very helpful, thank you so much & God bless you :)
Excellent video, as always!! Especially the way you showed the light on the one painting in two different parts of the house, that was an eye opener, I never realized that before, huge difference, very helpful. Thank you for another great video and for sharing your knowledge with others. :)
Hi Aneta, Thanks a lot! I am so happy the video was helpful and eye opening!! I really hope you will see an improvement in your photos. Please tell me! 😃
Great video, i cant see passion and love in it.
Thank you!! it worked for me!
Thank u for your hard work
Hello from India... This is one of THE BEST videos I have ever seen on this topic. I really appreciate how well you have explained each and every little thing. Even the editing of art pictures is great. Thank you so much for all the amazing information and keep up the great work :*
So hard to get good lightning! Thanks for the tips!
Yeah, it takes a bit of experience Glenda but I am sure you will get it, Glenda ! 👍
I really like all your videos, keep on making more videos. 😊
so necessary to me your advices, have a grate day!
This content is superb!
Thank you for these tips. Some things I had not thought about.
Thanks so much for this video. I usually finish my paintings at night and take the photo late at night and this is a good reminder not to do that.Taking a good photo is so important as to not detract from the art.
Yeah, for sure, that's so difficult to resist but we have to!! Electric light is really a no no and spoil the colors a lot. You can't really correct it well with the edit. At some point, I was following someone on Instagram that was, I think, shooting all here photos at night. I ended up unfollowing her, unfortunately, as the watercolor seemed great but the photos were not inspiring at all so all the benefit of the sharing was lost... Don't worry about doing it once in a while if you can't resist but try to wait for daylight most of the time. 😊 😘
Great video! I was just thinking that I would love to learn more about photography as well. But I do much enjoy all your content!
Merci beaucoup, vos explications sont concrètes et très claires! Et votre sympathie crève l’écran! 😊
i came to learn how to paint, but i do like to share my work on social media. this was informative and fun!
Thank you Miss Jamee! I am glad you get interested by the video! I really want to provide to you additional content that can be relevant with painting too but in a wider sense, as our art is richer, more creative and more creative when we learn about getting a wider creative mindset and more interest about all kind of art. 😊
Thank you for the wonderful tips, I can't wait to try them!!😊
So many great tips, merci beaucoup Anne-Laure :)
Very very very helpful
Always helpful and something very useful to learn. Thank you!
Iris, Thanks a lot! 😘 😊
Great video, Anne-Laure! On my phone camera, I have it set to always show 'grid-lines' as this helps to line up the edges of sketchbooks/paper too. I have my grid dimensions divided into three so the lines also cross where I can place the 'focal' point of a scene if I want to...not so necessary with art though.
Pls support my work
Great video. I already knew the theme, but I thought it was really cool to organize it. And I enjoyed to enjoy your sketches and watercolors that are very beautiful. Hugs!
Thanks Raro, yeah, some things are always a good reminders. 😊 Thanks for your your compliments about my art! 😃
Excellent pointers! I wish my watercolors were as good as my photos of my watercolors! I like to use some cool apps on my iphone to correct some of my lighting issues and every once in a while I play with filters and other controls to make either a mash up of two watercolors. It's so much fun to see what happens! Enlight is a really good application for blending things. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and talent!
Haha, good funny point Marisa!! 😅 But I am sure you are too hard on yourself. 😉 Which app are you using on your phone, in addition to Enlight (I don't know it, I have to check!)?!
My upcoming tutorial will be with Snapseed. 😊 Thanks for your kind comment!, see you! 😘
Camera+ and PhotoStudio are two others i use.
Good to know, thanks Marisa! 👍 😊 Have a good day!
Thank you!
Thank you for so many wonderful videos! I have been frustrated when taking photos of my work at night under a full-spectrum (daylight) lamp. In particular, orange tones are dulled. Based on your advice, I will try using direct natural daylight and the area just outside of it. I also have a flatbed scanner, and have found that although the light is extremely bright, it is not evenly distributed across the page. Colors are not true either. I suppose adjustments could be made to the software, but I’d rather be painting!
