Riddik is the best character Diesel has played. Good movie
Riddick is the best character of them all! Diesel made him so!
Don't forget groot.
Hear Hear 🍻brother
The Iron Giant/Groot
One of the only good ones...Rock has more range tho imo
I like how Vin used the fast and furious franchise to leverage the studio to give him the rights to the Riddick franchise by only agreeing to the cameo in fast and the furious 3 if they gave him the rights to Riddick
This is my childhood right here.
Thank you so much for making me feel old. My childhood was movies like Blade Runner, Conan the Barbarian, Labrynth, Ladyhawke, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Aliens, and Star Trek ll : The Wrath of Khan.
Lol me too pretty fun though

Never understood why so many people talk about and focus on *Riddick* when Pitch Black is discussed. It's Fry's story. Fry drives the plot, Fry has the clearest arc, Fry surely has the most screentime. Riddick is barely present in the first half. He's cool, yeah, but Radha Mitchell owns her role as the guilt-ridden protagonist, and deserves much more praise for that.
Great point!
Yeah. Riddick is cool and all but he's not cooler than family!
All the actors and their characters were great IMHO.
Well, there were several things that ruined it for Fry in the last 45 minutes of the show...
1) She got upstaged by Riddick.
2) Then she got overshadowed by Riddick.
3) Then her character got killed forcng her to pass the baton to Ruddick.
4) With no plot armor and no golden parachute she got written out of the script.
5) in the end, it was Riddick who flew away in the ship instead of Fry.
@@hellbent7066 wha.....the only one of those that makes any sense is #5.
Fry's death happens with less than 5 minutes left in the movie. It's literally the last story event before the survivors get in the ship and fly off. Riddick is a capable pilot so he's behind the wheel. That's all.
Fry also has considerable agency later in the movie, especially when she confronts Riddick as he beckons her to leave the others behind, and she attacks him and berates him and convinces him to go with her.
Riddick didn't really care about them much, and seemingly didn't consider the risk worthwhile at that point, but Fry's change of heart and her determination fascinated and motivated Riddick. He clearly didn't expect her to have such resolve, and he admired that and followed HER as a result. Riddick's a hardass but not a momster or a villain, hell, he really doesn't do anything wrong in the whole movie, he's just very determined to survive and he's very capable of making logical decisions to ensure his survival, without putting other people first. Riddick is.....how Fry was at the beginning, when she tried to kill all the passengers to save the rest of the ship. It was a logical move, and a safer one for her and her copilot, but it was still cold, too cold for her copilot, so he sabotaged her lever and stopped her from releasing the other sections of the ship. Fry in that moment would have killed more people than Riddick surely ever had, and done so knowingly, and that was her choice. Her burden. She redeems herself at the end by refusing to leave the others behind, and martyrs herself as she saves Riddick, telling him "I said I'd die for them not you, come on!" And then subsequently dying anyway, devastating Riddick in that situation.
If you truly think Fry isn't important or relevant after the darkness hits you just need to rewatch the movie.
Its sad movies arent made like this anymore.
Unfortunately almost all modern movies are cardboard cutout characters with flashy cg. Plus hollywood really hates scifi.
...is it really?
studios only want Billion dollar movies
The other 2 Riddick movies are pretty good too. Pitch Black is still the best of the 3 though.
Al we get is MCU trash these days
Wait-wait-wait... Diesel voiced the Iron Giant?! That is so cool!
Yes he did
And he now the voice of groot for the MCU.
On the same topic with a different actor, Keith David (the "Holy Man"/Priest in Pitch Black) also plays The Arbiter in the Halo franchise, as well as the Voodoo Witch Doctor in Princess and the Frog.
@@VenomousIntentions yep indeed and Goliath from gargoyles Childs from the thing and of course Captain Council and Admiral David Anderson from the Mass Effect games.
