My toilet was leaking, so I called three plumbers asking how much it would cost for them to fix it. Assuming it was the wax ring that needed replacing, the lowest price I was quoted was $175. Then I searched for and found this video instead. And so with about fifteen dollars worth of supplies from Home Depot and forty five minutes of effort following your instructions one step at a time, I now have a working toilet and a dry floor. THANK YOU VERY MUCH and enjoy your cup of coffee!

I’m not a plumber and I try to be a do-it-yourselfer whenever possible, but it’s frustrating to hear people complain about being ripped off by prices that professionals charge for simple repairs. We all know that time is money. You’re paying for their time as well as saving your time, so theirs a price for that. Do you really think someone is going to go into business, come over to your house not knowing exactly what all is involved, scheduling their day accordingly, and replace a wax ring on your toilet charging you only $40 or so? I think it’s great that this information is out there for those of us who wish to do it ourselves to save some money but don’t beat up the businessman who’s trying to make a living. I know people who would gladly pay the price to have someone else do it , just so they don’t have to mess with it or to free up their own time. Thanks for the video, very informative & appreciated.

Another tip for aligning the toilet with the flange bolts is to cut some plastic straws about 6" long and place them over the bolts. As you lower the toilet bowl onto the straws, they will slide right in place and onto the bolts. Great job as always, Leah! 👍

A small tip from my experience: Sometimes you unable to see a small leakage from water supply line, because it leaks about 1 drop in a minute. To test this kind of leakage you can use a regular toilet paper sheets. Just put it on a possible problem area (put on the floor below connection or wrap around the tube) for a couple of hours. It shows you whether leaks or not even if waterdrops will dry.

Informative and calming instruction. Might add that before lifting the toilet, remove the tank's lid. Anything to make it lighter is helpful! And it might also avoid it flipping off and breaking when lifting and moving the toilet. Enjoy your thoroughness and subscribers that respect your good work.

I'm going to add some advice. If the flange is 3/8" above the finished floor(where it should be) use a regular bowl wax. The bowl wax is not designed to be a "waterproof" seal. It's designed to prevent odor and airborne moisture. There's a horn integral with the toilet. That horn will sit down inside the flange. If you use a bowl wax with the added plastic horn, the water will splash against that plastic horn. Sometimes, the flange is only 3" and using the extra plastic horn type bowl wax will distort the plastic and cause leaks. That's bad. Why the extra horn? If the flange is flush with the finished floor, the integral horn will be just above the flange, not down inside the flange. That's bad. So, they've made this double wax or an added horn to the wax to somehow mitigate that problem. Homeowners will often have a new floor added on top of an existing floor without raising the flange. That has caused more destroyed bathroom floors than anything else. A properly installed flange sits 3/8" above the floor. A master plumber with 44 years in the trade.. Believe what I'm telling y'all

Leah, I first viewed one of of your videos several years ago. I'm here now for instructions on how to replace a toilet. Browsed thru several and eventually found yours. It was a pleasure seeing you again. Thanks for your advice. Very helpful. I do hope you are well and happy.

Leah this is a great video and you are great in explaining things. I had 48 years in the plumbing field before i retired. I saw only one mistake and that is you should have put the wax seal to the bottom of the bowl not on the floor, but that is no big problem, lots of plumber do it that way. Keep the videos coming.

I’ve wood floor and hope it’s not too bad. One of the bolts on flange too rusted came loose. What other problems could there be when I try to replace wax ring ?

Good one Leah. Personally I ccan do a lot of things as DYIr, but plumging is not high on my list. One thing I have noticed, a lot of the valves and fixes you buy from the hardware store are good things for the DYIer and are user friendly. With that said, I am doing better in the plumbing area. Thanks for the video. Be safe. Tim

I don't know if you will see this or not since you have so many videos and comments to deal with, however, I wanted to thank you for doing your channel. Your channel is what the internet should be 100%. Something that helps folks and educates them as well as help them save money.. You make a real difference for people and have taught me a considerable amount of things as well. I wish you all the best and thank you again.

I bought the blue ring and installed it with only the guidance from the video. So far so good it has been a day with no leaks! I'm excited to try caulking the tub now. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for dropping some knowledge on us! Love your videos . I installed a brand new toilet, but a couple months later dark blotches formed on the right side/front of the toilet. For some more context, I laid down sheet vinyl flooring. It’s on a slab of mostly leveled concrete. I caulked all around the toilet so not sure how it could be that, but that’s what I’m thinking it is. I used the wax ring that came with the toilet. It felt small and EXTREMELY SOFT. Like abnormally mushy. What’s the texture supposed feel like, good amount of resistance, right?
Also, I learned there’s two sizes of wax ring? My flange had a break in it from the previous owner, so I had to buy an adapter/extension. Maybe I need a bigger ring?
Going to cut out a portion of the affected flooring and lay some newspapers down to see where the possible origin is. Thx again for your contributions to society. Your influence touches so many. My neighbor and I were talking abt my problem, and she said I should check you channel on UA-cam. I said I knew abt her a while ago! 😎 thanks again!

Thank you for this video. My brother got very sick so I am living with him for a little while to help out. I was in the basement doing laundry and he flushed the toilet above and water started pouring down on the floor in the basement. It's been years since I changed a wax ring and flange out and you're video helped me refresh my mind lol
    Thanks again!!!
