- Which is better, the American Gold Eagle or the American Gold Buffalo? Both have some pros and cons but doesn't one edge out the other? Thank you all for watching!
I stack silver and gold to hedge against our debt-fueled, fiat currency-based economy that I am convinced is in severe trouble. Consider stacking silver and gold yourself to help you build and preserve wealth. And thank you for watching Campbell’s Coins!

I tend to lean towards the buffalo
Both are fine
Who's us? You're working for the government aren't you!?!
Without a doubt, I prefer the buffalo.
Hands down
The cheapest .9999 i can find. Right now that's the Britannias. I am up to 23 of them now. LOL. I keep telling myself that I am going to buy an Eagle, then look at the cost difference and buy the Biritannias instead. The security features also help the Britannias. I think our mint is a bit arrogant, less features, more premium. They think that are the Tommy Hilfiger of bullion.
@@jf2mad Haha good for you!
I love both but it'd be nice if the Buffalo's were available in fractional sizes 🇺🇲
100%
Fractional Buffalos will likely never be a thing due to the durability issue. Without the hardening/durability copper-silver alloy of an American Gold Eagle, the Buffalo seems like a pat of cold butter-one little ding and it’s got a dent or a scratch.
I’d love to see these in fractional sizes…
Buffalo 🦬 - Nothing like holding the deep, rich color and weight of pure Gold
Bravo!
I agree with you. I dont have any, but would get the Buffalo if I could
buffalo instantly wins because its 24k & easily sold anywhere in the world
Be aware that the Eagle contains one full ounce of 24K gold. The coin weighs 1.09 ounces, however, because it *also* contains a copper-silver alloy that gives the coin much greater durability. That is why the coin is 22K. Too many folks are getting confused because some UA-cam channels just don’t explain it, so the average person thinks that the Buffalo is somehow “better” which makes no sense. BOTH coins contain the SAME AMOUNT of pure gold.
@@byteme0000some places have a tax on 22k gold but not 24k gold
@@byteme0000I think you’re explaining something that isn’t really what people are concerned with. Eagles are 22k gold, and are heavier than 1 Troy oz because of this. Buffalos are 24k ‘pure gold’ and weigh 1 Troy oz. I believe the reason that buffalo collectors, like myself, prefer the coin is because it is 1 Troy oz of 24k .9999 gold, nothing else. This is a major factor to some people. The color is what gold is supposed to be. I personally enjoy knowing I am holding ‘real’ gold, the same gold the streets of heaven were compared to.
@@TheGunNurse Well yes, that's exactly what I said. Btw, I'm completely with you if your argument is that you just simply prefer Buffalos because of their color, being an even one ounce, etc., but I still run into people who are simply not understanding that both Eagles and Buffalos contain the same amount of gold. As for myself, I like the look and feel of both coins and really don't prefer one over the other. I always try to maintain an equal number of both.
@@byteme0000 Those people are always out there in every hobby and subject. There will always be those ‘some’ people who are just persistently ignorant. The majority of people who debate this issue don’t even own either coin. If you’re up to spending $2k on a coin, you should at least understand what it is that you’re buying and why it’s worth the price to you. Pure gold, to me and many, will always be preferred over gold of higher weight, but lower purity. The debate is very similar to comparing 90% junk silver to 99.9% fine silver (not considering added numismatic value)
Buffalo! Gotta love the hue of this beautiful coin. Like the AGE as well. First 1 oz coin I ever purchased was the Buffalo
I love it! Thanks!
My first Gold Purchase and it's 3 Gold 24K Buffalo's. I simply did not like the gold eagle because really it's an alloy and not too sure whether it would corrode now. The Buffalo will not corrode because it's all gold.
Great choice to begin with! I picked two more Buffalo's yesterday @ $1935 per
I own the gold buffalo Indian coin I love it!
Awesome! It's pretty great.
Myfavorite is whichever one I can afford to purchase. That being said, i hold mostly fractional gold eagles. In terms of beauty, I prefer the buffalo.
Right on! Thanks for stopping by!
Buffalo is my favorite my stack now 7oz Age, 5oz Buffalo’s and 2.6 oz fractional for a total 14.6 oz ✊
Great job so far!
You re right Buffalo !!
100%
The Buffalo gets the nod for me. Simply because of the design. That is all! Nice history lesson on both. Nicely done!
