They literally need rebelle 7 ported to ipad with all features I really love their reference window/liabrary feature its soo good.. for the inferface you talked about they would probably need to either go procreate direction or say screw it and do the clip studio paint way with simple mode and studio mode.
I recently watched videos, and it's amazing Thank you
@noonmong2 much appreciated, thank you!
Painter is my favorite raster program - great brushes, pencils, inking brushes for comics - good brush calibration and smoothing - the best blenders also. I prefer it to almost everything else for just straight drawing and painting, however it needs more practical tools like clipping layers, warp mesh, adjustment layers, etc. Also needs an upgrade to the basic tools in a few places - needs ability to make straight lines by holding Shift instead of the straight lines tool which is slow for example. The UI is a tad clunky in some places but mostly I like it just fine - being able to dock panels any way I like and create custom panels works great. Sadly I fear that Painter is done - there was no Painter 2024 and no announcement of Painter 2025 yet. I hope I am wrong - I will be really sad if Painter goes away. Also I don't need AI and don't want AI. We all know that Adobe has lost a lot of users lately. Alludo/Corel could grab some new users just by improving some features and rejecting AI in my opinion (and lowering the price).
@toad1971 I completely agree. Painter was my favourite App for a long time. It has a lot of UI flexibility & was great from making custom icon inputs that I used on my MS Surface tablet at the time. I am not going to hold my breath but it would be a shame if it is done.
Thank you Sir...
@basharts6944 You are most welcome :-)
I still use my 2018 license time to time, but I've been wondering when a later version would come out.
I am the same. I very occasionally use the 2023 version, but increasingly infrequently now.
Corel Painter 2023 is obsolete compared to Rebelle 7. I have both.
@jeanrenaudviers right now I would completely agree. Still have vague hopes of a new and improved Corel Painter, but until then, Rebelle is no way ahead. I am looking forward to see what they do with Rebelle 8 this year.
I've only used Painter so far, but Corel doesn't upgrade Painter and very disappointing to only sell brush packs Rebelle, by comparison, looks very intuitive and reasonable This video helped me a lot, Thanks
@noonmong2 Yeah - I did a video on "where is Corel Painter 2024". I am looking forward to seeing what Rebelle 8 looks like this year. Happy to help, thanks for the feedback :-)
Couldn't agree more...don't put in features till they are solid.
@richardhaas1989 I am optimistic that lessons have been learnt from the Rebelle 7 launch, so here's hoping :-)
Thank you for sharing your insight 😊
@aline9123 You are very welcome! It is always good to know when people find the content useful :-)
The only thing I wish Corel Painter had built-in is a Gamut Mask device. I didn't realize just how much wasn't taught to me about color back at university. I've found AI to be stale and it's not a style I really prefer for illustrations. I almost wish most commercial art today looked like those old painted film illustrations because they were warmer or had exciting brush strokes. I might even explore older art styles just to escape from photorealism.
@B.B.Digital_Forest I totally agree. Traditional had a lot of subtle quality that has been lost in most digital work. I am increasingly gravitating back towards traditional work to enjoy that surface quality.
Corel have been failing on Painter since 2007, when the last meaningful upgrade was released. I was on the 'advisory board' for a few years until I quit when it became abundantly clear Corel had no interest in the input of artists or improving the software, only wanting to squeeze as much money from the customer until the product was wrung dry. Which I imagine it now is. Part of the issue too was that when they took bought the software from Metacreations they had no idea how to modify much of the code, most of which hasn't changed in 25 years. Since 2020 I've been using Paintstorm. IMO the brushes are unmatched, way ahead of Rebelle 7, ArtRage and the rest. R7 is great for gimmicks like dripping watercolours and glitter paint, but if you're using the software for work, Paintstorm is the business. The only reason I'm browsing videos is that Paintstorm Studio, like many of the other companies, seem to have given up on their product. Maybe everyone is getting into AI, where the money is.
