    Seriously, putting an animal through chemo is cruel. And they can‘t tell you no. Animals may understand illness, loss and death better than we know. They are not as removed from it as many of us are. Love them well and do right by them. Then let them go when their time has come. That is true kindness.

    Found this video after spending $6k to save my German Shepherd. Small price to pay for what he's given us through his years. He's accompanied my wife and kids while I was away serving in the Army. He's protected my home and family. He deserved the surgery. That being said, he won't get another $6k lol.

    I am so glad that Dave is going into this subject. I've worked in the vet field for 5 years and the worst kind of animal abuse is when people let their creatures die slowly because they can't afford to treat them. Same goes to ALL you college students... Don't even buy a freaking fish unless you can be a caretaker.

    As an RN in the field of oncology... I would never give my dog chemo unless the success rate was extremely high and side effects minimal (which usually is not a thing). Not worth it. The dogs don't understand why they feel like they're being poisoned. For an extra 5 months? Nope.

      I know this is an old comment, but I love that you said this. I completely agree. Keeping the animal alive a few months longer is for us, not for the animal. And, as sad as it is to say goodbye, at that point, it's selfish not to.

    • @melgonz.6962
      @melgonz.6962 7 місяців тому

      Exactly, dogs live in the moment. They don't understand why they are hurting or that you're trying to make them feel better in the future (which usually doesn't happen). They just know they don't feel good, and releasing them of that pain is sometimes the kindest thing to do.

    Equestrian here. I have to be extremely emotionally prepared if a lifesaving treatment is more than what I can afford. In the horse industry, many people will only take out insurance on high-performance horses if they spent 15,000 - 20,000 or more on a horse they plan on taking upper level. It's so easy to completely wreck yourself financially in the horse world, and I'm so glad Dave's keeping me in check. My advice for other riders would be to CASH FLOW EVERYTHING, learn how to haggle if you don't know how, set aside a separate emergency/vet fund, consider all options when buying, and know EXACTLY what you're looking for. TAKE LESSONS FIRST! Most riders don't need a $20,000 horse, myself included for sure. Building both your budget and your skills should be your #1 priority if you're getting into horses.

    Pet insurance has saved me a ridiculous amount of money. For $500 a year I have peace of mind if my dog gets sick (God forbid). If you are middle class citizen on a budget, getting pet insurance is one of the most important things you can purchase. We've stayed on budget so many times (instead of paying a $600 vet bill because my dog swallowed a sock) I can't even tell you. The insurance covers accidents, if another dog attacks your dog, if your dog eats something they shouldn't eat and needs surgery to remove it, etc. It is not just for chemotherapy and cancer treatments.
    It used to be a waste of money but now there are so many wonderful pet insurers, you'd be a fool not to get it.

    • @robynkoenigsberg5939
      @robynkoenigsberg5939 3 роки тому +1

      @@iamkyleclimer I guess it depends on what your pet is like. For me, I have a golden retriever, and he eats everything. He's four and every year we've taken him to the vet at least once because he's eaten something he shouldn't have. Even like weird stuff lol, like we realized he ate toys with stuffing so we took those away and then he decided to eat the stuffing out of a jacket, or a pillow, then we take those away and he decided to down an entire roll of TP while we were asleep 🤣. The ER vet near us costs $300 just to visit, so once they do everything we can easily spend $700-$1000. For us, one visit pays for the cost of the health insurance for him, it locks in our low price since we got it when he was a puppy, and I'd God forbid something serious happens, he's covered! I guess if your dog isn't as sneaky as mine is then maybe saving up would be better? Idk, I can't imagine a dog that isn't sneaking around eating everything lol.

    Love Dave Ramsey, but I'm not sure he really answered the question here. Yes, absolutely you shouldn't have pets if you can't afford them however, does having pet insurance make owning a pet more affordable? Is it a smart financial move or is it a sham? I think those are the questions that should be addressed. Just because you can afford a pet doesn't mean it can be more affordable. I can afford my medical bills, but that doesn't mean my health insurance is a waste of money...

  • @BonnieHalfElven

    You should be able to afford to get them their shots, license, spay/neuter and pay within reason when they get sick or hurt. I would not put a pet through chemo, even if I could afford to. To me, that's selfish and cruel. Make them comfortable for the rest of their life. They give us joy, and we should give comfort to them in the end.
    I buy special food for my cats because of health/digestive issues. It costs a bit more, so maybe I don't buy salmon for myself as often, but that's the price of owning cats.

