I got my cat from the shelter, and the shelter gave me one complimentary checkup at my local vet. The checkup went well. I stupidly and casually mentioned I noticed she had loose stools probably because she was a stray and ate spoil food on the streets, who knows, so the vet sent me home with some meds, and the problem went away. I then purchased Lemonade insurance, who then obtained the record from that vet. 4 months later, my cat had one incident of diarrhea an vomiting so I took her in for a blood and urine test - $350 total. My claim was rejected by Lemonade citing - PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. Either they are playing stupid or just don't know diarrhea is a symptom of many things NOT a disease like cancer or CKD. If my cat got into my trash and ate more rotten meat, can it cause diarrhea? If I switch food too fast, can it also cause diarrhea? They sure can! Lemonade doesn't care, it's happened in 4 months ago, it must be related. All diarrhea(s) are caused by the same underlying condition. The consolation prize Lemonade gave me was - "BTW, good news is if your cat doesn't show any symptoms of diarrhea after a year, it's considered CURED!!!!!" WOW, thank you Lemonade! It only takes a year to cure diarrhea? That's it? How does this insurance company make any money insuring a cat that has DIARRHEA???!!!!!! I reported them to BBB and I am in the process of cancelling the policy. Moral of the story? KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT DURING INITIAL VET VISITS. THEY WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU SAY, WHICH THE INSURANCE CAN USE TO WIGGLE THEIR WAY OUT OF REIMBURSTMENT. And I would not use Lemonade ever again.
Embrace was the same way. " Pre-existing" is their favorite word. Then Double your money to pay and if you don't cancel it 10 days Before it renews, you owe the entire next year. Just pay your vet the money every month instead,have a emergency amount already at the vets office. Insurance maybe good but only for broken bones that isn't a pre existing condition
I got Trupanion the same day I adopted a 4 year old chihuahua mix. I also got the behavioral rider. She developed IBD and severe anxiety within months. She had to have an EGD with biopsies. She has a heart murmur too. I pay more for her insurance than I do my own but it has been a real life saver. Be aware, Trupanion doesn’t pay for exams or routine care like dentals. If someone is considering Trupanion, be aware that there is no yearly deductible to meet. So I would recommend a higher deductible because after that initial cost it pays 90% forever.

For example, Greta has IBD so I paid a deductible 2 years ago and now I no longer need to meet a deductible for anything related to that. She gets annual labs and chest X-ray also that are covered under that. On Greta's policy the deductible is $50 per disease but I think they have options for up to $500 deductible which I kind of wish I had gone for because my monthly premium would be lower. But I didn't. They have paid out thousands for her including for an endoscopy with biopsies. They continue to cover her probiotics which are not prescription but are recommended by her vet. They do not cover the cost of any exams, though, so keep that in mind. And nothing pre-existing.

My dog has had over $60k paid out by Trupanion in 9 years, all for chronic conditions. Thanks to pet insurance he has a neurologist (idiopathic epilepsy), dermatologist (atopy, food allergies, and erythema multiforme), and a cardiologist (eccentric cardiomegaly and MMVD). Add in bicipital tenosynovitis and his physiotherapist and he’s the only dog I know with 4 specialists. None of his care would be possible without insurance.
New time cat owner of a 13 year old from a close friend who had recently moved and couldn’t keep him. Aside from hyperthyroidism the cat was extremely healthy and spry, all the vets this year initially thought he was much younger. Fast forward to a week ago when we took him for a regular wellness panel and turns out he sadly has heart disease. The tests needed to properly diagnose and care for him over the past week has spanned close to $3k. And stupid me hadn’t bothered fully researching pet insurance beforehand because all my older family members who I had talked about it with essentially said most plans wouldn’t cover a pet that old so I never looked into it. Expensive learning experience indeed because having some insurance would’ve saved me a ton esp in the long run despite higher monthly premiums…I take full accountability, always do your research no matter what anyone else says, even family !
I just got my golden retriever 3.5yrs insurance, she’s a home, office and hunting dog. We’ve had at least 2k in accidents that just come with an active dog, I’ll check back in a couple years and let y’all know if it’s worth it, but for $40/month, and knowing without insurance I’d pay whatever it took till bad days outweigh the good, I think it’s a good prepayment plan. I’d spend $40 on worse things each month anyways lol