I love euan. See what I accidentally did below …. Ty for this video and how he approached the mark making and I relate to the slow start to speed up the drawing. Great video
@kevmann5284 Thanks for the feedback. Very much appreciated! :-)
I wonder if the Humble Bundle sales have actually been bad for Corel. Yes, they probably sold more copies during those sales, but at a much lower cost. Providing the nth-1 version via Humble Bundle a number of years in a row, predictably, gives users less impetus to upgrade, especially considering the small feature gap between versions. I would love to see new versions of Painter and Paint Shop Pro, but it's been so long since they released anything new, every time I periodically check their website, I'm almost expecting to see a notice saying the domain has expired because the algorithm has detected that the income from sales has fallen below the cost of keeping the website alive.
Really helped me see why Painter might be stagnating. I hadn't consider the effects of AI on them. I hope they start trimming the fat and make painter work on more hardware. Who knows maybe we'll see another program that is available on Linux to (probably not from corel but someone maybe).
@Kaffius Thanks. I don't use Linux, but I can see it is a bit like Android - a lot of the "best" programs miss it out.
When moving around the metallic paint changes and it looks like it is reflecting something. I have asked Rebelle if there was a way for me to give the metallic engine an image of mine to reflect. They said there wasn't. Maybe some day we'll get that.
@richardhaas1989 Yeah, it seems to have a baked in reflection map - presumably because it is tied to the mechanism. Personally, as I said, I hope they go a properly lit 2.5 D surface which I think would also work with the metallics, but like you say, you could still have the option to load in an environment map for any reflective surfaces. Looking forward to seeing what they can do with it.
One of your best Rebelle videos, Pete. That’s saying something, because I’ve enjoyed and used them all! Thanks so much.
@sax0520 You are very welcome. That is genuinely really appreciated - made my weekend :-)
I use it as I would a photo library for creating covers and designs from multiple images. It is a wonderful a tool that randomly produces strange, often dazzling but mostly sterile imagery. The creative part comes in trying to adapt them, to give them some soul.
@djjjk Thanks. It is interesting to see how people who choose to use it are incorporating it into their workflows. I have been following Invoke AI for a while and the level of control it offers is extremely impressive. So much more than a text prompt and a random roll of the dice. But still just a tool. Like you say, finding something meaningful remains the challenge ...
I’ve got the ones that just slip over the normal tip and love them so far. Great at slowing down the stylus so it’s not so wily nilly. I can’t image not using them now.
Yes, they certainly improve the feel. The only thing I found was that they felt a little bit chunky for drawing or fine detail, fine for painting though. I am currently using a Norris Digital Jumbo on the Samsung Tab s9 ultra with the Samsung removable screen protector. It has a really good fine tip and feels very much like pen/pencil in terms of control. Drawing on glass is way too shiny so anything that helps is a big improvement though.
@@BasementPicasso luckily I scribble my drawings so the lack of fine detail actually works in my favor!
Basic things Rebelle lacks and I wish they would fix these basic things before adding features. No bottom drop/accumulation of water and pigment to continue with lighter tone. Colors do not dry with lighter tone. Mop is really, terrible. Washes, an essential part of watercolor, are horrible. Color mixing is a joke. Spatter is very limited. The opacity of the paint is too confusing. They really should make it so that only adding water affects opacity. This would be a big step towards improving the app. Now, it's all over the place, from the brush creator to granulation. Dry brushes are not random enough. Dry brushes, an essential part of watercolor, are useless in Rebelle. Opacity and visual settings are reset every time you switch a brush. Very annoying. Where are all the brush shapes hidden, for example the flat brush's template? If Expresii had better canvases and some more granulation/flocculation, it would give escape motions a run for their money. I swear if I see water color drips on one of their marketing videos (Hi Justin) I'm going to be ill. I have gone back to Corel and traditional.
@nicolaskrinis7614 Yeah, I can sympathise with a lot of your frustration. I agree that opacity / transparency is a dark art at times, it frustrates me as well. It is possible to bake opacity and visual settings into a brush as well as specific colour. The brush creator is very comprehensive, but not intuitive now. I have seen expresii but never used it - yeah more competition would be good. Like you I am gravitating back to more traditional work as well :-)
@@BasementPicasso Thanks for the reply :) I think that a lot of people fell for it thinking that wow, these are real drips, and it should perform the same as the real deal. By the time I figure out how to get the same effect with digital as I do with traditional, the intuitiveness and spontaneity is gone. I have tried loose architectural on rebelle, but do I ever struggle. One thing we tend to forget, is the nuances of watercolor are huge. How much water a mop brush can hold, the springiness of synthetic vs sable/squirrel, etc. Last but not least, I don't think I'll ever understand how to hold/use a pen like a brush. To all those who produce beautiful art with rebelle, hats off, I just can't do it.
