    Thanks. Your flying saucer is definitely a better option than turning two knobs on a blank and then trying to cut the blank diagonally to create 2 doorstops out of one timber blank. I'm an intermediate woodturner. Worst part of turning is tool sharpening. Need a Tormek! The trick is to have a longer blank than you think you need to allow for waste wood as well as the knob handles, otherwise the gradient of the timber will be too high to go under the door.

    Mike, I'm a subscriber and enjoy so many of your videos. You asked for suggestions and I have one. At 67 I'm new at woodturning and befuddled on which speeds are used for turning, sanding, application of stains and stuff like that. A downloadable chart that I can post on the wall near my lathe would be ideal.

    pretty cool mike . i think as a fairly new wood turner my biggest issue is sharpening and learning the grinds . i dont have a jig and well i dont want to tear up a good tool trying to learn the hard way . but hey them door stops look cool my wife used to work at the school and she wanted me to make her some for the teachers . i never got around to it as she dint stay there long enough . but looks like a good project .thanks mike stay safe my friend

      There are on line plans for making jigs if you feel that would help your sharpening. The key though is knowing what the dege should look like. Then make it happen.

    You mention in your comment: other ideas for videos. I would like to see one explaining the difference in bowl gouges. For instance, what is Irish grind compared to regular bowl gouges/ is one better or not? Are they used different?and why. Does size make a difference? Your way of sharing bowl gouges, etc.

    Nice product, Mike; especially with the ornamentation. Your comment on CA glue is timely, as I recently had a bad experience. CA glue can migrate very rapidly, and despite my frugality, I had some travel along to my chuck, and jam it up faster than I could react. The jaws stuck fast, and gave me 90 anxious minutes releasing them from the scroll. Fortunately the scroll survived and I finished up with a clean and well serviced chuck! Bernard.

    That is the style they use in Australia also. Most have a very thin rubber layer on the bottom to help prevent sliding.

    Very interesting idea - thanks. By the way I do like the added text clarifications. Also, though you've been trying the green screen I think it looks better, for me at least, to see you in your natural surroundings. Not a beginner but my biggest challenges I still find come from turning very soft wood - anything you'd feel like saying / demonstrating in that regard would be great. :-)

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 роки тому +1

      Poplar is about as soft as I want to turn. I do have students use pine squares to learn basic tool control turning beads and coves sticks. I avoid punky wood. Life is too short to turn crappy wood.

    • @richardchiswell6517
      @richardchiswell6517 4 роки тому

      @@MikePeaceWoodturning Yes, I know what you mean. The wood called poplar in the UK is very soft and marks very easily. I was thinking more of hardwoods that look great but have become a bit soft from water and time.

    I like the concept of this doorstop. Iwill add this to my project list. Mike, I am new to wood turning (7 months now) and am loving it immensely, as I have recently retired. You asked about frustrations encountered by new turners,and my biggest frustrations have been the lack of a turning club in my area, the nearest being about 40 miles away and the expense of exotic woods in Australia. I had to resort to buying a couple of loads of firewood to get some ironbark and mahogany to turn. Otherwise I'm able to source free offcuts from a local joined, which is mostly Oregon softwood. A single 8 inch bowl blank sells for around 40 dollars, which is too much for my skill level to risk. Love your channel, your tips and passion are inspiring.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for commenting. I never thought about challenges of getting wood in Australia. I guess that is true in parts of the USA but not where I live. Wood from down trees is readily available. I suspect you can find some treasures in your firewood.

    Great and unique idea from down under. It seems to be a better idea than the wedge type since it can be placed under the door from any angle.

Did you do a video on how to design and make it? If so can you share the link. If not can you share some pics of the entire rack? I'd like to make one and put it on wheels--I have three lathes and this would be a great addition.
    Thanks. Looking forward to our May demo!
