The “dark” low light car review looks amazing. Awesome midnight club vibes. Watched this at 6 in the morning (dark outside) with an ambient lighting tv. Good stuff guys. Appreciate the honesty. Have a good day my dude!
I'm not sure what you've changed but the lighting and camera work on this episode is seriously amazing.. absolutley incredible. looking forward to some next level content coming up!!
Everything from the lighting, the cinematography all the way to the punchlines were A+ on this video. Volkswagen should just make this video their commercial and it would attract buyers.
All this do it via the touch screen. That's why we bought a VW because they weren't doing it. And now they are. Heated steering wheels are the best feature hands down. Then hands quickly back up on the warm wheel. Loved the review.
I like the fact that this is the ONLY review that doesn’t whine endlessly about the sliders. Also glad to know there is someone else who knows how to adjust volume from the steering wheel. I also bought one before watching a bunch of reviews because I liked my 2018 GTI and knew I’d love this one. Starting in Sport mode seems a bit odd, especially as the Nuremberg Ring setting seems bother sportier and more comfortable. My only real complaint is that VW is not mandating that dealers spend an hour showing new owners how everything works. The dealer ship where I bought my 2018 GTI took the time to show me how to use everything. Unfortunately, they had only a black 2024 R, and as I live in Alabama in the US South, I know that I never want to own a black car here again (had a black Civic Si thirty years ago). As a result, I am STILL reading and re-reading the manual to make sure I’ve got all the tech figured out. And the manual isn’t that well-written. But man, when I’m driving this beast in the hills around here (we are at the Southern end of the Appalachian mountains), It. Is. Magic! And that’s coming from a guy with lots of track time in an E36 M3. So glad I bought this, and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I am enjoying mine. Thank you for the knowledge!
Moog, they have justification in calling it harder to use when the screen is slow to react, freezes and you can't see the controls without taking your eyes off the road. When the car is worse than the Mk7.5 in some parts, that's where the problem starts.
I own a 2022 MK8 GTI, it has the latest software and works absolutely fine, no freezing or lag, the non back lit temp and volume control Is also a non issue, I can honestly say I’ve not once thought about it while using the car at night, once you know your way around the menus (24hrs max) it is a total breeze to use, I sold my 2020 M135i xDrive and bought the Mk8 GTI, I have zero regrets about doing so! The Mk8 (in my case a GTI) IS AWSOME! 👌
Touch controls might be okay in Australia, but in freezing winters in Canada, it sucks. Especially if I'm diving with gloves, or if I'm trying to warm the car by setting the climate controls, my current Jetta I can spin the temp setting, poke at the defroster, windshield blower, go back out to scrape ice off my windows. It takes about 10 minutes for the car to actually become warm so I'm definitely not taking my gloves off when driving until much later. On the steering wheel, right now I can still change volume with gloves on, next song no problem. I don't have to care about accidental touch when I'm turning the wheel either, I can feel for the buttons on my steering wheel when driving without looking, but with VW's new setup, is it possible to click something as you're driving when you're trying to get the correct button? I don't mind touch controls where it isn't controlling something frequently used or important. But for high use cases and cold climates, it's not fun. Heck sometimes it's cold enough the LCD screen doesn't quite work properly, it might take seconds for it to transition from one display item to another.
@@Christian3522 good to know, I'm surprised that it worked that well with gloves. I have a Mk.6 Jetta which is very similar to Mk.7 golf R control layout. Perhaps the new R isn't all that bad, but the older controls were really well designed, very intuitive and easy to use. The touch isn't as much as a deal breaker as I initially thought, but it is more complicated and less friendly.
@@ronochow I want to check it out myself to really judge how it is but there isn't any in Canada really right now. I work with computers so tech doesn't scare me as well.
I've lived with the US variant of the Golf R since February. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be. I haven't randomly hit any steering wheel controls while driving, and you get used to the location of things fairly quickly. Knobs and buttons are still better, of course, but the controls are not deal breakers.
I've fat fingered the heated steering wheel a few times changing the radio 😅 The ESC is set up differently in mine. Must take a look to see if it can be changed for the quicker swipe down setting here.
It won't be long now until you need to subscribe to a paid update service for your car to get stuff like that, and to unlock the menu item that allows your passengers to keep their feets.
I think touch sensors are okay as long as they're responsive. I have 2018 Civic and love it but there's no volume knob and using the screen doesn't always work and is just clunky. It was bad enough that they used a knob for the following models years.