@@nicolaskrinis7614 Yeah the drips look great in videos but it is the subtlety that matters. I am increasingly rating art packages on how much they get out of your way. How intuitive are they and how little interface do you need. Anything else just pulls you out of the flow.
@@BasementPicasso Agree 100%. A brush, pigment, water, and a cloth, would work like a charm. The rest is all needless. I should also mention that I am a big fan of yours :)
@@nicolaskrinis7614 Thank you. That is genuinely appreciated 🙂 I really appreciate when people take the time to share their thoughts. I am interested to know the challenges that others face or what works best. It gives me ideas and helps me both in my own art and with content on the channel. So thanks again!!!
Thanks for an interesting video. I will certainly give this a try.
@joycourtney Thanks for the feedback, that is much appreciated! Let me know if you come up with any tips of your own.
Great video, I've been wondering whether there would be a new version of Painter too. I wish they would at leat remove the ad popups though. AI is the easy go to for these companies at the moment but i think the incorporation of more 3D into painting software would be useful and more rewarding creatively, 3D software like Blender are incorporating more tools for painterly and stylised art and better drawing and animation tools like Grease Pencil.
@artsquirrel Thank you. much appreciated. I have seen a little about grease pencil but not used it myself. I think it is a great point though. The sort of surface texture that interests me is almost 2.5D sculpting and it does feel like some 3d style tools would fit well into that.
@@BasementPicasso yes 2.5d is interesting to me as well, Blender's sculpting tools are good for that, I have also experimented with other methods. I wish I could incorporate that with the digital oils of Rebelle somehow, I'm hoping they allow exportation of height map and normal map from the paintings one day. All the best.
Corel has some remarkable brushes, but it would be hard for them to beat Rebelle's watercolor, metallic paints, and PRICE. People new to digital art aren't going to pay $400 for Painter, when they can get Rebelle for $90 to $150, and occasionally the older version for $10. If Corel can keep the brushes, lower the price, and make the program easier to use, then they can compete. Corel already has Vision FX image generation, so they can always work to improve that.
@MrTugwit Completely agree. Haven't looked at Vision FX image generation so I will take a look - thanks for the suggestion.
@@BasementPicasso Vision FX does better with some things, like scenery. If you ask it to draw a monkey the eyes can be very odd, and it may have extra fingers, etc.
@@MrTugwit is it purely text to image? I think what makes Invoke so string is the blend of text to image, inpainting, regional guidance and control layers. Combine that with manual painting and you have a huge amount of control. I might do a video on it at some point
@@BasementPicasso It's a plugin for Painter, Paintshop, Photoshop, Affinity. It basically makes variations of images depending on your text prompts. Open an image, which can be a photo or your painting. In Painter or Paintshop choose Effects menu > Vision FX. Put in your text prompts, and it will make variations of your image. Some are lousy, some are good. I have a fast processor, and it takes about 1 minute to make an image. Sometimes instead of an image you get NSFW, which means "not safe for work". I have no idea how it decides that. The images are not nearly as good as Bing Image Creator. There's a brief summary "How to use Vision FX 2.0" at ua-cam.com/video/noSLTH9OzQE/v-deo.html
@@BasementPicasso I have Vision FX 2.0 now, and it is MUCH improved, MUCH faster, and will also do original images from text prompts alone. It is now MUCH more useful.
Corel has some unique brushes and mechanics (every software has its own look and feel). But the layer thing sucks, and the UI is so cumbersome, and not friendly at all to new users. They need a ground up redesign of their UI.
@gurujot951 Completely agree. Some of the brushes are excellent. It was a big part of why I got into it in the first place. But it does just feel like a very old piece of software now
Just for the record, Painter is usually included in a Humble Bundle in Autumn, I got 2019, 2021 and now 2023 for basically nothing, given that they also include other software with it. This time it's packaged with Corel Draw and Paint Shop Pro, plus other goodies.
