This was the day they first met. Mayer was recording at Don Was’ studio and Bob stopped by to say hi to Don. Don introduced John to Bob and John invited him to play that night on the show he was guest hosting. They jammed for 2 hrs in sound check and it went so well they both decided they should do it more…and Dead and Co was born. Fun 7 years. I’m going to miss seeing that band.

there's just one little mystery i'm trying to figure out . . . i keep reading references to the story of don was introducing them at was' studio, but mayer showed up (unannounced, as i understand it) at the artist hospitality area of the jammy awards in 2002 (roseland ballroom, nyc) before the evening's festivities & pretty much asked if he might join in some how . . . and he did. bobby was part of the line-up that nite w/ ratdog, as was oteil, who was part of a full allman bros band surprise performance (some members of the allmans were scheduled). i'm having a hard time trying to figure out how john & bobby - and oteil - may have gone thru the eve without meeting each other . . . there were a lot of players there, but not so many that they might not have met.
google: jammys 2002 roseland ballroom - you should find some reviews of the evening

Trey is good for Phish but he wasn't exactly the best fit for the Dead. Saw Fare thee Well in Chicago 2015 and I really enjoyed it. I saw Dead and Co in Boulder CO last month and it blew me away! Mayer plays so amazing anyway but he showed another facet of how great of a guitarist he is with Dead and Co. It's crazy to know that John mayer heard this song and stopped what he was doin to find out who it was, discovered the dead, then has this opportunity to jam with the legend himself after hosting a show. When I first heard he was gonna be playing with dead and co I was super skeptical as I had only heard his pop stuff but after catching about 15 of their shows I am blown away with how well he was able to get into the groove with the masters. Of course he's no Jerry but he def holds the torch. Never let the music die.

What's hard for me to believe is that -- not Truckin', or Casey Jones, or Sugar Magnolia, or Saint Stephen or Bertha -- but ALTHEA was the song that turned on the Dead switch for Mayer. Truth be told, when the GD would play Althea I would hit the can, then get another beer! 😎 But we love John for that ... ❤

I'd say his playing was much more exciting and "technical" compared to now (excluding Dead and Co. shows) but nowadays, he's a lot more chill and likes to lay back a little bit more. Read about this historic meeting, John fell in love with Althea after hearing it his 1st time in 2011, so in 2015, when John was guest hosting The Late Late Shpw, Bobby asked John to jam with him& of course they played Althea, one of my favorite Dead songs! Have seen Dead and Company live a few times, they are so good, my husband, who I dragged to several Grateful Dead concerts, likes John Mayer coz he keeps the band tight musically, though John looks like he’s having an awesome time. I loved Jerry, always will, have a 1968 Dead poster, framed & mounted on my bedroom wall of Jerry with angel wings…❣️

The story I heard is that it was after this, in June 2015, that Bob sent John to study with Phill at Terrapin Crossroads, Phill's club in Marin. He played rhythm for two nights, long nights, with the house band, Terrapin Family Band. He was respectful, blended in, and watched the lead guitarist like a hawk, studying with focused concentration. The vids are here someplace. After the concert, John & Phill played a set at the bar there. Phill is smiling the whole time. John sang Sugaree and I can't-recall-my-brain...It looks to me, & others I've talked to that it was then the deal was made, and blessed by Phill.
