    Unbelievable enough, my sister's "guidance counselor" advised her that she can take out loans to supplement for room & board to go away for the "college experience", bc it's normal to have college debt and it can't be avoided! Thankfully my sister has some sense and decided to stay local and not go into debt.

      This, right here. My son went to Vocational Technical School (also known as a career center) for Carpentry and Building Construction (think General Contractor) through high school (we homeschooled the academics). Once he finishes his apprenticeship and has a couple of years under his belt, he'll make somewhere around $30 an hour and eventually be able to own his own business (and never run out of work). All without a single penny spent on education (besides homeschool materials).

      Neckia Daniels She can get an associates degree in the sciences or for certified surgical tech and radiology tech and the jobs will pay at least around $16-$20 to start(I'm a CST). If she's not into the college thing, may I suggest working for the Union? No college needed unless you're an instructor, and then only an associates is necessary(which they pay for), tons of different jobs to choose from(my husband's a carpenter's apprentice, soon to be journeyman), paid apprenticeship with steady, continuous pay increases to journeyman status(Kansas has the best rate of pay for cost of living, but most work is done in Missouri, i.e. plenty of driving), many fields that accommodate women well, plus she can retire early in 20 to 30 years and have a $4000-$6000(depending on job choice and time in) a month pension and travel/volunteer or begin school/another career at 38 or 48 financially set! Last suggestion is joining the military(I'm a Navy veteran), go to school while she serves, travel and experience the world, and once she exits, the GI Bill, VA home loan and a slew of services will be at her disposal. Sorry for such a long comment, but hopefully your daughter will find something that fits her, provides for her well and keeps the both of you free from debt. Good luck!

My student debt is asinine, and I kick myself in the butt for picking such a dumb degree. Wish somebody would have opened my eyes to this reality, but I think it's silly to say that the loans aren't problematic. Though now, I only blame myself for my decisions.

Or are young adults too emotional to be able to look at themselves logically? Especially with the pressures of social media in 2018.

    What about if the parents and most adults encountered were the main agitators directing their kids and future generation in direction of said financial heedlessness, and educational demise? In that case, the suggestion may be ill advised for stepping in, no?
    I'm sure for many, not all, first time college students, they may actually be the first in the entire family unit to head to college and want to make their parents proud and some parents with no fault of their own are just completely oblivious to how the ball game has truly changed after NAFTA. These were the same working parents that busted their behinds to make a brighter future for their kids only to watch their own jobs go off overseas or suddenly get flooded by foreign and domestic competition without adequate preparation and now their kids, all grown up, riding out the tumultuous economic trough of the last decade through incurring more 'Education' aka more "credentialization" (more debt) and only now facing a world vastly different from their parents. Once upon a time, going to college was part of the 'success' formula. Now it has become the noose that will hang many. It's now just slick marketing ploy and standard advertisement regurgitated during every open house event.
    They followed the rules. They followed the formula. And now paying the price.

    I learned very quickly that college advisers are not looking out for the students, but for the college's profit. They shove students into classes that don't matter just to get student counts up for classes that lack the numbers. Do your own research on what classes you need to take and tell your adviser to unlock your registration so you can sign up for those classes. I let my adviser pick my classes for me my first semester because I thought they were supposed to help me, but I was screwed. It took me 4.5 years to graduate because I was advised incorrectly.

    Universities should not be the gatekeepers as they have been in the past. We need an affordable way to get recognized for what we learn on our own, so that what we may honestly need professional teaching to obtain can be achieved efficiently and at a reasonable cost.

    Hey Dave. It's now 2019 and this rant to men to get into a trade school is getting old. IF you want to be a....here we go: plumber, carpenter etc. (everybody says the same thing)….Now will you address the men who want to be a....oh lets see....a dentist, a pastor, a high school guidance counselor, CEO of a company, a tech writer? Then address the facts for WOMEN. How long do you think a woman plumber would get jobs when people hire men first????

    I have a degree in philosophy and I make more than $300k/year. Some jobs simply require a four-year degree, with your major essentially being irrelevant. That being said, a degree in computer science is overall - and without doubt - a safer bet.

  • @Skweepa
    @Skweepa 7 років тому

    Dave, will you help design and seed the biggest apprenticeship database in the US? Mostly for STEM? Imagine if the demand for STEM workers was filled with hard workers willing to work for minimum wage for a few years in exchange for intense STEM coursework - mostly on the job? (Instead of these middle/lower class intellectuals forking over 40k+ in education up front and hoping what they learned still applies to current needs in STEM.) Saving up for 5 years for school and draining ones cognitive energy battling for a middle skill job that doesn't necessarily lead to STEM to then eventually pay for a STEM degree (and be underemployed during the next 4 years of education) is a huge waste of human capital. Card table business works 10% of the time too. You're the guy to root for and find designers/innovators for apprenticeship programming - you hate debt and you believe in giving back. You know people... and STEM companies need your assistance participating in a change in paradigm about who pays for education (when STEM is rich and needs more human capital...why not have them fund their employee's training).

    • @Skweepa
      @Skweepa 7 років тому

      I suppose it would also include apprenticeship curriculum (teaching people in STEM how to teach their apprentices, and make sure they don't lose profit overall. They can instead have a self-sustaining charitable "scholarship" program that turns out highly skilled STEM workers who may end up making them lots of $$$).

    I am sure many companies, if not most, prefer people with education from high end schools than people from cheaper state or city schools. You are fucking lying if you are saying your company doesn't have a preferance. People with business degrees from NYU Stern go extreme high ends companies while the same degree from lesser schools end up nowhere.
    This is another clear example of wrong advice without understanding the full scope of job market.

      Victoria Films I've heard him say before its fine if people want degrees that are not easily hire able BUT you shouldn't go in debt to get them. The dumb part isn't the degree it's the crazy high debt for the degree that will be near impossible to pay back

    • @dasmesser1
      @dasmesser1 7 років тому +2

      Education is an investment. You pay money upfront for more money down the road. Naturally, there are bad investments, like going to school for 4+ years, getting into $80,000 of debt for a job that pays $35,000 / year. It is not like we don't like artists, authors, social workers, non-profit organizations, etc. but currently there is a vast oversupply of people with those careers and thus the value of them is low. So, if you go into these majors the monetary risk of not getting a good ROI.
      Sorry to be a little hard on you, but as long as education is an investment (which it always is) you'll always need to keep an eye on the ROI of it.

      So go to a trade school. electrician, plumber, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, carpenter, the list goes on and on of valuable skills that are useful to society. Smart people can build a house. You don't have to have a degree to be smart. Learn a trade and actually contribute to something. So many degrees are pointless or they are giving out more degrees than there is a need for in the work force. When you got almost 80 teachers applying for only 4 positions that is a problem. Many will get a degree and never use it like they hoped making the kind of money they had imagined.
