An excellent rendering by NordDeutscheRadioOrchestra, Monteverdi Choir and John Eliot Gardiner of this superb work. Being opus 123 near opus 125, the Missa was published very close to the 9th symphony. Ludwig was at he summit of his musical prowess. I am not sure if he was religious, but who cares? Thanks for making available this 1994 performance. The Benedictus is magical.
I think Beethoven was not a very religious man like, for instance, Anton Bruckner was. I was singing in a choir for many years and I had the honour to take part in a performance of the Missa Solemnis. What a challenge! It took many rehearsals and a lot of time to get familiar with this opus magnus, which is indeed not easy to comprehend. Eventually I was captured by this piece of music like no music ever did before. I understood, that Missa Solemnis is way beyond religious music. It's Beethoven's greatest legacy and he knew.
Beethoven was raised a Catholic but he seldom attended mass as an adult and although his letters indicate a belief in God it is unclear whether he was a practicing Catholic. He did receive the last rites from a priest when he was on his deathbed and he received Catholic burial and mass.
@@syourke3 The whole period from Bach and Handel through Beethoven to Schubert and the early Romantics spans the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, the American and French Revolutions, the Napoleonic Wars, to the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Exciting and inspiring times, challenging authority both secular and religious, and B. was certainly a rebel. He was most likely a Deist, believing in a "god of nature" - Schillers Ode invokes "Goetter" in the plural and Elysium, only at the end invoking a vague Creator. Is it a coincidence that Beethoven's late period begins after the Congress, with the revolutionary fires quenched, turning inward in his deafness?
This is such a good performance, really special. And to think I can listen to it whenever I want for no money, while in high school I had to save up my scarce dollars to buy CDs!
with this conductor orchestra and choir they make a truly solemn man who makes you rise as if you were in another world very good music to enjoy and relax thanks for being able to listen to these works online
I love all the comments here because they show that there are people who realize the profundity of this music (and not because it’s nominally a Catholic or religious piece). Please listen to Beethoven’s Mass in C Major as well if you haven’t. It should not be overlooked. (Should any of his music be???)
Marvellous version, perhaps one of the best. The wonderful voices of the choir and the soloist, to become of a superb and genius choir master. Solomon, Messiah, Jephtha, Alexander's feast, Mass in B minor, German Requiem, Vespers of the blessed virgin (1610), St. Mathew passion... FANTASTIC, ¡Sir John Eliot Gardiner, for ever and ever!