@Hayreddin Yes indeed, good point. I actually picked up Corel Painter 2023 in one of the Humble Bundles. Definitely better value if you can get it.
The ai imaging is not creative even if it may appear to be so to humans. Chat bot algorithms from several years ago that were kind of bad had the ability to fool humans into personifying the chat bot in its early and rather limited days. Those type of creative assumptions brought on by the sci-fi we’ve consumed in the past, to me that proves that the human mind is much more creative than any machine for better and for worse. All of these things are large language models that average the training data and try to match the output to the words you’ve typed in. Algorithms have been doing this sort of thing for a while with numbers or other things, it just seems a lot crazier when it’s images or videos.
@Foxfire-chan yeah I agree - I see it as interesting rather than genuinely creative at a human level (yet!)
1. Metallic Paint - Don't care, will not be using 2. Layer Filters - Don't care 3. Color Panel - I do like the color panel a lot. 4. Brush Creator - time will tell 5. Structures - seems like a gimmick, don't care 6. Paper Surfaces, I liked the existing papers just fine. I like the Ruler tool. I like the paths for SVG imports.
@Jason_Carnes Thanks for the comments. What do you use to create paths? It isn't something I have used so far. Interested to know what do you use it for?
@@BasementPicasso I understand that Rebelle is first and foremost a realistic painting software. But the Path tool opens up possibilities into Design work, like logos and other illustration type designs that are typically dominated by Illustrator/InDesign but lack the powerful brushes that Rebelle brings to the table.
They really. Need to make it a stand alone version in 2024 for iPads. I thought Apple was slow when realizing artists needs. But escape motion is really next level slow. Artists are on the go and don’t want to carry around a large device. Apple has finally understood when will escape motion step up… or will they ever?
@RobertSharmaOfficial A very good point - completely agree mobile apps would be fantastic. I have tried AstroPad for iPad and SuperDisplay for android that allow you to work on the tablet at home but it is a little fiddly and nowhere near as fluid as a native app. They are a relatively small team and the framework they have used is not easy to port to mobile. Hopefully one day though!
Thank you, you say many good things and show a lot of truth. I believe that this slow precision is the best way to know and control oneself in the act of drawing and painting. Everyone can try and understand. We need to go back to our roots to take to the sea and ride the waves of the new sea that awaits us out there, always. Thank you again.
Most kind, thank you. Feedback like this is very motivational to help make new content!
Is it me or Rebelle doesn't import masks together with PSD files from Photoshop?
I wasn't aware of that. I don't tend to use Adobe products, even before their recent controversies, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are elements within a PSD file that don't map across correctly.
@@BasementPicasso Unfortunately they don't seem to map across correctly. Odd thing is other software like Krita/ Clip Studio and Paintstorm have no problems. That's why I asked. I thought you might know something and that I was the problem.
@@Frostensen Sorry, I don't have any further info for you. If you can spare the time & energy it would be worth reporting on their forum www.escapemotions.com/community/forum/c/134/Rebelle-7-support-other-issues
AND they dont allow you to simply upgrade from earlier versions, like version 3 for example, my case...
Yeah, that is not great - I hadn't appreciated that!
Rebelle 7 Pro is on sale right now for $15 (in case the price was your issue, rather than the upgrade/uninstall-reinstall process).

Interesting video Pete. A possible Patreon class sounds good.
Thank you. Much appreciated - I am working on some ideas ...
For heaven's sake people use NATURAL media. DRAW for Christ's sake! Express yourself. Be individual! DON'T rely on software that purports to be an emulation of natural media. If you DRAW with EMOTION and FEELING and SOUL you are an ARTIST. If you rely on software that invites you to create so called 'Art' by perpetually using the 'back' button to support your lack of skill you are demeaning the artists who have spent a lifetime learning the skills to express their emotions about whatever the subject is. Why use a support that MECHANISES and continuously FAILS to convey the INTIMACY and SOULFULNESS of a REAL ARTIST???? Sorry REBELLE you are decrying and roboticizing the HUMAN SPIRIT. Leave it alone. You are encouraging laziness. That is NOT what ART is about. It's bad enough with AI taking over... and if that isn't a demonstration of laziness, I don't know what is...
