///Don't forget his great music ...Great Leon Russell ///
I guess everyone might have noticed that the best musicians, composers, performers are not necessarily the most widely known. I was lucky enough to have known of Leon Russell as a young teen and attending this monster concert. I also caught a stop on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. I suppose my point is there's such a difference between creativity and popularity. To hell with popularity, Leon Russell was a true artist.
Except, of course, he was one of the the biggest concert draws in the early 70's. So he was very popular back then!
Exactly! All of us loved him and many of us stayed a fan all these years.
Cheryl Beddow Leon at the Filmore in the Village was another historic epic show 😀😀😀
@@danjoda755 I saw him in concert many times throughout the 70's. First show, Mad Dogs&Englishmen. Leon and Joe, what mega talented stars they were. Their music lives on.
For sure, we lost rinky dink the carboard guitar playing tramp in Liverpool a few years ago. The streets are silent now x
Probably the best consert ever recorded good bless you Leon, Eric, George, Bob, Billie, Ringo and everyone else who helped with fantastic consert!
The best bluesman this side of the delta.
That Okie , had it all.
You have brought so much joy to so many , RIP Leon Russell , we love you !
Best musician. in world.
Agreed
Love
Amen to that. Nobody else played piano and sang like that, a storyteller of hippiedom, funkdom, pure soul
I know by the 2nd note its Leon NOBODY HITS THOSE KEYS LIKE LEON AND LISTEN TO THAT OKLAHOMA TWANG , THANK YOU FOR GIVING US Leon Russell
I have the Concert for Bangladesh, bought so long ago.. Limited ability to travel. Any suggestions re: value? Frequent visitor here, if you respond it will help me. Container pkg. has damage, vinyl is pristine. Help, please

First time I ever saw Leon was when the movie about the Bangladesh came out in 1971. I remember thinking 'Wow! Who IS that guy?' He'd just released the Carney album and I played it to death. Have loved his work ever since. Last saw him a couple years ago in a dinner theatre concert in Chicago. A little slowed down but he still had more soul in his little finger than most anyone else has in their whole body. Hope he's getting down with J.J. Cale in paradise about now.
I thought there were two concerts where Leon Russell upstaged the stars by just being Leon Russell. This Youngblood/Jumpin Jack Flash medley is one, the other was Leon's piano on "Bird on a Wire" on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen" concert. Listening to Bird on a Wire once, on a car trip (have to say "car" when talking of trips?), my wife asked, "who is that piano player? He's great!" She had studied classical piano for 6 or 7 years when she was young, so she knows a bit about the instrument.
One other thing - when Leon passed I read a number of stories by people who knew him, and every single one of them thought he was the nicest person they'd ever met in the music business. Rita Coolidge, who certainly saw the worst of macho men in the rock milieu, said that Leon was just not one of those jerks, but a genuinely nice person. Elton John credits Leon for pulling him out of a very dark place and pretty much saving his life.
That, to me, is a special person.
Read Leon's book - he's a real gentleman
@@oneitalia2312 Thanks. I've got a long list of books to get to, but I'll add this.
He upstaged Cocker on th Mad Dogs tour
Mad Dog tour wouldn't have happened without Leon.
i was at the afternoon show of this concert 51 years ago today...leon almost made you forget everyone else who was on that stage that day. not an easy thing to do considering who the other musicians were. RIP to the MOST...
I remember seeing this movie in 1972. This was one of the best songs of the concert in my opinion. It rocked ! Rest in peace Leon !
Leon clearly stole the show at this concert.
Mr Russell survived 50yrs+ in the music industry, that in it self is a testimony of that man's talent, dedication and the love of the music profession. He left a large"FOOT PRINT"R.I.P. my friend!!
Amen!
you probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I somehow lost my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me
@Ryan Ernesto instablaster ;)
@Tristan Houston Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Tristan Houston it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
Oh sweet Leon! Haven't heard this one in ages and it still feels just as funktastic and powerful as the first time I heard it over 40 years ago. Thank you, Leon, you precious man.
The best concert of our generation, just IMHO for me. When it reached the movie theater in East Tulsa, we all sat & enjoyed Ravi & everyone but when Leon came out it felt we were all there @ the Madison Sq. Gardens....with all the Tulsa guys up there it was a sensory overload & we rocked thise theater seats like crazy.
