- Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows is the final film in the Lego Bionicle Miramax trilogy. Yes, I'm finally doing it! Is it better than Mask of Light or Legends of Metru Nui, or is it another beast entirely?

Genuinely the Thirstiest story arc in all of Lego.

Fun fact regarding Sidorak's death:
Aside from rare cases, when someone dies in the Matoran Universe, they're revived on a spacw station called the Red Star, where they're supposed to be fixed up and teleported back. However, the teleportation system is broken so they're stuck.
Sidorak was so flattened, he *_couldn't_* be revived. He's so pathetic, he didn't even make it to the afterlife.
Don't forget there are basically zombies on the Red star
"Who have you been talking to, Vakama? Who's put these thoughts in your head!?"

I haven't watched this movie in 5-10 years, but that line made me laugh really hard and out loud.
Vakama's VA was also in Death Note. He was L. And was a superman regular appearing in Smallville and played a soldier in man of steel.

"A weirdd blend of strange ideas that somehow works" - So basically this movie captures the essence of Bionicle perfectly.
Fun Fact: Roodaka’s voice actress Kathleen Barr also voiced Gali in the first movie
another fun fact: she also voiced Wheezy from Dragon Tales.
as well as Dot Matrix from Reboot.
When I was a kid I didn’t notice Roodaka’s intense sensual energy. Looking back at her as an adult it’s really surprising she’s in a kid’s movie.
If you look back at any of your childhood media you’ll start to notice a LOT more of that in places you wouldn’t expect. The kind of things kid shows and movies could get away with is hilarious.

@@artistanthony1007 that show was pretty violent and dark.
Wait until you learn that all members of her race look like that, even the males.
I've always liked the more bestial Bionicle characters since I was a kid (the Rakshi were my favourite, but I had one or two Visorak), but now I'm grown up I gotta say - Roodaka pushes all the right buttons for me. 10/10 would be corrupted by her again.
Fun Fact: The Toa Hagah sets were originally meant to be Toa Nidhiki and Toa Dume
Given that Norik has the same mask as Dume, that does make sense.
Something fun I noticed in the fight between Vakama and Matau: Matau is green with red eyes, Vakama is red with green eyes. Constrasts, thats nice.

I think Borok va are the most adorable thing ever and nobody can prove me otherwise seriously though their like cute Borok helpers that help em, when their Krana gets killed they just plop in a new one. Also sometimes they give living Borok a different type of Krana to help them out.
“You don’t send a king to do a queen’s job.” 😁
Poor Sidorak never knew what he got himself into. Which is true to almost all of Roodaka’s victims through the story. They all think they can figure her out and use her, but in the end she always outplays them. That’s why I love her as a villain. She is competent and almost always plays her cards right. Eventually her deals and betrayals catch up to her, but she is always a survivor.
Imma admit even as a kid I took a big liking for the Villainess. May or may not awakened my liking for Robot Gals-
well she is hot
She’s miiiiiiine
god, roodaka was SUCH a sexual awakening for me. she's the reason i adore the archetype of a seductive villainess that manipulates the hero with her lustful nature.
Is Rudaka a dominatrix? The first thing she did was step on one of the spider things.

SIDORAK THE SIMP KING
You can NEVER have too much Roodaka...
Until you become Sidorak
I remember loving this movie as a kid, but man, I never realized how unsettling the scene where Roodaka first meets Vakama.
It's 'cause you don't like all the big simp energy - Vakama for Roodaka, and Roodaka for Makuta.
and by unsettling, you mean, "fetish awakening"
And Rodaka isn't even dead, she still lives after that even returning the rahaga to their toa form.
It really is a shame that the Ignition Trilogy never got to be made into films, but honestly there was so much to cover in that story that multiple films would need to be made to cover it all. Actually another youtuber actually converted 2 entire sets of books, Ignika and Mahri, into like 3hr plus long stop motion movies. They are extremely faithful to the books and it honestly breaks my heart that G1 Bionicle wasn't made these days cause a TV show with a decent budget made accurate to the books would have been amazing to see.
would you happen to have the sauce for this 3 hr stop motion movie? your comment made me wish for another Miramax trilogy covering the Toa Mahri, Inika, and Phantoka :

Trivia bit: Roodaka was voiced by Kathleen Barr, the same voice actress who played Gali in _Mask of Light._
On the subject of more BIONICLE content, yes please! I'd love to see a review of Legend Reborn, the Flash Games... the 2015 disaster--I mean, reboot...
2015 wasn't really bad but it just didnt feel like G1, it's the unfortunate reality for companies because it came out at a special time and cant be replicated.
I don't remember anything about the last two movies, but I sure do love the little ad break animation.
Fire Guy leads a team of TOA HEROES to defeat Makuta.
The Ignition Saga is my favorite arc for Bionicle, so I'm really bummed that they never made a movie for it...
I agree; the Visorak are pretty great. Way better than stuff like the Borhok and Vahki in terms of grunt villains. I was honestly sympathizing with them for the whole movie after how horribly they were treated and how scared they always were of the leaders, and it was really satisfying at the end when they got to just walk away and abandon Roodaka. I feel the Visorak in particular are an underrated part of the movie. I mean, they managed to make you root for creatures with woodchipper faces. That has to be worth something.
The janitor Visorak also deserves a medal.
*Roodaka appears* "Oh boy... Here we go..."
That got a disproportionately loud laugh from me
"Hey Turaga! How were your siblings like back in the day?"
Vakama: "..............18:36-18:38"

