As a Slavic person, I was excited at first, and having seen Henry in period pieces, I knew he'd be a good Witcher. It's just sad that all the complex moral questions, the Slavic mythology and *feel* of the books/games were replaced by a mishmash of fantasy tropes and Games of Thrones-y look. I also still remember the showrunners blaming Covid for not having actual Slavic actors in their Slavic-inspired production. ugh.

The books don't have too many slavic references. Andrzej Sapkowski (author of The Witcher books) criticized slavic fantasy and said in many interviews that while writing The Witcher, he wanted to show that all the books inspired by slavic culture are cheap in what they do, so he based The Witcher on multiple cultures, mostly nordic. Video games have way more slavic inspired monsters.
      Some examples:
      - bruxa is portuguese
      - silvan is roman/greek
      - djinni is of arabic origin
      - dragon is in every culture, same for basilisk
      - doppelgänger is german
      - siren and driads from Brokilon are from greek mythology
      - kelpie, werewolf, sukkub, wild hunt, amphisbene, griffin, manticore show up in multilple mythologies, mostly greek, roman and anglosaxon
The story is also inspired by many cultures - tales from France, Denmark (Andersen), Germany (Brothers Grimm), some nordic references (Ragh nar Roog, Naglfar, Hemdall, Kambi, Freyja), celtic (Merlin, Galahad, Nimue).
From slavic mythology there's striga and kikimore, I'm not sure if something else. If you have more slavic examples, you can throw them in a reply.

@@Kondiqq Just because the names are different, doesn't mean there aren't similar creatures in Slavic mythology (with some exceptions). And by Slavic mythology, of course I don’t mean a single particular country, but many around Central and Eastern Europe + the Balkans. There are witches, vampyrs, rusalki, vrkolaks, various kinds of woodland creatures and spirits, demons, etc, which I'm glad at least the games showcased (hence the books/games in my comment). That’s the thing - Sapkowski might have consciously tried to be above writing something _specifically_ Polish, Slavic or nationalistic-sounding, but *his identity has an effect on his writing* - the "feel" from the style, tropes, the way he uses language, the dark humour, the melancholy, the topics of state, power, corruption, tradition, superstition, the lesser evil… Hearing some of the names of characters and places… They rang different for me, as someone from the ex-Eastern bloc. The way he describes some cities and landscapes sounded familiar to me because I’ve visited such places here. Some people’s behaviour and mentality is familiar - it’s still present these days. This is why when analysing literature, we look at the author’s own backstory - it shapes the way you see the world. And in a similar way, our identities as readers will have an effect on how we imagine these stories, how we interpret them. So, sure, put a jinn in the story - doesn’t matter, I know I’m not reading anything like 1001 nights. Put an Arthurian flavour to it - it’s still not an Arthurian legend. I think this is why so many people were impressed with the games - they took those elements and really emphasised that Slavic feel which would be new and interesting to the gamers around the world. Hearing my country’s folklore in the ost? More, please! *The show exists because of the games' popularity anyway* and since they kept talking about the "Slavic fantasy", I thought, hey, we might be getting actual representation that's not the usual (iykyk)! I thought they would try to take *the best of the books and games* and give us something different. Instead, we got another generic fantasy that has just several really good moments (which Letalis has touched upon in his reviews). I have a lot to say, but I’d have to write a whole analysis and I have neither the time, nor the motivation now that I’ve seen the show.

What's the funniest about this whole thing to me, as a Polish person, is that the S2 bombed so hard in Poland and was met with so much hate and disappointment, that now in turn S3 has close to no promotion here. Like, I live in Warsaw and so far have only seen ONE (1) promotional poster and it wasn't even very visible, just on the inside of a bus stop. I actually chuckled, I was like "oh yeah, S3 is due in a couple of weeks, no way I'm watching XD". For comparison: when S1 was coming out, it was on all the biggest billboards in the city center. It gives me this weird kind of satisfaction that us, as a fandom, did such a good job of being outraged, while simultaneously feeling defeated, that Netflix can afford to prolong everyone's torture and refuses to just let this show die with some dignity left.

NO THANKS! TV here in the US has given us Dresden Files... They are still minor characters though - unlike Cahir, Fringilla and Yennefer, who live, but got character assasinated to such an unbelievable extend, that they might as well be dead and replaced by psycho-dopplers. Most people didn't seem to care back then, though, even when the writing was on the wall and it was obvious that this shitshow is dead on arrival. Vilgefortz I imagine appears more similar to someone from Ofieri in this season and they pulled more closer to 90% of season 2 from their butts not just the ending. Maybe Dandelion and Vilgefortz will put together a goth band. They should've ended season 2 like in the books with Geralt basically on the brink of death after fighting the brothers and Reince, would have been a great cliffhanger for those not familiar with the books and intertwin the fight the Yennifer teaching Ciri at the temple of Melitele. The could have given Nenneke and Jarre a proper introduction and set up Ciri meeting the unicorn in the desert and the events during equinox. So many great moment that have had no set up that may not even happen in this one dimensionally written show.

