One shot made it so worthwhile | Railway Photography | Summit Tunnel & Gauxholme Viaduct

  • Can you guess which? One of my favourite railway images of the year came from this railway photography trip along the Calder Valley Main line.
    Starting at Summit Tunnel, when built, it was the world’s longest railway tunnel then working the short distance to Walsden ending at the fantastic Gauxholme Viaduct near Todmorden, built by George Stephenson to make the Manchester and Leeds Railway the first trans-Pennine railway line. What spectacular Pennine scenery to photograph trains on a fine autumn afternoon.
    Mostly passenger trains but a loaded class 60 freight did make an appearance on a heavy Liverpool to Drax Power Station Biomass freight train.
    The one shot made the afternoon so worthwhile.
    You can view all the images from this UA-cam Railway photography adventure on my website andrewshenton....

    Too dark!? That last picture at the viaduct was immense in depth of colour and atmosphere. Good stuff again Andrew pity they’re not longer.

      Thanks Mark, yes I did think it would be too dark, it did polish up in Lightroom way better than I imagined, I did take a couple of other shots at different exposures to blend together if required - in the end I didn't need to. Video length is always a dilemma.

    Super little video Andrew. Thats a very nice area around that way and you got some nice shots. Think the shot at 6.30 had some great colour in the sky and detail in the viaduct

      Thanks, Keith, that's appreciated, yes I agree it was lucky that golden colour in the sky, even though the scene was in shadow, that colour just lifted the shot.

    Thought-provoking as ever Andrew. That path on the hillside, looking down to the valley and viaduct below, looked rather precarious to me.

      Cheers, Peter, not quite as bad as it looks, although I wouldn’t fancy one of the houses that cling to the hillside.

    I've been to Walsden Station a few years ago (month before the Pandemic started back in February) and it is a nice station, what I also noticed is that where the old footbridge is at 1:50 used to be where the first Walsden Station used to be. Great Video, some great locations

    Your wrong Andrew, your film was not dreadful at all, but very enjoyable. Do you get more enjoyment out of creating these film for us or getting the shots for flickr ?

    • @AndrewShenton
      @AndrewShenton  2 роки тому

      Thanks, Peter, I can feel when I’ve shot a good video and achieved some potential images, I didn’t get that feeling on this video, so whatever came was built in the edit, both video and photos. Now, the question, do I enjoy video or photography? I actually enjoy both, but if I’m doing a video It does take a lot of concentration and the photography certainly isn’t as relaxed, there's always the pressure of getting an image to make the video. I can be much more relaxed and do enjoy the photography more when I just go out to take a photo, there's no pressure to get that shot, if it doesn’t happen who cares there's always next time. Regards Andrew