Right on! I knew I liked you for a reason haha. As always, I appreciate you. Thanks man.
I couldn’t decide so, I just bought both 2022🤩
@@skullstaxx nice!
I know I'm in the minority here, but I love the eagle on the type 2 waaaaay more than type 1. I think it's a great design to see OUR American eagle up close, it's such a beautiful bird! It's all good whichever one chooses to collect though. 👍
Buffalo for sure because of that beautiful, deeper yellow but the Gold Eagle is cool too!
For sure! I like both as well. Thanks for stopping by!
Very important and informative thank you I found your discussion fascinating
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Very well done video. Thank you for the great, comprehensive education.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping by!
Love me some Buffalo gold. I picked up my first of each last year. I love the classic art on our coins. Pre-33 are just classy.
Pre 33 trumps all haha. Thanks for watching!
I just got my first maple and my first buffalo, to be honest, I love the buffalo. It look la like you are holding a coin from the old west, from the movie the bad the good and the ugly. I love it!
I’ve only got fractional gold eagles at the moment but my first full ounce will definitely be the Buffalo. I need to feel that pure gold feeling everyone talks about!
I just ordered my first and only 1oz gold buffalo. Talk about anxiety during this waiting period!
Good amd through breakdown. Like how you "stacked" them against each other in categories. I think I'd prefer the gold buffalo, if i could afford one. I can only buy fractional at this time, so have some eagles. But i agree that I'd rather buy buffalos if they were fractional. I've bought more fractional gold from other countries, to get the three 9's/four 9's fine gold, plus really like some of the foreign designs and security features.
Thanks so much! Other countries really have the security features down, we have a missing reed on the edge of a coin. Makes no sense. I don't think any of the Buffalos have security features. I wonder what the gold eagle market would look like if they created fractional buffalos on a regular basis. Thanks for stopping by!
Pretty much what I have figured out. Thanks for helping me make up my mind on the one ounce
No prob! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this rundown
strongly agree.
I prefer 1 oz. Gold Buffalos
Good choice!
Great video. Great knowledge
Thanks for watching!
Like them both, AE four coin sets are awesome but getting too pricey for me. Buffalo has that nice gold color.
good video, First view, I like the channel.
Awesome, thank you!
Though I prefer buffaloes including proofs if that’s all that’s available. when I go to my LCS I’m going to buy gold regardless. If the buffaloes are unavailable I’ll buy eagles. When neither are available I’ve bought fractional, which I really don’t care for (due to the premiums) as well as RCM bars if that’s all that’s available. After that I defer to government mint silver, ASE’s, philharmonics or krugerrands. In that order. The only gold or silver I absolutely refuse to buy is anything minted from China.
Great video. I can’t figure out why anyone would want copper mixed with their gold. Buffalos all the way for me.
100%
Thank you!
Buying one ounce Buffalo gold is a no go for my budget. Kudos to those of you who can afford them. My last purchase was a quarter ounce Eagle.
Fear the spear, GO NOLES !
@@billyhurst4319 wow, I think you’re the first person to notice! I’m a Seminole dad. Both of my daughters are FSU alumni. Go Noles!
Nothing wrong with the gold eagle, let alone a 1/4oz. I love that size. Thanks for watching!
@@saltwatersaddletramp7229 Amen brother of course , my youngest daughter graduated in 2020 from FSU
I want them both. The buffalo is gorgeous and is sold out more frequently.
You're right, it's the first to sell out. Speaks to it's popularity. Thanks for stopping by!
I like buffalos for the same reasons. I know it’s bullion, but lower mintages are attractive.
🔥🦈🌊
I'm surprised more people aren't attracted to it and why previous year buffalos don't have a higher premium over random year eagles, given the mintage alone. Maybe just unrealized potential.
I Enjoy the Buffalo textured look...
It's unique!
My uncle loves the Buffalo coin as its 99.90 pure, but he is also a Redskin's fan...yes I said it. lol!
I am saving up know for my first Eagle, Not a sports fan, just like the designs on both the old and new versions.
Right on!
In my opinion, the missing "reed" on the edge of the one-ounce Gold Eagle - gives an appearance not unlike an area of damage. Additionally, as a "questionable" security feature - it esthetically "detracts" from the coin's cohesive beauty. The Gold Buffalo is the "Go-To" choice of reason!
Well said. Thanks Ron!