He knew that moving the action to USA would completely deprive his work of identity because Metro 2033 takes place in Russian subway stations and those are very different from US ones. The same is with Witcher. By americanising it, Witcher completely has lost its identity. It's no longer a unique fantasy world. It's now just another clichè American fantasy.

I'm a bit confused. The first Witcher game takes place after the last book in which Geralt seemingly died to a lynch mob and a pitchfork. The games make it so he survived, and continues the story. But in the games the Wild Hunt is introduced through 3 games as new villains while it seems they have appeared much sooner in the books.

    • @xLetalis

The games and the books macro story connects pretty well. It's not like "the games make it so he survived", his survival was very much expected and described when the books were read. I'm not gonna go into the details, but it's all there in the books. What the games introduced is the idea of Geralt having amnesia. That's all well described in the games on the other hand.

Hey! I was wondering if you (or anyone else reading this) could help me with a question I have about Blood and Wine: many years ago I saw a video on UA-cam where Geralt had left Toussaint after visiting it but before saving it from the whole vampire crisis - in the video Geralt talked with knights who had been sent asking for him to return to help with the vampire crisis and if Geralt says no the knights also say that they cannot return without him. I tried finding this video, but UA-cam is so cluttered that I can't seem to find it. I don't know if it was you who actually made this video or someone else, but I thought it's worth asking if you at least know about this scenario in the game

I finally read the books and to be honest I have even more troubles understanding Lauren and her decision to change the story to push for female driven characters and story. Even in 2023 The witcher saga can easily be considered a heavy feminist propaganda so she should love the books and should not have a problem with depicting them "as is".
Even though I wholehartedly hate the woke propaganda we are being fed at every opportunity I actually liked the books.
I gave everything a pass because I believe we shouldn't measure the story and Sapkowski's motives by todays standards. Back in the 80's when Sapkowski started writing the books, the views and world depicted in the books weren't written to push agenda (because back then the mainstream "woke" agenda didn't exist, especially in Poland) but rather to create something innovative, fresh and different (and maybe even a little thought provoking/controversial) from what was already there and I see it as a plus even though if it was written today it would make me roll my eyes and would grind my gears and I don't think I would read the whole saga

This is so sad. Honestly, all this is gonna make me want to do is replay the games, because while they had a bunch of changes - they were really great in not touching the original books but rather continuing the story in the style of an AU (alternate universe) fanfiction that stayed very true to the general themes of the books and it's worldbuilding. They botched a few characters in the game, but for the most part they knew their lore inside and out and made basically the best work of fanart one could ever make about an original source material. No TV series adaptation or spin-off today can hold a candle to what the Witcher videogames did for the book series. The only thing that comes close might be the original Lord of the Rings movie trilogy (in terms of adaptation of the world, tho not comparable since that was a straight up adapation while TW was an AU-esque sequel). It made them popular while not desecrating the original in any way, and it managed to tell a great interactive story.

I'm Lithuanian, and while there was a cold war between Russia and the West, 80% of Western literature was censored, but it was full of Slavic literature, Slavic fairy tales and legends, many of them were illustrated with a Slavic vision of how one or another character should look. The way Witches III came out, a lot of the characters were like from my childhood fantasy, the way I saw them, it was very unique and interesting and very different from the American ones. but netflix's witcher is some kind of alien culture that doesn't like those specific Slavic features, completely alien, see 1000 clichés together and get fed up with them, nothing authentic, just part of another, unpalatable culture that is forced upon them. I'm not a racist or some kind of homophobe, but what netflix offered does not fit into my understanding of the Slavic fairy tales of the world. it's more like some kind of mockery. It's as if Indian and Chinese film companies united and made a film about American civil wars, with dancing rajas and flying monks.

She has nipples so pale that they are only visible by their contours, or a pale face (”a pale triangular face” is a repeated description throughout the books) draped by black curls/tresses. This is the same for other characters, physically and behaviorally, like the “ashen-pale” or “very pale” Fringilla who has a strong attraction to Geralt, “I enjoy... having your eyes on me” and they were having sex for two months straight (she was trying to keep him there for her group, but she had been more moved by him) when he was in Toussaint.
