A big testament to this generation is that it doesn't really have a clear winner. All the console manufacturers actually felt competitive in trying to bring in unique experiences to justify their hardware.
I'm now in my 30s. It feels like yesterday I was in 9th grade and got my 360 for Christmas. It's insane how these are becoming "retro" consoles now. I was a kid when gen 7 started in jr high and when it ended I was graduating from college and was already married. It's crazy how much this generation means to me.
One thing about this generation I loved is that although online play was fully developed during this generation. However, local multi-player was still very common place. Everyone had a DS and download play was great. People were still coming over to a friend/family members house to play Mario Kart/Party/Smash/Sports, wii sports, and COD(When it was still good and fresh)/Halo split screen.
Given that the 7th generation of consoles is nearly pushing 20 years at this point, it one of those things that just gives me a sense of fascination, and a tinge of existential dread. (I guess that's what having a Quarter lfie crisis does to you.) At the same time, I use it as motivation to just continue moving forward and just live my life.
It's so weird to think that wii, PS3 and 360 are almost 20 years old and now retro. They came out when when I was in high school. I don't think I'm that old.
I am a few days older than the Wii, and the times I heard: "The Wii is now old enough to drive!" or recently, "The Wii is now an adult!" just hit so close to home. I quite literally grew up alongside this sturdy little console and its made me into the massive nerd I am today (as sappy as that sounds). I love my good old Wii and I hope it lasts as long as I do. :,)
Your intro for this video has me like Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan. I was turning 18 in the time period you're describing, and hearing someone describe the Wii the way I describe the Sega Genesis is turning me gray in real time.
I had fond memories of the NES and SNES as an 80s kid. Did not get a Sega Genesis, N64, or OG XBox because didn't have the money or time at the time. The Gen 7 systems I remembered well because I got the OG DS for my son's birthday and the countless hours spent playing games on the Wii from Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, and Twilight Princess.
It was amazing to see the DS still thriving in the 2010s. To think all those memories and experiences came from hardware from like '04 is worth talking about to this day.
Even tho I was only born in 2008 I mostly played generation 7 stuff I had a Wii and a dsi and I remember that time just going home from school just to play rabbids go home on the Wii idk if it was a good reviewed game or not I loved it as a kid
To be fair, the generation 7 is the last time we had an actual competition. Everyone pushed the others to become the better version of themselves. Right now, Xbox just gave up, Sony thinks they're a new Apple and Nintendo is just doing its own thing without giving a damn about the other consoles. We need the competition back.
This generation had the greatest online experience and was honestly the best time with so many games that felt huge, but unfortunately set in motion little things that would spiral into the greed that has ruined the industry today
People thought Nintendo was going third party after the Wii U era, that was never going to happen, they were just coming off the 7th generation their most successful generation until the Switch made more money than every previous console generations combined, and the 3DS was a reasonable success , the 7th gen and the 3DS really saved Nintendo. Side note: I'm not exaggerating, the Switch era really made so much money, crazy I know. That's thanks to the Switch and its games themselves, the multiple theme parks, the Mario movie, a shit ton of merchandise, Pokemon always makes Nintendo millions.
I don’t believe in god but I thank god I live in the universe where a gaming console that came out in 2005 still has online support almost 20 years later. Also it’s nice to think if the 7th gen can be supported for 20 years how long will the 8th gen be supported for?
Correction: The dreamcast wasn't the first home console with internet access built-in. The apple pippin came out in 1996, and just because it sucked ass doesn't disqualify it.
While some consider the 6th generation better, I have to disagree as while im not denying that the 6th gen is fantastic, it wasn’t really a balanced generation and I feel like gaming is a tad more boring when one of the big 3 has too much of a dominance (and it can enable one company to become arrogant). Whereas the 7th gen had so many great games and each platform went all out and with everyone doing extremely, nobody could really afford to be arrogant. Sony learnt that the hard way with the PS3s launch and had to do some drastic things to keep up. Microsoft who was still relatively a new player in the console space had to really prove themselves. Even with Nintendo, they had to work with heavier limitations compared to others. While the wii did bring something incredibly unique at the time and brought in a type of customer base that couldn’t have been brought in normally in that era, they really had to pull off major heavy hitters with it being weaker specs wise or they risk falling off severely. The 8th and 9th generation really showcased how overconfidence can lead to a weaker generation, the wii u tried to ride the wii’s successes and failed, the xbox one irreparably damaged Xbox in a way where its presence is fading from the console space and resorted to buying out other studios and publishers to compensate and Sony became far too overconfident with the success of the PS4 that they think they could do whatever thus leading to them making baffling decisions with what their investing in game projects going far into live service that they lost alot of what made them stand out in the ps2 and 3 days. In an ideal situation No major platform should ever falter severely as it can and has led to complacency
the best playstation era was ps2 era but the best consoles era are 7th era back the in ps2 era there no consoles really can compete with ps2 and it make an unfair and not balanced consoles war but in 7th gen, consoles really close to each other in competitons

Was truly a good time to be a gamer
Wii would like to play.
I love The Wii and i have 1

I grew up in the transition between generation 7 and generation 8, so i have fond memories of both
2007-2012 hit different didn't it
Though I completely agree with this arguement, this video reeks from the phrase, "Back in my day"

well up until today i was not aware of an orchestral version of no surprises by radiohead so thank you very much
The 360 didn’t have full backwards compatibility with the og Xbox

I was pretty young when these consoles came, some are older them me, so I don't remember must, but I do remember me playing the psp go and 2ds a lot
For me it's Generation 6, followed by Generation 7, which is kind of a mix due to backwards compatibility lol. I'm 30 now. Man time flies...

The DSi was released in 2008 in JP and 2009 in NA. The 3DS is the one that was released in 2011
This was my childhood 😭
The XBOX 360 and 3DS are my favorite consoles and handhelds respectively. I still have them and play them almost every day.
Amazing video!! It brought me back to my childhood! :) alsooo....What's the name of the song you used through the video?

People say 6 was better, but come on. This was the start of online play and HD resolution, and the 7th Gen library was absolutely _NUTS._
Online play was the start of the problem though
@ScottFree-GB no? Then there wouldn't be stuff like fortnite
@@JordanisokatnthDo you think Fortnite was good for the gaming industry? No, no it was not.
7th gen's console online play was a joke compared to PC gaming during 5th and 6th gen.

The worst trends in gaming started around this era.
The Wii has been unfairly getting the shaft for years, and it's time people re-evaluate it.

Nobody gonna talk about the SpongeBob video at 4:40 💀
The DSi would’ve been perfect if they kept the gba slot. It’s okay tho because you can homebrew it and get a gba emulator.
Early gen Xbox
Mid gen Wii
Late gen ps3.

It’s generation 6 bc of the ps2 and GameCube