What about shooting indoors (say, when it’s too windy for outside), but the windows have an UV filter or tint?
I’d also like to recommend another parallax-adjusting app, TurboScan. It has another wonderful feature: it can take three consecutive photos, and then digitally combine the best areas into the ultimate image. Great if your hands are not super steady when taking photos!
Your video was really good and helpful. I often struggle to get good photos of my work, and I have even considered buying a scanner. 😂 I will be looking forward to the next video on editing. Thanks for taking the time to give these tips.
Thanks a lot for your feedback and compliments Carol. 😊 I really hope these advices will help! 😃 I would buy a scanner if I was making a watercolor book, for example, but to post on social media, it would seem to me to be a bit of a pain in the *ss lol, you know having to handle the computer and the scanner, rather than just taking the photo with your phone to upload it from your photo. Maybe it depends on your phone quality as well, though...
See you!! 😘
You are right. I actually purchased my last phone based on the camera quality, and I am very happy with it. I have to learn to be PATIENT and wait for the daylight to take photographs. My day job does not usually allow me to have time to do things not work related in the middle of the day, so I have to wait for the weekend. :)
This information is very helpful will make a huge improvement to photographing my paintings. I would love to know more. Like choosing images to take to paint later.
Carol, I also been really focussed on photo and video quality when buying my new phone! 😯 😊 😉
I would say daylight in the morning is better than electric light so I would recommend that rather taking the photo by night when you finish painting, you could try taking the photos the next morning if it's not still night when you leave home for work. 😊
Hi Pennie, thank you so much! I hope you will be able to tell the difference in your photos, please tell me! 👍 In my videos, I will talk about composition and everything that makes an image look good. If the photo has a good composition and colors, the painting will be nice ! So I will definitely address how to take good photos you can paint from. 😊
Great advice, again!
some really great advice . i had not thought of the bit about the page crease causing a shadow and now it seems so obvious... i am pretty terrible at taking photographs so maybe this will be useful for me thank you.
Hi! Yeah, sometimes you just don't realize something because you never really thought about it! 😊 😉 I really hope your photos will be better from now on! Please tell me if you see an improvement! 😌
This video was very informative and helpful. Thank you. I find that often the photograph seems dull in comparison to the original artwork or that the colours aren’t as true. Photo editing will resolve that and I’m looking forward to your next video on that. Another topic I would be interested in is how to take a photo to get the best composition for a painting, how to light a still life or portrait to provide the most interest, how to frame a shot to create a focal point. Any tips on how to take a photo of a framed piece (I’m always getting a glare) would also be useful.
Linda, yes, the rendering depends on the camera and its setting in addition to the lighting condition but it's always a bit duller and need a contrast boost. I hope you will like my upcoming tutorial and that this will help you to resolve the problem even more. Thank you so much for your demands and suggestions about videos relating to photo. For sure we will talk about composition, light and framing!! 😃 👍 I can tell that you already have the relevant interests! 😌 😉
About taking a photo of a framed piece, this is really tricky. The only thing that can help is buying a polarizing filter for the lens of your camera. This will remove the reflection and glare. 😌 You can't do it with the phone, except removing the outwork from the frame of course. Hope that helps too! 😊
Good helpful tips! Thank you!
I normally take my photo's on an overcast day, outside. But often not in the middle of the day. So that will be a game changer. Yay!
Wonderful, I am happy you got something from the video Bojoura! 👍 😊
Very helpful information. I have paper edge quilling painting, it's 3 Dimensions overlapping artwork. And m not able to get good photo 😣. Now I'm still confused how to get good results.
Thank you so very much for all your great videos! This tip was something I really needed asap :)
Wonderful then!! 👍 Thanks for your comment! 😃 😘
I live in Norway, in winter the sun comes up at like 9-10am and Down 4pm which means there only daylight while I'm at school😅 it'd be a bit awkward to take my art to school and take a bunch of photos of them. I can't wait for summer again
Very helpful, thank you so much!
