I didn't really hear much from the community talking about that particular scene. It was kinda overlooked imo . It wasn't even nominated in the Crunchyroll awards for best fight scene.
@@hafreeze13 u been living under a rock lol, imo its overused, i see this scene at least 20 times a week on twitter and it always blows up. Also it wasn't a fight scene so it won't be nominated but i agree, crunchyroll really messed with aot this year. It deserved a lot of nominations.
Saotome Alto You can say it’s good for anime, but is it really good for the viewer? A classic is mostly a thing that represented yourself/community in a certain time. If you can say that you don’t consider any show this year a classic, then you just consumed the shows without genuinely liking them. Consuming anime for the sake of consuming and nothing else. Watching without having fond memories, just like many people that go to the cinema, watches a movie and totally forget about it after. Finding shows that have a place in your mind afterwards, is rewarding and gives a nice feeling of nostalgia and fulfillment.
Yh!! Well he did say that they were more good anime to watch....so maybe he forgot or he didn't watch it...it didn't get over looked....well there are also other comedy good anime too
Your observation at the end of the video is very thought-provoking. I believe the reason why you feel this way is because it’s harder to identify the masterpiece when it is amongst high quality shows, and there are no obvious standouts in the crowd. The popularization of anime has resulted in us getting an incessant stream of unique IPs every season to accommodate viewers’ divergent tastes, but this has the effect of lessening the perceived impact of a show, since you’re constantly forming positive associations with likeable shows. I don’t believe this is a terrible consequence, in fact, I think more than anything this teaches us to appreciate what we experience and incites us to reflect upon what we observe. Another excellent video Garnt!
I think some of the issues with finding "The new Classics" Is also episode lengths. Back before popularity, you'd have 24-26 episodes per season. A lot of time to develop characters, stories, philosophies and world building. The exceptional shows would sometimes get a movie and occasionally a second season that would then leave you wanting more. Now a days when you look at series you have 12 episodes, bonus ova's (which promote nothing but extra encounters), multiple seasons that features a new plot/villian but not enough growth, or the one season that's easily forgotten. I agree that there's a high amount of quality being produced now. Maybe it's just that we're getting older and what we have as "Classics" are so embedded into us that we just don't or can't see anything that's comparable to how these early shows touched us back then.
This is great for people with niche tastes though, they don't have to wait 5 years for something to come along that blows them away, although the 50+ years of anime should mean that there's something for anyone anyway.
Agree 100%. By having anime being this big now we have reached the point where the quality needed to become a masterpiece is just super super high, maybe too high to be realistically reached. However, while it may not be a terrible consequence I know why Gigguk feels melancholic. There was a great sense of camaraderie before the mid 2000s of anime where everyone you meet who was an anime fan basically all saw the shows you watched. This created this community that felt very close to each other. It may have been exclusive but I can't blame anyone that has fond nostalgic memories of those years (I do definitely). I think it's not so much about there not being classics anymore, but that by having anime become mainstream, we've lost the sense of community we once had. Anime has now become fractured just like any kind of mainstream media.
@@WAIICRYSTALROSE That's a good point. Perhaps it can be said that first seasons these days have more of a promotional function than ever before; you watch 12 episodes, you're left on a cliffhanger, and now you can either hope a next season is on the way (and wait for it) or continue the series by reading the source material.
@@DeuSCaNoN I understand this quite well, I grew up in a time when most around me didn't care for and sometimes even shunned any form of anime. So it's true that at the time, meeting someone who was a fan was a pleasant surprise and oftentimes they were familiar with your favourite shows. However, I really like that we've reached a point where anime is popular enough to be talked about publicly just like any other media, and I'm thankful we get so many amazing series each year because it gives us something to look forward to.
Gigguk, I can understand your perspective on your statement near the end of the video. Anime has changed, for the better and for the worst. Large corporations like Netflix and Amazon are pouring money into the anime industry. But like you said, we don't necessarily have that one defining anime that would represent an entire generation yet alone a year. Because the fandom is now bigger than it used to be. But in my opinion, I think we haven't strayed to far from our roots. For example, 2018 was a great year for anime and for me too. Me and my mother both watched Violet Evergarden together an she loved it. She was invested so much, that she even balled her eyes out from a few episodes. After that she recommended her mother to watch it and she enjoyed it and cried her eyes out too. Introducing my family to something I love and finding out their interested in it has brought us closer. And that's something as anime fans we always wanted. We always wanted everyone to see and enjoy our garden of Eden.
Teenage Pigs Don't Dream of Bunny Girls would do better if it kept name as it was.Slice of life / sci-fi / occult and it works.AND IT'S NOT COPY OF MONOGATARI , I WATCHED ALL MONOGATARI.
The anime was fucking terrible and overhyped to shit. I'm actually disappointed that it not only was compared to anime of the likes of oregairu, but even got a higher rating than oregairu on MAL (not that it really matters anyway, though).
yeah i can't believe. i remember waiting for new episode of promised neverland while screaming , laughing my ass off when watching kaguya-sama , flaming domestic girlfriend , seeing mob psycho s2 everywhere on the internet and shitting on malty with everyone else , like it was yesterday .