I enjoyed the video. I also like the Buffalos. However, everyone always refers to the Eagles when pricing the buying and selling of American bullion. Therefore, I think that Eagles might actually be better to hold. BTW, I thought that they did make fractional Buffalos in the early years (i.e., 2006-2008). I don't have any fractional Buffalos. But I always have my eyes open to acquire some. 🙂
Thanks so much Wayne! Eagles are referred to and loved an awful lot. They are popular for a reason. Appreciate you stopping by!
Love the buffaloes
I like the Buffalo, they have been overly hunted around here and are getting hard to find.
Making a comeback! Good reason though!
I prefer eagle because of the design.
In Australia 22k attracts 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax) whereas 24k 9999 gold doesn’t.
For this reason if you are stacking not collecting it is a no brainer.
Good to know! I thought this tax was just in Canada. Thanks for sharing!
I buy Canadian Maples, as they are PURE Gold and cost less than The U.S. coins, but are easy to sell.....
I prefer the Buffalo purely (pun intended) for its purity
Not a bad choice!
Perfect breakdown. Provided just what i needed. No butt hurt here. Lol
Haha thanks!
Hi, Campbell. I like the Buffalo. I like the design. *TYU*
Good pick!
I think it just comes down to liquidity and resale value in terms of premium - that will change depending on what country you find yourself in
I think the obverse of the gold Eagle is timeless. An Eagle and his family. We are the eagles.
I prefer a nusmastic Pre-1933 gold over the Buffalo coin and Gold Silver Eagle.
Hahaha good choice!
Love the Gold Buffalo, my favorite ❤
Fractional is better for me, period. What a shame they don't offer the Buffaloes in fractional sizes.
From the moment I saw the first Buffaloes 🦬 minted back in 2006 I fell in love with it. Bought my first 2 in 2006 and had them sent to NGC for rating. Both were certified MS70. Been buying them ever since. Classic American history burnt into a 24 carat Gold sovereign coin. What else can you ask for as a collector? If your worried about damage to your buffaloes 🦬 buy a $2 clear coin case for it.
Exactly. Easy ways to deal with the softness of 24k gold. Love these coins. Thanks Mark!
I'm Canadian, knew to stacking. I have bought silver buffalos and will be buying silver maples as the are my sovereign coin. As far as gold I want the buffalo and maples as they're both 9999, Thank for the info education on factionals. Them too. 🤠🇨🇦
Very cool! Congrats on starting your stacking journey!
I used to say the same exact thing as you guys. However after much thought, I think it's best to stick with the 91.67% AGE. If you understand the role that gold initially played throughout finance, you would have to humbly accept that everything that glitters isn't Gold. There's too much risk that comes with trading in 24 karat gold. I saw a video where someone cut out a half ounce of pure gold and replaced the 1/2 ounce gold with tungsten. A rare earth magnet didn't detect it as a fake and it almost passed as a legit gold coin on the X-ray machine. That nearly scared the s*** out of me, and so, I'm sticking with old gold from here on out.👍✌️
No, the contains 24K pure gold, just like the Buffalo. FFS, please understand that.
The design with the eagle flying over the sun is WAYYYY better than both of the other gold eagle designs. The nesting eagles wing looks super abnormal. They need to bring that design back asap
Couldn't agree more! They do it for other coins, they can bring back this design.
well if a real life buffalo had a fight with a real life eagle guess who would win.....exactly
I'm personally more of Gold Buffalo mainly because it's pure gold and the Native American obverse looks so fresh and numismatic looking. I'm not too much of a big fan of the God Eagle because it doesn't really excite me as much. They already have that design on the Saint Gauden's Double eagle, so it's like "eh" to me with the Gold Eagles.
Right on. Thanks for sharing!
Buffalo hands down ! Just wish they made in quarter n half sizes for those us who cant afford to buy an ounce at a time.
Same!
Yes, love the buffalo first, the eagle has that copper sheen I hate in a gold piece. I feel the buffalo design on both sides is more attractive as well.
Thanks for stopping by!
Great video. I haven’t added Buffalo’s to my collection( I’m very new to all this). I think I will though, great looking coin.
I haven’t even considered fractional, because I’ve heard the premiums are very very high. What is you opinion on this, or which video should I watch?
