FIXED my SAABs P0089 Fuel System Code for Under $40!

  • In this video I discuss the P0089 check engine light code and what it can mean for your Saab 9-3. While the code comes up for a fuel pressure regulator, their may be an underlying fuel pump issue. Follow my steps if this code constantly comes up and change the fuel pressure regulator. If that doesn't fix the issue then look at testing the actual fuel pressure and possibly replacing the fuel pump. Be sure to like, share and subscribe!

    As you suspected and another comment stated, this really is a fuel pressure sensor, not a regulator. Our fuel system is controlled by a fuel pump module that is located under the passenger seat, but I think it rarely gets faulty, except when there was some sort of water leak in the car. As you have a Tech 2, you can view live data of the fuel pressure, but it can be done with a simple Elm327 scan tool too. When my fuel pump started thinking about the afterlife this is how I found out. When driving normally the fuel pressure should be around 3 bar and when you floor it, it should go up to about 5 bar and mine was dropping to 2, instead of going up. 😃 That’s my experience with it, hope it helps somebody

    Yes, this is essentially a fuel pressure sensor than a regulator. Saab uses a returnless fuel system where the fuel pump actually regulates the fuel pressure. I had changed the fuel pressure sensor too sometime back, let's see if it helps in keeping the code from coming back anytime soon.

      More of a fuel pressure sensor than a regular makes sense! Thanks for commenting.

    I have the blue Aero just like yours. When I purchased the car, it had the P0089 code and it would not go away. I had to replace the fuel pump the day I got it to pass smog in CA. I also replaced the sensor upfront, since then, it came up once on a really hot day, hasn't come back since. I've helped a few friends out with this code and it's always been the fuel pump in my experience.

      I know the fuel pump is not cheap to replace. My code in the past 1.5 to 2 years just does not go away after spending over $2,000 on it. How much to replace the fuel pump (parts and labor)? Help!!

      The fuel pressure sensor is on the rail on the 2.8. The regulator is on the fuel sender.

    Great job I wouldn't have thought about that. Very funny and don't change what you're doing, be yourself. Hopefully its fixed. Question, does your car act up when gas changes from summer to winter or winter to summer? Mine has last fall and this spring but just once. It's like it learns the new mix maybe? Anyway thanks for doing these videos.

    • @WeakestofWeeks
      @WeakestofWeeks  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think performance changes much between summer and winter blends for me but I usually don't drive the car too hard. I do notice a difference in the estimated MPG's though. I've never really manually calculated to actually tell a difference lol.

They slide out like on your car door panels. If you want to remove door sills lift at the bottom where the rubber door seal touches the sill. Pull up and it pops loose (very loud pop). Have you ever had issues with your fuel level reading incorrectly on either of your 2.8 Aero? If so did it require a full fuel sender replacement or just a level resistor/float? Can't seem to find info on the 2.8, only the 2.0.

    • @WeakestofWeeks
      @WeakestofWeeks  3 роки тому +1

      Oh yes, I've had the fuel level issues on one of my 2.8's which required either a fuel pump or sender replacement. I replaced just the sender and used Dorman #911-016. So far it's been in the car 3yrs and still going strong.

    If your getting the p0089 code its almost always the fuel pump or fuel filter inside the pump module . 80% of the time running 2 cans of seafoam or similar fuel treatment one after the other will fix the issue . If it does not then the fuel pump bypass valve (built in to the pump ) is failing or the filter is plugged up causing the bypass to open . This fuel system is returnees and runs off a pwm signal . So if the fuel pump control module (located under the passanger seat) senses a lower pressure at the fuel rail then requested the light comes on. The car almost always runs perfectly fine . Hope this information helps.

    • @WeakestofWeeks
      @WeakestofWeeks  3 роки тому

      Really good info I appreciate it! I assume the purpose of the seafoam would be to unblock any junk in the internal filter/strainer or blockages within the fuel lines? I find it odd US spec cars didn't get the serviceable external fuel filter. I'm definitely intrigued by the built in bypass valve so I'll have to do some research on that. Thanks for your comment!!

    My 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero has been incessantly showing the P0089 (I use my FIXD car code reader to reset it) and had it worked in by a local Saab shop who has been around for a while (but the owner is moving back to Seden and retiring)... then I took it a very well regarded shop who tested the fuel pressure and found no issue whatsoever. He also test drove the car many times and the light never came back on until I drove it off and the next morning it came back on... argh!!! I added fuel line cleaner etc, and the light comes on several times a day (after I reset the error light). It will not stop! I live in California and need to have it tested (every other year) this year to have it reregistered. In trouble if we cannot stop this error! HELP!!
