I have an aging Labrador who I love dearly and I just know that I would drop thousands to save her. Not 30k, but probably up to 5k. I know me. I know that I couldn't look at those big brown eyes and tell the vet "ok, put her down". So I purchased pet insurance at about $400/yr. Benefits are unlimited after the first $1000 I pay out. So, I know I'm only out of pocket 1k, regardless of circumstances. I'm single, and I think single people are more emotionally attached to their pets. I figure I don't have kids so I don't mind paying out for an animal.

Do you believe in transplantation? I don't but think about it. Would you let a family member suffer when a Live donation was available? All life is precious to Our Creator. Look at Grand Bahama Island. What good is a house compared to a life?

@Sara Allison: It's not about money, it's about quality of life for both these cats. If you have ever spoken to someone who has had this serious operation you will find that every day is a challenge and the slightest bacteria can end your life in an instant. Plus, these medicines they will have to take for the rest of their lives can make you feel nauseous and feeling lousy all the time. Do you really want to put two innocent cats through this unpleasant regime just to avoid grief for yourself? That's just too selfish, in my opinion.

I love my cats, but $30,000 is too much to handle... I'd be willing to spend my emergency fund of $1,000 to save them, but any amount beyond that is out of my capability, especially I have debt to pay off. If my cats ever become that sick, I'd make sure they spend the last moments of their lives being safe and happy, and I'll give myself some time to grieve when their time comes to an end.

I wouldn't spent $30k on a cat or even a dog-- I could do better things with that money than putting a cat through a painful 8-hour kidney transplant surgery.

I would have returned to work if I didnt have the money. We never got another pet, we were too heartbroken when he eventually died. I saved my money to spend it like we wanted. At the time we had about 2 million in investments and a fully paid for million dollar plus house. A mere drop in the bucket compared to Daves net worth. But in my world , we earned it , and we spent it . Thats what step 7 is all about.

I love animals. I do believe though that crazy money spent on surgery makes sense if you’re a super millionaire and it’s like a regular person “buying a biscuit” as you would say. It doesn’t make sense for someone to put themselves into debt. So at least those people had money in savings to pay for their cat. But now to not be able to afford a down payment on a house. That’s sad but shows what is a priority to them. To each their own.
My ex was telling the judge that he couldn’t pay child support because he had adopted a cat with AIDs. And that cat needed over a $1000 a month in meds. The judge told him to put his cat down and save himself some money by paying $546 a month on his son. I was so grateful for the logic of that judge. Lol

I didn't hear hypocrisy. If you bought 10 million in bricks and wood (meaning his house) you can get that back by simply selling the home. They picked a cat's life over a home for their family. When that cat dies they won't get a return on the money they wasted. But I do think people can do what they want with their money. They can set it on fire if they like, but that is more of the equivalent than buying a home.

This second kittie will now NEVERmore experience its life as it was again. I am sorry, but this decision on their part was actually very mean to the second kitty, and wilful and immature because we all must accept death. The vet facility that did this should stop offering this surgery because it is unethical!!! It takes away the rights of the second kittie. Is it possible I am the only one thinking this way???

I've got 3 cats that are about my only family. I love them dearly, but for $30K I can buy a lot of replacement cats. A dozen years ago, I had a cat rescued as a feral kitten. He was my best buddy. At 5 years old, he went into kidney failure, as a disproportionate number of male cats do. The deal was that I could send him to a clinic for $25K for a transplant. Part of the deal is that you get the donor cat as part of the procedure. Hobbes got medication, hydration and subQ IVs at home. He lasted the rest of the summer before I had to finally put him down.
