Just imagine how much more difficult the fight would have been if he had full HP bar in second phase
It would be beautiful
Being stuck on a boss this good isn't a downside, imo.
There is a multiplayer bug that; for some random reason; starts the fight directly at Phase 2 with full HP
@@ReLLiKMaster. Had that happen a couple times and by god was it a glorious fight each time

That slight quiver at the end as he realises what you're trying to do, and that he's failed in protecting Marika.
pretty sure he hates marika.
@@roguexivan2909 he is still loyal to her, even if he kinda figures out her betrayal but choses not to believe it. His death line (with the Gurranq quest) shows he still cares for her.
@@mirayoquese8608 it’s a bit of both. Imo. The true nature of shadow bounds can be learned from Blaidd more so than Maliketh. They’re basically born to be loyal to a fault to their Empyreans but secretly, their true purpose is to be sleeper agents for the Greater Will as a tool to control their Empyreans. There’s a lot of evidence that Marika pushed Maliketh to that point and we see it happen firsthand in Ranni’s questline.
"Father Doggo, you may have not been paying attention, but based on my past actions, you could deduce that the answer to your question is pretty much 'Everything'."
Me, not being able to solo this guy for the life of me, upon hearing “to kill what?” I immediately yell “To kill you, motherfucker” yeah I have a love/hate relationship with this boss
Maliketh is literally the embodiment of a character whose mere presence alone can paralyse people with fear.
Yes, anyone at the time can crap from his damage and speed.
I think a intelligent, talking wolf that's 12 ft tall on all fours and 36 ft long that wields a 10 ft sword made of Death itself that can fire beams of light that drain your life away would paralyze anything with fear. 💀
Plus he roar louder than a firework, dash at 60 mph, jump over 50 feet in the air while firing those deadly beams of light and stab his Black Blade into the ground which can cause the ground your standing on to drain your life.
@@frostyfire3102caling/lore wise, he's much faster and not even the Mightiest of the Demigods, General Radahn, would dare to face him. This Death Wolf really splits apart the Gods (including Godfrey) and the Demigods in terms of their mentality and just might overall.
@@hokageobama4003 Just goes to show that "God" is merely a title in Elden Ring.
@@andyroobrick-a-brack9355 Oh, no. It's not necessarily just a title. The Gods don't seem to really mind him at all. It's likely because he pretty much serves them diligently but the Demigods are the ones who would probably have to fight him if they wished to become the Elden Lord and after seeing what the rune of death had did to Godwyn, they likely fear the same would happen to them as well.

@@sofialucia6429 Ngl I prefer Maliketh instead of Malekith, sounds far more badass
His voice is badass too
“The black blade” at the end too makes it infinity more bad ass like brooooo
If Radahn is respected by all, then Maliketh is feared by all. For there is no being in the world that could defeat Death itself, none but the Black Blade of Marika. And in his victory, had become the new master and warden of Death.
Oh he didn't beat death, he fused it into his own flesh...
He is the rune of death embodied just like how Radika is the Elden Ring embodied.
And I have no freaking clue how he did it.
@@samf.s.7731 close but not quite. Death was the power wielded by the Gloam-eyed Queen, she was its master. When Marika formed the Golden Order, she wished to remove the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring to remove death from the land, and Maliketh was sent to defeat the master of Death and he succeeded. From that point on he would become its new master and warden
After the night of Black Knives, Maliketh sealed the Black Blade that contained the Rune into his flesh so it would never be stolen again (the Black Knife assassins stole the Rune's fragments by chipping the pieces off the Black Blade), and ever since he tried to consume all of the Death Roots in the lands in hope of restoring the Rune(?).

I think this 2nd phase music is monstrously underrated. It sounds like a terrifying danger that you want to avoid at all costs, but it's coming for you now, and it's growing fast.
The concept of death I guess
i also think there is an underlying pain and tragedy in the music which i find fascinating.
@@gabrielsawaya4815 For sure, it's overwhelming tragedy that turns to tension, that then turns to sheer terror and rage, like you're witnessing something incomprehensible. A true welcome to the big leagues.