Thanks for watching! Premiums are very high on fractional coins and bars. The smaller you go, the higher the premium. If you can afford the 1oz gold coin, I would go for those. That being said, I also really like fractional gold due to liquidity and trading. I have a lot of videos on this topic, you can search for them on my channel. But here is one to check out. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again! ua-cam.com/video/inwzx3xVHuQ/v-deo.html
The mintage and 4 9s make my choice
Right on! Thanks for watching!
Finally got drawn into my first Buffalo purchase, because the dealer was offering it for slightly less, and I guess I wanted to see a 24kt Gold coin up close and personal. Spot is quite lower presently, and had a couple hundred CC dollars to offset the premium. It is quite stunning up close, but more so for the color, rather than the design. Ripping off the old nickel design is hardly unique, which this coin deserves. Not sure if I would buy any more (over the Gold Eagle), unless it proved to be a cheaper version of stacking Gold.
Congrats!
I'd like to see the mint bring back the reverse of the Eisenhower dollar. That's the Apollo 11 mission patch.
I never specifically thought about how the reverse of the Gold Eagle doesn't match the obverse, but now that you point it out, it's true. I think the Gold Eagle reverse should be the same as the original Saint-Gaudens coin. They used both sides of the buffalo nickel for the gold buffalo, why not both sides for the gold eagle? (in the same way the silver eagle would be awesome with the walking liberty reverse as well).
For these coins my preference is the buffalo for 1oz and eagle for fractional.
Exactly! I don't get why they did it that way.
Michael...omg if the silver eagle had the walking liberty design that would be so freaking sick. Idk why they didn't do that but ur right it would be awesome
I just ordered a 1 OZ Gold Buffalo from JD Bullion can’t wait to compare it to my gold Eagles REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
HAHA! Enjoy your buffalo!
"butt Hurt Cream" 😂🤣😂🤣😂😲
😅🙃
I'd have to go AGE for the simple fact that you can buy them in the fractional form. Although I'd love to spend $2,000 on the buffalo it's not at all in my range at the moment
Thanks! Appreciate you watching!
Buffaloes all day every day and 1/2 and 1/4 oz AGEs for fractional. Love Perth mint Lunar series in 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 sizes but Buffaloes are my only 1 oz coin I stack.
Haven’t read the comments yet to see if there’s going to be a run on Eagle Boy Butt Hurt Cream.
Cheers Brother 🥃
Thanks man! I'm right there with you, have very few 1oz Eagles.
If Buffalos were available in fractional sizes it would be a hands down winner in my opinion. Can't afford a full oz gold, at this time.
100% That would be sweet if they brought it back. I don't want to imagine the premiums on them though.
My preference is gold eagles 1 oz.
I have more type one Eagles than anything. Silver and gold. I Refuse the kindergarten like design on the gold or silver type two Eagles. Only one gold Buffalo, but it is beautiful.
Well said! Thanks for stopping by!
I like both ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Great choices!
#3....gold Libertads for the win due to their low mintages and history from the oldest mint in North America
I AGREE 100 PERCENT
I PUT LIBERTADS NO. 0NE MINTAGES EXTREMELY LOW PROOFS BEAUTIFUL
Haha, they certainly beat out both US coins in terms of mintage. Beautiful proofs and RPs too.
Hmm, think I’ll do 1 oz buffalos and fractional eagles
Buffalo it's beautiful and it's .9999
Buffalo looks nice, but pure gold is too soft. Be very careful when handling.
Gold is gold. Stack what you can afford
Regarding 4:51, On the Obverse of the Type 2 American Gold Eagle coins starting in 2021, there are now only 46 stars, because the 4 stars that have been omitted represented New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska & Hawaii. On the other hand, on the Obverse of Type 1 American Gold Eagle coins from 1986 until 2021, each coin had a total 50 stars which represented each of the States of the Union.
Why would they omit those states?
@@wyattchiordi5132 The United States Mint decided for 2021 to redesign the Obverse of the Type 2 American Gold Eagle coins to have it retrospectively resemble the original design by August Saint-Gaudens from 1907 which at that time had only 46 states in the union. That 46th state was Oklahoma which was admitted to the Union on November 6, 1907. Thereafter New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state on February 14, 1912, Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, and Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959. Personally I would have preferred that all 50 stars remain on the coin just as there are currently 50 stars on the flag of the U.S.A.
Interesting info, thanks!
@@CampbellsCoins In 2009, the United States Mint Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold $20 Coins were made to resemble the original 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens design. However on the Obverse, 4 stars were added to the original 46 stars to give it a total of 50 stars for that year 2009.