MRI, cardiac workups, kidney issues, sooo many labs… has quarterly checkup with Ohio State Neuro this coming week. I had heard that pet insurance had annual contracts and that what wasn’t pre-existing became pre-existing the following year. Glad to see you posting again. I put pet insurance on my dog when he was a puppy until he passed at 12. He developed IVDD and because of the insurance he was able to have several years with good treatment and rehab.
Our last two had conditions (cancer and heart disease) so we couldn’t get insurance for them, but the two we just got we have planned to get insurance. Just have to decide who to go with. This was really helpful. We ended up getting a CareCredit card to help with those two (ultra sounds and X-rays and sonograms, etc.). That has been helpful with interest free for a period so you don’t have to worry about that.
I have one of your favorite breeds, ol' smush face, but I have insurance on her and the GSD. Got Wellness too simply for budgeting ease. Pets Best and FurSure. Will be switching to FurSure when available in Florida as they have a plan like Trupanion. P.S. always love the brother jabs....😂

Someone said AKC covers pre-existing conditions after a year long waiting period in most states, but idk. 🤷♀️ Different person said they have Pet Assure with no age or pre-existing condition denial or waiting period or deductible. I have Fetch and only pay $35 a month for my cat. I have a $250 deductible, 10% copay after the deductible, and an unlimited maximum payout. I unfortunately don’t believe they offer the unlimited plans anymore though. I’ve had this policy on my cat for over 5 years. But it should be cheaper than Trupanion for some coverage. I’ve never had an issue getting a claim covered.

@DVMCellini Having money set aside is always a good idea, but I was very glad our dog had pet health insurance (Trupanion) because she had complicated conditions requiring neurologist & internal med specialist--one short period of a few days with MRI & other diagnostics & surgery by a boarded surgical specialist was over $12,000, & that was just one bill for one dog, not all the additional bills we would have had to pay for the rest of her life had we not had Trupanion (she lived to 15 yrs with several major chronic conditions). And we do have other dogs & we're so glad they have insurance too, because even though having $10k per pet set aside may sound like enough, I'm here to say it may not be enough for even one critical event for one dog & then what do you do? So, our dogs will always have insurance!
I've wondered if it is worth it. I don't think it is with how old my pets are now, but I might consider it if I get a puppy or kitten. I think the HYS is really good advice though for anyone who maybe is "too late" to get insurance. I've generally been lucky with my pets and they have been healthy. My Greyhound is a little accident prone but it hasn't cost too much, just laceration care and wound treatment. But if he broke something I'd be in trouble. It's certainly something you need to think about. As much as I love my pets, I'm maxing out at 5k and beyond that I'll have to consider euthanasia. It's a balance. Having pets ultimately is a luxury but at the same time, they can be an essential piece to someone's mental health and well-being and being poor is a shitty excuse to say someone shouldn't have good things in their life. Maybe pet insurance can change that for some people, but also feel cautious about the idea of insurance since so often it is a systemically enforced scam that can contribute to artificially raised prices.

this is the problem though, pet insurance is made to cover "surprise vet bills" however you get an $8000 dollar bill and cant pay that bill? But you must pay it and get reimbursed in maybe 2-3 weeks. Most Americans still can't do that. It sounds like a complete scam. Unless they have an extremely low deductible and higher award year. But then monthly premiums are insane.
I worked at a vet and that is why I choose trupanion because I knew they paid upfront. I pay $80 a month for my cat but I do it happily because twice he's been in for emergencies and I've not been able to shell out $3k on the fly. The problem is people WANT their money back.will happily pay $100 for car insurance without a blink without wanting to get in an accident to use it. But somehow, get this weird indignation about paying for pet insurance they don't "use"