I really like that piece
@@gabrielsawaya4815 Indeed. What's even more messed up is the fact that Maliketh went down thinking that, the reason the Lands Between fell into chaos, was because he failed to protect the Rune of Death, despite the fact it was really because of Marika. Maliketh was loyal until the very end, and this was how he was rewarded.
The one all Demigods feared. Black Beast of Destined Death. Marika's Black Blade. The ''Death Of The Demigods''. The best boss, with the best theme.
This gives me strong kronk vibes.
Best boss indeed
@Adryliak What's bad in his first phase?
@Adryliak was it too hard or too easy?
@Adryliak nah his moveset is just too easy to dodge but it's first phase so fair enough
“O death, Become my blade once more” never fails to give me chills.
I swear to God, we are getting closer to having actual anime battles in video games that move at real time. The way this boss dynamically leaps off of pillars and spins in the air to deliver ranged energy strikes before seamlessly returning for a final swipe… fucking perfection. It’s genuinely impressive, I can’t even begin to imagine how From managed to pull off the seamless mobility of bosses like Maliketh and Malenia.
Devil May Cry 5: “Am I just a joke to you?!”
Seriously. We’ve already achieved them my friend haha. If you’re stylish enough with your Elden Ring builds, take time to study the fight and then choreograph your abilities, weaving them into battle at precisely the right moment..
Yeah. I’ve fought Malenia that many times. The anime battles await you ;)
Oh yeah that one move ... My jaw dropped.
He was a tough fight, and I enjoyed it...
Because he's just so damn awesome.
I used the upgraded black blade against both the Elden Beast and Plasidussax.
I mean, it makes sense from a lore PoV so they put a freaking ton of thought into this stuff.
You should try Sekiro! It's even faster paced than Elden Ring.
Isshin and Vergil are right here bud
there's an entire genre about just that already. DMC; bayonetta, MGR, ninja gaiden, sekiro...
“…there was not one demi-god who would not have feared him, the black-blade, maliketh…”
Ranni and Rykard actually prepared themselves to engage him if things went south on the night of the plot, and even then they still were unsure of a chance of victory.
Tbh tho when you have malekith fight Rykard, he is absolutely destroyed by malekith. Would not have gone well for him if he had to fight him
@@Tau_Aquila In Lore, Maliketh is probably the only being capable of truly killing the immortal serpent
@@kapitanbeuteltier5889 hes the only being capable of killing any of the demigods outright, I mean both body and soul though because death became unnatural after she separated the rune of death from the ring

…well, the thing is that if he was feared even despite being already weakened through sealing death within him, imagine how terrifying of an idea was that Maliketh on his prime was sent to hunt any of them, after all we are talking about the guy who was sent to kill the goddess of the black flame, whom he did not only killed but whipped about 90% of the god-skin apostles.

That lone female vocal throughout the song that takes precedence in the vamp portion, and then lurks in the background for most of the rest of the track, is almost certainly a representation of Marika's importance to Maliketh. He not only carries around this tremendous burden in Destined Death, but this crushing guilt towards his queen, that somehow he had been negligent enough to let the tool of her firstborn's demise be stolen out from under him, and as we all know, this inadvertantly triggered the shattering. He thinks he deserves eternal hunger; the deprivation and listlessness that we see Gurranq endure the whole game is self-inflicted, for the good of (his half-sister?) Marika, who basically abandoned him regardless. He's a lot like (his nephew?) Morgott in a few ways.
So fuckin sad dude!!!
Love the interpretation on the female voice
It’s so very tragic, he even seems to feel betrayed and saddened if the tarnished gives him all the deathroot before fighting him. “Tarnished, why wouldst thou…why?”
It's even worse when you think that at first, Maliketh may have not even understand what happened or that Marika pinned part of the blame onto him for it. He's like a pet who's broken a vase without intending to do so, and suddenly his mistress(or half-sister in this case) has directed much of her ire and hatred towards him for it, before ultimately abandoning him.