jason Grady PHStiger'61 wasn’t he also in one of the Saints Row games as a president or something? As well as Rick and Morty as the president in that show.
The movie is a blend of action, Sci-fi, horror, and survival, very similar to either Predator or Alien, or Lost in Space.
Terminator
There's also some science in it. There are planets out in space that orbit two or more stars. So, this 3 star planet system is possible, I'm not so sure on this eclipse part, or on this life that's on this planet. How did it evolve on such a planet? If there's this eclipse every 22 years, does this day/night last a total of 44 years?
@@sigisoltau6073 The eclipse lasts a month. And then the monsters hide again.
And...an extremely underrated gem of a film! For that matter, the video game was better than all the films and anime of the series.
I like how they flip the traditional plot direction on it’s head in a way. At first you think the “Nickel slick badge” merk is the good guy who’ll get them all out of there alive, and Riddick is the main antagonist, when in reality Johns is not all that great and is addicted to morphine, and Riddick while not having the most clear moral compass, is not truly heartless but realistic in his views and is very aware of his surroundings and can see right through people and their bullshit
All 3 main characters flipped. The girl was selfish and would gladly kill everyone to save herself, and didnt wanna be called the captain, yet in the end sacrifised herself and bravely lead them all. Riddick was a murderous asshole who in the end risked his life to save them.
what i love is that the actual protagonist of the movie is fry, and yet her character growth and morality are rewarded with a violent, albeit heroic, death. the lesson is that Riddick had the better philosophy, even though it was twisted and his traditional "goodness" was entirely inspired by fascination more than anything else.
As a kid I was like how did johns lose!
It's God vs the Devil. Same hollywood story over and over
I saw this movie in theates, in its first week. It totally flew under the radar. I am a big fan of the Iconic Keith David. Mr David never chooses a bad script, and he didn't disappoint in this film. A MUST have for any Sci Fi fan....Brilliant Movie, well written! I wonder what the planet was like when the creatures whose large bones they found, were alive.
My favorite part of this movie is the amazing color scheme. For the first third or so of the film, everything is bright blue because of the configuration of two of the three Suns above the horizon. And then everything switches as one Sun rises and another sets before the eclipse which plunges the whole planet into blackness.
David Twohy's other Riddick movie is like that, too. Where the characters have to avoid the harsh environment of the Planet they're on along with all the other established dangers in the narrative. It's actually quite brilliant.
The planet has three suns and you definitely feel that all throughout the movie. It's hot and oppressive and you almost feel dry-mouthed and dehydrated just watching it lol the environment is almost as much a character as the cast.
It's one of the more thoughtful science fiction stories in recent decades. Because it's such a well thought out concept.
Ehhhh I get what you're saying but using the color blue doesn't make thinks feel hot, it's a cool color
Also when they edited the scenes to look orange that didnt either for me cuz it felt fake
I always chalked the blue color tint to being one of the suns in this solar system being a Type-O star. It would explain the blue hue.
It's funny that Diesel passed on 2 Fast 2 Furious, but Cole Hauser ended up being the villain in that movie.
They say most of your brain shuts down during cryo-sleep. All but the primitive side, the animal side. No wonder I'm still awake...
What an opening line to a film!
@@filmcomicsexplained , can any1 plz explain this: the bioraptor seems to have a straight blade (Ref: 1-the scene where Riddick and Hassan are hiding in the shipwreck and a bioraptor probes them from just above. 2- the blade that pierces Johns.)
Where is that blade coming from? They clearly have vertical curved bone-blades, horizontal bones (not blades), tail, wings and legs. In the above 2 scenes, the blade can be seen to be different from (and away from) the curved skull-blade. So where is that straight-ish blade coming from?

