Interesting video Pete. A possible Patreon class sounds good.

Thanks Pete. I'd be interested. I'm always searching for that natural traditional look. But more importantly I am searching for the feel. Thanks.

@AndrewAdcock - Thank you - good to know. Yeah, feel is very subjective, but I live in hope of an art package that really nails it.

What do you think about ArtRage Vitae? I think the oils can get thicker and have a more natural feel than Rebelle.

@gurujot951 I keep going back to it from time to time to have a play, but the impasto isn't quite convincing, colour mixing was causing me issues, and it just doesn't offer the watercolour interaction with texture that Rebelle can. There hasn't been a new version for quite some time, so I am keeping an eye on it to see if they offer anything new - here's hoping

As I see it Pete, the reason small textures (WC paper, Canvas) work is that they are not expected to follow the subject matter, the curve of a cheek, fern fronds etc. This is the downfall of programs that are supposed to turn a photo into a painting. Their "brushstrokes" do not follow the subject matter. There's just no substitute for making brush marks, with a stylus, as one would with "real" paint. If we want more real paintings, we have to put in the same real work that has ALWAYS been necessary.
An overlay brush texture is only convincing to me if I paint it last, 50% gray and follow what I have painted on layers below.
Thank for all your study on this!

@richardhaas1989 Very true. I was looking at some Lucien Freud artwork recently and just reminding myself of the amazing sense of form through the direction of the strokes. There is no beating putting in the hard work indeed!

I wondered if the control for paint penetration into a texture was more a simulation of how loaded with paint the "brush" is rather than a measure of how resistant the texture was to paint ingress in the deeper areas. That could just be my natural pedant talking though as the effect is much the same.

Yeah I see what you are saying - a kind of depth of paint on the brush - but usually that would be called loading and it would be more to do with how long the paint lasted before it runs out, or how thick it puts down impasto. The fact the slider is still called depth is a little confusing, but as long as you know how it works that's fine by me.
