How To SAFELY Crack Your Own Neck (Loud Cracks!)

  • Neck pain is the worst. It can give you headaches and gives you sharp pain when you turn your head. In some cases it can become chronic and last for years. Adjusting or Cracking your own neck can give some serious relief from neck pain and stiffness and helps maintain the mobility in your neck. I learned how to crack my neck when I was 16. Years later I got my doctorate in physical therapy and advanced training to learn how to manipulate other people’s necks and now I’m going to show you how I do it. I actually used to have neck, back and knuckle cracking competitions when I was in training to be a missionary. We would all be reading quietly in class when suddenly the room would explode with the sound of joints cracking. It was like a duel. Sometimes I would start, sometimes the other missionary would start but I’m pretty sure I always won.
    Before I show you how to get some extremely satisfying and pain relieving cracks let me tell you when NOT to do this.
    Don’t crack your own neck if you have recently had an injury to the neck or have severe neck pain. It’s best to get checked out by a qualified health care practitioner in those cases.
    I wouldn’t recommend cracking your neck if you have had cervical spine surgery like a cervical spinal fusion.
    If you have numbness, tingling or shooting pain down either arm. This is something you should go see a physical therapist for.
    If you have unexplained dizziness, blurred vision, numbness in the face, especially when turning your head don’t crack your neck and definitely go see your doctor.
    You should know there is a risk when cracking your neck. One risk is that you cause injury to your neck that will be annoying and take longer to get better. The other risk is more serious. There is a very very small chance you can cause injury to an artery in your neck which can lead to a stroke. To put it in perspective, you’re much more likely to get hurt in a car accident, become hospitalized or die from taking anti inflammatories like ibuprofen (which cause 107,000 hospitalizations and over 15,000 deaths each year in the United States. Many people are probably going to crack their neck anyway but if you follow these guidelines, that small risk is even smaller.
    We are going to avoid a big rotation movement of the head and neck. that’s what causes the highest risk. But if you’re not comfortable with the risk then don’t do it. Remember this video is for informational purposes only and as always if you try this at home you do it at your own risk and definitely don’t try to adjust anyone else’s neck for them.
    Now to do this we’re going to move the head slightly back and to the side. So, if you move your head back and to the left you’ll feel some tension build on the right side of the neck especially as you slowly rotate your head to the right. Then with your hand on your jaw or sometimes I’ll put my hand a little on the cheek as well to you apply a little pressure up toward the eye. Just a small movement and you should get one or multiple cracks. Sometimes I will sideband my head a little more to build up more tension to get more cracks. You should only be applying gentle pressure and don’t push through pain if it’s hurting.
    Afterwards you’ll usually feel and instant release of tension in the neck. If you feel like you need to crack your neck all the time, then you probably need to work on some strengthening or see a physical therapist for some specific recommendations and treatment such as a combination of spinal manipulation, dry needling and exercise.

    I have been scared to do it for so long thinking I would die but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and my neck has been hurting all day. I thought I might as well pop my neck and no pain thanks so much you're a life saver.

    How much resistance should we be applying to our hand when we push the opposite direction? When I was in high school and younger I used to be able to crack my neck but I haven't been able to in years. I'm not sure what changed.

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  8 місяців тому +1

      Could be. Sometimes it's hard to relax the neck muscles enough when you do it on your own or sometimes it needs a little more speed which is when it helps to have a professional do it.

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  Рік тому

      You tilt your head back and to the side and the is a slight rotation of the neck as well while keeping your neck muscles as relaxed as you can. Don't force anything. Some people have enough tension in the neck that it's really hard to do on your own.

    • @StronglifePhysiotherapy
      @StronglifePhysiotherapy  Рік тому

      You'd have to push pretty hard to paralyze or internally decapitate yourself, but if you feel uncomfortable trying it then maybe try something else. Some simple neck isometric exercises can help build strength and reduce pain. I'm a member of the big head club too, we gotta keep our necks strong!

    I’ve tried cracking my neck like this for years it’s so stiff nothing happens. Is it that only some people are able to do this? And I’m not scared or nervous when trying. As to say I do push with force in a sitting up posture just like this. Just doesn’t work for me, but I can feel so much tension in there.