@@dlxtime2380 actually i don't know. i liked every year of anime. my favorite is still kinda 2016. idk it's hard to choose. every year had more than 10 good shows.
@@dlxtime2380 well for me its very weird that every year there will always be that one season full of best anime. For me if i can remember; summer anime in 2016, spring and fall anime in 2017, summer and fall anime in 2018 and of course winter anime in 2019.
Yo Gigguk - quick note about the whole 'further than the universe' thing, in case you don't know: from what I've read, it's a reference to how from Japan, Antarctica is further away than escaping the atmosphere and reaching outer space. Just thought it was interesting; in case you already knew this and was just going along with the joke, then mah bad. Thanks as always for your content, Sorayori was my AOTY as well.
Considering that ISS flies around 400 km above sea level, pretty much the capital of the neighbor country is further than the universe (unless you live in the Vatican) :D And yes, Sorayori had the biggest impact on me in the last 3 years. In my mind AOTY as well, easily.
It just might be me but I love every video gigguk makes even if I don't agree with him I enjoy it and I love how much effort he puts into them. Hopefully this will continue in 2019 and hopefully he will get 2mil subs keep up the hard work
between violet evergarden, after the rain and a place further than the universe, i had so many comfy calm tea sessions. i really learned the value of having something to look forward to all day, waiting for it to get dark, and brewing up your tea and fetching whichever snacks you'd saved or bought for just that episode. and then, just relax entirely for 20 minutes. rest of the year didnt really have any tea-worthy shows, but winter alone made it the best year yet for me
How could you do anything of that watching Violet Evergarden? I was too busy crying in fetal position, at times I couldn't even watch an episode in one go
@@1207rorupar i managed, i would fiddle with my hot tea and eat the snack in the beginning and settle in, then i could drink the cool tea easily while the feels build up in the latter half, worked out pretty well
For me my number one show of the year was Banana Fish. Not just for the relationship but for the portrayal of abuse and hardships, showing sometimes in the end even if life feels better because you have people on your side and you've created happy memories, your past always can catch up with you. It doesn't sugarcoat depression and abuse rather than showing it in it's most revealing and disturbing form, I could feel ash's pain and I grieved his hardships along with him. I love this show with all my heart and the meaning truly resonated with me. I'd reccomend this a watch to anyone who watches anime because in my mind it is a masterpiece.
Banana Fish had me crying, laughing, dying on the inside, at the edge of my seat, and at the very end of it: my mouth hanging open in disbelief. Why can't one of the most traumatized humans in fiction ever just have happiness? Why? Why must you do this world?
No these Banana Fish comments are killing me! I'm waiting for the hype to die down but you fans are one of the most passionate ones I have seen. I just know if I watch it now my expectations would be unrealistically high. I wish I saw the show randomly before I knew it was good.
I'm so glad Gigguk is talking about Banana Fish. Went to take a look at the Crunchyroll awards and was sorely dissapointed by the lack of Banana Fish there.
The original manga series is very old (finished 25 years ago) so I don’t expect everyone to know what would happen to these men in anime. It was very famous back in old time when gay theme is still rare. I would like to say lots of Asian fujoshi watch this anime knowing all the plot and still get attached.
@@ShacoPL No details were really given as to how, and I was already spoiled that this character suffers from another video. Sometimes it is about the journey not the destination I guess.
The real reason we can no longer have a year with a ‘classic’ is probably mostly to do with the constant increase in quality over the years. In those Golden Years, there were really only a handful of shows, and an even smaller number of amazing shows. Those Classics were able to keep people talking because there were much longer stretches of time before “the next big thing in anime” came along. Not to mention many of those shows are longer than the 12-13 episode length seasonal anime have adopted. In a day in age where every season has at least a handful of incredibly well made and enjoyable shows, there is always a new thing to talk about. The fandom is constantly moving forward at such a quick rate that we never leave ourselves time to reflect on the past. We never leave ourselves time to create long lasting fond memories. It’s almost sad to think about. Anime has become mainstream, and continues to grow and provide better and better shows each and every season, but we’ve lost something that used to define anime’s past: Lasting memories.
To add onto this, I think that it may be a matter of perspective and interest. To someone like me who didn't watch every anime that came out this year, I could look back and say, yeah, those shows I really really liked from this year are going to stick with me forever. When you consume so much content, like Gigguk or any other hardcore anime fan, it becomes more difficult for an anime to leave a lasting impression. However, for a casual viewer like myself, there's not a lot of hopping from show to show with no time to rest in between. I'm certain that in 10 years from now, there'll be shows from 2017 and 2018 that I'll remember very fondly. Also, it's hard to argue that Boku no Hero Academia didn't become a classic - there are so many people across the world who love that show.
@@atanuchakravarty486 I disagree. It may not be, say Marvel or DC mainstream, but is it still mainstream. Beyond just random non anime youtubers, you have rappers and other artist and famous people who watch it now. Or at least are open about it. A few years ago In my mcjrotc, almost everyone watched anime. MHA and others are what's popular, sure. But anime as a whole can no longer be called a niche and mha and them are still anime. People are still watching an anime, popular or not, which will inevitably lead to more shows that they watch.
I just finished Made in Abyss, and holy shit give me season 2 already! Kinema Citrus announced Shield Hero Season 2 and 3! Two seasons! Just give me Season 2 already.