@Peter-oc8qc so I am with you on the AI art - typing a few words in and getting a picture is lazy and soul-less. But even then, as part of a workflow, for exploration, I think it has value. As someone that has been learning art for 35+ years, 50/50 traditional/digital, my experience has been that digital art programs largely take a lot of the same skill in terms of composition, colour, structure, value, edge control etc. Having been looking at a medium sized tube of cadmium red for well over £400 as part of my own shift back towards traditional art, I think there is also a lot of considerations in terms of accessibility and freedom that digital art offers. My nieces love to draw on my computer - they ask to do it every time they visit, so I think there is plenty of room in this world for both to exist. Nobody is taking traditional art away from you. I am gravitating back to traditional because I think AI will ultimately devalue digital art, but mainly because digital just doesn't emulate the feel of reel texture and materials (yet). I hope it continues to get better - but I like having the choice to do either.
I have Rebelle 5 and was thinking about upgrading to 7. Your video and the comments below have helped me to decide to wait, maybe infinitely. Especially as I read that there is not an existing user discount to upgrade.
@philiptownsend4026 Happy to help. Hope you can take advantage of a sale at some point :-)
Thank you very must for the review still usefull in 2024. 👍🏼(greets from the Netherlands.)
@michalbradw My pleasure! It's always much appreciated when someone takes a minute to provide feedback. Thank you.
Combine the layers, save as a jpeg, reload the single layer jpeg with the two effect and now use the wet tool. It will work.
Good idea, thanks
As I see it Pete, the reason small textures (WC paper, Canvas) work is that they are not expected to follow the subject matter, the curve of a cheek, fern fronds etc. This is the downfall of programs that are supposed to turn a photo into a painting. Their "brushstrokes" do not follow the subject matter. There's just no substitute for making brush marks, with a stylus, as one would with "real" paint. If we want more real paintings, we have to put in the same real work that has ALWAYS been necessary. An overlay brush texture is only convincing to me if I paint it last, 50% gray and follow what I have painted on layers below. Thank for all your study on this!
@richardhaas1989 Very true. I was looking at some Lucien Freud artwork recently and just reminding myself of the amazing sense of form through the direction of the strokes. There is no beating putting in the hard work indeed!
What do you think about ArtRage Vitae? I think the oils can get thicker and have a more natural feel than Rebelle.
@gurujot951 I keep going back to it from time to time to have a play, but the impasto isn't quite convincing, colour mixing was causing me issues, and it just doesn't offer the watercolour interaction with texture that Rebelle can. There hasn't been a new version for quite some time, so I am keeping an eye on it to see if they offer anything new - here's hoping
I keep coming back to Rebelle because I love what they're trying to do with this software but it never runs for more than 5 minutes before crashing completely. I just don't have the patience to deal with something this unstable. I first purchased Rebelle about a year ago and have downloaded numerous "bug fix/crash fix" updates that have been released in that timeframe but none of them seem to make any difference. It's buggy. It constantly crashes. Right now it's absolutely not worth a purchase.
@impostersyndromeart sorry to hear that - yes, sounds like you are having an even worse time than me :-( I have found 7.1 onwards to be more stable although still with the occasional crash, but I can get multi-hour sessions usually without issue.
You are running on a Mac I presume?

Thanks Pete. I'd be interested. I'm always searching for that natural traditional look. But more importantly I am searching for the feel. Thanks.
@AndrewAdcock - Thank you - good to know. Yeah, feel is very subjective, but I live in hope of an art package that really nails it.
I wondered if the control for paint penetration into a texture was more a simulation of how loaded with paint the "brush" is rather than a measure of how resistant the texture was to paint ingress in the deeper areas. That could just be my natural pedant talking though as the effect is much the same.
Yeah I see what you are saying - a kind of depth of paint on the brush - but usually that would be called loading and it would be more to do with how long the paint lasted before it runs out, or how thick it puts down impasto. The fact the slider is still called depth is a little confusing, but as long as you know how it works that's fine by me.
I knew about Rebelle a few months ago, and I like it a lot. It feels more natural than Corel. I love Rebelle's Perspective and Rulers tools so much, that I can't see myself using any other software in the foreseeable future.
Yes, I very much agree with the feel of Rebelle being much more intuitive than Corel.
I own Rebelle 5. is version 7 worth the $149.99 pricetag upgrade?