Everything in Elden Ring is made to be depressing and grim. That’s what drew me, a warhammer 40k fan, to Elden Ring. Just the sheer tragedy, brutality, hopelessness, depressive mess of the world. Only for such a force as a Tarnished chosen by grace to come back and reawaken again and again until their goal is complete. I love Leyndell for how it subconsciously feels calming and powerful, yet all the corpses and tired people show the complete opposite. It shows consequence for your decisions and how you choose to reach Marika. Truly masterful work
Whelp time to butcher more albinaurics for runes
Bro literally thinks the shattering, almost everyone in the lands between dying, most of the Demi-gods going insane and every other bad thing that happened after Godwyn’s death at the hand of the Black Knives, seemingly triggering Marika, his half-sister, to shatter the Elden Ring, was his fault for not sealing destined death properly and then allowing the Black Knives to steal it, that’s why he spends every night before you fight him howling towards Farum Azula, given he is a wolf man, the howling is likely him crying
"Forgive me Marika, the Golden Order....can not be restored..."
I shed a few tears when I hears these words from him in this boss fight
When did he say that?
@@leif4698
If you know Gurranq the Beast Clergyman, then you must know his quest line on giving him all the Deathroots, if you complete his quest line, he will reward you with a ancient dragon smithing stone and then roar/vanish into dust, then when you fight him as the Beast Clergyman at Farum Azula, he will recognize you and have new intro sentence he says and once you kill him when he's Maliketh the Black Blade, he will say these words
Little did he know I was aiding the Goldmask
@@kvltofsobek90 same
@@leif4698 Maliketh when his questline is not complete:
Intro: thou, who approaches destined death, I will not have it stolen from me again!
Death: witless tarnished...why covet destined death? To kill what?
When his questline is complete:
Intro: What? Tarnished? Why wouldst thou...Why?.. Tis' no matter, I hereby vow: that destined death shall not be stolen again!
Death: forgive me, Marika... The golden order...can not be restored...
Despite his terrifying appearance and role, Maliketh manages to be a surprisingly tragic figure.
He was utterly devoted to his beloved half-sister, Marika, and had served her faithfully every waking moment without question or hesitation, no matter how grim or dangerous the task, all because he wanted to protect her and her empire. And how was he rewarded for his loyalty? Marika betrayed him by shattering the Elden Ring and then disappeared, Ranni (his step-niece) stole a portion of his Rune of Death (and made plans to kill him with it if necessary), Godwyn (his nephew) was murdered using said stolen Rune, and the empire he'd fought so hard for collapsed into civil war when the remainder of his family started making grabs for his sister's now-vacant throne.
Blaming himself for everything that happened, he elected to seal the remaining portion of the Rune of Death inside his own body to keep it from being stolen again; this, likely coupled with his feelings of guilt, seems to have had an adverse effect on his mental state, inflicting him with an insatiable hunger for Deathroot which drove him to the verge of madness. It only gets worse if you complete his questline as Gurranq by finding and feeding him all nine Deathroots: despite consuming every last shred of the stuff in the land, it utterly fails to sate his hunger. At this revelation, he can only lament his condemnation to such a fate, humbly thank the Tarnished for their aid, and then leave to be alone with his torment.
If given all nine Deathroots prior to confronting him at Crumbling Farum Azula, his dialogue before and after the battle is altered: he recognizes the Tarnished as they approach him and weakly questions why they've come so far to seek him out, before the realization hits him that they've come to take the remains of Destined Death from him, and that he's been betrayed by someone he trusted again. And even despite all of this betrayal, his last words are to beg Marika's forgiveness for his failures.
Even worse, Marika may have had good reason not to let Maliketh in on her plans. As her Shadow, Maliketh was likely the Two Fingers' sleeper agent not unlike Blaidd, programmed to turn on Marika if she showed signs of defying the Greater Will.
Sad thing is Maliketh was probably pretty close to Godwyn too. They both had a connection to the dragons and we can even see a draconic tree sentinel guarding Maliketh.
''Even worse, Marika may have had good reason not to let Maliketh in on her plans. As her Shadow, Maliketh was likely the Two Fingers' sleeper agent not unlike Blaidd, programmed to turn on Marika if she showed signs of defying the Greater Will.'' Actually, the Greater Will does not control Maliketh. Both he and Marika predate the existence of the Two Fingers. THAT is the true tragedy. She did not trust him when she should have. She'd have saved them both immense suffering if she had. Maliketh is loyal to her, not the Greater Will. He's heavily conflicted in this. But he already knows Marika turned on the Greater Will and remains loyal to her. She should've trusted him. They would've undoubtedly beaten the Elden Beast together.