I hate that feeling when you realize, "Oh crap. I have a real life and I cant keep up with these shows anymore." Because I know I'll keep bookmarking and promising I'll watch these shows in the future, but deep inside I definitely know I'll never have the time in my life to ever catch up on these... Enjoy anime when you can boys :(
I am turning 29 this year but I still find time to watch and boy this year is full of very good anime with less than 15 episodes so you can definitely finish them in one off work day.
Ha, like I've always said, if you have time to sleep, you have time to watch it. The hard part is if you fall behind. watching a few episodes over several days isn't difficult, but if you've got several episodes backed up from missing a week it becomes harder.
Evidently I know what you mean. Attending college has slowed down my anime viewing greatly and it sucks even more since theres so many freaking shows to watch! *I hope 4Kids still needs someone to watch all of their anime*
@@heart9270 That's a problem, Animes with less than 15 episodes are the ones that didn't get watched much so they couldn't continue and, let's be honest, if you find a nice 13 episodes anime *Coff Coff Bunny Girl Senpai* (In term of romance that anime is amazing even if it's basically Bakemonogatari + Charlotte) and you really start getting into it, when it ends and you know there will not be any second season you get kinda depressed, animes with 24/25 are far better because the stories can get developed more and you don't feel depressed when it ends, but you feel satysfied
I like Mikasa best as anime is not realistic either. If she says nothing and kills all me like.Zero Two is more sexy , Mai is cuter ... I need to clean myself by some 80s fighting show now.I'll see myself out.
You did a rant back in 2013 when you criticized the 2012 year of anime to have no classics and now in 2019 you can look back on 2011 as a year that had classics. I think only time will tell how people remember this year of anime.
Very true, it's difficult if not damn near impossible to realise what a classic is the same year it comes out imo. I mean, they may not be classics but 2012 did have a fair few popular shows with staying power start up. Namely Sword Art Online, Girls Und Panzer, Psycho-Pass, and Highschool DxD -- all shows that still get talked about plenty today 7 years later for better or worse.
@@SythonToTheZ HDxD... for real? its probably because it has 3 season... so ofc people still remember that, same as SAO but.. it still have left a mark in the anime industry
ShinSekai Yori is definitely a classic in 2012. It's terrible animation and very unique water paint style graphics choice with stunning scenery will age well. Psycho pass likely also can sit as a classic. But graphics will age badly since it looks so digitally made and tech focused.
Watched "A Place Further than the Universe" because of Gigguk's recommendation and I loved it! Would have slipped under my radar otherwise so I'm happy he brought it to my attention.
I'd argue that one of the reasons classics have become much more rare is because the general quality of anime have really gone up. What if we only got violet evergarden, a place further than the universe or (insert really good show here) amidst a pile of trash? Would they then be regarded as classics?
This is exactly my view. It's the 'Mona Lisa' effect: they're not classics because 'they are classics', they're classics because it they were some of the few shows out in the West and everyone in the small anime community was talking about it.
The Promised Neverland looks pretty good so far, but it's not shaping up to be a classic yet. Reasonable execution, but just from the first episode a lot of people are going to be put off by its constant reverence of tag.
I found out a couple days ago that in rascal loves bunny girl the beach scenes with each character is a symbol for the fear of change. This is because the ocean itself is regarded as a symbol for "voyage into the unknown" in literature. notice that each episode ending is the character of focus walking down the beach, that is because they are experiencing immense change in their lives at the moment of that episode, and the ocean symbolizes their unknown and unstable future (such as adolescence makes the world seem).
I will say "Yes" and I don't think it's Monogatari copy.General tone of all Monogataris since Bake to Owari S2 was different. It may be same themes but you can find those themes in many other anime (albeit mostly not that good).
Y’know, hearing Gigguk talk and Banana Fish and calling it one of the most overlooked anime of 2018 and giving it an honest and positive review made me so happy!!! Honestly, a part of me didn’t think that Banana Fish would get some of the attention that I personally think it deserves, especially from a big anime reviewer in the anime community, but just the fact that he did talk about it and didn’t stuff it into the yaoi category just because it has some homoerotic tones in the beginning filled me with so much joy!!!! (And the quick review on Dragon Pilot was awesome too!!!! XD) Congrats Gigguck, welcome to the Banana Fish family. P.S Holy flippin cow that a lot of likes thanks everyone!!! XD
MeowMeow Chan It’s gay so it’s unnatural to watch I get unnatural goosebumps watching it I feel disgusted because its gay I understand the appeal of the story and the appealing factors but because it’s yaoi I can’t stomach it
Ibrahim Al-Otaibi If that’s how you feel just because there’s a gay relationship at the center of it, that’s your opinion. But please let correct you on one thing, Banana Fish is not a yaoi, a yaoi is an anime that centers in the sexual and physical relationships between two men. Nothing like this happens in Banana Fish, unless you want to count the times Ash has been raped and sexually abused. Banana Fish is much closer to a shonen-ai, a genre of anime that centers around the emotional side of a romantic relationship between two men.But really, Banana Fish isn’t any of these two genres, it just has some shonen-ai tones more than anything. If you want to be digested at an anime because it’s “gay” that’s your opinion, I’m NOT trying to change it. Just use your terms correctly, because “yaoi” and “shonen-ai” and “dark gritty action mystery” and all very separate distinct genres.
Nemanja Stankovic I didn’t know that Banana Fish came close to SAO in popularity!! (I mean, I knew that people were talking about it, but not THAT many people.) That’s pretty cool!! Where did you hear that from? Could you a provide a link to the website/graph/statistics?