I have a 1986 928 Porsche.. I don't have to worry about touchsceen crap... why do people worry about a touchsceen.. Your driving a car, not a frigging ipad... Car is, steering wheel, loud pedal, and brakes.. Not some stupid touchsceen... I have a gaming tower with G920 wheel and pedals.. if you want to drive like that.. Touchsceens should be Banned...
@@graemejohnson9025 I honestly agree about them being banned. I got the car because I liked the car, the screen wasn't necessarily the selling point for me.

I just bought mine, Black Style, with Akrapovič exhaust, maaan, I am just giggling non-stop and adrenalin is off the chart 😍it's just hard to imagine beforehand how this car changes the whole attitude in race mode, it's like a different car with a touch of a button, sick 👌and I don't find the buttons too bothersome at all, would recommend🤘
what the casual observer takes away from this - buying a new Golf R is a polarising experience. also... rate the production quality, choice of angles and use of light. top job.
It's really a pretty good looking car and with a manual being available in the US, I may have to take a look, though the touch screen only interface would almost be a deal breaker. I really dislike them, and feel like they are big distractions. Great review! It will be fun to see what you do with it!
@@ertebelj it fits the character of the car more honestly. Being German and clinical and all. Having a manual in a Golf seems a bit off, maybe if it had a 3.2 VR6 like the R32, but a turbo 4 pot Golf should have a DSG in my opinion.
I like how they had a humorous way of disclosing many of the possible biases as well as conflicts of interest at the beginning before informing the audience that this particular video is not sponsored by the manufacturer. I think the audience would have a lot of respect for that. I know I do.
Probably the best review I've seen of this mk8 R. I'm tired of the same complaint over and over again with the infotainment. Every time a new technology, or technological advances are made in any industry, there are complaints of 'this will never work out' ' this is horrible' etc. Those complaints were made about the original iPhone in 2007, and kept being brought up every time new things came out. I'm sure the system works fine, the response seems very fast and the user interface on the screen is nice. Just takes getting used to. I can't wait to get my hands on a mk8 R. Definitely the benchmark.

This is an awesome, honest and well done car review. This is the way. Great job once more! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Love watching you legends. Also loving the classics content, as an FC owner I loved seeing your Rx7 down at the WTA the other weekend Marty and Moogs that 240 looks gorgeous. I'm waiting for the day you pair make an episode and start it with "Here we have our new old 1972 Nissan Hakasuka"
Loved the review! Also liked the random camera shots, genuinely fantastic. To answer your question about the "TRON light bar" I quite like it; something about it is cool to me; I preferred the headlights shape/style of the MK7 though.
my issue with the lack of tactile buttons in the infotainment centre is that i live in a city that gets to -40 degrees celcius every other day for 5-6 months of the year, and i've seen the way these systems completely freeze up and become unresponsive during those super cold days. i don't want to be fighting with this stuff 50% of the year.
When we were going through the mouse plague last year, I had found my removing my engine covers stopped the mice from nesting between the top of the engine, and the engine covers. I would be removing the engine covers if I was concerned about rodents eating the wiring,. I was very lucky with my car, the mice had only partially chewed the foam sleeve of a PCV hose, and didn't touch any of the wiring. The MK8 is a very nice car, only if I could afford to buy one. Congratulations on your purchase Moog.
I greatly appreciate your opinion. My 2017 Civic doesn’t have a knob, and guess what - it’s fine. I had to learn how to use the touch buttons, and it works fine. I understand how a knob is easier, sure, but touch buttons and new interactions don’t need to be to be spotlighted as why someone shouldn’t buy a car. Nothing is perfect, including the Golf R and my Civic, but overall they are still great cars.
Okay, here I thought I was the only nutcase doing a Veloster up. 😂 But K20? 🤢 Dude, so much more potential with swapping to Theta like I am. It's like having an Evo X Mitsi 4B11 with a Hyundai badge. 😎👍 Plus atleast your computers (ECU, TCM, BCM) can still talk to each other.
@@DennisRawet I was thinking increased refinement too! Sometime u see diesel car with thick insulation under the hood. This should have similar effect. If one wanted more noise they have the option to put the cover in the bin.
@@jondonnelly3 yeah, diesels need it for us in Sweden, diesels barley keep warm during winter. At idle they go down to ~70⁰ without extra heater the cabin is barley warm 😂 Volvos even have their front close some curtains below certain temperatures just to keep the engine warm enough. If you live in Australia you probably don't have these issues 😂 Heated seats, Eberspärcher/webasto are standard for our cars, you can't live without them once you had one.
