I had the great pleasure to sing in this performance as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Please change your picture; this is NOT the Orchestra and Chorus of 1967; it is the poor imitation, under Welser-Most. The sound track, is, indeed, our performance of 1967, which we did twice in Severance Hall and then in Carnegie Hall, to which we journeyed every February.

This problem with the photo has been pointed out before. But I couldn't and still can't find a picture of the 1967 Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus. If someone can send me such a picture I will use it to upload a new video with the same soundtrack.

The Gloria is indeed glorious. Robert Shaw's choruses are magnificent. RIP, maestro, and thank you for writing so many letters!

ESSA MISSA ESTÁ DISFARSADA COM A CAPA DA ENGANAÇÃO DE QUE SE TRATA DE MÚSICA SACRA, MAS QUE NA VERDADE NUNCA FOI. SÓ OS IGNORANTES NÃO PERCEBEM QUE SE TRATA DE MÚSICA SEM OS TÃO PROPALADOS VALORES SACROS, QUE EXISTEM NAS OBRAS DESSE GÊNERO E QUE SÃO SÓMENTE ENCONTRADOS NAS OBRAS DE PALESTRINA, VIVALDI, J.S. BACH, MOZART, HAYDN, E EM MENDELSSOHN NO PERÍODO DO ROMANTISMO.

Thanks for posting this. I just listened to David Hurwitz's UA-cam review of major recordings of the Missa Solemnis. He cites this as probably the finest performance of all, but it is out of print. He strongly urges the Cleveland Orchestra to re-release it, but we'll see. Here's the Hurwitz review, which just came out yesterday: ua-cam.com/video/1EeJ3OI7rhs/v-deo.html

well, after saying i liked the beethoven 9, someone recommended i listen to the missa solemnis. so i got dave hurwitz's top pick and came here and must say, yes, impressive. i've always proclaimed beethoven to be my favorite composer, but sheepishly must admit i had not actually listened to this before. i was pleasantly surprised. thanks for posting it and thanks for the tip to listen to it.

Much superior to the last movement of the 9th symphony which to be honest is a bit of a shambles.

@@moby628 Some people (e.g., me and I guess TheVaughan5) consider the last movement of the 9th to be “a bit of a shambles” pretty much from beginning to end. Although with several very lovely moments or sections - it’s all a bunch of “sections”. (I think a lot of the frenetic parts of the Gloria of this MS gives the finale of the 9th a run for its money, though)

Too personal a setting of the mass to achieve great popularity, as Beethoven must have realized. As in many of his late works, there is a sense that the musical form is no longer adequate to contain his ideas. Parts of this work succeed, while in others his goal remains elusive.

I’m surprised Szell didn’t demand German Latin.

    セルのような偉大な芸術家による表現とは、常に憂愁に満ちたもので、部分ごとのスタイルの多様さを越えて、真実の表現からは意図せずにそれが滲み出るものなのだろう