@@TheStraightestWhitest
Out of doubt and curiosity:
How do you know they predate the two fingers? Or where can i find the affirmation?
Would not still the whole role of shadow and half brother have to see with their origins as Numen then? Of course, mere speculation, that one.
maybe this whole thing linked with the Greater will, as shadows are suppose to be, made him prone to possible treason? As per Marika is Vessel of the Elden Ring, maybe she needs not of Two Fingers, As both the Elden Beast and The Fingers are vassals to the Greater Will?
In your speculation, how would them had fougth with the Elden beast if Marika was the vessel?
@Straight White Male Maliketh was made by the two fingers and he would have probably tried to kill her
@@alfalldoot6715 nope, Maliketh doesn't go nuts when Marika betrays the Order. If he was a normal Shadow, he would hunt her down long time ago, yet he didn't. And no, the thing piercing trough Marika's body is not a fragment of Destined Death.
It's a shame we can't tell Maliketh/Gurranq about Ranni being the mastermind behind the night of black knives. He really died thinking it was all his fault the Lands Between fell into ruin.
He knows though.
@@revolverocelot1380 That it was Ranni specifically? No. The Blasphemous Claw item makes it pretty clear that Ranni is terrified of him finding out, and has allied with Rykard and given him those shards of Destined Death to try and stop Maliketh in case he ever found out.
I would also be terrified if i stole my uncle's favourite revolver
Doesn't make any difference though. He still failed at keeping someone from stealing Death, which is something he already knows. The fact that it was Ranni would only clear up the fact who the thief was.

I'm writing a book and I just finished writing a scene that I feel encapsulates the feel of the boss.
In my book, it's the main character fighting two of his best friends.
They are being mind controlled by the real enemy, and he is trying to save them, the problem, however, is that all 3 of them have super powers.
The main character is the "Alpha" and has all the powers of everyone else, but can't control them well.
Vs his best friends who only have their one power and have been training to use their powers since the begining.
On top of that, the MC is holding back to not hurt his friends, something that is being exploited.
The villain enjoys the sadistic side to making these friends fight to the death, and it's very clear the MC is outmatched, their synergy is just too good but he refuses to give up on his friends. Tears roll from all three as they essentially take turns beating him to a bloody pulp. He is knocked down again and again and again and again. But he rises again and again and again.
The feeling isn't about the fight itself, perse, it's about what is at stake for failing. No matter the cost, you MUST prevail. That is what I feel.
I just wanted to share that. I love the boss music in this game it's so good to write to.
Maliketh should have been given more of a second phase since he is Destined Death's wielder. Every demi-god feared him. And should have felt it
We wouldnt have been able to beat him at his prime. Just straight up. Even malenia was scared shitless of this guy. Do remember that he soloed the entire godskin cult AND their queen in the lore. And this was BEFORE. he had destined death if I recall
@@escahfaidhe755 Imagine having Godfrey, Radahn and Malenia scared of you before you even have Death...
Me. Could clap Malenia in two goes.
But died 47 times to Maliketh. The music definitely owns up to that.
My favorite ost in souls to this day, such an incredible theme (Laurence the first vicar is second and fortissax’s theme is 3rd)
i had chills when i heard the intro of this theme
Maliketh deserved a better fate.
I love this OST. Unfortunately, there was a bug that turned off Maliketh's theme at the beginning of the second phase in multiplayer
Imagine playing multiplayer on your first playthrough. You did not in fact beat the game.
@@lordsneek2660 In my first playthrough Maliketh died too fast because I was using a bleed weapon and his hp in the second phase was too low in earlier versions. And I didn't even had a reason to go multiplayer. But later I realised that I missed the whole point of this boss, so I went multiplayer to fight him again as a furled finger
@@lordsneek2660 Yeah they did beat the game. Whether it's at level 1 or 713, whether it's solo or coop. Doesn't matter one bit. They can play and beat the game how they see fit.