    The sad thing is that so many people could afford them and then have a life change. Those around such a person need to help if they can to keep the pets in the family and not have to rehome them. A pet should be part of the family, not just "property". They have feelings, although not human. Shelters do put down "owner surrenders" and I hope no one here believes otherwise. Also, euthanasia processes may differ and be painful/cruel inside a shelter scenario. There is something very wrong with the whole pet "system". While breeding flourishes, the common mutt who hasn't been spayed or neutered has no chance of a good life.

    The premiums average MORE than the average pet owner's vet bills.
    So, you're taking care of them if you are getting pet insurance.
    For the same reason life insurance or health insurance or car insurance can be looked at as a good idea, pet insurance is a good idea (if you think insurance is good)

Along with pet insurance brokers so one can choose best options. Then what do you do with all the homeless animals who could have a roof and three square meals and lots of love...and home care best can?

    I remember balling my eyes out when I was 12 and my Mom told me they couldn't afford chemotherapy for our Golden Retriever, but I get it now. Not only is chemo for pet's financially irresponsible for many people, I honestly think it's cruel to the animal, it's a long painful process and your dog has no idea what's going on. It's sad but sometimes you just have to let go. I don't own any animals because I'm barely scraping by on my own, and work too much to give them the attention they need. I love animals just as much as anyone else, but a lot of people honestly think I'm cold-hearted because I don't own a pet yet.

    Love & companionship & comedy is very important to me & my dog.

The guilt that we felt with their agenda even though we knew better... I'm glad you spoke out about this because it is getting bad- we cried over losing our guy because we do adore our animals but you are right, they are animals and this humanizing them just adds heart ache and an empty wallet and does not guarantee quality of life.

I have been fascinated by reptiles for many years. the way I see it, my three tortoises bring me so much joy. even though I know I can't afford them, they eat all my lettuce and greens in our garden. If I get rid of them, unfortunately I'm afraid my wife will sink into a depression. They have been in the family for since the second world war. her father got them after he served in France. So even though they are eating all our food, I know we are still better off. Is there anyway I can diversify our tortoises? perhaps leverage them for some sort of monthly cash flow, without getting rid of them?

    Sorry Dave, pet insurance helps with basic expenses and then helps if something serious happens.
    ALSO, most people can't afford the vet bills for ANY ONE animal in regards to one major bill. I would never not have an animal because I could not afford a major bill. I can afford basic care. If everyone had that mentality, no one would have pets. We have lots of goats and could not possible afford a major event for every one. What mostly happens is an odd vet bill here or there.
    Dave's point of view is from the typical male perspective.

    • @KatieBellino
      @KatieBellino 10 місяців тому

      Is the pet insurance worth it though? Even if I just put $50 a month in a savings account from the time the animal is young, I'm likely to have enough for an emergency event, if that ever comes. That gives me $600/year, so if nothing really happens to the animal in the first 5 years, I already have $3000 saved, which is pretty close to one pet surgery that may or may not ever happen.

    I have pet insurance and it’s been the best money I’ve spent. I had a few thousand set aside for pets before I adopted my two cats (from the same litter) and for the first two years I never touched it but then one started getting sick and then the other (because they’re brothers they have the same conditions) and after a few vet visits and the whole amount I had set aside was gone, I went through insurance and got it all back. So even if you are prepared for animals like I was (because I do agree that you should have money to take care of them) sometimes you can’t predict just how much they’re going to cost. Both my cats are still here 3 years later and healthy, if I had to go back in time I’d still make the decision to make them healthy.

      I have a small non-shedding dog in an apartment, and between my boyfriend and I, there is almost always someone home with him, and we put hours upon hours into his training. Whenever we take him outside, other adult dogs bark at him while he watches them silently. People who hate small dogs always love him because he's so well-behaved.

Really make sure you have $100/month to put towards vet bills otherwise don't get one. Also finding a place to rent becomes much more expensive and difficult with a pet, it's a huge mistake if you're not financially stable. The heartache you will feel if you can't pay a vet bill just isn't worth it. That being said, one benefit is owning a dog motivated me to have a large emergency fund from young age so theres that. I'm a liberal cat owner and I hardly spend anything on my two little lazy bums. They just cost for litter, food, once a year vet visits, and the occasional toy/catnip. If they got a terminal illness or were suffering (ie cancer) I'd euthanize them because they lack the capacity to understand why they are in pain.

    Amen to you on that one Dave. I totally agree people have become stupid. Survey shows that people would rather jump into a lake to save their drowning dog over a drowning person. It's sad really
