Why I Stopped Buying 22k Gold - 24k vs 22k Gold Coins

  • 24k vs 22k gold and why I stopped buying 22k gold coins to focus on 24k gold instead. I bought American Gold Eagles almost exclusively for nearly a decade before switching to Gold Buffalos and other 24k gold coins. I'm not done with Eagles and I don't have anything 22k coins in general, but this is what I'm up to currently.

Here in New Zealand, Eagles are subject to Goods and Services tax (15%), which you don't recover when you sell unless you're registered for GST. (Unlikely). So lose 6% and another 15% immediately. Pure is the only sensible option.

Such a good video. I’m always rethinking what I like the most. And as for design and security features it’s the Britannia over the maple. I like the Buffalo over the Eagle mostly for its pure golden look and It’s not something I would be dinging up, but those Eagle’s are solid and have a nice look and I actually like the large head eagle on the reverse. I want to buy other coins but I’m not in any hurry right now

I'm still working my way toward my first oz. I am of the notion that my first full 1oz Gold coin will be an American Gold Eagle, although I have always been drawn to the Maple leaf. I want to be able to hold the coin bare in my hand, and I just feel safer with the 22k. Ultimately the price will probably make the decision for me. Your videos are pure eye candy. Thank you so much. Stack long and prosper.

I'm probably different than most here, I have always loved the look of the old 90% US gold. That said I now live in Canada and not only is getting that more difficult but as you mentioned there's tax involved. My recent purchases have been Buffaloes and that's not likely to change for my next purchase.

I like the durability of 90% gold. I like the highly liquid nature of fractional gold eagles as "trade up" gold. But if it's modern bullion 1 ozt coins, then 24K is it due to the international tax implications.

24k is like hospital sterile metal, while 22k pre-1933 US coins are warm, pretty, and durable to be handled. Still 24k is more desired worldwide than impure.

I buy mainly fractional Eagles and Britannia’s and have goals for each. I’m new to this, end July 2021. I prefer 24k and liquidity, my two choices of coins explained. I love the Buffalo, I have one and would like to have more which would be easier if they were minted in fractionals. I do have two different one off fractionals mostly because they look good, are 24k, different and had lower premiums. I don’t know what my future holds related to future purchases but this is what I’m doing now. I’m sure the one off purchases will continue. Always fun seeing part of your collection.

Call me crazy, but I just like the 22k better. For one, most 24k is very reflective…proof, or near proof. I prefer a matte finish. Also, I like coins that look like coins, so more often, actual 19th-20th century coins (Double eagles, 100 Coronas, 50 pesos, etc). Also, the copper alloy in older coins give the gold a slightly orange glow that I love. The yellow in 24k is just not as pretty to me. I love the idea of having a very pure coin, but I just don’t like the way they are made as much.

I’m newer to stacking and just started last year. I’ve never been into a coin shop and only shop with Apmex, JM Bullion, Bullion Exchanges and SD bullion. So I ensure I’m buying from a reputable place and I always check prices against all of those sites before making a purchase. I also purchased a sigma metalytics and test every coin. I started with AGE and of course wanted one of type 1 and 2 so had to get both of those. Then got two buffalos. I then got drawn into the other mints and the fact they are 24k so I got Britannia, maple leaf, Royal arms, etc. got some fun ones too like year of the tiger stuff and a Scrooge McDuck one because it had nostalgia for me since I grew up on that show and always wanted a money bin haha. I buy whatever looks cool to me but I don’t spend way over for proofs or anything. If I’m gonna drop 2k on a coin, I go with whatever excites me. For example, I want a gold libertad but it’s 3500 and I think to myself ok I can buy almost two ounces of something else. Hopefully when 2022 libertads come out I can snag one for not too much premium.

Hi, nice video. I totally agree and see myself in your story. My fist coin was a krugerrand because as a starter that’s the one I heard of in movies and popped up in articles I read before buying. But when it arrived I didn’t understand at first why it wasn’t shiny, I just skipped that part of info before buying I guess 😅. So next coin was the maple leaf that was more as i expected. But then when I bought the kangaroo last year wow that was incredible shiny, so I think the shiny part is so true for beginning stackers haha. But now I only look at the price and size of the coin. For example the philharmonic was to big so I sold it a couple of months later. The eagles in Holland are €100 more then let’s say kangaroo and maple leaf. So my next wil be one of those 😎👍🏻. I also choose coins based on the design- for that reason the Buffalo is the ultimate for its obverse/ reverse. Mexican Libertad would be a second were they not so pricey. Last- the mints putting out reverse proof quality coins at competitive prices is leading me to a greater diversification.

It seems the world trend is definitely toward 24K coins and rounds... most new mint releases, the newer sovereign bullion coins, all bars. While alloyed gold for purposes of better wear had validity for circulated coins, the current non-circulating gold doesn't need it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight 24K-over-alloyed premium come about in the far future on bullion coins. There's already a very slight 9999-over-999 premium on Maple Leafs... kinda strange but it exists.

I do like the 1 oz in 24 ct if I had the choice but my stack is dominated by 22ct gold sovereigns, there are plenty of older ones that are a beautiful gold colour, the more recent years are a bit more rose gold or copper looking which could be a pro or a con depending on the situation. At least with the modern ones they were never circulating coinage so are normally good condition whereas the real old ones were used and it takes a bit more premium to get hold of nice examples. With some countries hitting you with a value added tax on 22k it only makes sense to stack your country of origin’s 22k coin only being they aren’t taxed in your country. 24k is tax free internationally so it makes the most sense to have 2/3rds of your stack 24k. Like the silver folks call junk silver sometimes, “Spending Silver”. 90% silver or 999.9 silver. It’s all about utility and purpose. Diversifying is wise but don’t get to heavy into something that is potentially punitive.

0:00 🤔 Choosing between 22 karat and 24 karat gold coins involves considering aesthetics, popularity, and potential tax implications.
5:42 📊 Popular gold bullion coins like American Gold Eagles and South African Krugerrands are 22 karat, but preferences may vary based on region and buyer demographics.
7:56 🛡 Newer buyers may prefer 24 karat coins for their aesthetics and security features, while older buyers may stick to 22 karat coins due to familiarity and availability.
8:09 💼 Security features, tax implications, and personal preferences play a significant role in determining whether to invest in 22 karat or 24 karat gold coins.
8:55 💰 Despite differences, both 22 karat and 24 karat gold coins remain valuable investments, with individual preferences influencing purchasing decisions.

Pretty and popular are fine for collectors and numismatics, but I actually focus on bullion first, then looks. I look at the premiums for the pretty and popular coins, and it just overwhelms the intrinsic value of the bullion alone. Like buying a pretty vehicle, if it's junk inside, but the markup is for the looks and label, I'll take the sound car and save a few bucks. That means more left over to pick up other precious metals or investments.

Another aspect is the ability to move gold across borders. Many countries have rules for investment grade precious metals to have no or favorable tax. IPM are usually high purity coins.