As to the touchscreen everything in new cars, I think it's not only a bit less convenient and a bit harder to use than physical buttons and knobs. It think it's also potentially a significant danger factor on the roads, as whatever you want to do, you must take your eyes off the road for quite a lot of time to set anything up. With the buttons and knobs you can set lot's of stuff in the car without looking at the dashboard, or only looking at it for a split second. In my personal opinion this should be banned from cars due to safety considerations... I mean, with phones it's already hard to get new drivers to keep their eyes on the road, so now they can't even change the radio station without looking a couple seconds at a screen instead of the road. What's the point of the anti collision auto breaking systems if you then just add more eye-candy and distraction tech for the drivers?
So, are P platers allowed to drive cars with touch screens? As per the rules, they aren't even allowed to have their phone within reach while driving, and they aren't allowed to use a GPS.....so how could they safely operate a vehicle that's controlled by a touch screen? And before people start jumping up and down saying what P platers are going to be driving a Golf R, I'm talking about any new vehicle that has this type of control system.
A few years ago I bought a WRX and was considering the GTI at the time. I always thought about what would be next the R or STI. After looking at this review, its no question the R is so far ahead of what Subaru is doing. The latest WRX is a joke, and the no STI is an insult to enthusiasts. Fantastic video :)
tactile controls are fine when you're parked... when the car is moving, you want to hold some thing, and THEN WHILE HOLDING IT moving it to the percentage of setting you want , and ALL that without having to look at it tactile control will take an input right away skipping the holding step which sucks if there's literally any grit on the road
This is an impressive piece of Filming and Camerawork. Supergarage lighting, set lighting, and the Beautiful Moog practically dances in and around the Golf. Camera and editing Crew, you nailed this one. I LIKE IT!!!
love the car, had a 2 door mk7 R and loved it - the four door mk8 still looks like a poor compromise of function over form in my opinion - also noted the horrible orange peel in the paint, not quite sure what happened to decent factory paint jobs!
It would still be easier to have an actual button marked "launch" that you press and then launch lol 😆 Also VW have left off part of the letter R which actually makes it some new kind of symbol rather than the internationally recognised letter R .
I work at VW and we just got a Blue 2024 Golf R for our lot in manual. When I saw it, I wanted it. But when I saw the all this touch crap, I changed my mind on wanting it. But few days after, I was looking at it again. Needless to say, I bought it. Main reason is, it's the last year with them offering it as a manual. And with this being the last year as manual, I do think it will hold it's value a bit better.
The ‘Tron’ Lightbar has to be one of the worst design features in my opinion. I have absolutely no idea why so many companies have jumped on this feature, I just don’t like it! I think the moment Porsche started joining the rear lights on non 911 models other companies started doing it too, then it’s just got out of control with all of these companies doing it with the front lights!
@@grantschmidt2617 Porsche has been utilising the rear light bar since the introduction to it on the first 911 Carrera 4S. It could’ve been used in the design of other models but it just hasn’t until the latest generations! In my opinion I hate the use of it on the front. Porsche do not make a product with the light bar on the front..
After owning an Audi for 3 years which spent more time up in the air than back on the ground, I won't own anything made by VW again, especially after all the crash test defects they hid from NTSHA to raise their safety scores and rigging millions of diesel engines to make their emissions appear less toxic in tests than they actually were.
Thank you! Seeing your run through of the infotainment has me way less worried about the Golf R I have on order (I currently drive a Mk 7.5 GTI). I still don't LIKE that they've taken all the knobs away, but I think I'll adapt.
@12:40 I can tell you as a owner that I do in fact, have an issue with turning on the buttons on the steering wheel. Try doing a one-handed rotation and you'll see, because you have to put your palm flat across the wheel/buttons to complete the u-turn.
I love hard controls but seriously the touch controls and their adjustability is so much superior. I love the glass cockpit. Mechanical failures are much more common in planes and cars nowadays
We hired a cooking mk8 on holiday and it was such an accomplished car but two things bugged me so much: 1. The vents don’t have the ability to adjust airflow and direction separately, and they’re so low they just make your hands cold (or hot). 2. I couldn’t turn the lane assist off which drove me mental when driving on mountain roads
You make it look easy to use the touchcontrols while you're sitting stationary and inside. Now try it while you need to pay attention to traffic. Buttons are easier.