You'll never get that feeling of "instant-classic" in the modern anime climate, not unless we get a terrible season where 1 or 2 great shows can overwhelm our perspective. The older shows that we acknowledge to be classics stood out as classics because they were incredible shows that completely dominated otherwise standard-grade periods of time. In 2018, we got classic after classic after classic. If you were to imagine Megalobox, Violet Evergarden, a Place Further than the Universe or a few other shows from 2018 standing by themselves in a year without (m)any other stand-outs, I bet you can see yourself seeing them as classics. These shows are of a quality that deserves the reputation that was given to those old classics, but...it's kind of like that idea the Incredibles plays around with. "And when everybody's super...no one will be." These shows are all classics, they just seem less like it because their shockwaves couldn't be as great when they were all interfering with each other's. When those older classics landed, their shockwaves weren't nearly as interferred with.
I think that what defines a show as "classic" was never its popularity or quality, but it's universality. And there is no universality in the anime community anymore. That may be okay, or not. But I kind of miss it.
I don't understand what you mean by universality. Are you referring to titles that helped to define and popularize certain genres in anime? If that it is the case I agree. But I also think nostalgia plays a big role in what is defined as classic. Give these shows another 10 to 15 years and I think that some of them might be considered ones too.
@@satoriakihiro1283 I guess the reason we don't seem to have many classics nowadays is because we have way too much stuff that could be classified as *Classics.* And when everything's a classic, nothing will be. 😁
I think it's because we had sooo many GREAT shows that it's hard to look back and say, "bro do you remember THAT one?!" When a season only has 2 to 3 extremely hyped shows it's so much easier for the community to be like, wow those will be remembered. No shit, they were the only ones watched. This year had so many great anime that you could say damn did you see that masterpiece and people could be like nah i was to busy watching this masterpiece.
BH Yeah, that’s totally true. There were so many great anime in 2018 that none of them will be remembered more than the others. It makes it difficult for any of them to stand out from the rest.