I loved this franchise. I hope they can make another movie, or even a video game, and expand the Necromonger and Underverse. The video games were amazing too.. Butcher Bay and Dark Athena.
Hrag Farra a new movie is in the works
Riddick: furya is in the works. Also Merc city tv series.
Any updates?
Pitch black and chronicles of riddick were freaking awesome the 3rd one was kinda cool but it was yawn inducing and funded solely by vin diesel if I'm remembering correctly
I should give Butcher Bay another try, I never finished it. That game was hard as fuck, and I was playing on the lowest difficulty too.
This is a masterpiece . . .
Wait wait wait. Keith david is LEGENDARY. Keith david was fighting aliens with Roddy piper while vin diesel was breakdancing in madonna videos. Legendary vin diesel indeed!
You forgot him standing off with Kurt Russell in The Thing.

Yeah we need to see how his life was before he got caught by Johns
There are more films... his backstory lol

Gotta admire Vin's commitment to this franchise. Turned down 2 million bucks at the start of his career for Chronicles, the leverage his cameo in Tokya Drift for Riddick. Also went and founded his own game development studio just for two freaking game. Now, at 52 years old, he just tweeted that the script for the final film has been written, and that production is starting up. I expect that this will be the last we ever see of the character on screen. Hopefully, Vin invests in another videogame or even a comic series. Whatever it takes to keep this franchise alive. Riddick, both the character and the universe, just have so much potential that it'd be a shame to see it die with this last film.
I was literally watching your videos when the notification pop up!
Really admire his dedication to the story. The Riddick character has so much potential for more than just movies. I feel all the movies left some holes that could be filled in by some sort of series. Either way I can't wait to see the fourth movie hopefully everything goes well we'll get to see Riddick's home furya
Vin Diesel will remain one of my favourite actors no one i know matches his excitement and love for the industry. He literally makes movies to fund his own movies. Even though some of them aren't that good im sure you can find a little enjoyment out of them.
I remember watching these movies in my teen on sci-fi channel, but your videos make me want to rewatch them uncut!
You keep what you kill.
Riddik is one of my underated cheesy personnal favorite badass. I mean the dude as a concept is one amongst many but the way he's unique traits were exploited in this movie is really neat. From unknow prisonner to beast lurking in the dark to force for good kinda against his primal will. It's pretty neat.
i remember going to see this movie in the theater's after seeing a trailer for it on tv or before another movie???? and it was like WTF, this is so different and so cool at the same time and kept you on edge cuz you didn't know who was going to make it thru the movie.... and even now it's still worth watching.
My cousin said that his son saw Vin Diesel for his make a wish thing, and that Vin Diesel is a nice guy in person.
That full sequence is absolutely sublime. The stages of the eclipse from first sight to its mesmeric rise, until it obscures a whole swathe of the sky, while the suns are progressively obscured - first by the rings and then by the planet itself, interspaced by their effect of developing gloom over world and the desperate characters is true cinema art. And all the time, tension is racked-up by a pulsing orchestral piece supported by a quick - almost aboriginal - riff that is note and moment perfect. Small, but thoughtful details are the slight rainbows around the suns when obscured by the rings, indicative of diffracted light, the two rings themselves are actually rotating in opposite directions, and glowing coronal light patterns can be seen shimmering in the obscuring planet's atmosphere. All of these accessory effects heighten the realism of the sequence, which finishes with a last flare of light before the suns are completely eclipsed...
I really enjoyed this movie, great work.
My thoughts too.
Literally had no idea until this video that Vin Diesel was Iron Giant. Suddenly pictured him saying “Hoooooogaaaaarthhhh” blew my mind!
“We can’t leave...without saying good night!”
I love this whole series. The best movie franchises IMO are the ones that start as original scripts (Riddick, Alien, Mad Max, etc)
I remember watching this movie and it was scary for me I was like 5 or 8

I believe you truly have a gift of explaining things with complete objectivity while delivering your personal opinions in a way that is fresh and unopened to offense. Thank you again, Niyat. Cheers from the USA.
My favorite series. Had on idea he was so invested in the character, I love it.
I loved Pitch Black. The Riddick series is my favorite movies that Vin has done.
God dam bio raptors
The bioraptors are not native to the planet. They can't be, not if they killed off everything else; ecologies grow toward balance. Therefore (I've had fun thinking about this) they've been placed there by another star travelling species to kill off all animals life, to prepare the way for the others to colonize the planet. now that the bio-raptors have accomplished their first task, they become cannibals, and so they will be nearly extinct when the settlers arrive; who will be prepared for them. Near the end of the movie raptors start randomly falling out of the sky; they're attacking each other.
I bought the trilogy and the video game.
Clever Girls
Pitch Blach is a classic masterpiece in the sci-fi survival genre. Vin Dieseil announced RIDDICK FURYA we have been waiting since 2019! this will surely be the end of the Saga of the Chronicles of RIDDICK and Vin Diesel has collaborated for 20 years with David Twohy to interpret his best role.
My dude! Inbetween this movie and the next there is an animated movie which links the two! Watch it to complete the movies if you haven't already!
Pitch Black: Sci-fi horror
Chronicles of Riddick: Sci-fi action
That's quite the genre shift
When it came out I told people how great the movie was. Saw it at the theater twice.
I love Pitch Black. I still watch it from time to time because I really did think it was one of the best sci-fi films of the last 25 years. Thanks for this!
BTW: I am curious about your accent, Niyat. To me, it sounds more like a posh British/London accent than Australian or New Zealandic, but a bit of the Aussie lilt comes through here and there. Can you illuminate me on your origins?
Brilliant movie!
You are spot on, Hector. I can't believe how many that I have known that never knew about this movie, and they love it after seeing it. It totally flew under the radar when it first debuted.
I was 14 years old when i saw this at the movies 19 years ago😬time fly so quickly
Sometimes I like to imagine a world where Fry survived the encounter and the future movies become deeper character driven stories. Her character was an interesting antithesis to Riddick by the end of it.
It's an interesting thought to explore, but I think it would loop back to Fry turning into a character like the female "Riddick" bounty described in the original draft.
Fry's arc in the film is her seeking redemption after being willing to sacrifice the passengers to save her own skin, and only being spared the guilt of having done so because she waits too long before the ship is totally doomed. Throughout the film, Riddick praises her survival instincts, tells her she did nothing wrong (or would have done, in this case), and even proposes she repeat the decision in miniature by leaving Jack and Imam to their fate when catches up to him at the shuttle. Although she never really rebuts his judgement of her thoughts and actions, she chooses not to follow through on "what would Riddick do?", twice: forcing him to help her save Jack and Imam, then sacrificing herself so Riddick can fly the shuttle. The only way Fry could leave on the shuttle was to become like Riddick, whether going as far as becoming someone approaching the unused female bounty or becoming someone more like how Jack/Kira is handled in Chronicles.
Either way, you're entirely right, it could have been an interesting follow-up to see.
Nice vid. Thanks. What about the idea that part of Frye’s redemption is that after telling Riddick she would die for the others she died by being taken skyward (like heavenward) and not fed upon like many of the others? BTW, I love Pitchblack and think it’s an instant classic!