You're welcome, Thank you Amy! 😃 😘
You can also turn on a grid in your phone on the camera app.. makes it easier to get the edges square..
Oh yeah, you're right, I just found the feature in the settings. I guess I don't want to get that grid when I take all of my photos but it can help for some people. Thanks for the tip, Eileen! 😊
I am really excited that you will make some videos about photography. I would like to know how to take better photos with my Instax Mini 90 camera. What looks good through the viewfinder does not always looks so good when I take the picture. I am also interested photo editing. Sometimes I can correct the colors to look closer to the painting, but sometimes I can’t get them to look right, no matter adjustments I try.
Hey Cora, Thank you so much!! I am really excited you like photography too. 😝 I think about doing the video about the Instax Mini 90 rather soon, in the newt few weeks. It will be more about why having an Instax and why I chose this one, like you, and introducing the camera, but I will try to include some tips about how to make better photos with it of course. However, the Instax is far from being the perfect camera indeed. Like you, I noticed that the framing is not the same on the photo than in the viewfinder 😑 but I still didn't manage to figure out how I should shift my framing with the camera to get the photo framing I want!! 😅 About editing the colors, indeed, if the shot is not good at first, you can't really get them right. That's why I insisted so much in this video : because if your photo is electric light yellowish, you will never be able to get the right color even with a strong photo editing... 😟 We always have to do our best when shooting! 😃
That is good to know that you can’t always correct the colors with a photo editor. I will experiment with how time of day affects my colors.
Hi beauty! Coucou! I experimented all these problem, tell me: ALL! My main problem is the paper is never in position, because of the wet and wet technique, it is always with waves. So I always put wash tape around my sketchbook, and sometime a double tape in the back of the photo. It is useful also your solution: clips! Fantastique! Merci beaucoup pour tout! :D From Madrid :D
Hi Sonsoles! Thanks for comment! I am glad the video helped a bit. One day I will make a video about how the flatten the watercolors, but it's only when it's not in a sketchbook... When you have waves, try to get the most consistent lighting (outside is the best). No direct sunlight. You can also try to use a vertical white piece of cardboard on the opposite side of where the light is coming from as a reflector to make the lighting more consistent. But the clips will already be a bit of a help, for sure. 😊
So thorough! Thank you
Thank you! I am happy you appreciated the in depth approach! 😃 😌 😘
Thank you! I am happy you appreciated the in depth approach! 😃 😌 😘
Great tips!! Although I live in sunny country I don't have a bright house, this problem is so frequentely..
Thanks Lenita, I hope the tips and checklist will help! 👍
And blue photos in the Canadian winters if outside (the snow).
Yeah, for sure, Susan... 😅 Try in the middle of the day the most possible (at the sun hour) and, if it's overcast, put your work in a spot with the best lighting possible, for example not too much under some trees. I know Canada have a lot of trees ❤️ but just to tell you!!!!! 😝 😉
Great tips! Thank you. :-)
Thanks a lot Pat! You're welcome! 😊
Great tips, I try and follow them when I’m not in a hurry. Sometimes I have to shoot in the house under lights. Can you in the future talk about the lighting you might use in that situation? How about scanning pictures, do you have any tips for that? I get such mixed results scanning watercolors. Thanks I look forward to the next video.
Hi Liz! I don't have any scanner and I would buy one if I was working on a watercolor book, for example, but to share on social media, I think it's so easy to shoot the pics with your phone and sharing them straight from it too. 😊 I am surprised you get mixed results with the scanning, though! How unsettling!... I know there are 2 sorts of scanner, ones being able to cope with a bit more depth than the others ones so maybe you have the wrong one and it doesn't work well with the texture of the paper??... 🤔
I am not sure I have a lot of advices for you about shooting under lights... I am not a studio photographer, I always shoot with natural light. I would usually rather use the light from a window even if it's low, putting the camera on a tripod to avoid blur (and shutting the lights down) than using the lights... But this could create the blue tone we were talking about though... Be careful about the temperature of the light bulbs. Probably day light bulbs are better, even if not perfect... See you! 😘
Following the White Rabbit I do try and use the window when I can. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Tu me diras ?! 😊 A très vite !! 😘
Ah ça m'intéresse beaucoup ! J'attends avec impatience... Bonne soirée !