It's disheartening to know that SO many of these musicians are up in the Heavenly Band....the DVD of this has been playing MANY times.....it's my favorite. Thx for posting it & GLAD it's not been taken down!
Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leon was a staple of my teen years. Probably played with more bands than anyone. An unsung talent both as singer and writer the best on piano!
❤
Nobody that loved Leon should ever forget him.
Trust me we don’t. I was just trying to find a Leon concert on here like you can on Tom Petty. But the group LeonLifers keeps his memory alive everyday.
Nobody should ever forget this man ....hell Elton fashioned his piano playing after Leon Russell
Best piano man ever, thanks Leon, you will be missed
one of the greatest performers ever to grace the stage.
Leon Russells bangladesh performance is legendary.
Thanks For the killer music...RIP...
Leo was a great musician, one of the greatest...RIP. Leon.
Rest In Peace Leon Russell.
Anyone who doesn't appreciate the genius of Leon Russel does not understand music in any meaningful way!
Amen brother.
Leon stole the show. Young people don't realize how unlucky they were not to see Leon in his prime. By the time he played with Elton John the years of smoking had injured his voice.
But his work with Elton is also really good.
@@joaquinlezcano2372 It's okay but years of smoking or old age had ruined Leon's voice.
AND DON'T KNOW ALOT OF THE BEST MUSIC WAS WRITTEN BY HIM. RIH ANGEL.
Think of all the music he made while working with The Wrecking Crew?! So many songs he played on, he was the Master of Space and Time. So glad I happened upon him in Tulsa when I was 19. I was mesmerized! Leon has “it” in spades!!
Love and rest in peace, Thank you for all the musical magic!
Absolutely a unique talent. Incredible voice and phrasings...a true showman. You will be missed bro'.
God, I really miss knowing that somewhere on the same planet as me Leon Russell was alive and still performing, less than before but still good stuff. But BB King passed not too long ago and Leon had cardiac bypass surgery and it sounded like he was having problems getting his strength back and touring; performing, travelling is tiring. But all in all I believe that when Leon passed away he was happy, contented and had achieved the recognition that he should have gotten years ago. But he was finally recognized for being one of era's most talented, most prolific singer, song writer, pianists and I was so glad for him. I love watching the videos in which he isn't wearing sun glasses, because I love to be able to look at and into his eyes; because when you look into Leon's eyes what you saw was what you got. In other words he never tried to hide behind some LA manufactured rock star look.. And I really envy them their talent. How I have always wished I could play blues guitar & I would trade all the expertise I have in my field to have talent like a Leon Russell, BB King, or Eric Clapton. Oh well, it's fun to dream about!!
Thanks Leon for giving a great hand to the people of Bangladesh in 1971.I will always remember you.Mexico City.
No other can ever take the place of this great man. Rest In Peace God bless your heart Leon.
No words can explain the pleasure he has given all of us. Will miss him for the rest of my life. Thks leon .
Along with Billy Preston's contribution, Leon's stint - along with his help on "Beware Of Darkness" - was one of the top of the highlights.....so sad that he was left off the guest list on The Concert For George...one of the great "Wrecking Crew" too....
you're the one...RIP
Was lucky enough to see Leon a few times. Amazing life and musician. RIP Leon
My first gig, 13 years old, on drums and lead singing with my band The Mornings After performed this medley at The Santa Rosa Fairgrounds. I was too young to realize what I was singing about, sex Ed would be a couple years later lol! Anyways we blew them away. Thanks Leon and George. I love this.
The Concert for Bangladesh...........
The Benefit Concert of BENEFIT
CONCERTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was at this concert. I heard him sing it live. George got at least a 2 minute standing ovation just stepping out on stage. Billy Preston went wild and started dancing. This was the first concert in the USA by a former Beatle. The great Carle Radle, everyone's bass player was on stage. He died way too young. It was an unforgettable concert. Perhaps the most epic concert I have seen and I have seen most of them. But I was not at Woodstock. Which I understand was not as great when actually there because of the weather.
Lucky you !
This is about 10 minutes of the best rock n roll in history. Lucky you to be there.