I can't believe that for some of your viewers, a "butt-hurt" cream is necessary 😂
Dude, you have no idea...😅
Gold Eagle looks like copper next to the Buffalo. Buffalo by a mile.
100%
I have have both and prefer the look of the eagle but at the end both contain the same amouth of gold so I dont mind mix coin like krugerrand. Saying that I do not stak coin but gold, I am not a coin collector but enjoy diversity and looking at somethink different time to time. for emergency sovereign are my choice been in the uk.
I'm contemplating which one to get right now while were in this dip
Don't think too long, the dip doesn't last forever haha.
Sort of off topic, are the American Silver Eagles also exempt of IRS reporting when you sell them?
Just to make sure, I just bought BOTH🤩
Can’t go wrong with either IMO. Both American, both gold, 100% awesome
I started out with buffalos this year, but I'm getting eagles for the rest of the year because I might have to pack up and move to freedom. Because eagles are and alloy, they're more durable.
That's an interesting point. Thanks Maurice!
Just out then in an air-tite capsule and the coins will be protected
Yes sir, it is a smart move on their part to not offer the buffalo as fractionals, but is it? I would buy some in a heatbeat!
I like the gold buffalo as well. my pet peeve with the U.S. mint is why can't they come up with a new design instead of using old favorites?
Have you seen the designs they come up with for newer coins? I don't think they're capable of coming up with a new design that would become a long lasting classic.
That's a great point! Their design department is lacking for sure. I haven't been wowed in a really long time. It's mostly throwbacks to old designs or slight tweets. The new ones just don't scream AMERICA!
100% Designers of the old coins actually cared.
It's my biggest problem with them as well. Perth does gold swans and kangaroos with changing designs annually, fractional gold bars, silver kookaburras koalas and wedge tailed eagles. Royal Mint does the Royal Arms, Sovereign, Britannia, Beast series. Canada usually has some variety outside of just Maples. Why can't the US Mint do interesting annual bullion series of endemic American wildlife?
Maple gets my vote
I like their redesign.
That’s it🤪
Buffalo is the WINNER.
Great video! Correction, AGE is only 1 9's fine. 91.62% gold vs. the Buffalo is 4 9's fine at 99.99% gold. The Canadian Maple leaf was 3 9's fine at 99.9 and the new one is 4 9's fine at 99.99. They even came out with 5 9's 99.999% pure gold. Get it?
If you melted both coins separately and sold the gold that way..Which one would you get more money for?
Trick question.
I'm getting serious deja vu here. You haven't done this before?
Update: I don't remember the butthole eye comment.
Not yet! But I appreciate your keen observation of my channel. I also appreciate your question because I hate repetitive thumbnails and content. It's just lazy and shows no creativity. I wouldn't want to fall into that rut; it's not good for the audience.
I haven't bought my first Buffalo yet I'm still getting eagles mostly half oz and quarter ounce. The first one ounce coin I buy will probably be a buffalo.
You won't be disappointed!
There is a big price difference between the buffalo and the eagle in Europe. Both are more expensive than any other bullion, but the buffalo is always €80-100 more expensive than the eagle. I guess I’ll just buy one if I ever visit the states again.
im saving specifically for a gold Buffalo
You won't regret it!
Agree with all of that. Especially the butthole eyeball part. Lol.
Hahaha, right on brother. Thanks for stopping by, appreciate you.
Coins should be durable for trade, like the Gold Eagle. The Buffalo is not really a true coin being 24k Gold...
I love the Buffalo 1oz it is beautiful 😍
It really is!
I like the type#1 Eagle, don't like the type#2 at all, I have a Buffalo in the original mint cellophane with the blue printing, when given the Canace I will trade it for a 1986 eagle like that design better front and back they should of left it alone.
I'm glad you like the type 1s. Thanks for watching!
If I needed to travel to other countries and take some gold I wouldn't want it getting beat up so I will stack the Eagles. Also, if gold doubles, triples or more then having fractional will be an advantage! Some 1/4 ouncers might be worth close to $2k! But the buffalo is cooler!
Agree!
Thrice are best.Allare best.
What ever is cheapest! But like buffalo better!
Cheaper is always better.
Buffalo
I prefer pure gold coins, not billon (alloy) coins. So it's the buffalo for me.
