How to turn a Gavel on Your Wood Lathe - Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лис 2019
- Mike demonstrates how to turn a gavel and a sounding block. This is a traditional spindle project that can be turned without a scroll chuck. A turned gavel makes a wonderful commemorative gift for any organization’s outgoing president or a functional gift for any president, auctioneer, or judge wannabee.

Made a gavel about a year and a half ago but learned a lot of time saving tips if I make another one. Thanks Mike, enjoyed the videos.
Good stuff!
Brings back memories Mike. I turned my first gavel approximately 70 years ago on a lathe my grandfather built for my dad. That lathe is no longer in use but it still exists. My son has it now. Maybe it will get used again someday.
Sounds like a family heirloom!
Absolutely great demo. I love the work-around on using the lathe as a boring option if you don't have another option. Thanks, Mike.
Got that technique from Ernie Conover's book.
Thanks Mike
Nice project
A beautiful gavel Mike. If you apply the glue to the inside of the mortise instead of the tenon, you’ll be much less likely to get squeezeout.
Duh! Thanks for that tip I will use in the future.
Thanks, Mike!
Your videos help me a great deal, i learn most of my tool usage from watching you
Glad you are finding them useful.
Excellent video, thanks for sharing 👍
Mike, I am relative new to wood turning, have not tackling bowls yet, just bottle stoppers and coffee scoops from kits etc., but my neighbor has received a high position in a local lodge and needed a gavel and sounding board. This 2 part video has been extremely helpful in my relationship to make him such a gavel, THANKS FOR SUCH A VIDEO!!!!!!
HJigh five! That is what I want hear, that my videos are helping woodturners.
Another top video Mike!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Alan.
Wow great project Mike 👍
Thanks. Very easy project.
Mike this is the first thing i turned in wood shop my Junior year and was so much fun
Thanks for showing this gavel Mike. Takes me back to one of the earliest things I made in my father's shop. Though nowhere nearly nice as yours. Hope it is/was well received 🏆 - Mike
I hope so since it is a paid commission. The gentleman found my name from a "woodturning in Georgia" Google search. I guess I have a large digital footprint!
Never made one of these. Will be making one soon. Love your new lathe!! Thank you for the video.
Thanks, Charlie.
Awesome
Nice.
Very nice gavel set. I find the sound block gives better sound if you hollow it out on the bottom more than you show here.
Mine is about 3/8". How deep is yours? I guess I could experiment but it may be a while before I do another one.
I didn't actually measure but it was probably domed up just over a half inch in the middle. It was sold and then given as a present to someone else so I can't go back and measure it now.
Thanks. I was shooting for 1/2" but did not go quite that deep.
Great instructional video. Thank you. What type of finish would you use that would hold up to the use of the gavel and sound block?
I tend to use Minwax Antique Oil on just about anything. It is a penetrating finish rather than a film finish like lacquer or polyurethane but those would probably do fine as well. AO is easily reapplied but I would not expect that to be necessary. This set still has sap coming out after being cut more than 70 years ago. I am going to finish with shellac to seal it.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Thank you. I have yet to use the AO but it really seems like a good, easy to use finish. Can't wait till the next video. Plenty of gifts to make for the Holidays.
what size was the drilled hole ?
1/2" Sorry, I should have made that clear.
just finished my gavel in walnut. question please. what type of finish did you put on your gavel? and any specific reason why you used that finish? also assume you finished it after assembling handle to head? thanks again for the great video lesson !!!