Thanks for mentioning Banana Fish! I really loved it, and I agree that it was underwatched. 2018 was indeed a great year. The fact that it's so hard to decide on the AOTY alone shows that. As for the final thoughts you gave in the video, I kind of agree, but I'd say there is one series that will most probably receive a classic status, and that's Devilman. It's just so unique in comparison to other shows these days, just like any other classic anime was at it's time.

I agree with the last part you said about classics so much. While i enjoy the shows of today, nothing gives me the same feeling i got from those classics of a past era. I'm feeling more and more like anime is becoming like Marvel movies in a sense...
To anyone who hasn't watched Banana Fish yet: Go fucking watch it. You will feel so much emotion from the legitimately _real_ feeling relationship between Ash and Eiji you will be crying in your bedroom corner for weeks. A god damn underrated *masterpiece*

I'm pretty sure that Seishun Buta Yarou will be considered a classic. But only if they release the second season. Otherwise it will be forgotten like everything. I really want the second season not because I personally would enjoy it more than a second season of some other shows that totally deserve it more, but because I feel like it needs it.
@@koberburwa I doubt Bunny Girl will be considered a classic. It had the best first 3 episodes then it spiraled down from there into good arcs, mediocre arcs and good arcs again. It's quality wasn't consistent. The last classic I can think of is Made in Abyss (That show is brilliant).
In regards to your 'final word' I do agree with the fact that anime has really strayed from the 'classical' 'seasonal shows' that dominated our hearts when they aired, but I would never say that it is anything other than a benefit. I like to think of these new seasons straying from the classics as a growth in the community. When I think back to when there were only a couple of good 'classic' shows airing as you listed that were extremely popular like evangelion, gurann lagann, etc, I see it as a sort of disadvantage as the community would only stretch their minds to what was the 'norm'. Here in 2018 we got sooooo much new shows that allowed us socially to delve into the season with a plethora of waifus, husbandos, great fight scenes, incest shows, etc. I feel the past was something that in fact did inspire the community to begin to talk about the future, but now with so much conversations about all the new ideas and concepts found in contemporary shows, I see is as a pure benefit for this community. Today with my current friends group we are almost never talking about a single show (except me cuz I like favourites). We talk about everything about the season, not just the best show of the season. Not just the classic 'norm' of the season.
alex bel oh boy i so feel you, I'm probably the only one who watches classics (nge, bebop, ttgl etc) in my circle of friends and they keep talking about seasonal animes
On the one hand, some "classics" became such because they didn't have good competition, so this is certainly a benefit. On the other, some "classics" became such because of how profound they were. 2011 may have had a lot of anime that I followed at once (even though 2018 had more anime, the number I could watch hasn't increased much), but it did have Madoka Magica, which was one of the most uniquely-written/directed shows I've ever seen. It took Japan and the otaku anime community by storm, even spilling into the mainstream without being broadcast in the West. It's stuff like that that jumps out and says "It'll be hard to forget about me" because it isn't just a great version of what it looked like. It was a great version of something nothing else looked like. That defines a "classic" to me.
@@Junosensei But was it unique because it was superior or was it superior because it was unique? To put it another way, would it have had that same impact if it aired alongside other shows with the same high standard of quality? If yes, which is certainly possible, then fantastic, a truly outstanding masterpiece can indeed occur, but wishing for only shows of that high caliber is folly, because if every show is that good, none of them can stand out like that. That's where we are now, and I for one love it. More good stuff is by definition an improvement. That said, I can't speak about Madoka specifically since I never watched it. Not a huge Magical Girl fan and call me a sucker, but I hate shows with super dark, psychological endings. So based on how my brother tried to sell it to me, I gave it a hard pass. That's not why I watch anime, especially not back then, but even so I have nothing but respect for well crafted art. I'll trust your judgement on whether or not any show I haven't seen is a masterpiece or a "classic", at least until I verify it myself.