I love that shout, very real. Not some fake movie yell, I could believe Vin Diesel was actually thinking he`d be fighting some spacemonster.
The story reminded me of Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall"
Please do Legion the move...!!!
You are by far my favorite channel. Amazing video
Thanks Oschara!
David Twohy also directed The Arrival 1996 starring Charlie Sheen. A masterpiece of a movie in my opinion.
I am beyond happy you chose to do this video. Thank you! Also Riddick has the best code of honor I have found in most media.
P.s. if any one knows of a character like him let me know.
I had a major thing for Claudia Black and was a fan of Farscape so fell in love with Pitch Black. The franchise is one of the few I can remember and still be amazed on how the story changed and got better. Hollyweird is all but bankrupt on morals and imagination now to the point of not watching movies in over a decade. I wish I could relive the 80's up to 2000 when icons were made and not just remakes of comic books.
Vin turned down 2 million bucks to star in 2 fast 2 furious and spent 50k to ensure the Riddick series kept going. What a bad ass! I love both franchises but Vin will always be Richard B. Riddick.

I loved this film so much! I used to watch it with my dad before he died so it’s close to my heart.
Sorry for your loss.
Pitch Black is what I would rate above average but not spectacular but it's so good it does have it's flaws. Namely, a budget problem. However, the characters are well fleshed out. Overall, the story is what motivates this movie so well. The Chronicles of Riddick does something few movies do: it takes the sequel into an entirely new direction that is directly based on the previous film by expanding on its world building. Think Alien to Aliens.
such a good film that its sequels so fundamentally misunderstood. if you haven't played the games, they're absolutely some of the best and most overshadowed licensed games.
Thanks man, you once again helped decide which movie I am going to watch tonight :-) Thanks and have a good one.
Aaaah pitch black!?. Almost forgotten about this gem. It's a classic. It's a great movie. Gonna roll a big joint and watch it tonight 😊
One of the most underrated Space/Sci-Fi movies
It had all the clichés and beats yet the indie feel, bleak colors, terrific pacing and hard working performers elevated it to greatness. Take any one ingredient out of this movie and you have straight-to-video or SyFy channel dreck.
There was nothing in Pitch Black about Riddick being a super-powered "Furyon." Part of the reason his character in this movie was so interesting was because he was a strong, resolute, slightly amoral human, albeit with augmented vision.
Dammit. Watching this at work and now I just wanna go home and watch Pitch Black again...
Michael Howell is right--the young men with Imam are his novices, not offspring, and Johns's opioid stash is his own. The extended cut adds more ambiguity to Johns's addiction, as he explains to Fry that Riddick once stabbed him in the spine, narrowly missing the nerve cord and breaking off part of the blade. Said fragment has remained in his body, resulting in chronic pain since.
I can't believe this movie is 20 years old already!
First Hi-Top Films post and then FilmComicsExplained posts? It's like Christmas all over again
Interesting fact: the scene where Riddick escapes his bonds by dislocating his arms? Apparently vin diesel actually did the stunt himself! He's double jointed and hypermobile in his shoulders and arms. The thing was, they had a second pair of shackles made, and they pulled his wrists tighter in, so he couldn't complete the full rotation, so they used most of the footage from the first set of looser shackles where he did the stunt. You hear them talk about it in the commentary in the original dvd release.
I love the Riddick series. I'm impressed with your deep dive for info. Fantastic work! 💚
I am now eagerly awaiting "Chronicles Of Riddick (2004) Explored"

Riddick: Didn't know who it was fucking with
Best line ever
I really liked Pitch Black when I first saw it as I didn't really know anything about it. The monsters were SUPER scary, some of the best creatures ever. The "mites/isopods" in Cloverfield, are similar and equally as scary since we only see flashes of them.
Ther is also "Dark fury" animated movie with action set between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick.
I can watch this movie every day twice on Sunday. This movie is definitely one of my favorites.
Pitch Black. The Chronicles of Riddick. Both exceptional films for character, action, and especially story development. Chronicles of Riddick is phenomenal sequel blending past, present, & future for the universe Riddick dwells in. I wish all films took the time to be so intense with such depth of their characters & integral story elements. One can play the DVD versions of Pitch Black & Chronicles over & over, even into 2020, they both still seem timeless & relevant.
I rented this out and took the night off work with no regrets 🙂