Trupanion is a joke. They treat each unique issue as its own deductible meaning you can have 10 visits in the year let’s say for 10 different issues and each one you must pay the deductible on. They end up paying almost nothing. I’ve had for a year or two and finally dumping them.
The only pet insurances I can get where I live, I've decided not to get because they don't cover ears, teeth and ER tummy issues for rabbits, and that's what I own. For rabbits those are statistically so big that even though one of mine has some weirdo unknown condition that causes her neuropathic muscle loss and the blood tests have been quite expensive, it's still not as much money as if I had bought insurance over the years. That being said, if I had indoor/outdoor cats or doggos, I'd get insurance for sure.

Nationwide just sent me a letter notifying that they will not be renewing my policies for both my chinchilla and my cat, even though I've been with them for over 5 years, and barely any claims made. They told me I have to sign back up, and any illness/condition that occurred WHILE I was covered under the old plan, would now be considered pre-existing! This seems illegal - they are making me sign up as a brand new customer!!! 😡 Stay far away from Nationwide!

I use HealthyPaws currently for emergency and illness only, no dental or preventive, but it's much cheaper. one of my cats just got diagnosed with a chronic disease, and they paid out pretty quickly. hopefully my premium doesn't go up next year though.
The other thing insurance doesn't cover is dental care. I've looked into insurance for my indoor-only cats and I just can't make it make sense. Dogs or any animals that go outside, it makes a lot more sense. I agree with self-insuring if you can put away the "premium" into a high yield savings account every month (auto-withdrawal from your paycheck if you can). I'm not ever going to spend $10000 on my cat though. She's going to kitty heaven if her one-time treatment would cost that much. I'm sure I've spent $5k on her teeth, but that's over 11 years.
DO NOT get TRupanion, I’m cancelling mine because now starting September this year, have my Boston 2 years in Vancouver here. They are uping my monthly payment now almost 50 dollars a month. First was I think 13 dollars a month second year, now starting third year 23 dollars, just said in my area was an increase of some incidences. Promised not to raise premiums IF my pet had problems. My pet doesn’t have problems but other Bostons have problems in the area, it’s a scam!
I was looking at signing up and they quoted me 138.00 per month with a 500.00 deductible. I have Embrace and I haven't had many issues with them at half the cost.
Unlimited coverages are important for special dogs like Champion breeds or show dogs. Young dogs require 5k coverages, rarely humans have medical bills over 5k, do not over insure. This is a sales gimmick.
My cat has a pre existing condition so i won't be purchasing the pet insurance. I take care of my cat at home with fluid treatments for kidney illness. Her Vet is very reasonable with his fees.

my issue is which coverage and deductible to get. my cat is healthy right now, so im not too worried, but still.
Spot Pet Insurance took less than 2 weeks for reimbursement for my cat.

And we do have other dogs & we're so glad they have insurance too, because even though having $10k per pet set aside may sound like enough, I'm here to say it may not be enough for even one critical event for one dog & then what do you do? So, our dogs will always have insurance!

I've wondered if it is worth it. I don't think it is with how old my pets are now, but I might consider it if I get a puppy or kitten. I think the HYS is really good advice though for anyone who maybe is "too late" to get insurance. I've generally been lucky with my pets and they have been healthy. My Greyhound is a little accident prone but it hasn't cost too much, just laceration care and wound treatment. But if he broke something I'd be in trouble. It's certainly something you need to think about. As much as I love my pets, I'm maxing out at 5k and beyond that I'll have to consider euthanasia. It's a balance. Having pets ultimately is a luxury but at the same time, they can be an essential piece to someone's mental health and well-being and being poor is a shitty excuse to say someone shouldn't have good things in their life. Maybe pet insurance can change that for some people, but also feel cautious about the idea of insurance since so often it is a systemically enforced scam that can contribute to artificially raised prices.