It's been a while since an anime got to me on such an emotional level but this one just kept haunting me. Definitely on my top 5 anime of all time or even higher, and AOTY no doubt. The characters are so beautifully written in such a raw realistic way. The plot was really good, always keeping you on edge, the way they handled the mature themes was phenomenal and the whole setting made it one hell of a rollercoaster. @@konundra I am certain shows like AOT, MHA, and Jojo would becomes classics, even death note was a new fresh thing people crazed over when it came out. Classics serve as examples for the future and the epitome of all that was good about the time period of the industry they released at
Agreed. To go out of the anime industry plenty of films and Tv shows are now classics but were no where near the status when they were first released. Even anime that was great on its own merit like Bebop had the huge advantage of being great because many of the shows surrounding it were either good, bad, or just passing the minimum. With 2018 being the year almost saturated with great shows it’s harder to see which ones, if any, will be that year’s defining anime or even join the pantheon of “one of the greatest anime ever” period.
@@bakendorf_4802 which is why it is almost impossible to know which anime will be a classic. It's a retrospective view of what represents a time period.
Honestly, the only thing I liked about that show was the OP (which is fucking amazing) and the fact that since they killed off 90% of the cast that there probably won’t be a season two (like School Days). The animation was nice, but everything else was just like... no.

Is that an Incredibles reference?

That banana fish ending BROKE MY HEART
I felt like if I was one of those who left on episode 3, I would die.
Banana fish seems mad sus..... Lol

Niiiiiiiiice! Gigguk should quote you on that.
Well said mate, this should get pinned
anime hasn't become mainstream. Only a handful of shows like MHA and co have become mainstream.

Notice their movements and reactions too.

It’s gay so it’s unnatural to watch I get unnatural goosebumps watching it I feel disgusted because its gay
I understand the appeal of the story and the appealing factors but because it’s yaoi I can’t stomach it
Ibrahim Al-Otaibi If that’s how you feel just because there’s a gay relationship at the center of it, that’s your opinion.
How is it overlooked , it came close to SAO in popularity ... Every third comment is about it ,,,

It's 2020 and Violet Evergarden still pulls my heart strings.
@@MercenaryX10A Couldn't have said it better myself!
Honestly I'd consider popteamepic a classic. Yes I don't know what is wrong with me either.
Spot on.
A Place Further Than The Universe was indeed my Anime of The Year. 😁
Hahaha i bet gigguk choose yorimoi but is a tough year though
@@satoriakihiro1283 I guess the reason we don't seem to have many classics nowadays is because we have way too much stuff that could be classified as *Classics.* And when everything's a classic, nothing will be. 😁
I think it's because we had sooo many GREAT shows that it's hard to look back and say, "bro do you remember THAT one?!" When a season only has 2 to 3 extremely hyped shows it's so much easier for the community to be like, wow those will be remembered. No shit, they were the only ones watched. This year had so many great anime that you could say damn did you see that masterpiece and people could be like nah i was to busy watching this masterpiece.
yeah that actually make sense , and we have so many good show in every genre too.

Saaame. Top 5 of the decade for me.
We won't know if they're classics yet, only time and nostalgia will tell
But great seasonal animes are great, and "classics" were just great seasonal anime with no decent competition.
You know Alex you are definitely right
On the one hand, some "classics" became such because they didn't have good competition, so this is certainly a benefit.
*literally two months after 2018 has ended*
Gigguk: Appropriate amount of time to judge if these shows are classics

After I finished it I had to sit for like an hour in bed and just let it all sink in, and I just kept thinking about it for the rest of the week.
