  • John LaVange is the one member of TBDBITL who receives a full tuition scholarship given his role as drum major. Not only is he appreciative of the financial support itself, but he also says its even more special given that support comes from those who care about the band so much.

Ohio State University has an impressive marching band and John LaVange has been their top drum major. He was and is a blessing to that school.

Well said and well done, John. I would not trade my days in a marching band for anything in the world. From the 5th grade through my senior year in high school, and through four years of college, I played my trumpet alongside my classmates. Being part of a marching band taught me how to become part of something larger, how to work as a team, and how to excel as a person within that structure. Oh, and playing music was cool also. :-)

Well, John, I thought you were an excellent drum major.
It's just a shame that your counties' backward system requires students to perform in exchange for their education.
Education should be free for all.
Joining a band would then be a choice, not an obligation...

They perform because they love the art and they have the talent. Let's not rob talented people of their passion by twisting it to be a burden.

No they don't, The first thing John said in the video was that he applied for the position in order to get a scholarship!
He may have enjoyed his time as drum major but the present system simply robs him of the choice, whether to join the band of not.
He is obliged to join the band, obliged to work in this unpaid position in order to pay for his lessons.

Education is never “free”. Who do you think pays teachers’ salaries, upkeep of the school, heating, air-conditioning, desks, chairs, lab equipment? There’s no free lunch.