this is the problem though, pet insurance is made to cover "surprise vet bills" however you get an $8000 dollar bill and cant pay that bill? But you must pay it and get reimbursed in maybe 2-3 weeks. Most Americans still can't do that. It sounds like a complete scam. Unless they have an extremely low deductible and higher award year. But then monthly premiums are insane.
I worked at a vet and that is why I choose trupanion because I knew they paid upfront. I pay $80 a month for my cat but I do it happily because twice he's been in for emergencies and I've not been able to shell out $3k on the fly. The problem is people WANT their money back.will happily pay $100 for car insurance without a blink without wanting to get in an accident to use it. But somehow, get this weird indignation about paying for pet insurance they don't "use"

Trupanion is a joke. They treat each unique issue as its own deductible meaning you can have 10 visits in the year let’s say for 10 different issues and each one you must pay the deductible on. They end up paying almost nothing. I’ve had for a year or two and finally dumping them.
The only pet insurances I can get where I live, I've decided not to get because they don't cover ears, teeth and ER tummy issues for rabbits, and that's what I own.
For rabbits those are statistically so big that even though one of mine has some weirdo unknown condition that causes her neuropathic muscle loss and the blood tests have been quite expensive, it's still not as much money as if I had bought insurance over the years.
That being said, if I had indoor/outdoor cats or doggos, I'd get insurance for sure.

Nationwide just sent me a letter notifying that they will not be renewing my policies for both my chinchilla and my cat, even though I've been with them for over 5 years, and barely any claims made. They told me I have to sign back up, and any illness/condition that occurred WHILE I was covered under the old plan, would now be considered pre-existing! This seems illegal - they are making me sign up as a brand new customer!!! 😡 Stay far away from Nationwide!

I asked Nationwide if they could grandfather these 2 pets' policies (I have another cat covered by them but she has their "newer", a.k.a. less coverage/more expensive policy). They refused. Nationwide has really screwed me over, and according to the Pet's Best representative, alot of other people too. I will deter anyone from ever signing with them for any type of insurance. To have existing customers have to resign as new customers, AND make everything a pre-existing condition that wasn't when you initially insured with them, should be absolutely illegal! I use HealthyPaws currently for emergency and illness only, no dental or preventive, but it's much cheaper. one of my cats just got diagnosed with a chronic disease, and they paid out pretty quickly. hopefully my premium doesn't go up next year though.

Because it costs the hospital about $6000-7000 and there needs to be a profit margin to stay afloat.
The other thing insurance doesn't cover is dental care. I've looked into insurance for my indoor-only cats and I just can't make it make sense. Dogs or any animals that go outside, it makes a lot more sense. I agree with self-insuring if you can put away the "premium" into a high yield savings account every month (auto-withdrawal from your paycheck if you can). I'm not ever going to spend $10000 on my cat though. She's going to kitty heaven if her one-time treatment would cost that much. I'm sure I've spent $5k on her teeth, but that's over 11 years.
DO NOT get TRupanion, I’m cancelling mine because now starting September this year, have my Boston 2 years in Vancouver here. They are uping my monthly payment now almost 50 dollars a month. First was I think 13 dollars a month second year, now starting third year 23 dollars, just said in my area was an increase of some incidences. Promised not to raise premiums IF my pet had problems. My pet doesn’t have problems but other Bostons have problems in the area, it’s a scam!
I was looking at signing up and they quoted me 138.00 per month with a 500.00 deductible. I have Embrace and I haven't had many issues with them at half the cost.
Unlimited coverages are important for special dogs like Champion breeds or show dogs. Young dogs require 5k coverages, rarely humans have medical bills over 5k, do not over insure. This is a sales gimmick.

My cat has a pre existing condition so i won't be purchasing the pet insurance. I take care of my cat at home with fluid treatments for kidney illness. Her Vet is very reasonable with his fees.