Ce sera pour vendredi. 😊 Merci à toi, bises !!
Anne-Laure, thanks for the great tips.
You're welcome, Thank you Karen! 😃 😘
Thank you! Helpful!
You're very welcome, Thanks a lot Tiffany! 😃 😘
Interesting tips. Nothing out of common sense. My problem is I don't like taking photos of my work at all and even less post it on social media. Maybe I can get inspired by your enthusiasm :)
Ha, if you don't like it, I can't do anything for you 🤣 except sharing my enthusiasm, indeed! 😁 Taking the photos and prepare them can seem a bit boring, indeed, but once you get the habit about how to so it right, it becomes nicer and easier, plus it's so rewarding to be able to share the photos of your work and inspire others! 😊
Wow, Anne-Laure, it’s like you were watching me take my photos last night! I had no idea, and I hope my dog didnt bark at you!
🤣 Haha! I got you, Nancy!!! 🤣 😜 Now that you know that I am watching you 😱 😁 😝 I hope you will wait for daylight to offer to your art the photos it deserves!! 😌 😘
Great video, very helpful and interesting! I live in New Zealand, during winter time I find it tricky to photograph my oil paintings due to the low light all day, sometimes. Do you have any suggestions to remedy this?
Hi Marinus, for best results with oil paintings, I would hang them flat on a wall at camera height, use a tripod mounted camera and illuminate your painting from either side with 2 daylight rated, diffused lights. "Softbox type" are best but any daylight rated lights you can set up will do, you can make your own diffusers out of white cloth or tissue paper. It is really important to set the lighting up equidistant at either side of the camera at about lens height and at about 45 degrees to the painting surface. This is to prevent unwanted reflections back into the camera. The method I describe is the standard studio method for imaging artwork like this but you can experiment with simpler methods like 45 degrees to a window and use a white sheet as a reflector from the other side. The principles are the same. The thing to remember with oil paintings is that any gloss from the paint and the nature of the surface texture will tend to create random points of glare within the brushwork - hence the need to use offset, diffused light. The problems of shooting outside at your latitude would be the risk of casting your own shadow but you could try bright overcast sky for diffused light or, try the sun 4 O'clock over your shoulder using a white wall or sheet to balance the light from the other side. As they say... "Where there's a will....."
Hi! Thanks a lot! I am glad Peter answered, below, I was wondering, maybe you get some glare with oil? and have specific issues about the texture, the thickness of the paint?! 🤔 To avoir any glare or reflection, a polarized filter for the camera lens can be a good idea (it's not working with the photo but for a real camera). Is the light too low outside, even in the middle of the day? I will share with you if I have some other tips. 😊
Thank you very much Peter for giving such in depth advices for Marinus Jacqi!! 👍 😃 🤗
Thank you Peter :-)
We get winter rainfall, so during the overcast, cloudy times of winter there will probably be enough overcast light outside at noon, however it will be raining continuously. So, I feel like there are weeks of winter where all my photos are really sucky! [filled with too much blue light] :-)
Do another sketchbook tour XD
💙💚💜💛
Are you French?
yep...she sure is...definitely NOT Quebecoise
What's wrong with being a Quebescoise? :D
Bien sûr !! 😁😅🤣 🇫🇷😌
Oh, my!
As a Québécoise, I am intrigued by this comment kookatsoonjan...
am in love with your accent 😊
Great video! I was just thinking that I would love to learn more about photography as well. But I do much enjoy all your content!