@@THEME-SICKLE the point is you did not beat the game by yourself and got help, therefore it is not a REAL Playthrough
@@Reshi5000 The point is, it is a real playthrough for them. What someone counts as a playthrough is up to them. Not anybody else
this sounds like a final battle, just like it should if you know malikeths lore, it's so sad
Beautifully done, the design, music, the ambient, everything..
Maliketh, OH Maliketh! Best boss in entire series. Second best soundtrack. Second to Gael's. Shame he has low HP, but that's because he is a mandatory boss.
But excellent boss indeed.
This chad always beats my ass, took me an hour to beat him without summons
"O, Death. Become my blade, once more."
Pretty much a requiem of fighting against fate and inevitability
Well said!!! ❤ bravo.
That fits so well!
Especially powerful when you realize that the Envoys’ trumpets are signaling the coming of change in the Lands Beyond.
They know… The Tarnished becoming Elden Lord is fate, the Envoys’ prophecy.
And Maliketh is now facing it. Sad, to be honest.
I feel like a lot of people kind of misinterpret Maliketh's boss fight when they talk about his low health in phase 2 but I have a different opinion on this matter
While yes I also would have loved to fight him with a full hp bar I feel like you are not supposed to actually battle him one on one, no you've already done that in phase 1
The way the second phase begins and the way he attacks is clearly an indication that Maliketh knows it's now or never, he HAS to kill you there for good otherwise that would have been the official end of the age of the golden order
And that's why he's at half health: you've beaten him hard enough to realise this is it... Now you have to survive through it
The entire world doesn't expect you to make it
Maliketh PRAYS you won't
Well said!!!!!
So it's a last stand. I guess that explains why the trade off is that he will immediately go for the kill and doesn't give you a chance to hit him. Impressive he still kicks ass regardless.
I find it quite funny that as soon as you watch a speedrunner or someone really good at the game fighting this boss its eternally solved in your head, but damn is it tough to do blind. Cool ass boss.
I really commend from soft for distinguishing stuff like death blight from destined death.
When he hits you and you see that a chunk of your healthbar isn't just empty, but it's missing, as though your tarnished warrior is ceasing to exist ... You realize that *this* is true death in The Lands Between.
Yes!!!!!
You know, I'm realizing that you could put this guy in Bloodborne, and he'd fit right in as a boss.
Holy shit can you imagine the only hunter in the hunt history to have conquered his bestial form completely?
That would be so damn cool
I wonder why you would have to fight him tho
Maybe even he in the end went insane?
Or maybe he fights you because you want to end the hunt, maybe because like (to some extent) Gascoigne he knows that without other beasts to kill he would simply lose his purpose and become one just like all of them?
Goddamn Maliketh would fit so well as an underground legend you can actually fight in Bloodborne
RIP the playthrough, because lore wise the Hunter is fucked...
I swear this man was flipping in THE AIR this guy radiates black Air Force energy
If pure terror and intensity were a song....
This artwork is flawless. Great job!
This song always sounds like a duel of knights.
Because it is.
"I will deliver you your destined death"-Maliketh,the Black Blade
1:00
The only boss to put fear in my heart i was legit scared fighting him 💀❤️
This is such a great song I need more music like this in shadow of the erdtree
Idk if anyone here has read Berserk but this is what I imagine Guts looking like if he ever became an apostle
ah Maliketh, the only boss who can kill Mimic Tear
Yes 😂 in ng+6 he killed my mimic tear in 4 attacks
Game deserves its own movie
It honestly does. ❤ They’d just need to pick which ending it would be, but that wouldn’t be tough.
@@badasstoad9419 I think they would set movie like this:
They introduce 5 different heroes( they would represent human nature)
Then They will show one of them each season( A Ronin, Knight which wears all golden Armor, a Monk, a Denarged Maniac who uses Twinblade and a Varangian Guard who is good at tracking)
It would last 5 seasons
Last season is their road will cross in Farum Azula to stop Maliketh
Twinblade one would betray 4 of them when they defeated Godfrey and they would kill him
After that they would take crown
Would probably cry if I heard this score played live.
My favorite boss in all of FromSoft's games. If the Black Blade phase had a full health bar it would legit be perfect.
Parrying this boss was a mistake. I missed a great fight.........
Parry just makes him very simple