@Dajante Good question. There is a detailed comparison list at www.escapemotions.com/products/rebelle/about. That might help see if there are enough features to upgrade for full price, otherwise maybe wait for a sale (there was one prior to launch). Early version of 7.0 were pretty unstable, but 7.1.X has been a big improvement (not perfect) but good. I have 6 & 7 installed but only ever use 7 now.
@@BasementPicassoThanks for the answer
Maybe you have better luck than I do with Rebelle, but I have version 7 and it's done nothing but crash. I haven't been able to complete even one illustration on it. Opened it today for the first time after installing the most recent update and literally drew one circle and the software crashed.
@@willfenholtart Yeah, that is not good. What version are you on - wondering if a completely fresh install might help? Have you contacted Escape Motions Support?
@@BasementPicasso Windows 64 bit version 7.1.4. Just upgraded to 7.1.5 today so maybe it’ll be better but not really holding my breath, and no never contacted support.
Thanks for a very informative video, I am at the crossroads between choosing corel painter 2023 and rebel 7. I am coming from a graphic design background previously using illustrator and corel draw and want something that can produce large canvas prints( 1m x 2m )and scaling but with more of an interactive, organic brushes colour mixing and feel and the possibility of adding /adjusting layers, tints etc . Although photoshop might be able to handle the task I am trying to avoid the subscription business model.
@simoncossettini9680 You are welcome. Corel Painter 2023 can be picked up on sale occasionally through things like Humble Bundle sales which is how I upgraded. I don't see it being worth a full price upgrade. I am not sure if it is still being worked on - I will be doing a video on "where is Corel Painter 2024?". Rebelle 7 is much more stable now (although not perfect) and for me is the better all round package with much better traditional feeling tools. Hope that helps
What I find disappointing is for years now we still don't have a proper fill tool with pixal expansion. Something so simple should have been i,plemented long long ago
@cosmicfxx Yeah I would also like a fill brush to quickly draw filled shapes - like infinite painter has!
One minute starting might be a personal issue. My Rebelle starts in 10 seconds. Love the update review. Kinda inspires me to use stencils!
Interesting ... what OS / system are you running on? I have win 11, core i9 & RTX 2080
Since Escape listens to you: Consider asking them to add a lock button on the stencils on the orange five-circle menu. This will avoid moving it during the whole process! Thats a good idea on how to use stencils!
@RobertHopkinsArt - great idea, thank you! I have logged it as a suggestion on the forum for now - and credited you for the idea :-)
The post describes our idea perfectly! Have a great day!
Krita never needs to "know" ahead of start which tablet I'm using. I just start Krita (for years now) and it works with fingertip, mouse or whatever tablet I've connected... all at once. I have to start and restart every time I switch from laptop screen stylus and XP-Pen tablet with Rebelle. No problems with Nanopixel on a Ryzen 5 pc.
@richardhaas1989 I think some things just run WinTab drivers which generally work - e.g. ArtRage and Realistic. Is it an AMD GPU on your Ryzen PC? Wondering if it is an Nvidia specific issue?
@@BasementPicasso If I set Rebelle to Wintab the laptop screen stylus works but the XP-Pen tablet does not. If I set Rebelle to Wacom, XP-Pen works fine but the screen stylus does not. I wonder about a hardware issue since this has always how it has been through several laptops and Krita, Lightroom etc, just work.
Companies that ship bugs: I'm forced to wait until late cycle before upgrading. Hope they understand that, because I'm sure they'd rather have the money at release.
@ritzenhauf - I think that is completely understandable. With hindsight, I am slightly less comfortable with having promoted Rebelle ahead of launch. I am just doing an update for Rebelle version 7.1.X - it is much improved
Game and productivity software companies used to hire enough quality testing to release solid product. Relying on customers to do it is shady. We've paid enough.
@@ritzenhauf Yes, I completely agree - Money first, customer experience second is a bad trend.
I downloaded the trial version, what piqued my curiosity about this software was the ability to create digital art that looks like an actual real counterpart. Some features added in this version make your paintings look fake, so to speak, so I refrain from using them. All in all, I think that Escape Motions needs a couple more versions to fine tune their software. It is not a bad app, but they can do better for sure.