Roodaka flattered Sidorak so Keetongu could flatten him.
I wish they made movies for the next 3 years. That's the best story arc

So, to be perfectly honest, I don't know shit about Bionicle. But this series of videos have been so interesting, and the general passion that you put into that is really really obvious. I couldn't not watch. Thank you so much for sharing, especially for those of us on the outside!
I never cared about Bionicle before. Never watched the movies as a kid. How did you manage to make me so interested in them? What a great video. Well worth the wait.
how dare you
because Bionicle is actually really good
Watch the Commercials, you'll understand why but not as much if you didn't grow up with it.
I’d love to see your thoughts on the whole Bionicle storyline. I know it like the back of my hand, but I’m interested in your perspective and your personal experience with each storyline (and yes, Igniton/Mahri deserved movies of their own for the storytelling there)
There was a fan stop motion series made by a youtuber, the vids are bloody long but its as close as you are gonna get to movies from the ignition trilogy.
I think Keetongu is heavily inspired by a Jinushigami, a Japanese nature spirit. Most art I've seen of them depict an almost identical shape, being tall, majestic, wearing a wide disk shaped hat, and being made of stone and moss, they're even said to speak in a similar fashion to Keetongu but in Japanese.
*INTENSELY MAKING TEA*
Fun Fact: a group of UA-camrs made 2 stop motion fan made movies about the Bionicle Ignition saga continuing where the Mask of Light left off. And there were also 2 show fan made animated clips about the 2 Ignition series, one staring Jala and the other staring Motor.

Its funny you say the Visorak are cute. At school I made a plush Roporak called Ropey
"The Key to Nongu" never gets old HAHA
The final battle in the books is way more intense. It wasn't just the toa, rahaga, and Keetongu against an army of spiders. The toa ended up recruiting a bunch of other allies, including a fucking dinosaur that wrestles a giant visorak into another dimension.
RIP Dinosaur. You were the real hero
More than years ago, I remember hearing an advertisement for this movie. All I could remember was "They changed us into[evil species]", and that the ads made it seem far darker than the other movies.
I got excited with a wide grin/smile, when I realised that movie was the one you're reviewing. It was totally worth neglecting sleep for! :D
Also, Sexy Robot Spider Women is common to both this movie, and that Transformers Prime TV series. Even as an Asexual teen, it was impossible to ignore the "creepy seductress" aura they constantly gave off.
Was distracting from the cool robot fighting. :3
That epic tea making footage.
I remember really loving Bionicles when I was younger, it's a shame that they didn't continue the lore that the first 3 movies set out was a missed opportunity. In all honesty I didn't even know they were still making Bionicle sets
I mean, they kept making books. Which are legitimately good and better than the movies, in my opinion.
There is actually a ton more lore in the books, comic books, web serials, and web games (particularly the "Mata Nui Online Game"). If you want the full Bionicle experience, you'll have to travel into multiple media. Fortunately most of the material can be found on biomedia project