It was also the first concert for charity - George invented the idea with this concert, God bless him. Not surprised it would be him who'd do it.
not true...the beatles did a charity benefit for united cerebral palsy on sept 20 1964 at the paramount theater in nyc. of course, that might have helped give george the idea for the concert for bangladesh. (which i also attended).
@@oshesa1 I never knew that! I saw an interview with Ravi Shankar. He simply asked George and George said OK. George desperately needed to come out from the shadow John and Paul. This was a good way.
His all things must pass triple album was a way of saying hey, look at all the stuff I cannot get released. Now here it is.
I was at that concert. I still play the concert on cd and dvd. It's my go to concert of all time.!!
Me too ..... still adore Leon Russell 💖💖💖
What??? Were you really at that notorious concert?? Wow!
Wow ! That’s a real claim to fame!
Receive our gratitude and respect. The great musicians and and the attendees with their meaningful presence made my country (Bangladesh) know to the world in those distressed days of 1971. Salute to them.
It is in top 3 greatest concerts in history.
Awesome rhythm section and unchained Leon . The real deal. RIP
Too much 💙
Luvya much, Leon. Hope you're "Back To The Island". RIP, Brother.
I love this song of course and I love Leon Russell
I have this (3) record Albumm. Oh God, how I love Leon, the Master, TYJ for allowing me to be on this earth at the same time. RIP, Leon, you continue to shine. JMC
The very good looking and so bloody cool Leon was at his peak at this time, as was Billy Preston, as was Wee Georgie Harrison....what a marvelous film comprising two concerts on Yorkshire Day 1971 .....
Get me some Leon Russell daily fix 💜. Miss u
Leon
Yeah, me too.... miss you Leon so much
Rest in peace, Leon....thanks for all the great music and memories!
I was lucky to be 8 rows from the stage in Anaheim when Albert King opened for Elton John who opened for Leon. His music will always be here to remind us. RIP old fella.
Lucky you!
That voice, those hands , those eyes! Leon the master of space and time. Thank you, Leon.
Thank you Leon, Master of Time and Space! Leon Lifer!
first heard him in the Concert for Bangladesh; then realized all the songs he wrote for so many others!!! Then decades later, almost broke, Elton John got him out of 'retirement' ....just in time!!!!!!! Thank God!! His lyrics are outrageous!!!!!!!!!
Blows my mind that my son lives in Leon Russell house Paradise Records with his Aunt for Collage in Galitaiin Tennessee. Guest house and recording studio still there. Garage to fit his tour bus is also there. Been there one nice place.
That's is amazing! Very sad he's not there. But wow the music that was made there. Historic! Still mourning his loss.
NO music today can compare!!
R.I.P. Angel
I was in love with Leon... still... RIP baby
As far as im concerned leon , don preston , carl radle ... THAT was THE highlight of the show
Followed closely by billy prestons performance
Its the way it all comes together the voices the instruments the soul the vibe Background singers ,when to and when not too, incredible
I just love the Leon hooded eyes.😂❤
I thought the eyes were from the weed 🫠😎
You are so Loved and Missed. Thank you for all your talent and Music you gave us. xo xo xo
Thanks for the music!R.I.P., Leon!
thank you for the many gifts you leave us. R.I.P. Leon
Miss him lots. You should post the whole song. It was an incredible combination and up to the sky performance by the Holly man, Leon.
We had a 8 track player in a 1965 Chevy Nova - 1972 - always kept playing it over and over...Leon Russel was the BEST part of it! God the memories!
👍
A lightning bolt. Willie and Ray both said he was the best songwriter they ever knew. And of course he was from Oklahoma which made it even better. He conquered the world. We will never see his like again.
i loved leon but not so sure about oklahoma it kinda sucks

What and awesome job by brother leon Russell they don't get any better RIP u did a great job on this one the master
amen.
Little did I know then, that this was the greatest concert I have ever been to.
As a Tulsan it's a rule almost to love Leon, lol. but seriously he was one of the nicest people I ever met in person. These pics bring back so many good memories of the Bangladesh concert, with George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Jesse Ed Davis along with Carl Radle on bass, playing guitars along with him made this one of his best shows in my opinion! Seeing Jesse Ed standing at the end of Leon's piano playing is really special to me, hell of a guitar player from oklahoma as well 1
looks like he was real nice to cute girls. lol
Yes, I stumbled upon Leon in TTown at age 19. I was completely mesmerized, can still picture the Master of Space and Time in ‘78. Cosmic ☮️.
