It's a good feeling isn't it. Let me ask you something. When I left the debt life in September 2016, I felt I had done something wrong, and didn't believe it, and maybe felt like I sinned in some way, and it was too good to be true. Did you have feelings like that?

I've lived below my means all of my life. Never carried a balance. When I bought my house, I had NO credit, got a 30 year mortgage with a big down payment and paid it off in 11 1/2 years. I've followed Dave's way of thinking before I ever heard of him. Thing's get old - Freedom from debt NEVER get's old!

Actually banks loaning broke people money is where the banks make the majority of their profits . Broke people have a taste for credit and they are most likely to just pay the minimum each month. Even with a large amount of defaults the banks are still making a fortune off of loaning to broke people

What it boils down to is this. As big of a nightmare as 2008 and 2009 were for this nation and the economy the world over, the fact of the matter is, people forget. 2008-2009 may as well have been before any of our lifetimes. I was in the toilet financially in 2008 and 2009. I sure haven't forgotten and I have NO desire to go back and relive it.

I haven't had a credit card in over a decade now. I actually got a credit card at 17, by lying on the application about the year I was born. I figured out early on, that credit cards got me in trouble, but just recently figured out that it's not just credit cards, but ALL DEBT, that gets you in trouble. I have a long ways to go to be debt free, but one day and one bite at a time, and I am going to make it!

    • @ladyt618
      @ladyt618 6 років тому +3

Wanna hear something scarier.....I DIDN'T lie on my credit card application in college (entered college at 16) and when asked on the phone call to confirm my date of birth, gave them the correct DOB, there was a brief pause (I'm assuming while the representative did the math) and I STILL got the card in the mail. Some scary stuff!!

    • @TheBlackDahlia13131

Just shows how little these companies care. I'm not a fan of Elizabeth Warren, but something she said in a documentary called 'Maxed Out,' really rings true. She said she was commissioned to give a speech for a bunch of bankers, and she was telling them how if they screened out those who had the least ability to pay, they'd save money. To which she said a guy who was "The one with all the power," responded that if they cut those people out, that's where they make all their money. Dave echos that sentiment, as Sub-Prime lending is surging again, and if they actually didn't lend to those who had the least ability to repay, they'd lose their biggest cash cow, cause when those folks default, they get to tack on egregious hyper-inflated amounts in fees and interest.

@Avealina you are right it is all debt, car note, student loans, medical bills, and even a mortgage/rent. Don't get me wrong you need a place to live and car. However, people tend to live beyond their means by buying a car or get in a house/apartment that they really can't afford. All to impress others.

Imagine how affordable everything in the world would be if nobody is using plastic. If everyone lived within their means, didn't spend more than they made and bought everything on credit artificially driving up demand, the cost of goods and services would still be as low as they were in the 1960's and 1970's.

My son and I just traveled cross country without using credit cards. I'm debt free because I followed Dave's plan. I've since fully completed Baby Step 3, saved and paid cash for a new architectural roof, soffit, siding, gutters and shutters as well as a water heater and two new toilets. To those who say you can't safely travel without credit cards... Oh yes you can! I got two prepaid Visa cards and I kept one and my son kept the other. We also had cash for our trip. To those who proudly tout that you use credit cards responsibility... congratulations. As for me, I don't want to ever owe anyone money ever again, even if it's just for a day. I learned my lesson, Dave.

Liliana Lagos I honestly believe it will in the next 3 years. I mean I'm just an average guy so I don't have any special insight but it seems as though people are back to doing the same stupid stuff they were then. A strong cash position in the next few years could be really advantageous.

John Gray It does seem that way. We live in ky and everyone we know is buying a house. We live in a small to bedroom apt with 2 kids. I used to think I was behind in life but since I started listening to Dave Ramsey I can see most of these people are probably barely making their payments. I dont plan on buying a home anytime soon unless the prices drop.

The problem is both. Like 90% of the time when I go to a clothes or electronics store I'm offered a credit card. Luckily I know enough about credit cards to say no. But not everyone does and they think credit cards are a toy and take them.

It’s Dec. 22, 2019. I have an appointment with Apple in 2 hours to reset my password. While waiting, I’m listening to Dave yelling at me on how stupid I am/was for using my credit cards in the past. I’m sure he’ll be proud that I have no desire to buy anything for myself and/or anyone anything for Christmas this year. If God allows me to live to see 2023, want to be debt free by then. Thanks Dave! 🥰

It helps to watch videos on frugal living, cutting costs, finding bargains, etc. to learn techniques to outsmart industry in their overpriced, over-hyped marketing. It's a contest of wits. Also be aware of when you are making impulse buys, and learn how to push the "pause" button when you find yourself in that dilemma. Sleep on it at least overnight, and decide if there is a better way to get what you want, and ask yourself if you really need it.

Just to be a little fair I think another major issue here with credit card usage. Is the fact we never really recovered from the last recession. People nowadays have less disposable income due to everything rising. Example look at the cost of health insurance now for a lot of people. Therefore they are using credit cards to make ends meet. I have $7500 left in debt period and then I'm done!

I started listening to Dave back in '94 or '95 or so when he first came on in the Knoxville (Oak Ridge) area. At that time it was all about credit cards and how the dog and babies get offers in the mail almost daily. Then there were the "On Air Plastictomies" where credit cards were destroyed inventively. The cards were sent in to be displayed on the "Wall of Shame". Maybe Dave ought to do a little basic credit card preaching more often. I thought we were past that, guess not.
BTW, I clipped my cards and stopped borrowing money in 1996.