The button problem has been completely blown out of the water by journalists for attention, I've got a 2022 tiguan with the sliding temperature controls and its very simple to use after the first week I got use to it and its fine, journalists just have nothing better to do when they review good cars so they go for the littlest things.

I've just bought a mk6 golf tsi gt, it's a 1.4 turbo supercharged engine with 158bhp and i love this car, i love its comfort and the way its drives, ill be getting it remapped upto 200bhp very soon
Really rate the increase in production. Wanna see more reviews like this! Moog is a great host
This was awesome. The early GTIs were impressively sporty, golf R is just savage, it’s so camouflage
@@cfbm125 Still a slow outdated system that requires you to take your eyes off the road unlike the Mk7.5.
To say nothing of when it's REALLY cold and the displays lag
Shopdap did a video and these buttons work with any gloves btw. Don't need the special touch screen ones for it to work.
Production value: over 9000
Everything looks so purdy and concise. And the humor is Maaaad
I've lived with the US variant of the Golf R since February. It's not as bad as people are making it out to be. I haven't randomly hit any steering wheel controls while driving, and you get used to the location of things fairly quickly. Knobs and buttons are still better, of course, but the controls are not deal breakers.
I've fat fingered the heated steering wheel a few times changing the radio 😅
The ESC is set up differently in mine. Must take a look to see if it can be changed for the quicker swipe down setting here.
He has a shortcut made to the ESC menu
It won't be long now until you need to subscribe to a paid update service for your car to get stuff like that, and to unlock the menu item that allows your passengers to keep their feets.
Really loving the lighting and camera work in this video. You've done well setting up the garage for filming.
@@graemejohnson9025 Agreed. I bought a 997.1 911 for a reason - it's the last year before touch screens
Being a big Vdubber even having my channel based around my modified BT GLI this has me soooo jealous! I cant find any mk8 R's near me in PA. 1 a couple hours away marked up to 50,000 :(

I love the brutally honest review. We need a series of reviews by Marty and Moog.
what the casual observer takes away from this - buying a new Golf R is a polarising experience.
also... rate the production quality, choice of angles and use of light. top job.
It's really a pretty good looking car and with a manual being available in the US, I may have to take a look, though the touch screen only interface would almost be a deal breaker. I really dislike them, and feel like they are big distractions.
Great review! It will be fun to see what you do with it!
Seriously it is soo annoying to use you’ll regret buying the car..Trust me i know.
It’s weird, I’d prefer manual In Any other car than a VAG, the DSG, just fits and works so good
@@ertebelj it fits the character of the car more honestly. Being German and clinical and all. Having a manual in a Golf seems a bit off, maybe if it had a 3.2 VR6 like the R32, but a turbo 4 pot Golf should have a DSG in my opinion.
@@devandrasimanjuntak1646 highly agree
@@justkiddin1980 no you dont
I'm not even a big VW fan but this video was great, entertaining, informative and fun to watch.
VW isn't a fan of you either🍻
@@chrissmel94 awe looks like someone's feelings got hurt and made you feel like you needed to say that? Grow up guy.
🍻 yourself an leave me out of your man child tantrum.
I love the ending. I guess I'm too old at 57 to understand the car though. Fast cars with so much tech and such an emphasis on luxu... er, comfort, just seem like precious little soft things to me in spite of the numbers. Bleh. I always get tired of them in a bit and go back to something "less" and enjoy it more
This is an awesome, honest and well done car review.
This is the way.
Great job once more!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
the amount of work you guys put into something we can watch for free is incredible!
This is another quality video from the best 4WD Channel in all of the UA-cams.
Love your channel folks. I'm building a k20 turbo veloster ✌🏼
That's awesome.
Okay, here I thought I was the only nutcase doing a Veloster up. 😂
But K20? 🤢 Dude, so much more potential with swapping to Theta like I am. It's like having an Evo X Mitsi 4B11 with a Hyundai badge. 😎👍 Plus atleast your computers (ECU, TCM, BCM) can still talk to each other.

Soft engine cover is for pedestrian safety to help minimise injury when impacting the hood and engine block
probably reduce alot of noise also from the engine
@@DennisRawet I was thinking increased refinement too! Sometime u see diesel car with thick insulation under the hood. This should have similar effect. If one wanted more noise they have the option to put the cover in the bin.
@@jondonnelly3 yeah, diesels need it for us in Sweden, diesels barley keep warm during winter. At idle they go down to ~70⁰ without extra heater the cabin is barley warm 😂
Volvos even have their front close some curtains below certain temperatures just to keep the engine warm enough.
