The announcer said the Ohio State marching band was formed in 1878 and carried the tradition of the oldest British brass bands, which began in 1809. The "Script Ohio" is the signature move of the band and they perform it every week before the kickoff of the university football games.

@@RaineJT ha, in hoops no team in BIG has more BIG championships or winning record. Purdue also calls itself TBDBITL, with many firsts beyond first band ever to break ranks/create formation, including first college band to play in China, first to sell out Radio City Music Hall, multiple South American and Ireland trips, first to lead the Macys Parade, first graduate to land on the moon, worlds largest bass drum, cradle of twirlers, Presidential inaugurations, 100+ years leading Indy 500, all as the biggest BIG band and only conference school with no music school. 13:01 The "script ohio" is a famous tradition of the marching band. It's considered an honor to dot the "i".
It's their literal signature move and they've been doing it since 1936.

    • @RaineJT

Throughout the season the honor is reserved for graduating seniors. In lieu of that, the drum major will take position to dot the "i", most notably at the OSU- _ichigan game

    • @Cowboy_Steve

Very few non-band members have ever dotted the "i" in Script OHIO. Some of the more notable honorees include comedian Bob Hope, astronaut and US Senator from Ohio John Glenn, and golf legend and Ohio State alumni Jack Nicklaus. All three have ties to the state of Ohio. 🤠

This is The Ohio State University Marching Band!! This is our tradition!! They are singing the OSU Fight Song!! You need to take him on a tour of London!! I've never been there and I recognized them! FYI, yes, Wembly is the biggest capacity stadium in the UK and second biggest in Europe, but when you say how "absolutely massive" it is, just keep in mind that this band's home university stadium is bigger.
    Wembly: 80-90k
    Ohio Stadium : >100k
There are 11 stadiums in the US bigger than Wembly, the UK's largest. So, Americans won't be as impressed by the size of Wembly as a Brit might expect.

The reason they can get into and out of formation so quickly is because they march on their toes at 180 beats per minute and it has been known to reach 200 or higher. Also, the final formation was not part of the London "half-time" presentation. It is "Script Ohio" which is Ohio State University Marching Band's signature. It is performed at every football game the band performs at either home or away. It can be pre-game, post-game and sometimes at half-time like at this show. It was the first script writing formation ever performed and has been going strong since 1932.

I grew up watching the band do all kinds of fantastic routines. They are definitely a huge part of the culture of Columbus Ohio; the same as the college football team. The Alumni Band, as well as former player on the teams throughout the years, are huge draws at charitable events--we honor them quite a lot. Their sort of unofficial nickname is "TBDBITL" which means, "The Best Damned Band In The Land". One other little thing; the band members movements are extremely well coordinated; from their chop-like arm-swings, to their diced-minced steps. Oh, and yes, the Zuzsaphone player dotting the eye is a tradition honoring whoever dot's the "I". In their home stadium, there's usually 110,000 people seeing those guys be stationed there, not including the millions watching on TV. We've had many non-band members honored by dotting the I; world leaders, civic leaders, entertainers, former players and coaches. Dotting the I is a bag deal to this subset of Ohio Culture! I didn't think I'd have this much to say; but they are the best marching band in the world.

      Wrong - for 2 reasons.
1 - London Bridge is NOT in the US. There is a bridge in Arizona which they named 'London Bridge' because it has granite stones from London Bridge in England. But, London Bridge still exists in London.
2 - The bridge the OSU marching band depicts is Tower Bridge....which has 2 towers and is very iconic. London Bridge (in England and the US) are both flat ordinary looking bridges.

@Yass&Fats there is a London Bridge in America at Lake Havasu in Arizona which majority of the stones of that bridge in Arizona is from the actual 1831-1967 River Thames London Bridge when London put it up for sell and was sold for US$2,460,000 back in 1968 that amount would equal $22,189,200.00 in 2024.... Hence why there is a British & American Flags hanging on the London Bridge during the visual performance.

As a veteran of marching bands, it's all about musical ques. At this point of the song, I need to be standing on this part of the field. And Football with all those lines, make it so easy to do. Then you memorize the music and movements and voila! You have a football march band halftime routine. Parades can be harder. That's a marathon. Halftime is easy. It's only 15 minutes.
Making the routines, that's hard. Doing them? Pretty easy. I find it pretty hilarious that people are amazed by this. Grant it IS amazing, but it isn't hard. For marching bands, parades like Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is insane. People drop like flies. In my younger years I did this and it would be cool to do it except:
    a) I'm from Michigan, and is obligated to hate everything Ohio.
    and...
    b) It's a brass band. I played the flute. Sadness.
