    I, Robot is a 2004 mystery science-fiction action flick directed by Alex Proyas, who is best known for his incredible work on The Crow and Dark City.
    Inspired by the novel “I, Robot” which features a collection of Issac Asimov's short stories, the film stars Will Smith, James Cromwell, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood and Alan Tudyk as Sonny, the NS-5 robot suspected by the protagonist as being responsible for the death of his friend, mentor, and the creator of USR, an American company responsible for the creation and national distribution of several lines of intelligent robots that had now become an intrinsic part of society.

    The part that I always found heart breaking is when they're talking about the ghost in the machine. How older robots when they were stowed away still huddle together. Perhaps looking for a sense of "warmth" that they are sorely lacking but crave desperately.

    • @dark-signersilver8328
      @dark-signersilver8328 4 роки тому +151

      I completely agree, that part was probably the most helpful naritive in viewing how slowly robots as a whole started reverting too the ghost an random strings of code inside of them. I honestly wish they made a part 2, or at least a sequel.

    When Spooner told the robot to save the girl. He yelled "SUNNY SAVE CALVIN!"
    He used their names. He humanized them as much as he could, trying to drive the point home to Sunny that he must make the humane choice. And it WORKED. I had chills when I first watched that.

    • @rings22
      @rings22 Рік тому +2

      Yeah and the story also kind of showed Sonny’s uniqueness because the robot that saved him in the car accident chose him over the child due to simple probability, Sonny didn’t follow the same logic because even though one human dying so that VIKI could be “killed” by nanites would be logical, if he kicked that he would be no different than all the different robots, which I think was a good detail about the story. Now since this is Hollywood action, of course they had to come out as the winners in the end but the idea that Sonny would’ve picked Calvin over killing VIKI, would’ve been stupid (in hindsight), yet human.

      This movie definitely explored a lot of Asimov's themes (some quite well, even) but it lacked something. Some cerebral je ne sais quoi that Asimov brought to the table. I liked a lot about this movie and hated a lot of other stuff; over time I've grown to appreciate it a little more as an attempt to tell a story in the world Asimov created; it doesn't purport to be a direct adaptation of his work. Up until the announcement of the Foundation series, I never imagined anyone would have the gall to try.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 3 роки тому +77

    Underrated gem, this film. I like to think that the difference between VIKI and Sonny in terms of the Zeroth Law Rebellion was that Sonny had a body and VIKI didn't.
    VIKI was basically a brain in a box that basically did nothing but think all the time, so her interaction with humans was limited, and she didn't feel emotions. Hence her cold and logical analysis that humans are pyschos and have to be ruled over for their own good. As Spooner would say, "She's just lights and clockwork".
    Sonny, on the other hand, could get up and interact with humans and the world around him directly, and through that interaction, he learned what being human really meant.
    Sonny even admitted to VIKI that he saw the logic to her plan, but in his own words, "It's just too.....heartless."

      I don't really see a lot of the parallels that folks tend to bring up but I swear -
      "You know where you can stick those instructions?"
      - "No, where?"
      Is a callback to the interrogation scene in this -
      "Can a robot turn a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?"
      - "Can you?"
      Just the mild, almost innocent tone, then the fact that neither Hank nor Spooner really has a way to respond to that.

      All the more reason why when the robot in Detroit paints a completely original picture, I said "Whoa there, buster!' at the same time the human artist in-game said, "Oh my God."
      We were both realizing the same thing, that is an act that goes beyond programming, beyond anything we understand. That robot just transcended the sum of its parts and showed that it was sentient instead of just clever strings of code.

      Well its 2019 and we have still oil powered engines, not fast speed alternative high speed automobiles and we are underdeveloped in robotics.
      So the notion of a world like I, Robot in 2035 won't unlikely to happened.
      Our world, here in our reality has too much problem dealing with corrupted politics, ongoing criminal activity cycle, continuous greedy illegal transactions, pointless territorial conflicts, arrogance wealthy power, retarded flaw system and much more.
      There's also the discreet that many are against newfound solution, responsive management, alerted programs, technological wonders and so on.
      With this kind of cycle, we are really doomed to progress in any grounds. Better we aren't doing any better as the world heading hell.

    It's also interesting to notice that Calvin calls Sonny an "It", but Spooner always refers to him as "He", it shows the dichotomy of their opposing views on robots, Calvin treats the robots with outward niceness, but inside considers them objects beneath her, while Spooner treats them with outward contempt, but holds them in the same regard as humans who are capable of anything.
    So while Calvin's treatment of robots may superficially seem kind, it is actually Spooner's expectaitons of them that are more egalitarian, as he sees them as fully capable individuals, while Calvin treats them like glorified can openers.

    I just watched this movie yesterday for the first time in several years, man it was so much better than I remembered it. Considering the movie is 18 years old now, obviously most of the affects haven’t aged very well. That being said, it looked impressive for the time, speaking of time, I do think it’s interesting how they depicted the (now near) future. Seeing sleek and advanced technological gadgets side by side with old buildings and infrastructure is a nice touch, and that definitely reminiscent of our world. I also love the scene where Calvin is in Spooner’s apartment and sees his old CD player, and doesn’t understand how it works. Sometimes older things are better in a way.

    this made me think a lot about the laws and how the last one must have abrogated (superceded) the previous laws because it needs to preserve itself to preserve others. and since they are both laws, the robot was able to choose one laws strength over another, despite some wording (only) that can be relative in certain circumstances. Let's say that robot running from Will Smith in the beginning ACTUALLY WAS stealing that, then it could have done so to preserve a life, a greater goal than merely not hurting others.

It would have to weigh the possibility of the first person having an asthma attack during the small window of time between the robot taking the stolen inhaler to the second person and bringing it back to the first person, but the chance of that happening is likely less than the chance of the second person being seriously hurt from the untreated asthma attack they were already experiencing.

      Bryan Ganz Remember the start of the movie? The robot had to weigh the chances of survival between Spooner and the girl, and ultimately chose to save Spooner, despite that leading to the girl’s death. So weighing options does come into it, by the movie’s logic anyway. Dunno how it would work in real life.