Remember Leon Russell is Elton John's idol. What a musician Leon was. RIP, Leon. Thanks for all your many, many songs and wonderful music. Karen Lynch
I saw them BOTH on mere Griffin in the early 1970's. Leon took the day.
God, I miss him
You are not alone...
Me too! 💙
Had the honor to meet him as we were an opening act at a half dozen of his local shows.Never met a kinder friendly unprententious ,person in my entire life, Hope to see ya soon enough bra. Can come
Thank you Leon for all your contributions. RIP
R.I.P.
There was magic at that concert and this was the best version Russell did of Youngblood.
That was a kick in the proverbial butt to lose Leon Russell. Such a shame that he passed, but he's in good company on the other side, I believe. When it's my time, I hope I can float by Leon Russell and say hello to him and let him know how much I enjoyed his music while we we were earthbound. Course, once we pass, we don't speak and/communicate the way that we do on this flying mudball in the sky. We're on another plane/dimension.
@3:23 when Leon mentions the “19” year old girl I’m taken back to a memory of seeing him by happenstance, when I was age “19” too in Tulsa. Saw a long gray hair/beard, gorgeous blue eyed soulful man playing and singing alone at an upright piano. Was in a tiny club behind the the fancy “Fountains” restaurant. Felt like “time” stood still for a moment & there was an aura of light surrounding-emitting from him.
So Ethereal and OTHERWORLDLY is all I can say about the experience, I found out soon after who Leon Russel was, our Master of Space and Time, can still picture him, tis wild.
Read the book.....he's truly an intelligent gentleman
@@oneitalia2312 thank you for the hint, didn’t know a book was written about our dear man, Leon.
I accidentally bumped into Jazz Fest in New Orleans years ago (I know, right?! Had NO idea it was happening!! Just heard music in the distance, and followed it) What a surprise it turned out to be 🥰 Feel so lucky to have seen him! Had no idea how deep he rolled... Magnificent ✌💙🤘
The Gospel according to Leon! Every song was spiritual for me. LOVE LOVE LOVE !!
so sad. RIP Leon. You made my life so happy
watching this because I'm from Bangladesh ✋
Beyond genius in this contribution to the. "Concert for Bangladesh! Live forever, my Leon!
This guy got it done for years and years right up thru the bitter end. Loved a long time , rock in peace , you were the "one"!
Leon was so good in this performance. He wasn't just giving his A performance or his A+ performance, He was giving his 10-year old goes to college savant performance!
ain't no beatin this....just crazy good spirit...thank the good lard above for Leon
Mad Dogs, Bangladesh, et al, Leon was great helping friends like George and Joe, but when he toured on his own, it beat every other concert for pure, balls-to-the-wall energy. Even the cops were dancing in the aisles.
I was there at concert. Leon was the best.
You were at the Bangladesh concert?
@@oneitalia2312yeah, I wondered the same thing.
He was a really great american musician, from the south 🤠
from Oklahoma! (could play in music clubs at a young age, b/c it was a dry state)
one in a life time
I think this was 53 years ago. Good God.
LEON Russell's PIANO PLAYING.........Like something out of a revival meeting....PURE HOLY ROLLER....
Thank goodness i got to see Leon live at the forum
Your words reminded me of his song “Queen of the Roller Derby” 😎

My first rock concert, Fox theater. #STL 1971
Still remember the first time I heard this - it smokes till this day!
So cool. Love you Leon.
Tell it tell it
The great Leon Russell! Master of it all.
He was an incredibly handsome man. His kids might be equally good looking.
I was at Newport 69. Jimi, Joe Cocker etc. Four days of nothing but rock Does anyone know if that was Leon backing Joe? I am quit sure it was. I do not remember Leon performing, of course there is quit a bit I do no remember, Woodstock on the west coast. R.I.P. Leon, now Joe and yourself can jam once more.....
The concert is great. Thats the way god planned it. Here comes the sun. Love minus zero. Wile my guitar gently weeps. Just like a woman.
Leon love you sooo long. This is an awesome song😊😊😊😊
Makes live-aid sound a bit naff.
Love the pics of Billy Preston, he looks so happy. Leon’s eyes are so beautiful and blue!💙 Sexy man!