If you live in Australia you probably don't have these issues 😂
Heated seats, Eberspärcher/webasto are standard for our cars, you can't live without them once you had one.
I've been watching for years and the production just gets better and better! Well done boys.
wait a minute....did Moog just Rick Rolled us?!? 11:50
So good to see how far yous two have come! Been hear with yous from your first vid lol
Here*
tactile controls are fine when you're parked...
when the car is moving, you want to hold some thing, and THEN WHILE HOLDING IT moving it to the percentage of setting you want , and ALL that without having to look at it
tactile control will take an input right away skipping the holding step which sucks if there's literally any grit on the road
Love the different style of video
This is an impressive piece of Filming and Camerawork.
Supergarage lighting, set lighting, and the Beautiful Moog practically dances in and around the Golf.
Camera and editing Crew, you nailed this one. I LIKE IT!!!
Last time moog danced on a car it didn't end so well ;-)
I just died laughing watching this 😂😂 the handstand 🤣🤣 you guys are legendary! Keep it up!!!
Thought this was the best 4x4 Channel on the interballs.. I'm confused here.
The Golf R is a ‘4x4’ hahahaha
And I still prefer the Mk 2 Golf.
And the mk3 + mk4
Best 4 wheel drive channel on the internet.
This guy mods cars and has a full studio with vintage synths?? My new favorite channel
love the car, had a 2 door mk7 R and loved it - the four door mk8 still looks like a poor compromise of function over form in my opinion - also noted the horrible orange peel in the paint, not quite sure what happened to decent factory paint jobs!
Garbage, soft paint is standard now sadly.
Moog tries the Mk8 and realizes he wants his Mk7 back. 😛👍
It would still be easier to have an actual button marked "launch" that you press and then launch lol 😆
Also VW have left off part of the letter R which actually makes it some new kind of symbol rather than the internationally recognised letter R .
😂 😂 😂 Yeah true but for safety reasons
Holy cow where did this production style come from? The edits, the scenes, the lighting. This vid was refreshingly different.
It's almost like Porsche and Volkswagen are the same company and feature similar design cues across the range.. 🤦🏼♂️
The good: It's a GTI
The bad: everything you interact with
The ugly: sunroof will still probably have drainage issues
It's R, not GTi
R is just an AWD GTI with a tune
After owning an Audi for 3 years which spent more time up in the air than back on the ground, I won't own anything made by VW again, especially after all the crash test defects they hid from NTSHA to raise their safety scores and rigging millions of diesel engines to make their emissions appear less toxic in tests than they actually were.
The lighting and camera work gives such a surreal vibe. I havent finished watching yet but this would be a great start to a car review segment for MCM
"Bloopers" at the end were a cherry on top of the entire video. Loved it!
Taking the piss out of car wow 😂
I wonder if this will WOW them.😂
Best new car review channel on the planet! 😀
Thanks Blair!
Thank you! Seeing your run through of the infotainment has me way less worried about the Golf R I have on order (I currently drive a Mk 7.5 GTI). I still don't LIKE that they've taken all the knobs away, but I think I'll adapt.
The best content MCM has put out in a long.....long time!!!
@12:40 I can tell you as a owner that I do in fact, have an issue with turning on the buttons on the steering wheel. Try doing a one-handed rotation and you'll see, because you have to put your palm flat across the wheel/buttons to complete the u-turn.
LIGHTING : 5 star ... FILMOGRAPHY : 5 star ... EDITING : 5 star. This was really great
Amazing, no matter how much y’all try and duck up what you do… you make it better. How?!?!?
I appreciate your alternative take on the much-lamented infotainment. Cheers!
100% my favourite vid you have ever done !!
Fantastic video! The quality and editing is second to none. Incredible lighting and screen shots. Awesome car! From an ex 7R owner 😉
The button problem has been completely blown out of the water by journalists for attention, I've got a 2022 tiguan with the sliding temperature controls and its very simple to use after the first week I got use to it and its fine, journalists just have nothing better to do when they review good cars so they go for the littlest things.
I watch a lot of car review channels like rcr or Doug demuro things like that but man… this review was amazing it was entertaining informative and kept me wondering what will happen next. I expected no less from the worlds number 1 four wheel driving channel!
You guys definitely delivered with this!

So many car so called journalists join the hate bandwagon on the MK8 . I know it’s not a prefect car but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad car.