@@frankficcle7081 yah I know about those but those are niece, I'm talking about like what they did with the movies and make it more mainstream. Back then you couldn't flip it to a channel without a Bionicle commercial but now I rarely see them
@@HandmadeGoose97 it's a shame how lego has treated bionicle, especially considering bionicle saved lego from bankruptcy. I would love a bionicle tv show baised off the original storyline, not like that half-assed reboot they did in 2015. 9:43 That is some of that 2000s edgyness power... I love it. XD
Thank you for this! It was definitely worth the wait :D
Glad you liked the movie as much as I do, it feels tragically underappreciated by most of the fandom. Though the books go into greater depth on Vakama's mindset leading up to and during the Hordika transformation, and there are extra elements of the conflict that had to be glossed over for time, overall I really enjoyed the dark atmosphere and storytelling it had to offer. And yeah, that Matau was the one to bring Vakama back around was a really strong decision, both to balance out his typical role as comic relief like you said, and since he's been probably the most antagonistic to Vakama throughout the entire arc, the apology means a lot coming from him. I do wish the search for Keetongu had been given a bit more screentime, to see the team at work with the conspicuous absence of one Toa and five Rahaga, and give Matau a bit more opportunity to grow leading up to that apology, but still. On the whole, really good stuff, and I especially enjoyed that analysis of it as Film Noir at the end.
As for future Bionicle content, I'm certainly looking forward to The Legend Reborn, and if you're up for it I'd also love to see your take on the Mata Nui Online Game and it's sequel, along with the Bohrok Flash Animations the team produced in between. And those year-by-year retrospectives you mentioned sound fantastic! In your own good time though, of course; there's no rush ^^
I think both this and the movie before it were strangely more coherent then the books. The Legends of Metru Nui especially.
Here's why:
In the books, the Toa Metru protect six Matoran from Dark Hunters, gather legendary weapons, and defeat the deadly Plant Monster terrorizing the city. They also follow the reports of yet another matoran of strange occurrences under the city, and defeat a sentient Rahi. By this point, their exploits should be legendary. Six Matoran at least should be telling stories of these new Toa doing heroic things(Ahkmou not counted becuase he is scum). Dume dismissing them should have been met with blow-back. They might have failed his little arena, but they are the ones who slew the Morzubakh and ended the threat lurking in the Archives.
And even if the Matoran somehow didn't know this, Vakama's fellows wouldn't be mad at him for sending them on a trip to find the Great Disks, because they slew the Plant Monster with those disks. His vision was vital. It might not have gotten them Dume's approval, but it saved their city. Instead of handing the disks back to him with disdain and all that, in a coherent story, they would have stood by him and said that these disks are what they used to slay the Morzubakh, they are weapons of power, trophies of victory. By making the plant monster a throw away scene, no more important then the giant fish Nokama fights, and by cutting out Krahka the movie made the Toa Metru's anger and disdain, as well as the Matoran's own disrespect actually believable.
In the next series, Vakama's mistake leads to the Toa being transformed. And yet in between this and his betrayal, they have a whole adventure when they defeat a giant spider monster together. That should have strengthened their bonds. The Toa Hordika after all that should have had a victory to to look back on and bolster their self confidence and team spirit.
Now, I prefer the books because they have cooler stories and characters like Karzhani and Krahka, but it really does feel like two different stories were told in each series. One where the Toa Metru have successful adventures and are respectable heroes in their own rights, and one where the Toa struggle to rise and become legitimate heroes.
What a lovely and well rounded video, certainly have fond memories of the 2005 era of Bionicle (even if the Hordika masks scared me at first) but the dark and creepy atmosphere of the 3rd movie was great fun. Having it be Film Noir is an interesting observation and one I wholeheartedly welcome. A Film Noir and Werewolf story, hmm, I wonder what game that is like?
Would certainly love more Bionicle content if that is in the cards, videos on the games would be fantastic along with a retrospective of each year of the series. Thanks again for this little jolt of nostalgia
My childhood WAS this movie. God bless you for reminding me I have the dvd and how good it is- time to watch~!
I think I said this on a previous video, but I see no problem in repeating:
As someone who was arguably "too old" for Bionicle at the time and thus never grew up/was invested with the series - my interests were definitelty elsewhere during my teen years - dang, these movies look interesting. From an outsider's perspective, they seem like one of those things that are "dumb on paper, but well-executed to not matter"; heck, I almost feel like I missed out.
Honestly, I’m pretty sure Roodaka awakened something in prepubescent me.
Ah!! Scarfulhu the chronicler has returned!!
Also Roodaka's head has a cobra motif. Her head is shaped like a snake and her hair flap thing on the back of her head is like a cobra's hood

This was so stylish. Your delivery is really charming and you hit all the main points and add some great jokes as well!
funny thing, out of the two, Roodaka in the extended lore, she lived and she, to my knowledge, kind of swapped sides.
Ok not gonna lie I got the hots for Roodaka. All that aside, I am scared to see if you review The Legend Reborn.

So many years on and still people remember and love Bionicle. This pleases me 😊
Now I remember why I loved these movies. Especially part 3. My only wish was that they'd made a part 4 based on the Piraki and the other sets. This deserved another trilogy. At *least* one more.
You know, now that I think about it after so many years, Rahaga can actually be considered a word in my first language and can be translated to "the one who knows the path"

yknow, i think i didnt appreciate this movie enough when i first saw it. i think i was disappointed because, at the time, i had gotten into the comics and more in-depth lore of the series overall, and the movie didn't include but so much of that. there was an entire book full of fan-created rahi given lore at the time, and younger me somehow expected all of that to show up in a movie with a runtime of, what, an hour and a half? point is, thanks for taking a look at this, because it gave me a fresh perspective! looking forward to a review of the Bionicle game (the one literally just titled "Bionicle", following the Mask of Light saga).

Gotta say the whole mutation storyline would work infinitely better if the Toa didn't just look like... different Toa. Maybe it's more obvious if you're hard core into this franchise, but having seen clips out of context I just assumed they were a different group. They don't look 'beast-like' to me at all, at least not compared to their usual design.
